Shalom Harlow: Made for Haute Couture -
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- She was part of the anti-supermodels-waiflike beauties who seemed more tangible than the out-of-reach superstars like Naomi, Linda, and Christy. Shalom Harlow represented an elegant and graceful idea of beauty with a face and body that was made for haute couture. Tim Blanks looks back on the career of the Canadian native and her rise to the top.

Timeless beauty. That Alexander McQueen show was a moment in history.
Karlie is no where close to Shalom when it comes to modeling, Shalom is more than a model on the runway, she has been a performer a artist on the runway.
didiandfamily I feel there’s a sense of fun & quest about SH. She looks questioning & sophisticated, whereas the other girl looks self-satisfied & provincial.
I used to think like you but after see karlie walked jpg as Tida Bara I changed my mind
@@inesdelahoya2045 that is so well said!
Such catty comments 🤮
Those 90's top models were truly outstanding.
She's so gorgeous and her beauty is timeless.
Can you imagine being a model-scout and you spot an 18yo Shalom in the crowd? They must have thought they died and went to Heaven.
Yeah there are probably some beauties turn the job down too.
I couldn't thank you more for this video. please, Kendall and Gigi's fans, educate yourselves!
Luis Luna Fierce in all honesty, I prefer the models then. They not only had a special something that the girls lack today (after all, they gain so much popularity without social media). And they had much better walks down the runway...much more personality (and they tended to walk with their legs straight. Not bent like they do now). Though, I do understand that that is because of the designers choice. I think the walks of yesteryear allowed the clothing to flow more beautifully and it showed better. There is a reason why they had the title _Super_ before model. Now they just add the super to any model of the moment. Though there are some _great_ top models now, With the exception of a small handful, there aren't any real new Supermodels anymore, just top models.
I think that the models of the 90s were absolutely beautiful. The models of today do not even come close.
Models then knew how to be womanly women. Today models lack personality and fierceness. Models like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid as well as her sister don't really deserve the careers they have. Money put them there, back then these models were naturally beautiful
She's my favourite! Always stunning both in editorials and on the runway
Shalom WON model of the year in 1995 during the Fashion & Music Award 1995! She WON the BEST model title!
Tim Blanks is my Canadian Fashion Reporter hero! This is like a BIG surprise Christmas present of 2014 that I've SO MANY GREAT #TBT and other videos by Tim. I am binge watching a whole bunch of them for the last 2+ hours! To me, Tim is one of our Canadian national treasures. Enough said, I am going to spend a few more hours on Boxing Day 2014, relaxing and watching more of Tim's fashion videos! So much fun!
Shalom is so pretty and so sweet looking. Love her face so much.
I think shes my favorite model beside Naomi Campbell.Shalom is really beautiful and she has a great stage presence. Does anyone else notice that Shalom as well as the other models of that time had actual hips and breasts like an actual woman?
They were still slender but they looked stronger, didn't gave those skinny chicken legs that look like they would snap at the tiniest trauma.
Shes ICONIC !!
This just my opinion but the super models and models in the 90’s really sold the clothes through each one of the girls personalities , how they walked , how they were in photographs ... “ they wore the cloths and worked it in the industry” .
Models I’m seeing in 2018 it’s like the clothes were the models and so many of the models seem afraid and fearful.
It’s sad even In Chanel shows I don’t see any personality , no sassy strutting down the cat walk no personality.
The girls in the 90’s really sold the clothes and were worth every penny they were paid and on a photo shoot it’s much easier to work with a professional and a model who can work it !
The epitome of a model Muse #loveshalomharlow 👸🖤
Do a Yasmeen Ghauri profile please!!!
