OK. Great review for the details. I have a little over 1000hrs in these IRL. I was really looking forward to it. Some things have been done really well. Some important things have been overlooked or not modeled accurately.
I did contact the developers and offer to input on the flight model. No response. I am hoping that it will be updated in the future. Still keen to help! (ORBX? You there?)
What it does well?
The presentation of the exterior and the interior is stunning. In VR I’m constantly reaching for things that I remember, only to find that I am in VR. Awesome. Love it.
STOL? Mixed bag. The actual performance is pretty good. I can happily land, stop and take off in about 1100’ at Queenstown.
However, the approach attitude with 40 flap is WAY off. The nose should be about ‘seven fingers’ lower - at least!!
Another positive point; the ‘feel’ on finals is bang on. The slow response to full aileron input is accurate. I was curious as to whether they could capture this, and they did.
It NEEDS a stick shaker (stall indication)
Cruise power and speeds are pretty good actually.
Take-off? Introduce backstick at about 40kts. Climb out at 70 with 15flap.
I still have the original checklist and manual. Not stealing any thunder here because I have tremendous respect for this channel. (I suspect a former CFS chappy?) I will provide a vid or two on this bird. I owe her. She taught me a lot. Some of the best flying I ever had!
Fun watching this vid. I flew my Captain Upgrade flight from Rotorua to Queenstown return, in a day. Lunch in Queenstown (home town). Crap weather on return. All airfields closed, two ship in combat trail - crazy day and very long!
No pressurization. No auto-pilot. Learn how to trim 😂. We flew from Amberly (Brisabane) to NZ via Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands for Exercise Shorthaul in NZ with the Andover crews of the RNZAF.
The Caribou is the ultimate, heavier STOL aircraft. I really do hope that it gets the attention it deserves in tweaking the flight model.
Overall
Looks great. I can get the right performance, for landing and take-off. Interior sounds are accurate for a helmet wearer. External sounds are accurate.
Attitude on final, especially for flap 40, nowhere near accurate. Should be a LOT more nose low.
Thanks ITB - accurate reviews always.
Wow man thanks for the input ! Hope devs listen to you or perhaps get some modders to tag along
I'd love to fly one some day, its always been an aircraft of big interest to me, shame that i'll be stuck on an easa cpl when i complete my flight training.
Great input from a RL pilot in this plane! I hope the developer reaches out to you. We all want the most REALISTIC representation as is possible.
Maybe we can edit the addon ourselves ?
Not a crazy idea; but they have put so much effort into it already it would be nice if they were on board with some adjustments too?
I was looking forward to getting this because I remember nosing around in one on the ground in Quito, Ecuador back in the 1970s. This plane was used to haul oil equipment into jungle airstrips in the Oriente region back when they were starting to drill. Once the wells started producing, the small outlying well strips were serviced by Pilatus Porters dubbed “Machacas”, which are beetles with grotesquely long noses, just like the Porter. The Caribou was called “Ballena”, or whale. It was eventually sold on and replaced by a Fokker F-27 that ran regular shift-change runs between Quito and the eventually-paved airstrip at Lago Agrio, which was the main aggregation point for the oil before it was pumped over the Andes to Esmeraldas, on the Pacific coast. Flying in Ecuador was particularly hazardous back then. The aforementioned Fokker F-27, HC-AYM, on which I learned to fly, flew right into a cloud-bound mountainside just over the Colombian border a few years after I left Ecuador, killing all aboard, due to a navigation error. There were no navigation aids, you flew by dead-reckoning and by hoping that the jungle river you were looking at was indeed the one you were expecting.
For what I assume was an off-the-cuff comment, that was an extremely engaging and interesting story! I would love to hear some stories from your experience - some Bush Trips based on your time there might be really fun. Also - you learned to fly on an F-27??
Thanks very much for sharing the stories Thomas, I completely agree with Cody, very interesting indeed! It sounds like quite an adventure and I'm sure that sort of flying would put some hairs on your chest! Sorry to hear about HC-AYM / her crew though.
I hope you have some fun with the Caribou - it seems like the perfect sort of aircraft for recreating those sorts of flights / adventures in the sim.
Cheers! Much appreciated and all the best : )
@@Truffles_Wilson Yes. I was an oil brat; my dad worked for Gulf Oil. My first hand at the controls was in a King Air actually, in Venezuela, but that was just having the pilot turn off the autopilot and let me try to keep the thing level, but it was enough to give me the bug for the rest of my life.
However, the F-27 was when I was a little older and we were posted to Quito. I never told my dad at the time that used to ride my bike down to the airport (in those days, the main Marescal Sucre airport was in the valley right in town- it was relocated after I had left). I would prop my bike up against a hangar and bum rides from some of the pilots. The most obliging were actually the crew from HC-AYM, and we would fly down to Lago Agrio and back. They never let me land, but I did do takeoffs and perform the checklists quite a number of times; enough to solo, I’d say. I think I was about 12 at the time. In those days, regulations about who could sit in the cockpit, let alone fly, were pretty non-existent, though I never spoke about it until much later because the pilots could have been in trouble. The machacas were great fun too, flying down low along rivers and landing in very tight spots.
After Ecuador, we were posted to Kinshasa, Zaïre (Congo). Back in Those days we had Vietnam vets flying the company chopper from a coastal village called Moanda out to a stationary Shell Oil floating storage tanker in the Congo River mouth. Larger tankers would go along the Cabinda, Angola/Zaire coasts and collect their stores, thereby avoiding the raging Angolan civil war onshore.
