You did good. Septic is the way to go for worry free waste disposal. Like, you, I can't see paying a fortune for a toilet. That money can be utilized better somewhere else.
So there is absolutely no chance your septic system will contaminate your spring? Do you plan on using a regular septic service company to come pump out your tank and how often do you think you will have to do that?
An old fashioned outhouse would still be a great idea to have because if it's built right there is no smell or bacteria to worry about. Plus you would be surprised at how many people would appreciate it just for an added bonus.

split level composting toilet would of worked fine. they only need emptied few times a year. you deffinetely want to have a grey water diversion system so your shower and washing water does not go into a tiny 500 gallon septic tank. If that clogs while guests are there, it will only last a day or two before it backs up and makes a mess. with a grey water diversion system a 500 gallon tank can last 2x longer and works better because the bacteria work better when more concentrated. but in the end people cant' deal wtih thier own shit so a water based toilet will get you more rentals.

Top flush vs handle. Handle is full flush every time. Top flush is half or full flush.