I've been sending emails to Tim Blank many times over. They need to do one for her..... Yasmeen Ghauri was so underrated supermodel during The Supermodel Era.. She was one of the best runway walk along with Naomi Campbell. She is in EVERY Versace Shows. She was also the one of the most exotic beauty as well. Come on Tim Blank... Yasmeen is Canadian too just like Linda and Shalom.
well i watch the some 90s documentary about supermodels which features yasmine ghauri she have some sort of elusive personality coming from an islamic background and conservative dad which she promise to herself that she will retire in modelling as soon as possible in the 90s and disappear she rarely give interview as well as she said she work as a model but doesnt wish to be a star
This comment is in all these videos. It didn't happen. Maybe Tim blank doesn't like her
Something about her face and the way she speaks reminds me of Liv Tyler
All kind of models back then was better than it is now! Even the fashion itself (magazines, clothes, photographs, models) everything was better before!
shess so fineee
What a treat!
You have your year wrong in the first video. its 1992, she was 18, and you interviewed her!
oshawa, ontario's own Shalom!!
i love models from before especially from the 90's. now the models From now don't have the personalety and when they walk is boring...they need to make more fun
Where are THE VIEWS PEOPLE!!! LIKE WTF??!!!
Nobody today compares to them NOBODY
The theatrical face of beauty was shalom Harlow
I despite most of today's models. Especially the most famous of these days. The ONLY one that I actually like is Karlie Kloss.
Ur comment is old but i just saw this vid on my recommendtions. Ppl here are bashing karlie kloss!!! The last supermodel of our generation. Like wtf?!?! Karlie isnt an ig model she started modeling in 2007. Wtf is wrong with ppl jusy because shalom is "old times" vibes then karlie kloss sucks and she is better?!? They are amazing models. No comparssions at all. Karlie was the shalom harlow of her pick in her carree
😮
I recently saw a picture of Linda Evangelista and she was overweight and had lost all her beauty. Such a shame. I wonder how Shalom is holding up....
Shalom is very active on Instagram now and she essentially looks the same.
ua-cam.com/video/p3zaEBott4E/v-deo.html
Такая она классная с кудряшками, естественная, ее красить только портить!
models then look like weman and models now loke like hangers...
Women**
Her voice almost sound like Candice swanepoel
Models then were model. Models now are just some kids on Instagram.
God I'm in loveeeeeeeee
Models 1990s 👌💥 vs nepomodels 2020🥱
Shalom was the first model to win the Vogue Model of the Year Award. If you think model -- you think Shalom. Elegance and Integrity - she defined her generation.
Gustav Mahler I thought that Karen Elson was the first winner of that award. I could be wrong.

i just watched a video of rupaul presenting vogue's model of the year award to shalom harlow in 1995!
You don’t know what goes behind the scenes and the decisions to advance a person over others.
Shalom was it. She had sex appeal, style grace, that turn, that walk, those eyes. I want more Shalom Harlow. She's so underrated.
Sex appeal? What the fuck?
Yes, totally. Her sex appeal, elegance, beauty, grace.. you said it well.
She was an Enigma, her body proportions were out of this world and that perfectly sculpted face to match. She really set the standard for supermodels, they really dont make em like that anymore.
she truly was and still is
Why are you all act like she was dead already
Just incase people are wondering, Shalom does not have any Jewish background whatsoever. As she said herself, the reason why they named her Shalom is because they are hippies.
Yet her parents' and bother's names are Jewish. Just because born in Canada and maybe not practicing Judaism, doesn't mean they aren't. And choosing a Hebrew word out of nowhere, just because they're hippies? It can happen, but rarely with these two, they clearly wanted that definition for their daughter's life, but if it was just a hippy way of thinking about names, then they'd continue that way for her brothers. Also Shalom's face looks Jewish to me. Maybe they like that mystery, maybe they don't want people to know or don't know it themselves, but feels like she is.
I didn't say it was inherently bad, just stating the facts. @@KarinaSwan
Shalom was the greatest muse of the two big British names -- Galliano and McQueen.
I thought Galliano was a Spanish surname.
Lissandra Freljord galliano was born in gibraltar a British possession next to spain, his both parents were spaniards also
Galliano seemed to go down the tubes
Annabelle Nielson was McQueen's no.1 muse, not Harlow.