Even more interesting were the number of Free-Cuban Pilots in Zaïre, who flew, not only for the oil company, but were engaged in transporting arms into Angola in support of the FNLA, who were funded by the CIA and Zaïrois oil revenues. They had a beat up DC-3, owned by a suspicious third-party company Called Kalicak, the Zaïrois version of Air America. Never got to pilot the DC-3, or go into Angola, just a passenger on two domestic flights, but did get to fly the Jet Ranger in flight and in hover, and learned enough to be dangerous. The chopper was operated by Petroleum Helicopters who had contracts worldwide to service oil rigs and was one of the nicest jobs a chopper pilot could possibly dream up.
The first plane I actually fully piloted (takeoff/landing, etc) was a Queen Air, operated by a Cuban pilot between N’dolo (Kinshasa) and Moanda. I was about 14 at the time. Can’t remember if that plane was Kalicak too. It was so long ago now.
I could write a novel alone just about what I saw on the tarmac at N’dolo. It was something like a combination of a Mike Hoare mercenary biography and the Star Wars bar scene. The varieties of aircraft there had long pedigrees and stories to tell.
@@obriets - absolutely wild. The past is another country. They did things differently there. You should write this all down so it's not lost - sounds like you had one helluva boyhood.
@@philipford6183 I indeed did. My life is sooo boring now by comparison.
"When the plane has come to a stop please recover your carry-on baggage, eyeballs, and any other items or body parts that might have become separated as a result of our pilot testing the brakes."
Ha! The passengers won't even have to disembark the plane, they'll all have been ejected through the windshield most likely! XD
Yep, this one’s getting got.
Haha! I do hope you're enjoying it Andy! Happy flying ; )
The best MSFS aircraft reviews in the internet are yours! Thank you so much!
I completely agree. My goto Guru.
Haha, thanks Rahman!
Thank you very much indeed Guilherme, very kind of you to say! I certainly try my best and it's my absolute pleasure to do so ; )
Cheers! Much appreciated and all the best to you : )
Growing up in Australia during the 80's and living near a Military Base. I fondly remember watching and hearing the RAAF conduct STOL training. Ever since then there has always been a place in my heart for the DHC-4 Caribou since those days. Even as much as joining the Air Cadets to get closer to these 'flying gravel trucks', and getting to fly in them a number of times.
After getting into flight simming with FS2000, I'd always sought out to have a 'Bou to fly around in the sim. Various add-ons both free and payware were tested and tried. Many lacked in one way or another. Quite often it was in the sounds that were a disappointment.
When they announced the DHC-4 to MSFS, I was incredibly hyped. I could get to fly my favourite aircraft in the current generation sim. Now with the sounds, and flight experience, I remember from my youth.
My inner self from over 30 years ago is grinning from ear to ear
Same , great memories of the bird in the sky , my only critique with the sim was the sound of the Radials, , the real thing is hauntingly unmistakable when you hear it approaching or throttling up on take off .
One of our instructors in pilot training had done a tour in Vietnam in the "Boo". Most of his work was flying crates of pigs and chickens into regrettable dirt strips. They would fly steep approaches to minimize exposure to small arms fire, which would be something interesting to try in the sim. He said they would cruise at about 110 knots which I imagine would make the DME unreadable since the numbers would be just a blur. And no, there wasn't an autopilot, although it would be nice to have one in the sim, at least as an option.
Thanks for sharing the story Jay! Pigs and chickens might not be quite as glamorous as flying an F-4 off the deck of a carrier hehe, but I'd imagine it was very interesting / challenging flying nevertheless!
Certainly it would be great fun to try that sort of stuff in the sim and the Asobo DHC-4 definitely has no issues with steep approaches haha. I figured that the lack of autopilot was true to life, but I think it would be nice to have the option in the sim (as you say).
Cheers again! Much appreciated and all the best : )
I was on the fence about buying the Caribou but thought it worth a punt.
It is now my favourite plane - Just a joy to fly around. Like bush flying in a C-130 Hercules 😊
Ah well I’m really glad you’re enjoying it HR! I was kind of in the same boat as yourself haha; the DHC-4 turned out to be a cracker though!
Happy flying and all the best : )
Sir, thank you for what you do. I subscribe to very few channels, yours being one. I’ve learned a great deal from your videos over the last year, as you routinely make each one interesting. Your knowledge of aviation is astounding. I fast-forward through many other’s videos, but yours don’t have any boring parts to skip. Your enthusiasm and the manner in which you present information is fair and unbiased, and I’ve made a few add-on aircraft purchases based on your assessments; my favorite being the C414AW. Also, the amount of these high quality videos you make weekly is as well most impressive. My first MSFS version was 2.0 back in 1984 on my Radio Shack Tandy TRS-80. Skip ahead almost four decades and I’m currently down a $14K rabbit hole with my DOF H-3 based sim. For a flight sim enthusiast, it’s truly a great time to be alive. I too am partial to steam gauge twin props and this DHC-4 is my next purchase. Again, much obliged for all you do here…although y’all Brits do talk kinda funny - yeehaw! Take care, brother, and god bless.
Hello Gregg,
Thank you very much indeed for the kind words! It tends to sound a bit cliche to say, but such comments are truly appreciated and act as a great motivator also. It’s always brilliant to hear that someone is enjoying the content, better still when someone feels they’re getting some value / pointers out of the videos.
It sounds like you beat me to it as far as simming goes, I started out in the heady days of FS95 haha. Anyway, it’s brilliant to see an experienced simmer such as yourself, here on the channel. I’m actually in the process of setting up a new sim rig for myself at the moment; alas I didn’t quite have the space for a motion platform, so I must say that I’m very jealous! ; )
We definitely seem to be living through another golden age in flight simulation. It’s great to see and it’s a pleasure that I get to share it with all of you as well!
