Lovely to hear from you 😊 Thanks for your lovely comment - I had a great little trip, I was really looking forward to a night by the coast and it didn’t disappoint 😉 Just magical to have the place to myself after a lovely cycle. I generally don´t watch your films in order and I eek them out so that I can savour them for longer times. They truly are a pure joy to watch and the music always beautiful and suits the atmosphere. Thank you Miriam.
    I have just changed my bike to a Danish brand Velorbis, it is an easy to get onto bike and it´s design harks back to the old shop delivery bikes, nice high up handlebars, low seating and small front wheel larger back wheel easy to get on to single speed with coaster rear brake so about as simple as it gets.
    I am sixty at the end of the year and the curse of the Donald's has finely hit me and forced me into early retirement, Osteo and Rheumatoid arthritis of the spine and shoulders, it is hard to walk these days though I do make myself and so this type of bike with the wonderful brooks saddle which my friends are always surprised to hear is very very comfortable is ideal as it makes me peddle at a regular cadence and when the hill is too steep I simple walk with the support of the handlebars up the hill.
    I am fortunate to live within minutes of the Danube Cycle Path which runs from the Black Sea to Germany. I am about a quarter of the way on the Vienna to Tulln section which is beautiful. gentle gradients and well tarmacked it is a joy to ride and good exercise.
    I count myself lucky that for me this is late onset so now I am blessed with the memories of the various pilgrim trails in Europe once walked and mountains climbed in my years in Canada and other wild places from desert to prairie and even a brief stint with the British Antarctic Survey at the South Pole walked and cycled, those memories are forever. Nature is our true home, our North Star, our calm that weathers any storm .
    Watching your videos is a balm, thank you.
    Ian.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Ian for your lovely message! I've just checked out your new bike brand so I can see the appeal...wonderful that you've found a bike that is working for you right now and that you're still able to access your true home despite the discomfort. It sounds like you've had so many great adventures and memories to date and it seems you're still thankfully creating memories with what you're able to do. I can only imagine what it must be like to not do as you once did but you sound pretty accepting of how things are for you at the moment with the Donald's curse. You describe your relationship with nature very beautifully, I still struggle to do so. My nights of solitude bring me so much contentment - I'm not sure that's the right word...its a sense that I'm doing what I'm meant to be doing, which is not very much, just being outside and immersed in the power of nature. Its fab to hear you get some enjoyment from watching these videos, I continuously struggle with the whys of it all...as you can imagine - having a camera and capturing some shots is very different from being there with no camera. I've spent so many nights out in the wild with no camera in recent months that I now feel excited to bring the camera along for a trip this weekend. I can now look forward to the fun that comes with playing with a camera and editing but I also know well the price I pay for bringing the camera. I will still most likely enjoy the trip immensely, but my head will be active rather than fully immersed in all that is around me. There is a payoff with creating a video but also a price and I'm still finding my way with it. So your message was timely as I plan to head to Donegal this weekend with the camera and do a big hike and try capture some views and experiences along the way...I've chosen the music already which I tend to do as I find it nice feeling a certain mood going into the trip with the camera! lets see what its like...no doubt I'll go through my familiar cycle afterwards of...what am I doing 😉 Take good care and enjoy that Brooks saddle!

      @@MiriamKennedy thank you as well for your lovely message MIriam.
      You are a gifted story teller, it shows in your videos, your words interlaced with your camera and drone work unfold a rich tapestry of experiences but I also understand the need to spend more time just one on one with nature so I think you are striking a lovely balance between the story teller you and the seeker of beauty you. Not doing very much means you are doing everything in the moment to reach the connection between nature outside and the nature within you.
      It is only in those moments where the true understanding of the life we came here to live is really like compared to the life we have had to construct in the world society creates. to strike a balance is the way to go, very much like creating the odd video but saving the majority just for you, I think that's the best balance.
      The more you save for yourself and no one else means that you create far more in terms of depth for the times you do want to share.
      People get it wrong with social media, they feel they have to constantly create and become obsessed with figures and views.
      The way you create does not pander to that and is all the better for it. I can´t speak for everyone else that watches but the spaces between gives me the chance to look forward even more to the next episode and a chance to look once again at older episodes. I think you strike the perfect balance, you are creating for yourself rather than for the audience which is why your videos are so authentic and deep. thank you once again Miriam. All the best from Austria!