@@sahej6939Drug abuse and Antisemitism.
All those women who have the height and classic bone structure..... When they have that DANCE BACKGROUND... THEY SLAY THAT CAMERA AND CATWALK !!!!!!! BRAVO SHALOM !!!!!
I know she wasn't one of the main supers but I always found myself favoring shalom and considered her a super myself while Naomi was my second fave. There's something so graceful yet cool about her and that's something that quite lacks these days with models. Shalom is just everything.
models today fucking suck, karlie kloss can get bent
+TonyLeClubKid Ah, actually Shalom was DEFINITELY a super model-right up there with Cindy, Linda Naomi, Amber and several others. Gonna have to really disagree with you on this one.
No comparison. Models in 90’s were magical.
She is so beautiful and unique looking. Is she part Asian? She reminds of a Eurasian girl I know.
Like her beauty is from kyrgystan
Asian that look eurasian with blue eyes, striking features
What a great, timeless beauty! You could put her in any time period, and she would shine. Everytime I see her, though, I think she would have been a sensation during silent film era. There would not have been a Clara Bow because Shalom would have nudged her out. Clara could not have carried Shalom's makeup case, IMO
Fearless beauty who is not too analytical, while performing for art's sake and not for followers or likes.
Shalom is one of my favourite models of all time. She's performed in a way that was akin to Linda Evangelista -- she saw the fantasy of the designers and breathed life into the fashion through acting and embodying the role.
Olivia Wilde kinda looks like Shalom.
She definitely does, but a much lesser version, IMO.
Because of their jaws.
Both classic beauties, but also somehow exotic.
Never
Please do yasmeen ghauri as a throwback......😁
your comparison of shalom and karlie is really interesting. very similar presence. and both totally fabulous on the runway
Same voice too. Shalom is superior though.
Karlie cannot compare to the perfection of Shalom. Karlie is a stick figure with a forgettable face
It is unfair. Karlie is only a common face, however Shalom is a real queen.
@@riase and still the best model out of the models that came after the glorious era of Naomi, Shalom, and Claudia.
The most overrated model ever
She had never been underrated..infact she was one of the most popular 90s supermodels to look at in every job she nailed.. depends when u were born..who u followed...models today r mostly trashies....very several of them who maintained the qualities a fashion model should have..
No, she is an anti supermodel
Kim Long how would you explain anti supermodel?
why the fuck i did comment under this vid. such a loser i was.
Uhh -- she won model of the year the first time it was available. So no, everyone knows she's a legend -- like all the true fashion people.
Gorgeous!! This is how models should be, not nepotism (Kendal, Gigi, Lili Moss and many other celebrity children’s)
So right on that.
Beautiful and intelligent. Always brings to mind for me, aesthetically and intellectually; the reincarnation of Hedy Lamar (but with a smidge of Disney’s Snow White thrown in).
She will forever be my fav. model of all time!! She could bring the drama needed to the fashion show!!!
There's no one as graceful and regal as Shalom, she's like a princess turned haute-couture muse, that Alexander McQueen moment is iconic. I think models back then and now are not that different, I'm sure that in 2029 we'll discuss the same question and Karlie, Natasha Poly or Giselle Bundchen will be considered legendary, each generation has good models.
I don't think so but that is just my opinion. No one cares for models nowadays not like before at least.
This is not correct. The interview Shalom is giving was in 1992 and Shalom was already on Paris runways in the spring of 1992. You can easily find her on UA-cam giving this interview at Ford Paris in 92 and doing the collections then. Shalom and Karlie...no comparison. Shalom was graceful, she was allowed to move freely, Karlie even though I like her, she cannot compare and should not be compared to Shalom who was a genius model. I followed her career from 93 to I would say now. I would love to see her comeback. She had the beautiful full face and slim long body that was so different at the time. Truly a genius beauty.
Shalom is like my happy pill when it comes to Supermodels.
She seem always smiling, and so friendly. KIndly like Christy Turlington in some ways.