The DHC-4 is a cracker for the price - I do hope you’re enjoying it! In the Kings best English; “have a jolly good flight old bean and wishing you all the best sir” : )
Superb review as always. Do love DHC designs, having been in a Chipmunk, Beaver, Otter, Twin Otter, Dash 7 and 8. Love the use of the old civil reg which is infact a Harvard. But seriously another suberb watch. Look forward to the next one!
Thanks very much James, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Indeed, De Havilland have so many classic aircraft designs (though sadly I haven't flown in nearly as many of them as yourself haha!); the Caribou might not be the prettiest of those designs, but it's certainly great fun and something unique for the sim!
Many thanks once again and all the best! : )
I ran the updates last night and noticed this had appeared. Great to see a review of it so quickly, I love quirky stuff like the Caribou
Just did a fight from auckland to queenstown, and it looked stunning the whole way. Got to be one of the best World updates so far. Hopefully future world updates will be like this one and not like others......canada.
yah shame what they did to Canada since we are neighburs to msn and they have some offices where I live
Lovely stuff Ehawk! Yes, the NZ update has to be one of the best so far. It's quite surprising how variable the updates have been thus far, but I suppose Asobo can only work with the data / imagery that they have available to them. . .
Happy flying and all the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Probably makes a difference how much access the NZ government gave to Asobo for the update... it's exceptional. Definitely one of my favourite places to fly in the sim now. Well, already was. But it's better now. And NZA Simulations did an amazing job with my local airport (Christchurch International)
Ahh, that would certainly help SB, yes. I wish more countries would do the same then haha! Completely agree; NZ was always special, but now it’s even more so ; )
That’s a shame about NZA’s Christchurch. I was actually planning on featuring Christchurch in the video - they must have released it right after I finished recording (I didn’t see it available at the time) ha XD
Happy flying and all the best! : )
Excellent Detailed Analysis as always, Super!!
Thank you very much sir, I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed the video! Much appreciated and all the best to you : )
That was great. You flew over all the places I lived in Queenstown on the final approach. The terrain is so up to date it's crazy.
Thanks very much RR, really glad you enjoyed it!
Lucky you, looks like a stunning part of the world to live in (in fact during the approach, I was thinking to myself; “wow, imagine living here?? haha).
Cheers and all the best : )
As usual, one of the best reviewer ... good job
Thanks very much AgQc, very kind of you to say! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Much appreciated and all the best to you! : )
A great and fantastic presentation. The music mid way in video was very nice indeed. WU 12 has been very dear to my heart as my home country and brings home the essence of what NZ is all about. Loving the DHC-4. Thanks so much, your experienced insights on how to operate it was so helpful. Purchasing decisions are heavily based on your reviews. Many thanks, Cheers.
Thank you very much indeed for the kind words Anthony, much appreciated!
I’m glad you’re enjoying WU12 and the DHC-4; both have been superb and it’s been brilliant to see NZ get the love it deserves (lucky you, it must be a stunning place to live!).
I’m really happy that the video proved to be of use! My pleasure and all the best to you : )
One of my all time favourites, many great memories as a kid watching them touch and go ...awesome sim !
Ah well I’m glad the video brought back a few nice memories then Damir! Cheers and all the best : )
External walk around with audible footsteps! Next level 😁
Haha, thanks very much Paul! I try my best ; )
Cheers!
Another great review, very informative as always! You've convinced me to buy this aircraft 👍
Thank you very much David, I'm glad you found the video useful! I hope you're happy with your purchase and that you have been having some fun with the Caribou : )
Happy flying and all the best!
I am always blown away by the high production quality of your videos. Super informative and super, SUPER entertaining! If the whole "real world pilot" thing doesn't pan out for you, you should definitely consider a career in Hollywood.
Thank you for making these. They are a ton of fun to watch.
Thank you very much indeed for the kind words Tony, it's always a pleasure to hear that someone is enjoying the content!
Haha, I was quite surprised that I haven't had an invite to the Oscars just yet, perhaps the letter is still in the mail. . . XD
My pleasure on the video! Much appreciated and all the best : )
I remember seeing an RAAF Caribou perform a tactical STOL landing demonstration at an air show and it stopped in what seemed like almost it's own length. Think I will be getting this add-on.
One of your very best reviews! 🙂👍 I loved the walk around at the beginning. So well done. I felt like I was wearing a VR headset. I'm glad the Caribou has turned out so well. Well done ORBX. I hope they add some finishing touches to it in future. This video was yet another example why 'Into the Blue Simulations' is the best MSFS review UA-cam channel. I'll give this review a 9.9/10. I'm only taking off 0.1 as you didn't pick the lovely green camo 1 scheme. 😂
Thanks very much Incar!
I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and I must say that I’m inclined to agree haha (I really enjoyed the flight / aircraft and I think that probably came across in the video ; )
I’ll take 9.9, but if I’d chosen the Camo scheme, you wouldn’t have been able to see the aircraft as it blended into the background! : P
Thanks very much once again - very much appreciated. All the best!
That was a brilliant review, many thanks. RAAF 38SQN were flying these in the early 80s when I was based at Richmond and I got to spend a fair bit of time going for 'jollies' in this aircraft. Or as ground crew at the Drop Zone during LAPES, parachute and airdrop training. Spent a fair bit of time last night practicing some touch and goes at Richmond (I really hope somebody creates a download for that airfield). Your vid has, as always, introduced a lot more of the functionality and correct procedures so thanks for that. I believe I will be spending a lot of time flying this old bird (I mean venerable aircraft) in the sim. Best wishes.
Thanks very much Terry! I'm really happy you enjoyed the flight, I certainly had a lot of fun with the DHC-4 myself.
Sounds like it'll be well worth picking up this "venerable aircraft" then - re-live some old memories. I'm glad the video was of use (though I certainly can't claim to be an expert with regards to the Caribou haha) and that you're enjoying the addon!
