I’ve just got my 6500 4x4 with a dump body on it, truck looks great but the suspension is stiff but the most disappointing part of it is the lack of power. With load in it, the truck struggles going up a hill. I ordered the most capable build Chevy makes and not happy with the power compared to my 2019 ram 5500 diesel. Is it just me or do you feel as if it needs more power. Without load is ok but once I haul things with it, it’s a different story. Already looking to see what performance upgrade is available for this truck.
The truck has been derated to 350 horsepower. Also with that said the HD trucks were designed so anyone could drive them weather you put a teenager in the driver's seat that wants to floor the fuel pedal or a responsible driver. It will be a hard task to tear these trucks up in my opinion. I agree they do lack power compared to a 3500 truck for sure. Give it some time before you give the truck a thumbs down. I personally think a tune will be great for these trucks from 350 to 400-425 horse . If you come across any tune for them let me know.
Been a couple years but how's the 6500 holding up? Still got same opinion about lack of power or has it grown on you? Found any hills the Chevy got stuck on or will it do any hills just slow?
Man I’m really liking the info you’re putting out on this truck. It’s a beast of a truck for sure. What’s the most weight that you have pulled behind it? I’m considering one for hotshot or something like that. I understand that these such as the Ram 5500, and F550 has been detuned but I’m looking for a work truck to pull stuff not a race truck.
Question: I'm looking at buying one of these for my ranch to haul hay with a gooseneck. Would you buy the chevy version or the international version. ????
Either is fine. They both go down the same line being built. The only difference between the two are the badges ( chevy or international). It's all in what you prefer. My 5500 is marked with a Navistar sticker on the door pillar with the vin. If I were in your shoes I'd think about what dealership is more convenient for you in your location as far as needing unsuspected repairs. I can say if you are leaning towards chevy make sure your local dealership is set up to service the truck. You my find yourself having to go out of your way for repairs. I now have 50k miles on mine and will be dropping it off tomorrow for some minor warranty work. My dealer is 9 miles from me. If they have to lift the truck off the ground I'll have to take it 32 miles to a dealer with the correct equipment to do the work. All said I still have no regrets in purchasing my truck. If you do decide to buy one of these trucks honk the horn and make sure you like the sound before you buy it lol. Have the dealer change it if you don't like it. Mine sounded like it should have been on a prius.
I just got a 4500 4x4. Someone needs to offer a front mud flap. The front tires are slinging mud and water clear into the bed. Do you have the same experience?
It's quite the list, most of them are just inconvenient issues. Braking death wobble (the majority of the issue I have with this truck and its gone in every time with this as an issue), skips gears and holds in gear, abs kicks on while driving on dry pavement at random times and speeds(haven't pinned that one down yet), 4x4 won't engage (yes locked hubs prior), it'll no start on me every once in awhile(same as the abs, doesn't happen frequently enough to pin down) , for awhile if I hit a bump too hard it would light up a Christmas tree across the dash. I regret trading in my f250 6.7 every day. I wish it was a good truck, but I've got just shy of 10 on it and at least 1000 of that is driving to the one dealer in the state that can lift them.
Greatt looking rig Congrats on such a good buy, I,m still looking to buy and haul a 5th wheel trlr @ 18,ooo ibs and your rig is too much for me but a dulley is in my future and new or used 350 & 450 are ok at the moment but are no bargains @ 80 grand plus air ride. but thks for the insight.
Medium duty is anything rated between 14,001-26,000 GVWR and would include any truck in the Class 4-6 range. Heavy duty is Class 7 and 8 and requires a CDL to drive unless it's an RV.
I'm looking for one to hotshot. Maybe not a 4x4 but it will be a 4 door. How does it pull down the interstate highway? Would you go with lower gears? What speed does it like to run loaded? I would like to be able to cruise 75/80. Thanks for your help and time.
Well my truck is governed at 75. It has 4.10 gears. A 373 gear would be better for cruising down the road. If you do decide to get one I'd suggest getting one with air ride. My truck likes 65 mph with the 4.10 and it hauls a gooseneck just fine
As someone who has driven Similar trucks for work that horn is the worst!!! Hoe much do you tow on the daily? And fuel economy on somthing like this? Size of tanks you added. Tha ks for th we video
I'm roughly 28,000 to 30,000 pounds when I haul with the truck which is about 90% of the time and is mostly in the country. With that said I get an average of 10-10.5 MPG. The truck has 2 fuel tanks that hold a total of 65 gallons combined. And yes the horn SUCKS lol
@@chrisward405 thank you!!! Asked the question, then saw your other videos, thank you for the response. I run a small lawn care company in tulsa, Oklahoma. And for the price point I think this size truck is the way to go. Love the videos. Very informative. I have a CDL so hearing somebody speak on how loads handle and how the truck handles the loads is great! Thank you for the information keep up the work.