    While it sucks that some disused railways are being turned into greenways when the towns on it could probably do with a rail connection (looking at you Youghal and New Ross), it at least they preserve the alignment and some of the railway heritage. It is cool that this line is also now a heritage railway though because that means the railway isn’t completely gone, even if it’s smaller than the original line.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi Joshua - I agree that a railway connection adds so much to an area and such a shame when it’s lost. To cycle this route was a very pleasant experience but does little for those that would prefer a working railway for sure.

      @@MiriamKennedy Thank you for your reply. A few questions about your beautiful Brompton. It appears to be the sought after Black Edition. Is it the H6L with 6 gears? They are really such a unique and innovative machine.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Denis - mine isn't the Black Edition, the colour of the frame possibly threw you off, the colour of mine is Raw Lacquer but the post etc is silver. I use S handlebars and mine has 3 gears...totally sufficient for me. I'm not trying to get anywhere too quickly and I love the simplicity of it 😉 I've no plans to do a video covering a review of the bike - I'm a big fan but I'm not a very experienced cyclist so I wouldn't be imparting any great insight to help inform peoples decisions. Why did I buy one? I got my first Brompton about 15 years ago. I occasionally spotted one in the city I live and I always thought they were a cool looking bike - purely aesthetics. At the time I lived in an apartment and a fold up bike really appealed to me to be able to fold it and store it away in a cupboard/closet. I also liked the ability to drive part of my commute to work with my bike in the car and then park the car in free parking locations and take the bike the rest of the way. I lusted after a Brompton for about 2 years before I eventually took the leap and went for it! I had never cycled one, I knew no one who had one but I thought they were a fab looking bike. I trained as an engineer and the fold of the Brompton always impressed me...those little details. I had to order my bike and go through the process of trying to decide what handlebars etc - great if you can try different types out to see what type build you want. I'm very happy with mine, I've no regrets. My first Brompton was stolen from my car at the start of Covid - I was just terribly unlucky, it was in the car and couldn't be seen but an opportunistic thief struck gold! All that I changed on this new one was the colour - however, I preferred my sage green (not on the latest colour palette when I was buying again). Hopefully that helps!! If there are any other things that you'd like to ask me about it, go ahead! The Brompton is my only bike...it does everything for me!! I still love it 😎

      @@MiriamKennedy Once again thank you very much for taking the time to write and answer my questions. So sorry to hear you got one of your bikes stolen from your car. In one of your videos I remember you folded your bike up and stowed it in the weeds in hopes that no one would find it. I worried that you would come back to no bike in the weeds. Happily that was not the case. I really appreciate you getting back to me and hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Happy travels!

    Looks like spring in Ireland! Still time for one more winter camping trip here in Canada before the bicycle trips start. Your video has helped me start my first trip plan, funny you wild camp and you’d think I would too, being in Canada, but nope. Cheers from the new world :)

      Oohhhhh - good luck with your trip plan, I hope you enjoy it! Fingers crossed we get some more flavours of Spring in the coming weeks, we’ve had lots of rain here in Ireland over the last week…it’s definitely turning for us though. I wasn’t too sure if you meant that you were planning to camp for your upcoming trip, hope you are - it’s always the highlight for me!! 🤗

      Ah thanks Niall - the drone footage definitely helped spice it up a bit, I think it would of been a bit boring without it 🙃 Great little trip and the highlight of course was the camp by the sea - bliss! Carrying the gear on the Brompton is far easier than on your back I can assure you 😊

    Another great video Miriam, I've loved watching it! Looking forward very much to returning to the Emerald Isle with 'Minnie the Mixte' in mid May...hopefully for a month! 🤞. It surprised me how difficult it often was finding a wild camping spot in Ireland though...and I sometimes ended up in very unconventional places!. Mind you I had a rigid policy of always trying to find a spot within a mile of a village, with a pub, for a few pints at night and somewhere to charge my phone! 😂. In fact I plonked the tent on a grass verge, on a lane outside Roscommon one night...only to find I was just 100m from a Garda policeman's house! 🙄🤣. Actually he was very understanding though (after a few white lies from me! 😀) and offered me a shower and brekkie at his place(I politely refused!). Enjoy your trips Miriam and may the wind always be at your back... 🙂G