Happy flying and all the best : )
A really nice review. You covered just about everything, regarding the plane & the world update.
Thanks very much B3! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and broadly felt it hit the mark. Thanks very much for watching and all the best! : )
Gorgeous aircraft, gorgeous video! Love your instruction
Thank you very much once again MajorTom, very much appreciated! The Caribou is indeed a lovely addon for the sim and I’m really glad you enjoyed the flight : )
Happy flying and all the best!
Another great video/review, both of the Caribou & WU12. It's great that you take us along to places with such beautiful scenery. I kept looking for Hobbits but couldn't see any ... which is what Hobbits do! Even though the Caribou isn't my cup of tea, I enjoyed the run-through & was quite impressed with the quality of the plane but, my goodness, there are just so many dials, buttons & switches in these old planes. As always, thanks for your hard work in putting these videos together & making them so enjoyable.
Thanks very much once again AS! I try my best to make the flights interesting in their own right; for me, it’s not the review, but the flight itself that I enjoy (so I try and pick interesting locations for my own sake as much as anything haha).
I’m sure the Caribou won’t be to everyone’s tastes, indeed I didn’t think it would be to my own ha, but it’s certainly something a little bit different in the sim and therefore I think the product offers a lot of value - cheers Asobo / Orbx!
Thanks for the kind words and indeed the continued support. Much appreciated and all the best : )
I was hoping for a little struggle on engine start like you said. I think that would give a real sense of reality to the startup procedure. I remember my initial pilot training in a Piper Tomahawk, startup shook the whole place. lol
cheers for a great review Capt!
Cheers Cade, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Haha, indeed; the first light aircraft I ever flew in was a Grob Tutor and having enjoyed flight sims up until then, I was completely unprepared for the sheer cacophony of noise and vibration when the engine fired up - all 115hp of it XD
Certainly I was hoping for a more laboured start; simplistic starts seems to be par for the course in the sim, but you really don’t want to see that on a big old radial. . .
Thanks again and all the best! : )
i love this plane! very glad picked it up. at the $15 US price point, there is a ton of value here. excellent production as usual, ItB.
Likewise Marshie; I’ve been having brilliant fun with the Caribou thus far (it’s just a shame that I don’t have more time to spend with it haha)!
Really happy to hear that you enjoyed the video once again and indeed that you’re enjoying the DHC-4 also.
Hope you’re having a great weekend! Cheers : )
I like how this Caribou looks and seems to fly. I'll be picking it up for sure. All we need now is a De Havilland Dash 7 and I'll have all the high-wing planes I need for flying in rugged terrain.
Bravo! Really enjoyable review not least because, if I'm not mistaken, this is your cheapest recommendation to date! 😀Now to watch the vid again to learn how to fly my new plane.
Haha! I'm glad the review was a winner on all fronts John! I guess at this sort of price, one only has to skip the naan bread, instead of cancelling the whole meal XD
I do hope you're having fun with the Caribou. Happy flying and all the best : )
Great stuff Cap.
Thanks very much R PM, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! : )
Btw, is your profile pic David Coulthard’s helmet? I used to be a big fan of DC / McLaren back in the day haha ; )
Stunning Scenery I must say.
Thanks for a good insight into the Bou, this aircraft is in my hangar, it's a good honest fun to fly aircraft. Love flying it over many parts of Asia I have visited, Sulawesi, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, where the Bou seems very much at home. Of course Papua being a real challenge, brings the best out of the Bou.
Many thanks for your fascinating and factual reviews.
Regards,
Phillip.
My absolute pleasure, Phillip, I’m really glad you found the video of interest!
It’s great to hear that you’ve been having some fun with the Caribou, it is indeed a cracking addon. If you enjoyed my vid, I’m sure you will enjoy this one also (it’s made by a real-world, ex RAAF Caribou Pilot) - very interesting: ua-cam.com/video/pS_REc-3AgQ/v-deo.htmlsi=CML6b5kiBW3EweMv
Thank you very much for the kind words. Happy flying and all the best : )
The Caribou is one of my favorites! I'll have to check it out!
Love this aircraft. Did about 70+ jumps out of them. P2V and F27 make up my top three favourites.
I was HOPING to see you feature this aircraft. THANK YOU!
Haha! My pleasure Ozzy! I hope you enjoyed the video and indeed the Caribou. Cheers and all the best : )
Bought this after watching your review, this aircraft is fun to fly for sure.
Ah well I’m very glad to hear that you’re enjoying the aircraft then Videotrexx! The Caribou is indeed jolly good fun and a top notch purchase given the price.
Happy flying and all the best! : )
My favorite plane in Xplane11 was the most unassuming plane, C-119 Flying Box Car. Love these old, heavy birds, multi prop, 10,000 instruments & switches
Brought back some memories! I was responsible for maintenance of a number of Moose in the Middle East in the 70s. Great aircraft
I’m glad the video brought back some good memories Peter! Cheers and all the best : )
Great opening shot!
Thanks very much Russ, glad you enjoyed it! : )
All the best!
A big, ungainly, vintage radial is always a winner with me, but I was somewhat perturbed to discover the lack of an autopilot. However, after a couple of flights and using a Loupedeck for trim inputs, I've started enjoying it. Very good for the price, and for any virtual airline it would complement the Asobo DC-3 and PMDG DC-6 nicely. Once again, a great video.
Thanks very much Paul, happy to hear that you enjoyed the video!
Haha indeed, the Caribou ticks a lot of boxes for me also. I was quite surprised by the lack of autopilot (I know it’s accurate, but even a basic ALT / HDG hold would have been nice for us simmers), but it hasn’t been dampening my enjoyment of the aircraft thus far - I just make sure I pick trips where I can stand to fly manually for the required flight time haha. Great to hear that you’re enjoying the aircraft also!
