Shalom Harlow: Made for Haute Couture -

  • She was part of the anti-supermodels-waiflike beauties who seemed more tangible than the out-of-reach superstars like Naomi, Linda, and Christy. Shalom Harlow represented an elegant and graceful idea of beauty with a face and body that was made for haute couture. Tim Blanks looks back on the career of the Canadian native and her rise to the top.

Luis Luna Fierce in all honesty, I prefer the models then. They not only had a special something that the girls lack today (after all, they gain so much popularity without social media). And they had much better walks down the runway...much more personality (and they tended to walk with their legs straight. Not bent like they do now). Though, I do understand that that is because of the designers choice. I think the walks of yesteryear allowed the clothing to flow more beautifully and it showed better. There is a reason why they had the title _Super_ before model. Now they just add the super to any model of the moment. Though there are some _great_ top models now, With the exception of a small handful, there aren't any real new Supermodels anymore, just top models.

Models then knew how to be womanly women. Today models lack personality and fierceness. Models like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid as well as her sister don't really deserve the careers they have. Money put them there, back then these models were naturally beautiful

I think shes my favorite model beside Naomi Campbell.Shalom is really beautiful and she has a great stage presence. Does anyone else notice that Shalom as well as the other models of that time had actual hips and breasts like an actual woman?
They were still slender but they looked stronger, didn't gave those skinny chicken legs that look like they would snap at the tiniest trauma.

This just my opinion but the super models and models in the 90’s really sold the clothes through each one of the girls personalities , how they walked , how they were in photographs ... “ they wore the cloths and worked it in the industry” .
Models I’m seeing in 2018 it’s like the clothes were the models and so many of the models seem afraid and fearful.
It’s sad even In Chanel shows I don’t see any personality , no sassy strutting down the cat walk no personality.
The girls in the 90’s really sold the clothes and were worth every penny they were paid and on a photo shoot it’s much easier to work with a professional and a model who can work it !

Just incase people are wondering, Shalom does not have any Jewish background whatsoever. As she said herself, the reason why they named her Shalom is because they are hippies.

    • @KarinaSwan
      @KarinaSwan 8 місяців тому +1

Yet her parents' and bother's names are Jewish. Just because born in Canada and maybe not practicing Judaism, doesn't mean they aren't. And choosing a Hebrew word out of nowhere, just because they're hippies? It can happen, but rarely with these two, they clearly wanted that definition for their daughter's life, but if it was just a hippy way of thinking about names, then they'd continue that way for her brothers. Also Shalom's face looks Jewish to me. Maybe they like that mystery, maybe they don't want people to know or don't know it themselves, but feels like she is.

Models from the 90s are no comparison to the models now. The way they walked down the runway and turned, They walked a little bit slower so you can watch and absorb their beauty. The models nowadays don't have the flare. They walk way too fast and there is no edge or flare about them. Perhaps that's just how it's supposed to be from now on. When it comes to Shalom, I was always struck that she can't be "placed" with her "origins" which gave her a great mysterious vibe. That on top of a fabulous walk and swoosh with clothes. I always felt that the girls in the mid-late 2000's should give Shalom a lot of credit for the drama that she brought to the runway. That Swoosh. When it comes to today's models, Adut, Bella, Kendall, and Vitora C. They have a look- but can't strut. Sorry Gals.

Thank you for noting Shalom Harlow. When I started paying attention to fashion Shalom had just broken on to the scene. What got me was her face and her walk, they were perfectly aligned with who she was or what she wanted to project. Wether modern, romantic, foreign , exotic, sexy and fun, etc.
At the time (her heyday) everyone was interested in this technology , soon to be cyber phase in of the 90's. People were buying laptops and personal computers at an alarming rate. Cell Phone's and gadgets'. No wonder her unique features were perfectly fit in the season. She had a bit of a digitized or cyborg look taught face look, We could not place if she was she Asian or European, feminine beauty from the 1950's, approachable beauty.. maybe not?? Remember that when Shalom was at the top Bjork and Angelina Jolie in Hackers had become popular in the countercultures of the world. She was semi- real or not- real. All we did know was she was tall, slender with a graceful dancer walk perfect to showcase clothes.
Her walk, ooh her walk I could go on and on about it. Her strut was like a dancer that pushed up and out from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. Unlike Naomi's distinct strut that was ferocious force, Shalom's always looked like she was tight roping or spinning on a slim turn table, like a fairy or waif. It was beautiful to watch over and over again in the fashion video's and reminds me a bit of Audrey Hepburn in movie funny face or as you mentioned Karlie Kloss.
Thank you for mentioning this gamine. I appreciated her early influence.
    Stephen

Wtf?!?! Karlie is not bella or gigi karlie is the last supermodel and no one question if she isnt a supermodel or not cause she is. Comparing between the both of them isnt wrong at all . WTF r u taking about?!?! Karlie kloss THE supermodel whos always being praised and ppl say that we need models like her these days. Karlie kloss is karlie kloss u r making it sounds like she is gigi or bella

I had to replay that part a couple of times because it irked me a little. He wasn’t comparing them as models, he was comparing their leggy lean type of body that the both have.

Shalom, Amber, and Kate were the last 3 "supermodels" in my humble opinion. All the others after these three were and still are just "models".

One can argue that Gisele was the last supermodel, but she transitioned into Victoria Secret/Sports Illustrated pretty early on. Shalom, Amber, Kate, and maybe Carolyn Murphy were probaly the last group to build up their starpower within the parameters of high fashion.

She's so painfully gorgeous it hurts to look at. Like I don't even deserve to gaze upon her. Don't know if I want to be her or be with her gahdamn. No other models of today's time could ever make me feel the way Linda Evangelista and Shalom Harlow do.

Shalom performances on runway or in print just seem like she enjoys her work. Some models just imitate poses. Having so many talk about how great she is, but she is still single. Must be rough having people know your name but not know the person.

Well there was no instagram to help propell a model's career like Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss or Cara Delevighne.also today's models ( with the exception of a few ) lack any real personality or joy for the unique opportunity there life affords them and designers today seem more interested in the it girl of the minute ' to one's that has proven themselves and their ability for the business of making fashion fascinating .Thank the Fashion Goddess for models like Maria Carla Boscono , Natasha Poly and Anji Rubik along with a few others who bring life and glamour to the runway and pages of magazine editorials .
Today I don't even bother having a favorite model because to quote Ms.klum "one day your in 'and the next your OUT avedsane
