  • Today, I am going to explain 5 reasons why you should not do a PhD or why a PhD might not be a great option for you.
00:12 - Higher selection bar - In the US, usually, it is tougher to get into a PhD program than a Master’s program. For example - let’s say, to get into an MS program if the requirement was 300 GRE score, for a PhD you might require 310.
01:14 - Time - A PhD is a long time commitment and it can range anywhere from 4 years to 7 years. Although the average is 5 years, nothing is certain, and there is not a hard bound timeline. Your advisor can change, your data might get corrupt, there might be a pandemic.
01:50 - Academia is extremely competitive - There is extremely high competition in academia. If your goal is to become a professor, I am being honest, let me tell you it is going to be tough for most subjects. There is a lot of supply than demand.
03: 49 - Painful supervisor - You might hate it, your supervisor might be a pain. Sometimes, if you have a difficult supervisor, life can be very hard.
04:54 - Loneliness - A PhD can be very lonely, although you will have friends, 90% of the time you will be working alone.

What are the benefits of applying high ranked universities?
Is there any chance for average students to get scholarship in low ranked universities?