Happy flying and all the best : )
I really enjoy this aircraft, have many hours in FSX and FSEconomy in one and was stoked when we got one for MSFS 2020.
The Caribou is a superb offering D. Fras! If you liked the aircraft in FSX, I’m sure you’re having a blast with it in MSFS haha. Definitely a great option for FS Economy, Air Hauler etc.
Happy flying and all the best! : )
Dad flew the Caribou on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands during the early 1980's. RIP RG Evans.
Very nice video and review of an awesome Canadian aircraft flying in stellar NZ scenery. Was definitely a flash back to some great times in aviation, reminiscent of Air America Ops, just need a Helio Courier and a few Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcars lol. Well Done
Thanks very much indeed FAA, I’m really glad you enjoyed the flight! I’d take a C-119 any day of the week haha - another very cool aircraft!
Cheers again and all the best : )
great plane for the price. always great review. love to see the b-25 come to the sim.
Yes, I think so Sam. I don't know whether you picked the DHC-4 up but if so, I do hope you're having fun!
I'm glad you enjoyed the review! Thanks very much once again : )
P.S. A B-25 would indeed be great! ; )
Great aircraft and an awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much Dracollin, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! My pleasure and all the best : )
Thanks much again, I really like it 👍
You're most welcome CP! Yes, the DHC4 is somewhat of a triumph, by far one of the best "Local Legends" to date. Cheers and happy flying! : )
Thanks for the video. I thought I'd pick this up but some of the shortcomings have put me on the fence (including some I read on the MSFS forums). Think I'll see what fixes/improvements come. Great video as always and a fair appraisal. I often think it would be nice to have a few non-static camera shots during your intros and outros, just to show more of the aircraft details, but I appreciate that adds a little more complexity/time to your recording effort.
Cheers Martyn, my pleasure on the video (I’m glad you enjoyed it and felt it was fair)!
Truth be told, I’ve only just gotten around to setting up a gamepad for the drone cam (I’ve been meaning to do that for ages haha); without it, I was never very happy with the smoothness of any external panning etc. It does add a bit more work oftentimes, but I like the idea of including a little walkaround here and there.
Thanks for watching and all the best! : )
Excellent review as always, just sub'd and purchased this absolute beast, for the price it may not be perfect but it sure has potential
Thanks very much for the kind words and the sub, Mike! I’m really glad you enjoyed the review; the Caribou whilst not perfect, is indeed cracking good fun, especially given the price - happy flying!
Cheers and welcome aboard : )
Great airplane and a long-time favourite of mine - especially because of its airlift role in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War (both in US and Australian service, and 'civilian' operators like CASI and Air America). It really filled an important niche in very rough conditions.
It also seems like a fantastic plane for Air Hauler users - it's a great intermediate hauler that fits really well into most kinds of flying one would do with that add-on!
Indeed Oto, it's a great addon and I'm glad to hear that as a fan of the Caribou, you are enjoying it!
Funnily enough, I thought exactly the same regarding Air Hauler: I've long being toying with the idea of some sort of Air Hauler series on the channel and the Caribou would make for a brilliant option I reckon. It could be great fun to set up a base in NZ and fly into some of the more remote / beautiful locations!
Happy flying and all the best : )
There's that harrowing photograph of one cartwheeling through the air, after an artillery round severed its tail in Vietnam.
Urgh, poor chaps. . .
Nice review as always! I will definitely be picking up the Caribou. Nice flight into NZQN as well. I have been fortunate enough to have taken a business jet in there on a number of occasions. The scenery is stunning which also makes it a challenge (funny how the two always seem to go hand in hand) .u
Cheers Paul! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you’re enjoying the Caribou also.
Having watched videos of real-world flights going into Queenstown, it certainly looks absolutely stunning - lucky you! The sim gives one some sense of that, but I’m sure it’s not a patch on the real thing. As you say, the more fascinating an area is to fly in, the less ideally suited it tends to be towards aviation XD
Happy flying and all the best! : )
I remember the first msfs. This here is incredible
Damn, this thing is right up my alley.
Haha, you and me both Joni! Some big old radials and a tonne of steam gauges - what’s not to love?! ; )
The DHC-4 was one of my most flown aircraft add-ons in FSX
I do hope you’re enjoy the Caribou in MSFS then IndyJons! Happy flying and all the best : )
This aircraft was extremely HIGH on our Wall of Cool and whilst I'm kinda bummed we got beat to release (to be fair we hadn't started) but so glad to hear that it seems she got the attention she deserved.
Only you guys know what the market is like, but I know I'd happily buy a BR version.
Still an opening to do a combined DHC4/DHC5 package
Haha, well I’m kinda bummed to hear that also! Happily, Orbx made a pretty good go of it though and I’m glad you hadn’t already sunk a tonne of work in etc. Looking forward to seeing whatever trumped the Caribou for the top spot on the Wall of Cool! ; )
Cheers sir! : )
best youtube addons review. thank you very much!
Thank you very much for the kind words Lucas - much appreciated! My pleasure and all the best : )
The inside of the plane made the outside look stunning aircraft to buy. Great video
Jumping into the cockpit for the first time is worth the money alone. The aging job was fantastic. Do wish it had autopilot though.
I cant wait for asobo or orbx to work on ecuador my home country. So i can take this one for a trip there
Thanks very much Piloto, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
The cockpit of the Caribou is right up my alley and Orbx did a brilliant job with the aging / wear etc (as Thomas points out).
Happy flying and all the best! : )
The Caribou is amazing, and a worthy "local hero" but I REALLY wish they'd released a New Zealand aircraft with the New Zealand World Update. There are some aircraft that have enormous significance to New Zealand aviation, so it's a real shame they didn't do a Fletcher or Cresco or something.