      Thanks Graeme!! Yes, finding a place to camp in these somewhat populated areas makes for an added adventure 😎 Great you met a friendly policeman who didn't make your trip any more difficult. Over the past 6 years or so of wild camping I've been moved on once. I was camping on a mountain with a very lightweight tent which wasn't able for the wind on the summit so I came to lower ground and camped in a woods which unfortunately was private property and I was spotted. They asked me to leave and there was no way they would change their mind...ooopppppssss! Always a little adventure (though a little stressful) finding a spot on lower ground in a populated area but hopefully I wont gather too many stories of being moved on! 😊 Happy planning for your trip!!

      @@MiriamKennedy ha, ha! 😂. Yeh when the Garda policeman asked me what I was doing I said 'wild camping...but I'm not sure what the law was in Ireland!' 😚🙄(white lie N0.1...I knew DAMN well it was illegal! 😂). Then I said 'police in England turn a blind eye, if you clear up after you and aren't noisy!' (white lie N0. 2...but they are usually OK, it's down to the individual copper really! 🤷‍♂️). He nodded and left me there for 2 nights as the weather was awful, but called in each morning to see if I needed anything! 😀. Then I put my tent up on a roundabout, next to a motorway at Gort...and behind a bush, whilst on the way to Doolin and the cliffs of Moher! 😂. Wild camping was never dull in Ireland.. 🙂 🇮🇪

      @@MiriamKennedy 🤣yeh! About a mile from the centre of Gort! VERY large grassy roundabout, that went down into a hollow, where there were some bushes! 😀. Couldn't find anywhere else, it was getting late... and I was tired! Put my tent up, then rode down into Gort, found a pub and stayed in there for the evening! 😂 😋. I often did that in Ireland, without problem 🤷‍♂️. Just took my phone, wallet and bike...and left everything else! I wouldn't do the same in Blackpool that's for sure! Lol!

    Such a lovely part of Ireland Miriam along an easy gradient, dedicated cycle route. Ballinacourty Beach looked an ideal wild camp. I am investigating touring along such routes in Ireland to explore my Irish roots!!! Namely, Longford in County Longford (paternal), and Kildorrery in County Cork (maternal). Is it easy to travel by long distance buses with a Brompton? Do Bus Éireann have any particular rules for this?

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Michael - it's no problem to put a Brompton into the luggage compartments of the Bus Éireann buses and also the trains (Irish Rail) have a few bike spots that you can book in advance so you can take any bike on the train also. There is no extra cost for this either. It is so easy to travel with the Brompton! I haven't had any problems yet on trains or buses and there are no particular rules. For some private buses I just need to make sure its a large bus and that they'll have a decent luggage compartment to take it, i.e. that it's not a mini bus - most will accommodate the bike anyway as its like a heavy bag! Sounds like a great trip for you to be planning! I had to look at a map to see where Kildorrery is in Cork - you'll have a great time!! 🙂

    Pleasant and inspiring video :)
    What bags do you use for your setup?

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 роки тому

      Thanks Tyler - I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I use two official Brompton bags, the rear bag is the Brompton racksack and the front bag is the Brompton Metro bag. These bags are expensive unfortunately - I owned the rear one initially for transporting things to work and when I toured I attached a very light bag to the front and a little while later I bought the front Brompton bag too. This setup works for me. The bags aren’t that big but when I attach my tent and sleeping bag to the outside of the rear bag with straps it works perfectly! It’s annoying that official Brompton gear is so expensive but I decided to go this method with bags in the end. Hope that helps!

      Hi Tony - I'm a big Brompton fan so I'm very biased on that question!! I love mine...this is my second Brompton, my first I had for almost 10 years and it was stolen at the start of Covid from the boot of my car (it couldn't be seen). I was devastated, I hadn't realised how attached I could get to some metal! I had so much pleasure with it for years - after a few weeks when I realised I wasn't going to get it back, I bought another one. I don't own any other bike and this one meets my needs. I love the fact that I can put it in the boot of the car and park in free parking places and then take my bike everywhere. To be able to go on adventures such as this by using public transport is such a thrill too! So...I would happily recommend!! I hope you go for it 🤞 Thanks for watching the video!!

Truth is the tent is the highlight for me - I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea though 🤷‍♀️
