I'm also someone who has a very good friend who was the victim of some of the most terrible crimes that you can imagine... at the hands of family members. ☹️
I'm not actually a fan of the police though. Unfortunately, they haven't done much to help my friend. But generally speaking yes - I do support the idea of police being able to use DNA databases to catch rapists and murderers.
Will never do a DNA test. Don't plan on murdering anyone but if I do, don't won't to make the job easy for the police.
@@UsefulCharts as a German I can confidentially say that our police will never be allowed to use that information. DNA is part of your private data and that is something taken very seriously over here. The police isn't even allowed to use the toll data, they have to set up their own devices on the highways and inform the public about it, whenever they want to track down somebody in a car.
Bruh, having to tell the public when they are doing it. That’s like a criminal telling the police exactly when they are gonna commit a crime and where they will do it.

Always encourage people to be sure to read any site's user agreement. There are some companies in some places that may make your data available to others, such as a government, without your permission.
Also, I am a fierce critic of what I call _identity shopping_ , and the idea of "ethnicity" as so many companies call their algorithm output. Identity shopping is the desire of people to feel they need to be identified as _such and such_ for some other purpose than actual family history.
Third party sites for DNA upload can help one with research on one's family history. But finding matches is often not what people desire, as they seek identities.
I am actually a person who is identity shops. As I have had low self-esteem and purpose, finding my ancestry (maybe I am a different ethnicity) is at least something I can grab and hold on to. Want to find my passion and be a master of something, and searching my career(myself) everywhere, trying new things, but little to no results so far.

What's wrong with finding out which ethnic groups you descend from?
Hi. I'm a genealogy nerd, but the only thing keeping me from using these services is the privacy. There have been cases where the US government has demanded DNA data (and other stuff, like private conversations) to be used in crime related purposes. For instance, we have the recent case where a private conversation between a mother and a daughter was spied and used as a proof that she had an abortion (which had recently made illegal).
And I'm not even American. Is there a way to use that information in a totally anonymous way, and making sure that the company does not store a copy of the data you uploaded?
DNA is the most private thing we have, and I think we have to be very very careful with whom has access to it.
Exactly. Any of my professors specialised in genetics have warned me for these services.
The sad truth about all these services is you can be as safe and private as you want but any relative can out you by uploading their info.

@@asdf-un9gs Although this may be true (could check the privacy policy and user agreements if those even matter), it wouldn't take long for your government to get your DNA, if they really wanted, as I'm sure you know how easy it is.

I'd love to know more about my ancestry and potential living relatives, but I don't trust any company with my DNA and I'd advise everyone to be more careful with what information you are willing to share with whom.
Here's a tip for mytrueancestry: buy each tier separately. Don't buy the highest tier right off the bat. I've been doing this each month and I have 2 tiers left until I have all tiers unlocked. I've used it as a tool to show my 5 year old son where our ancestors came from. The plots on the map are interactive. I share DNA on my dad's side with the Romanovs, amongst many other royal lines.
Keep in mind, it's not an app, it's a website. Add the site to your homescreen if you plan to view it frequently. They update their database as more and more dig sites get genotyped
I started at the 1st tier and moved up as they had sales.

Great stuff.... I've only tried myTrueAncestry and GEDmatch from these.... GEDmatch was a little more confusing and i quite liked myTrueAncestry features, which was much more straight forward to understand. it gave some extra clues and a few surprises. Will be interested to see your comparison.

@@lorettahines7936 What do you mean by MTA? It does DNA matching with ancient populations, not really with living people you can contact, if that's what you mean.
Really great way to find out if you have that dang MTHFR gene! A lot of people have it and have no idea.

That ancient DNA thing on My True Heritage seems really interesting. That'd totally be the first one I'd try.
GED would be second with both the central database and police match being equally appealing, but cumulatively not more than My True.
Same! I think it'd be pretty darn cool to see who my ancient ancestors were, or at least have an idea of what they did in their lives, and once I get my DNA tested (which is still some time away), I already have plans to upload that info to My True Heritage to see what they'll find for me.
What’s your deep dive? On Mytrueancestry, civilization breakdown are just groups that share your overall makeup, meaning it’s useful for deciphering the populations your ancestors fell into.
Whereas deep dive gives you your exact ancestor, which is more conclusive. As well as deep dive is a measure of which ancestor effects your snps, in which, snps effect things such as your phenotypes (what you look like) and your health. Which can show different results than your civilization breakdown.
Mine, for example, my civilization breakdown is very British Isles Celtic,but my direct effect and snps are very heavily Scandinavian.
Which with the York Gladiator sample, we know that Scandinavian dna found it’s way into the isles a couple of hundred years, before the Anglo-Saxon migration and around five hundred years before the Viking Age