Hopefully in the future? The Canada update didn't get a Canadian airplane, but now we've the Caribou. So there's definitely still a chance.
Yeah I've noticed that the local legends don't always match up with the country....???
Hi Mark,
Yes, it seems as though Asobo has officially given up with linking any "Local Legends" to their respective World Updates (and the link has often been a bit tenuous, even before the DHC-4 haha). As best I can tell, the Caribou has essentially no ties with NZ?
I just see the Local Legend series as an aside from the World Updates at this point (as you say, the Caribou is certainly worthy of being a local legend in general). On the plus side, since geography seems to have little to do with the series these days, we may yet see an NZ aircraft at a later date : )
Cheers and all the best!
Many thanks for yet another interesting and informative video. No autopilot and analog instruments suits me fine. I am surely gonna get this one. Whish some documentation will be available in the near future though.
My pleasure once again Stenne, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
A manual would certainly be nice, but fortunately there does at least seem to be quite a bit of real-world Caribou documentation kicking around online. Either way, if you’re into you’re old-school radials / steam gauges etc, I’m sure the lack of manual won’t dampen you’re enjoyment of this one too much ; )
Happy flying and and all the best! : )
Great the type of aircraft I love big and slow, ideal for the sim. I always check to see if you've reviewed the aircraft I want before I purchase, as I found you're judgement to be spot on. Now I just have to brush up on my Vor navigation skills that I haven't used for years ,so if you see Caribou that looks lost, it's me lol. Many thanks.Gary.
Hi Gary,
Well thanks very much, it’s always a joy to hear when someone is finding the content useful. My pleasure!
Haha. Well on the plus side, if you do get terribly lost, you can land the Caribou in just about any field you can find. VOR navigation in these old machines is always a nice challenge and great fun to boot!
Happy flying and all the best : )
I kind of wished that I had watched this video before I purchased the plane this morning. Nothing wrong with the aircraft, but I hadn't realized there was no autopilot. I immediately set out to do a roughly 250 mile FSEconomy flight and only to discover the lack of autopilot once airborne. I got to do a bit more hand flying than I wanted.
Haha, that is quite a bit of hand flying HMR, especially since the Caribou doesn't exactly go anywhere in a hurry! XD
I was quite surprised by the lack of autopilot also and it seems that many people have been put off by that fact. Hopefully Orbx / Asobo will take the feedback onboard and "retrofit" the DHC-4 with at least some basic automation.
Cheers, all the best! : )
Great video! I love ugly utility planes with way too many gauges.
Years ago I spent 2 weeks in New Zealand and it is probably one of the most beautiful places in the world. And on top of it all, Kiwis are lovely people with great senses of humor.
Hope you're well friend, keep up the great work!!
Thanks very much once again Bread, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
Haha, I love these sorts of aircraft as well and whilst I never much cared for the Caribou's aesthetic, I have to say that it's really been growing on me since flying the addon (I still don't like the tail section though haha)!
New Zealand certainly looks to be a beautiful part of the world - particularly the South island. Definitely somewere I plan on visiting properly at some point. From what I have seen, New Zealand basically looks like Scotland on steroids haha.
I'm keeping very well thank you, I hope you are also! Much appreciated and all the best : )
@Into the Blue Simulations you know I hadn't really noticed how funky the tail was until you mentioned it. I wonder what the main advantages/reasons for such a design choice.
Seems like De Havilland are committed to the ugly duckling aesthetics. Although I'm not sure how I feel about roof throttles. I know it's an old school arrangement, just seems kinda funky.
All the best friend! Fly safe and until the next one :)
Well, I presume the curve in the aft tail section, is to give better ground clearance for anything loading onto the ramp (many cargo aircraft have a similar design, but the Caribou’s curvature is just aesthetically unpleasant haha).
De Havilland tend to be “all or nothing” when it comes to their designs. They’ve created some of the most beautiful aircraft in aviation history; the Mosquito, Tiger Moth and Comet to make but a few. . . but then there is the Caribou XD
Cheers! : )
I only just picked this up late last night and flew it once. I was impressed, but very curious how you felt about it. Perfect timing!
Cheers FlyGuy! I’ve been having a cracking time with the Caribou, very happy to hear that you’ve been enjoying the aircraft also : )
All the best!
I’ll be downloading this. Seems ideal for hops between locations in The Alps.
I do hope you’ve been enjoying the Caribou then Mark! I had a cracking time with the aircraft though as ever, I have been unable to find the time to fly it since XD
Happy flying and all the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Same here, haven't flown it yet, been busy with the Antonov and then back in the DC-6 which I've not flown for months...
Never flown one of these but did enough time jammed in the back of one in the army.
Haha, were you expected to jump out of the back also Weaselman, or was the army kind enough to let you sit all the way through to destination? : P
All the best! : )
NZQT is one of my favourite airports in the sim, so I'm stoked to get home and try the update. Might be me, but the colours/textures look truer to life.
The Caribou would seem more of a Canadian aircraft to me, good as it is. It'd be great to see a Fletcher, with its mighty IO-720 motor, to show NZ aircraft some love.
Well, I hope you've been having some fun in NZ then Roland! I rather have to agree on the colour palette, though perhaps that just came down to the weather conditions on the day (I haven't had a chance to jump back into the sim yet).
The Caribou has essentially zero to do with NZ so far as I can tell haha, but I've just taken it to mean that Asobo has given up linking a "Local Legend" with a specific World Update (there were some pretty tenuous links even before).
Happy flying! : )
Tekapo is NZ highest elevation aerodrome at 2,496 ft. Just bought the Caribou, great plane at a great price.
Oh is that so, Brian, I didn’t actually realise that when I chose the location (with all of those mountains around NZ, I’m actually quite surprised that there’s nothing higher than 2,500ft). Very interesting though, thanks for the info.