It's no comparison! The models of the past was simply the Best!!!!!!
the most beautiful girl in the world
Shalom was in a league all her own, very intuitive, resourceful, subtle at times, bold at others, and very artful.
Models from the 90s are no comparison to the models now. The way they walked down the runway and turned, They walked a little bit slower so you can watch and absorb their beauty. The models nowadays don't have the flare. They walk way too fast and there is no edge or flare about them. Perhaps that's just how it's supposed to be from now on. But i'm still going with what I think really stands out. Shalom, Linda, and Naomi, Christy and all those iconic gorgeous beauties.
Models then..they knew what they were doing..they knew how to carry the cloth with the right attitude...together with excellent face expressions...they were very charismatic n knew how to make use of the stage space n props provided..they were creative, fearless...
sincere in accomplishing every task or assignment given... they continiously learning from time to time n never get over excited of things around them...(not a culture shock) they knew how to stimulate n manipulate every each chance they had..they nailed it! Thats y they were all remembered!
Thank you so much to the guy on the subway who said I look like a young Shalom Harlow.
Just looked her up, I'm a 19 year old with body dysmorphia and you just boosted my confidence so much
The most beautiful model ever. Natural, elegant, graceful, real.
Models today cant compare to the models of the late 80s and 90s. The models then seemed to be more authentic and had more personality. That being said, I love Shalom, she has a special quality about her that makes her standout. Also, Tim, can you upload the Christian Dior Fall/Winter 1997 show? I keep looking for it and never can find it online.
When it comes to Shalom, I was always struck that she can't be "placed" with her "origins" which gave her a great mysterious vibe. That on top of a fabulous walk and swoosh with clothes. I always felt that the girls in the mid-late 2000's should give Shalom a lot of credit for the drama that she brought to the runway. That Swoosh. When it comes to today's models, Adut, Bella, Kendall, and Vitora C. They have a look- but can't strut. Sorry Gals.
Thank you for noting Shalom Harlow. When I started paying attention to fashion Shalom had just broken on to the scene. What got me was her face and her walk, they were perfectly aligned with who she was or what she wanted to project. Wether modern, romantic, foreign , exotic, sexy and fun, etc.
At the time (her heyday) everyone was interested in this technology , soon to be cyber phase in of the 90's. People were buying laptops and personal computers at an alarming rate. Cell Phone's and gadgets'. No wonder her unique features were perfectly fit in the season. She had a bit of a digitized or cyborg look taught face look, We could not place if she was she Asian or European, feminine beauty from the 1950's, approachable beauty.. maybe not?? Remember that when Shalom was at the top Bjork and Angelina Jolie in Hackers had become popular in the countercultures of the world. She was semi- real or not- real. All we did know was she was tall, slender with a graceful dancer walk perfect to showcase clothes.
Her walk, ooh her walk I could go on and on about it. Her strut was like a dancer that pushed up and out from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. Unlike Naomi's distinct strut that was ferocious force, Shalom's always looked like she was tight roping or spinning on a slim turn table, like a fairy or waif. It was beautiful to watch over and over again in the fashion video's and reminds me a bit of Audrey Hepburn in movie funny face or as you mentioned Karlie Kloss.
Thank you for mentioning this gamine. I appreciated her early influence.
Stephen
Very thoughtful observations, I totally agree!!
My absolute favourite model of all time, nobody had a walk and presence like hers.
Why do I feel some type of way about Conde Nast comparing this legend to Karlie K?
Wtf?!?! Karlie is not bella or gigi karlie is the last supermodel and no one question if she isnt a supermodel or not cause she is. Comparing between the both of them isnt wrong at all . WTF r u taking about?!?! Karlie kloss THE supermodel whos always being praised and ppl say that we need models like her these days. Karlie kloss is karlie kloss u r making it sounds like she is gigi or bella
I had to replay that part a couple of times because it irked me a little. He wasn’t comparing them as models, he was comparing their leggy lean type of body that the both have.
why not Relax, people are allowed to have opinions.