After watching your video I signed up with Genomelink & I decided to pay for the European ancestry report. It's brought up a whole bunch of different countries & ethnic groups that I don't get on Ancestry. It's very interesting.
My mom was having some unknown blood issues. She had done her DNA on Ancestry so I uploaded it to Prometheus and then sent the file to the doctor. They seemed to appreciate the information even if it was a bit much. They did figure out what was going on but I can't remember what it was.

The Genomelink results I received for my ethnicity percentages were very different. I don’t think it is correct when Ancestry says you are 100% European and Genomelink says you are African, Asian, and Native American.
Ancestry didn't report my extra ethnicities either.
Ancestry I was irish spanish (spain) and african genome says I'm irish spanish italian and chilean
Are you referring to the basic results or the paid ancestry results? I haven’t seen one European get anything other than European on the FREE basic breakdown. The add ons are pointless.
@@Elias_Truth I didn’t pay for the Genomelink link results, I just uploaded my DNA from Ancestry to their website and I can view the ethnicity estimates for free. It gives a breakdown with percentages like Ancestry. I paid for the Ancestry DNA test and have built my family back to 10 generations and the results are accurate tracing all my ancestors back to Europe.

My true ancestry is pretty cool. I am a close match to 3 Minoans found at Knossos Crete as well as many other bodies found around the Mediterranean and few other places in Europe. I am ethnically Greek so this is not surprising but still quite interesting

I've compared my DNA between a few sites.. MyHeritage is a good place to start, as you say. What I think is that MyHeritage detect your most recent ancestry while for example Genomelink deceit a lot more further back and can calculate percentage much better. If you know how I mean.
I’m pretty sure Promethease is pronounced PRO-MEE-THE-ACE, a hybrid of Prometheus and the suffix for enzymes, -ase.
better use ipa transcription to explain pronunciation: proʊˈmiːθieɪs to avoid ambiguousness from english spelling and pronunciation

We bought on my heritage for my husband did not know you had to do them why to find out who the father was waited 65 years still don't know nothing and they don't explain their site very well and I did my ancestry which was great but then they closed me out of my own account and then send it to 23andMe without me saying they could I don't know about DNA 🧬 sites because they say you're private and I don't think so being very upsetting I've call them about the test I made over so many complaints about what's happened no response back but this was great information coming from you
I first did an ancestry test on MyHeritage and after I recieved my results are was partly surprised as I expected most of it. I later found out on google that you could upload the raw data from MyHeritage to another platform. MyTrueAncestry sounded very interesting because it compares your data with that from archaeological digs and can tell what groups your ancestors belonged to. That goes into a little more detail.
My 3 largest groups on MyHeritage were Balkans at 50%, then Balts & Eastern Europeans at around 30%, and then "West Asians" at around 13%.
Roughly speaking, the result on MyTrueAncestry:
- about 26% "Illyrians"
- approx. 40% "Celtic-Germanic" (mainly Ostrogoths, Gepids, Scordisci, Gauls...)
- Rest Scythians & Slavs for the most part
My parents are both ethnic Serbs from Bosnia and Serbia respectively. The result (especially MyTrueAncestry) makes a lot of sense in my opinion since most of the peoples mentioned above once lived or still live in the Balkans. I am more than satisfied with this result.

Hey Matt, thanks for the video. I'm thinking about getting a DNA test kit for my parents. We don't really care about the ancestry side of things but we do want health information (so they can pay more attention to the potential risks). Of all the videos you've done on DNA kits, what would you recommend?
23andMe would be great for this. My family did this one first and it was pretty accurate. My adoptive/step mom has cancer so it helped us get a better idea of her health risks.

My Doc suggested 23 and Me when I inquired about genetic testing (much more affordable than seeing a geneticist for fun). 23&M does have good health reports, but looking further into the results they only test 2 or 3 markers for each disease rather than all known markers. I’m planning on running it through Promethease for further comparison.

