I have always been scared to hold dogs because I'm so afraid I'll accidentally hurt them. As someone who loves dogs- thank you for helping me learn!
Youre welcome! you can hold them.. just takes patience and practice and you have to be confident because they can sense if you are nervous.

I've only ever had a cat. Getting my first pup tomorrow. When I went to see him, he struggled in my arms because he knew I didn't know what I was doing then I dropped him about 2-3 inches from the ground when I went to set him down and he fumbled and fell. Anyways, realized dogs and cats are very different and I gotta learn how to hold this lil dude before he becomes a big dude

ThankYou for this great video. I’ve recently had to carry my senior Bichon across a busy road to get to the beach to walk. She stops and dawdles by the crossing due to age and failing eyesight 😕 but carrying her is much easier and quicker 😁💪 . ThankYou so much 🥰🐶

There are several ways to pick up a dog. I had a trainer tell me that this is NOT the way you should pick up a puppy or small dog because you can cause issues with their stomach by lifting them from their chest. Instead, you should grab them by their scruff, place your arm in between their back legs and support them that way. And if needed you can use the other arm to keep them from jumping out of your arms.

I'm always having trouble picking up the 14Kg Spain mix I adopted five years ago. He hates it and wants go get down ASAP. He doesn't bite, but he kicks around to get down. Now that he slowly becomes a senior, any tips on how I can help him get used to being picked up?

Hello. Our dog growls when being pick up. Is it bec of how we hold carry him? We pick her up on the back.
Probably cause she doesn't like being picked up
Can someone tell me if there's any negative affect of holding a medium-sized dog with the large(er) size hold (one arm in front of the front legs and one arm behind the hind legs)? For some reason i always default to that hold with any dog that comes above the knees.
I just started shadowing at a Vet Clinic and would rather learn here than possibly getting yelled at LOL
I have seen videoes of people picking up a medium size dog in that way, and I assume that is perfectly fine.
If you want to you can search the internet, it will probably say something about it there. Or you can ask a co-worker.

but what if they bite/threaten to bite me? my grandma used to have a maltese(?) and everytime i tried to pick it up, it kind of turns around and bite me??
Don't pick it up if it's uncomfortable, read their body language. Try to make it a positive experience with treats. My dog hated getting picked up too. He now comes to me and gestures that he wants to be carried around like a baby😅

TheReddi definitely give pain meds first .. sorry I’m so late to relying but I use Slings for dogs with back issues and gently have to move them.