Hey man awesome truck. I also Just got a 5500 brand new. Just wondering if you had any coolant leaks yet . I only have 2 k miles and one of my coolant hose blew. Went to dealer and they said sorry can’t get parts for couple months. Anyways just trying to see if anyone else has this issue
I haven't had any issues out of my 5500HD. She just turned 15,000 miles. I really hope they get you taken care of sooner than a couple months. I haven't heard of this being an issue with these trucks. You might be able to check with international as these trucks are the same as their CV class trucks. They go down the same production line
Gm wanted to get back into the medium duty class. International was struggling in the medium duty class with previous issues with wiring harnesses and lost a lot of customers. Gm and International got together and basically solved the issues each were having. The frame, axles, and a couple other components including transmission options are International. The cab, wiring, interior, and engine are GM. Only difference is the emblem on the steering wheel and the grill between the 2 brands. The wiring issues with International started in the early 2000's. I'm honestly glad they joined with GM to design a good looking dependable truck. I've always been a fan of International. Lol I just bought a 1992 International dump truck which will be on the next video
Should of come optioned with the 10 speed and high horse powered Duramax. Thought about buying a 4x4 6500 crew cab for a hot shot truck but they're not rated like the 3500 is. Figured you could get a 6500 4x4 crew cab to haul a 35k#'s. But it won't.
@@bladenrexroth2555 total. Truck, fifth wheel camper loaded to the gills, 100 gallons of fresh water on the truck bed, fire wood for 4 days, another 16 foot deck over trailer behind the camper with side x side and 4 wheeler
@@chrisward405 would you suggest this truck for hot shotting? I'd imagine the ride would be more comfortable when loaded. I'll be upgrading to a new truck and Diamond C step deck this up coming summer. The 6500 4x4 HD is really what I'd like in crew cab cab and chassis. But wasnt sure it was rated heavy. Definitely want a crew cab rated that heavy over the reg cab 2wd 3500.
Beautiful truck, I know what you mean about a work truck. I have a ram 5500 with a Eby aluminum flat bed that works for me. People dont know how stiff these trucks are,you fell every bump in the road. I also thought about the kitleman system but it's to expensive for me. I use my truck to pull my dump trailer and my bobcat around. DOT around here in Maryland have a real problem with working guys using these 3500 towing 30,000 lbs and not having the right equipment and the right ply tires on the trucks. I paid less than a3500 for my 5500. People at the dealerships dont care what you use your truck for, they said it'll haul 30,000 lbs. That wht I went with the5500 . Good luck with your truck, its good looking g but the HORN lol.
Took delivery of one of these diesel 5500 with 4x4 a month or so ago. Very much dislike it vs my F550's and other medium duty trucks. Very rough ride, mirrors wayyyy too small (extended length should be standard,) 4x4 engagement is very cumbersome, and traction control seems to light up very frequently- even on dry, straight roadways. Hood also moves and jiggles more than any tilt-forward hood ive ever seen. No option (from Navistar or GM) on front splash guards/fenderettes also sucks.... About 600 miles on mine so far... i will say the air conditioning is great though!
Murphy's law never fails, I believe there is no traffic on any other days but day when you made the video. I could hear you swearing at those bypassing cars every minute! But your patience are strong enough to hold the anger. I would be like what in @#$% he'll all this @#$% cars started @#$% flying through 75mph on 45mph County road usually no any @#$% traffic!
@@richardgreen7821 I agree. I hated raising the hood on my other duramaxs just to add DEF. The new pickups are by the fuel fill now. Not sure if they will do the same on the new medium duty trucks
@@chrisward405 Most of these trucks aren't OTR so most guys are probably only using def 1 time every month or 2 and now they can't accidently stick the def nozzle in the diesel tank.I kinda thought it was a good idea.
BTW beautiful truck and I really like the engine access with the tilt hood. if you can park a chevy next to your Ford maybe I can get over it and do it to :)
I'm looking into buying one of these, but the power has me pumping the brakes. I'm now leaning towards the f450 platinum. Having an additional almost 300 lb ft of torque makes a major difference.
These trucks are governed at 75 mph. The chassis cab ford and dodge along with the GM / International trucks are all derated. I haven't paid any attention to the ford 450 pickup truck as far as power but I'd imagine it's like a 250 or 350 pickup truck. If you are wanting something to preform like a 1 ton this truck would not suit your needs.
@@chrisward405 yep, I have an f550 right now and the detuned 6.7 is agonizing when loaded. The turbo lag is ridiculous. It's too bad all these medium duty trucks are so limited on power.