I have been having a questionable illness that flares up every few weeks to months and puts me out of commission for days - weeks each time.
My doc is trying to narrow it down and it is looking like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which is a cousin of Long Covid. I think I'm remembering that correctly.
My doc said I have low folate and B12. I am taking supplements for both.

Just to let you know, the steppe pastoralist component of your ancestry does not mean ancient shepherds. It means Indo-European war bands that conquered prehistoric Europe lol.
Suggestion - would a chart be possible for "war by continent" For example, Europe would have various lines representing time/duration of a war, width of line might represent casualties. I know its a bit morbid but war is a fact seemingly unavoidable. Im thinking gaps representing peaceful times will be rather rare. Anyhow just a thought.

Yes, most of the testing companies allow you to download your raw dna file after you receive your results.

When I do a dna test on myheritage I don't get the Mt and y dna haplogroups or do I? But mytrueancestry needs your haplogroups included in the raw data or am I wrong?

I tested on 23&me and ancestry. 23 said I have 6.1% German and French DNA. Ancestry says I have no German or French DNA. My great grand mother is German and all of her ancestors are either French or German going back to 1511. So much for accuracy.
I just uploaded to Genomelink and it was the least exact when it came to where my ancestor, plus almost every trait they said I had was wrong !

the thing is you have thousands of years of people moving around the continents before your grandmother was born. while accuracy can be off between tests; someone who has had a lineage with 3 generations of japanese people marrying other japanese people but all lived in france... the results would say they were japanese not franco.
not saying your results were wrong just that they might be real but in a diff way then expected

I love genealogy, and I prefer to do it the old fashioned way, not DNA testing. I've been able to trace one line of my family back to the Magna Carta, they were there making bad ol King John sign it, lol! One guy, the OG ancestor who came to America in 1609 came here, built a business, had kids, then later in his life he left everyone and went to the islands, lol! I love doing it this way because I get to meet more kinfolk, and am finding out that we are truly all connected. See, that's why I am pro peace, because all wars are are fights between different members of the family, the human family. We might be different ethnicities, but we are the same race, otherwise we wouldn't be able to breed together, which we do. My passion is history and anthropology, archeology too, and if history has taught us as one species, homo sapiens sapiens, anything is that we have GOT to evolve, especially in the mind, and stop this insanity. That's what war is, insanity, as I was taught in AA, what is the definition of insanity? Doing the same damn thing over and over expecting a different result. I may not do anything that would be defined as important in my life as far as man sees it, but I consider my kids and my work to contribute to saving this branch of the family history to be worthy enough.
I really want to try these sites, but first I need to get my dna tested. Idk which company to use since I am a moroccan amazigh (riffian amazigh) and I heard that myheritage and 23andme aren't really accurate for North Africans. Does anyone know what I should do?
Thanks for that info. I have some Northern African but 23andme didn't identify anything specific. There are some good videos on UA-cam covering all the major companies and which one are best for certain things. Good luck!
@@imaginempress3408 I heard from other North Africans that familytreedna is the most accurate for us. There is just one problem- if you think there might be some toshavim (jews that are imazighen/berbers) blood in your family then this company might misread it as simply iberian dna

It makes more sense to take 23andme or ancestry and then upload it to myheritage.
This is what i did
Myheritage dna test came gave me 2 ethnicities . My mother is 1/2 German guess what didn't show up on myheritage tests . Everybody else that I've uploaded my Ancestrydna to has give me at least 6 .
I’ve only paid for well I have Cesar but do you match any of them in 200cm range? because I do and I don’t know if it’s a fluke or like what I mean obviously, it shows me on my chromosomes but..
Only recently tried finding my ancestry after myHeritage started to offer the service again. They had converted their facilities to do COVID PCR tests for almost two years (with the nagging question if they had also gathered DNA data in secret while doing the PCRs...). The results came as boring as it could be with 95%+ of certain mono-ethnic ancestry. In the mixed-up US it's probably not so common.
The thing with DNA matching: it absolutely cannot be used to frame you for a crime. That’s just…not how it works. They can’t download information about your DNA, and if they could, they could not use it to manufacture DNA evidence on a person or an object related to a crime.
Now if you, or a relative, commit a crime with DNA evidence, and your DNA doesn’t already exist in CODIS, a genetic genealogist might be asked to use DNA related to a crime to try to find the perpetrator. The criminal DNA when uploaded would return a number of matches; the public trees of those matches can be effectively reverse engineered to determine one or more people LIKELY to be the suspect. The police then check public records and criminal case files to narrow down the suspect. Then they try to get a sample of the suspect’s DNA-that’s when you get the stories of napkins or disposable cups used by the suspect being retrieved from the garbage. That’s tested against the DNA from the crime scene. If it’s a match, the police get a warrant.
You are not culpable for the crime. You are not directly impacted by your relative’s crime, unless you have a personal relationship. You may never even know. But you’ve helped bring a criminal to justice.
A similar process can be used to identify cold case victims with no identification. The recent identification of the Somerville Man is a good example. You might help give a victim back their name, and give their family closure on a long-missing relative.