I’m really glad you’ve been enjoying the Caribou, it’s certainly a cracking addon for the price!
Thanks again, happy flying and all the best : )
Love this, might have to get it! Caribou seems to have bit and pieces from a lot of their other aircraft; nose and nosewheel very like the Dove, main gear and wings reminiscent of the Dash 8! Can you try the wheelbarrow landing?
Hi Richard,
The Caribou is certainly a very nice pickup given the price (in my opinion at any rate), I’m sure you’d have some fun with it. The DHC-4 does look like a bit of a mish-mash of other DHC airframes haha (tere was a rather nice Dove available in P3D and I’m hoping we’ll see one for MSFS at some point also).
Someone else mentioned the wheelbarrow landing: I had no idea the Caribou could do one haha - I shall have to give it a go on my next flight!
Cheers and all the best : )
Excited to grab this after work! What is the addon for the atc chatter?
Hi Nick,
I do hope you are enjoying the Caribou then!
The ATC is real-world recordings (from LiveATC.net), which I’ve then edited into the video. There is actually an ATC chatter app available for MSFS though, if that’s the sort of thing you’re after : )
I hope that helps. Happy flying and all the best!
Very nice video. You can see why Queenstown is such a challenging airport to arrive at due to the terrain. I am sure that the airport is shut down at around 6pm due safety of landing at night, causing some concern with some international airlines, as Queenstown is a International airport. The aircraft is not my cup of tea, but I did find it a very pleasing model well rendered and a good addition to the FS world. Well flown to. Keep up the good work.
Thanks very much Shane, I’m really glad that you enjoyed the flight / aircraft (even if the Caribou isn’t your cup of tea). Queenstown, whilst beautiful, certainly looks like a challenging area in which to operate and makes for some very interesting flights within the sim (I recall seeing a great video of an ANZ 737-200, going in there with a visual approach).
I shall try my best to keep the videos coming. Cheers for the kind words and all the best! : )
Great review! How are you doing the walk around wirh foot-steps sound and all?
Thanks very much RC, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Most of what you saw during the video, was simply the use of the drone camera / TrackIR and then a few tricks during editing. FS Realistic does offer such an option also, albeit the functionality does have some drawbacks.
ua-cam.com/video/6k7ZA-AGA7M/v-deo.html
I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )
Fun fact .... the RNZAF never operated the Caribou its very much a RAAF and RCAF bird idk why its a local legend for the NZ update.
It is a great aircraft though and a superb addition to the hangar.
Haha, indeed Xavier, hence my little jab about the Canadian flag during the walkaround ; )
It seems to me, that Asobo have essentially given up on the idea of a “Local Legend” being tied in with whichever World Update is released - clearly the Caribou has little-to-no association with NZ. That’s fine though I guess; perhaps we’ll get an NZ aircraft at a later date. Either way, the Caribou is superb as you say!
Happy flying and all the best : )
Great review flight again, thank you so much for sharing your detailed insight! I really enjoy the Caribou as well. It certainly snatched the title for the single-most ugly airframe from the PZL-104 Wilga's skilled attempt to be the No.1 hunk-of-junk in the game 😉
Haha! You certainly wouldn't want the Wilga and the Caribou getting together to create baby aeroplanes XD
I don't know though, I've always thought of the DHC-4 as an ugly aircraft, but somehow it's growing on me! I think it actually looks pretty cool, other than the tail section. . .
I'm glad you enjoyed the flight / video! Thanks very much for watching and all the best : )
Can you link to a tutorial or instruction how to get the walking mode you used in the beginning of the video? Thanks
Hi Alex,
I’m afraid that there isn’t really any tutorial to be had, since most of what you saw during the video was simply use of the drone camera and then a few tricks during editing. That being said, if you do want to be able to “walk” around in the sim, FS Realistic does offer such an option (albeit the functionality does have some drawbacks) and Asobo have said that they will ultimately look to add first person functionality to the sim as well).
ua-cam.com/video/6k7ZA-AGA7M/v-deo.html
I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )
great flight - still not sure that the 'bou is for me, but it's a great combination of systems and flight. Agree with you the landing roll seemed abnormally short, especially when you went tot he outside view, it just looked wrong. Lets hope the DHC-4 doesn't get stuck in the no-upgrade wilderness to make it really worthy
Cheers Brett, happy to hear that you enjoyed it!
Yes, the Caribou certainly has a few areas that could use tweaking and hopefully Orbx will oblige in due course. I do fear that as a “Local Legend”, we’ll see one update and that will be all, but we shall have to wait and see. . . On the plus side, I know at least one person is working on a mod for the aircraft (alongside a real world DHC-4 pilot), so hopefully we’ll see some improvements, one way or another.
All the best! : )
I love the way it looks, personally. 👍🏼
Haha, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, Steve ; )
I do actually like how the Caribou looks from the front, I just find the tail section a bit odd. . .
All the best! : )
I agree. It has a pragmatically designed backside. Somehow, planes like the Hercules get away with it…
The graphics in MSFS2020 is the new standard
They certainly are Vinsu! The sim is still not perfect by any means, but MSFS seems to be going from strength to strength with each update now and when comparing other sims, it’s very hard to look last the beautiful world that Microsoft / Asobo have created!
All the best : )
lol i have jumped out of one of these that was modified with turbine engines. great experience
Haha, rather you than me Spaghetti! I think I’ll stick to the flying ; )
Cheers, all the best! : )
As soon as I saw the title I knew I was going to have to buy this 🙈 Looks like a good aircraft to explore New Zealand in. Except for the slow climb rate maybe..
Haha, I do hope you’re enjoying the Caribou then Øystein - the perfect option for some low / slow cruising over the beauty of NZ!