She was and is still my favorite when it comes high fashion. That iconic Alexander McQueen show made her a household name. One of the best supermodels ever!!!
Aubrey plaza reminds me of Shalom
Gosh I never knew bout this super model, but after seeing this, she is gorgeous, her walk, her body, her face, her eyes and everything so perfect.
They are literally twins, Amber and Shalom. They spoke together in one sentence.
Shalom, Amber, and Kate were the last 3 "supermodels" in my humble opinion. All the others after these three were and still are just "models".
I totally agree with you.!
One can argue that Gisele was the last supermodel, but she transitioned into Victoria Secret/Sports Illustrated pretty early on. Shalom, Amber, Kate, and maybe Carolyn Murphy were probaly the last group to build up their starpower within the parameters of high fashion.
She's so painfully gorgeous it hurts to look at. Like I don't even deserve to gaze upon her. Don't know if I want to be her or be with her gahdamn. No other models of today's time could ever make me feel the way Linda Evangelista and Shalom Harlow do.
love her, so energetic and charming on the runway
Increíble, única, maravillosa, llena de gracia, intemporal, un milagro
I adore Shalom! Her runway walk is fucking incredible. She makes fashion look so effortless. Wow.
Another gorgeous Canadian.
She is gorgeous, such a beautiful Face, such Grace 💝
I adore Shalom!!!
Says.. Shalom was scouted at a Cure concert in 1989 at 16 yrs old.
Also says.. In this interview from 1995, Shalom was 18 yrs old.
🤔 Huh?? Lol
That face though… almost as perfect as Christy's
tictocmm the two most timeless model faces 😩
Agreed! When Shalom first appeared at age 16, everyone including myself was saying that "she's the next Christy." Miss these two the most.
Shalom performances on runway or in print just seem like she enjoys her work. Some models just imitate poses. Having so many talk about how great she is, but she is still single. Must be rough having people know your name but not know the person.
I clearly remember mesmerized by her on that show where her white ball dress was spray printed on by two machines. It was iconic!
Well there was no instagram to help propell a model's career like Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss or Cara Delevighne.also today's models ( with the exception of a few ) lack any real personality or joy for the unique opportunity there life affords them and designers today seem more interested in the it girl of the minute ' to one's that has proven themselves and their ability for the business of making fashion fascinating .Thank the Fashion Goddess for models like Maria Carla Boscono , Natasha Poly and Anji Rubik along with a few others who bring life and glamour to the runway and pages of magazine editorials .
Today I don't even bother having a favorite model because to quote Ms.klum "one day your in 'and the next your OUT avedsane
+Clay Byrd I wouldn't put Karlie with those other 2. She did get to the top without social media.
Karlie didn't need Instagram. She was huge in the industry before it.
Ananya Yoda you're absolutely correct
Faiz Fenty my mistake and I agree
It's auf wiedersehen (German for goodbye), not avedsane.
Love Shalom and Amber at Chloe spring 2000 ready-to-wear all those girls were absolutely amazing on that show make a special on that please
I love Shalom dearly and wish her a beautiful and soft as silk birthday!:)))
She's so gorgeous.......
Her face got prettier as she matured, very pretty eye shape, eyebrows, and cheekbones. So beautiful.
She was fantastic on the catwalk. She could walk with the best of them!!!
she WAS the best of them.
She’s definitely my favorite haute couture model
I obsessed how cool & beautiful her Name 100 % one from my twins will be have this Name .
There is nothing much to think. Models then were doing real modeling.
Also Brazilian Ana Beatriz Barros
I miss our real model from the 90's .....real walk ...them
Yasmeen Ghauri was my favorite and still is.
Shalom is and was a fantastic model, sadly we don't seem to see girls like them anymore, please can you profile YASMEEN GHAURI
I don't think Style.com bother looking at the comments - there never seems to be a reply or actual listening to us viewers like to see,
One of my favorite models.
Her and Yasmeen Ghauri are two of the most underrated