I've never been very interested in dna test as from the ancestry angle it will likely be extremely boring (almost fully finnish which was basically confirmed by my mom getting one) but your videos really raised by interest on the health angle as I wasn't aware there were several so comprehensive options and I definitely have some genetic disorders. (I have diagnosed ADHD, hearing loss and hypermobility spectrum disorder as well as strong suspicion of hEDS)
I'm the opposite. I'd be interested in building a more extensive family tree, but I don't want to know about health issues since I'd be worried about many diseases that either have a small chance of happening or are inevitable and thus I don't want to know about them.

Yes. But you'd need to create a separate account for each upload.
GEDmatch allows you to upload multiple tests (I think 4 for free) on the same account, and you can compare them to each other as well as see who matches well with both vs with just one.

I am in multiethnic person with a complex DNA I went from 47,4% to 21,9% for Europe and 22,8% to 45.4% for Asia... only my African side was stable (29% to 29.5%).
1. Each company uses a slightly to somewhat different "chip" with their own criteria and model so values between testing sites will always vary. 2. Within each company they evaluate new findings, develop new models and update on a fairly regular basis. There can be very big changes when updates are implemented and that's always good. It means the estimates (and they're always going to be estimates) are getting better based on current knowledge. 3. That knowledge can always go out the window or radically transformed based on new findings and this is a very young industry using very recent information from very recently developed areas of study. Using DNA to study migration patterns and individuals from burials a thousand or much longer ago is new! 4. Look forward to new updates. They're all good

The trick is to wait until they hack the database and the leak is made public. Police looks into it and discovers that the data was sold to other companies. Then they fix their security system to be more secure. A fine is issued and new laws are passed by the EU to prevent this selling from happening. Now I can make a DNA test with safety, I just hope it happens before I die

Not an issue with any of your DNA test videos so much as something interesting:
Intersex people exist and can have very weird and interesting unique experiences with DNA tests. It is, for example, possible for someone who mostly matches female archetypal features to have a Y chromosome, and thus (I imagine) have access to the genetic data that lies therein. While your generalization makes sense in these videos, sex is only binary as a classification, there's no singular determining factor, even if there's factors that determine things in the vast, vast majority of cases.
DNA tests are actually helping us have more accurate data on how many intersex people exist, and how many variations and unique types of intersex conditions are out there. The numbers are actually higher than most people think. About 1/100 people have at least 1 element often associated with intersex conditions, and about 1/1200 people have a clearly defined intersex condition (before you worry about potential underlying health risks in yourself, the vast majority of intersex conditions are hormone related, and either you would already know by the time of puberty, or your body isn't notably effected by it. A lot of intersex conditions are also at a very base genetic level and seem to have almost no physical effect on the body).
Intersex people can face a lot of stigma, and unfortunately are also often put through intrusive surgeries long before they can consent to them (often soon after their birth). The more we can learn about these conditions, and break the stigma of them simply being irrelevant mutations too rare to change anything for, the better. While this kind of DNA test isn't working towards that, and at most might have some quirks for intersex folks, the underlying technology and how inexpensive and widespread it has become is very impactful.

Has anybody ever tried it? It says I have a bunch of matches and more matches than others. But I wonder how accurate is this. It doesn't tell you what the max and the minimum numbers are to have a connection with someone else or some sort of ancient person.

Im türkish. I compared my results vs ancestry. On ancestry I just got majority Anatolia and the caucuses Persian and a little Baltic and Balkan. And on genome i got 30 percent European. Idk what to believe