Agreed. I can say for a medium duty truck I really like my Chevy. It does everything I need it to do weather I'm hauling my equipment around, making gravel deliveries, or using it as a tow rig on weekend getaways.
I want one of those for the looks i dont care about ride quality im used to that im a truck driver and i have a 98 Chevy 2500 and it's stiff as hell and a 04 lifted F-150 with Big tires and it rides like a tank to.. im alright with one of those 5500-6500 Chevy as is no Air ride bucrap just as is i want one of those bad to put a pickup truck bed on it and make just make bidass pickup truck out of if 👍
I have one of these for beekeeping and the biggest hindrance to ride quality on the truck is that the rear leaf springs have a half spring for locating the axle and the rest of the pack "floats" in a box on the frame with no bushings. If you pause @15:11 you can see the front locating spring under the box the load bearing springs "float" in. Edit: Also DEF is the devil, the truck has had to go to the shop 3x for manual regen and recently got out after dropping a piston when loaded to roughly 30k GCW.
@@theonly9 good deal. How was your experience with warranty? Did they take care of the issue in a timely manner? The reason I ask is ford and dodge take up to several months with engine warranty. Just curious on GM
@@chrisward405 they could have taken care of it faster, however it happened at the end of our season so there was no rush on our end to get it back. The biggest issue was it being a medium duty truck, GM had to get it shipped out to dealership that could service the motor...if we had been in a hurry that would have added extra time.
@@chrisward405 we also run a 2012 F450 and 2021 ram 5500. I would have to say the Ford hands down has the best turning radius but the least power and has had a million boost leaks/exhaust leaks over the years. The ram is a beast, great turning, great power, we work in hilly areas of Wisconsin and the exhaust break is easily the best going down grade and has the smoothest ride...but the Chevy is the most fun to drive, easier to see out of even though it turns like a battle ship we manage to still be able to turn around with a trailer on small farm roads and it just looks like a beast.
Sticker was 63k when I purchased the truck. The truck did not have a bed on it. I gave 55k for the truck new. Added the bed, boxes, and aluminum wheels for a total price of 63k

Lol I do. I've wanted a Kodiak/top kick truck for many years bit could never find a good deal on one so I bought a new one. It's for me personally. I'm planning for the future and this truck will play a big part in that
I wish GM would follow Ford and make a 450/4500 with regular bed in high trim levels. Ford was smart but prefer GMC&CHEVY.

That stink horn!!😂 Great truck sir.
Sweet looking rig
Badass truck. Is it just me or the silverado 3500 backwards on the passenger side door.
It's probably backwards in the video. Depending on how the camera is set up. It was my error lol
Horn would have not been a deal breaker as much as you like that truck ! Lol , great video !, I am picking up one next week.
I'd have made them change it before I signed papers lol
That's a nice truck
Question What makes this medium duty opposed to heavy duty ?
Was that bed expensive?
Bed, boxes, and installation was $6k
@@chrisward405 Thanks Chris
Medium duty is anything rated between 14,001-26,000 GVWR and would include any truck in the Class 4-6 range. Heavy duty is Class 7 and 8 and requires a CDL to drive unless it's an RV.
The ‘86 Toyota pickup we both drove was equipped with the same horn
Agreed
I'm looking for one to hotshot. Maybe not a 4x4 but it will be a 4 door. How does it pull down the interstate highway? Would you go with lower gears? What speed does it like to run loaded? I would like to be able to cruise 75/80. Thanks for your help and time.
Well my truck is governed at 75. It has 4.10 gears. A 373 gear would be better for cruising down the road. If you do decide to get one I'd suggest getting one with air ride. My truck likes 65 mph with the 4.10 and it hauls a gooseneck just fine
@@chrisward405 thanks!
No problem
I'm glad I live in Saskatchewan full emissions delete and straight pipe turbo back.
They go down the same production line
hi! how is your chevy holding up so far? any other problems or breakdowns? how many miles do you have now?
Hey Chris what horns did you order for the truck sir? I cannot stand the horn any longer and need to replace it with a proper horn for the size.
Haven't changed it out yet. I'll make a video on the horn swap soon
So did chevy even make this or did international harvester
Just had 32,000 on my 5500 and it pulled Just fine though eastern Kentucky
@@chrisward405 a 35,000 # load?
@@bladenrexroth2555 I would definitely use one of these trucks for hotshot. It's all about your preference.
Agreed. Need the right equipment for the job. And I'm right there with you on the horn lol
Hey my buddy put suspension seat in his and he loves it now.
Been thinking about that as well.
What was the manufacture of the seat
Let me know how he did that. I need this big time.
Awesome truck. What happened to your 7.3lt?
Still using it
Got me a Air Ride F450 Limited and I love it got my Horn I put a RS5T train horn on my 2018
Murphy's law never fails, I believe there is no traffic on any other days but day when you made the video.
I could hear you swearing at those bypassing cars every minute!
But your patience are strong enough to hold the anger. I would be like what in @#$% he'll all this @#$% cars started @#$% flying through 75mph on 45mph County road usually no any @#$% traffic!
Hahahahahahah agreed
Very nice truck
I burst out laughing when you honked that horn. Hahaha
Yeah I fuckin lost it when he blew it lol
Me too hahaha. Sounds like a vw beetle.
Looks good
Thank you
Your welcome
LOL that horn on a vehicle that size. Unreal.
I know right. Can't even hear it in the cab as your going down the road
First of all, is true that everybody has their own Cadillac. I'm with you, My soon to buy is a Chevrolet too. What's your Lady's name?
Def on the passenger side smh ....
obviously GM engineers have never been to a truck stop
Agreed. At least now GM finally put it in the correct spot
I said the same thing was going to order one but the def is making me think think twice. Would definitely be a pain in the a**
@@richardgreen7821 I agree.
I want one of those for the looks i dont care about ride quality im used to that im a truck driver and i have a 98 Chevy 2500 and it's stiff as hell and a 04 lifted F-150 with Big tires and it rides like a tank to.. im alright with one of those 5500-6500 Chevy as is no Air ride bucrap just as is i want one of those bad to put a pickup truck bed on it and make just make bidass pickup truck out of if 👍
If u don’t mind me asking….how much did u give for the truck and the bed?
55k on the truck and I believe the bed, boxes, and install was $5600. I bought the truck as the country was shutting down and got a great deal on it
I thought exhaust components where on on top of engine between the heads like the Ford 6.7 ?
They are
Just the turbo on a dmax.
Wow!! This is the first lemon I've heard so far. Did they cover everything under warranty??
@@chrisward405 yes warranty took care of it.
Guy: that damage was my fault
My dad : Oh heck that weld will never be the same. Son of a bit@#|n kids don’t take care of anything.
Hahahahahahah
Chris Ward what about a chair with a shock or bag system ..."?
I thought about it but probably do rear air ride first and see haw the ride is
How is the price of this truck compared to a luxury dually?
Sticker was 63k when I purchased the truck. The truck did not have a bed on it. I gave 55k for the truck new. Added the bed, boxes, and aluminum wheels for a total price of 63k
your back seat is like mine. Always folded up lol
I'll probably never use it
I think mines been folded down one time
Daughter home from college and we went to eat dinner it’s a 2019
Do you know what your MPGs are yet? and what was the MPG advertized at ? 12? highway
9.2 mpg running locally on back roads pulling a dump trailer loaded total 28,000 pounds
Very nice truck 👍
Is the insurance more expensive for red color or is the same ?
Not sure now. I do remember years ago red was a more expensive color to insure but it may have changed since then
You realy think that truck will last??
Hope so. Only time will tell as it is a new unit. It will be the last new vehicle I'll ever buy
Like your video big guy..
I'm pretty sure horn noise has some dumb regulation that's what I've heard anyways
Probably so. But a car horn is louder than this horn. Can't hear it in the cab of the truck with the windows up
Have you put the rear air ride on yet
Not yet. That will hopefully come next year
How much does the truck weigh built like this?
Haven't done a light weigh yet. I'm guessing 9,500 to 10,000 pounds

Where did you get the lug nut covers. And what size are they
Ebay 32mm
International frame, suspension, steering components. Gm cab , duramax engine, allison transmission
Correct
Duramax aka Isuzu?
How much can you tow with it
Last I checked you could spec these trucks out at the factory to 37k.
Good truck usually)))
Good looking truck
beautiful truck

What kind of fuel mileage, laden and unladen?
Probably talk about the fuel mileage in the next few videos
I have a 1967 Chevy C50 car hauler with a 283 2 barrel, np435 4 speed with 6.17 single speed rear 36" tall tires 16k gvw truck weighs roughly 10k 11k ish unloaded and I get 16mpg when I'm loaded with 4 or 5k lb car or truck I get 10-11 mpg
Very nice TRUCK...
Trucks like this make work a fun thing to do.
Absolutely
Air ride seats or brackets from semi truck would be cheaper
They need to put that solid front axle on the 2500/3500s
I agree
Im going to buy the big Freightliner truck
Get two bad boy horns from harbor freight thats what i got on my 1500 lol
Nice!

I thought you preferred old trucks?
Lol I do. I've wanted a Kodiak/top kick truck for many years bit could never find a good deal on one so I bought a new one. It's for me personally. I'm planning for the future and this truck will play a big part in that