I think I was flying the DHC-4 rather too fast throughout the flight (ooops); the climb rate should be a little bit more stellar back at around 80-100kts I guess.
Happy flying : )
First thing I thought of was the Buffalo crash right after takeoff where I think the
gust locks were not removed. Airborne, rapid pitch up, stall and drop. As fast as it took to type that.
“That’s it. It’s all over.” Words from the cameraman😢
Hi Jim,
I hadn’t come across that crash before, but having just watched the footage, it’s very sobering indeed. From the little I read, it sounds like the gust lock actually re-engaged, due to some sort of design flaw, which I guess would explain how the crew was able to take off in the first place (but I haven’t verified that version of events). I gather the cameraman was actually the father of one of the crew. Very sad indeed. . .
All the best
It’s a easy airplane to learn the start up sequence I have flown it twice now on msfs and I’ve already memorized the starting sequence.
Very nice video and review....!!! BTW how do you move around in the cockpit so fast? I, right click and move the head. Thank you.
Thanks very much Dennis, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I'm using a head-tracking device called "TrackIR" for the camera movements. It's great, although a little pricey. There are cheaper / freeware alternatives available though, should you wish to give it a go for yourself : )
I hope that helps. My pleasure and the best!
Well, I bought it. Like you said, great for the money! I think it feels pretty dang right with a honeycomb and pedals. I agree your landing seemed a bit too short, but I'm getting reasonable landing distances, perhaps you just nailed it! :D The engines might be indestructible and too easy to start, but they act right.
I noticed the colored bands on the manifold and rpm were colored like a beaver, so I've been using them like real world beaver pilots I've seen. Red for takeoff, green for climb, blue for cruise. I'm really enjoying it, can't wait until I can afford one in FSEconomy! Thanks again, Blue.
P.S. I found the Anti-Icing to be useless.
Ah well I’m very happy to hear that you’re enjoying the DHC-4 then Jacob! The Caribou really is a great addon for the price and certainly not lacking in fun-factor.
My pleasure on the video! Happy flying (not into any icing conditions by the sound of it haha) and all the best : )
Great details. I noticed VR didn't behave exact as a normal aircraft. The aircraft floats into the air compared to a normal nose wheel up first then mains lift off.
Thanks Frederick!
I could be wrong, but I think the flight model is actually pretty true to life there. I rotated way too late in actually (I didn’t appreciate just how slowly one can fly the Caribou), hence the aircraft floating into the air and I gather a little “party trick” of the aircraft, was to do a “wheelbarrow” takeoff, ie taking off with the nosewheel still planted on the ground. If you want to understand a little bit more about the Caribou, I came across a great series of videos, made a real-world ex RAAF Caribou pilot:
ua-cam.com/video/pS_REc-3AgQ/v-deo.html
Cheers, all the best! : )
Nice stop! Dang, the Caribou could almost be a Bush plane.
Haha! Yeah, I’ve seen actual bush planes stop in longer distances than that. . . the Caribou is a Kitfox in disguise I think! XD
Today I did a couple of flights it flys great. Landing are nose down and quick stops with full flaps. Running cargo flights with OnAir after some time away from OnAir. They also have the DC3 on OnAir to be able to do some cargo runs and make some cash. But going back to the Caribou I still need to try some dirt and short fields takeoffs.
Happy to hear that you’re having fun in the Caribou, VA! It is indeed a cracking aircraft / addon.
Happy flying and all the best! : )
This cockpit looks beautiful, but empty cockpits without pilot bodies look so strange too, like Casper the ghost at the stick.
True Christophe; it’s always nice to have the option to display pilot models internally and I wish more devs would make use of the available functionality (I wish Asobo would add more avatar options also).
Cheers and all the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations "…would make use of the available functionality...” so it's possible to have also a pilot in the cockpit in MFS ? Noob question, but for the moment I only play with DCS (for instance, the pilot body in the Viggen cockpit is beautiful and adds a lot of “feeling of being there” realism). All the best too :-)
It’s definitely possible, although not nearly as well implemented in MSFS, as it is in DCS. Certain addons allow the pilot / co-pilot to be displayed internally, though the pilot model used is generally always the default avatar, which is rather lacking in detail and there can be issues with clipping etc also. Here is one such example:
ua-cam.com/video/Y2gAUvItJAk/v-deo.html
I completely agree that a virtual body adds to the immersion greatly and DCS gets this spot on (it looks amazing in VR!).
Have a great weekend! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks for the information. A great weekend to you too :-)
I remember addon for FSX, that changed speed of the road traffic. Should be developed for FS2020 too. Semi doing 200 mph looks strange, even from high altitude.
Haha, that would certainly be useful EJ205T. A semi doing 200 mph is indeed bizarre, all the more so when it’s going around a roundabout! XD
Well I have some catching up to do!
Really like the walk around you did to show of the 3D model. Great immersion.
I'm still not sure about the plane though. While I like utilitarian planes this one doesn't suit my flying.
Also congratulations on the 30k subs! Hasn't been long since you were at 25k.
At this rate you'll be at 50k by the end of the year.
Haha, cheers Dream, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’d been meaning to try a “walkaround” for quite some time, but never got around to setting up the Xbox controller haha.
I’m somewhat surprised! I’d have thought that the Caribou was up your alley; I realise it’s a big old beast, but it’s basically a bush plane ; )
Thanks again for the congratulations. Growth tends to come in fits and starts; it took me forever to claw my way from 29K to 30k haha, but then 31K came pretty quickly (thanks largely to the DHC-4). I’d be surprised if we hit 50K by the end of the year (40K is certainly possible), but I certainly hope you’re right! : P
No sign of the India Foxt Echo Typhoon yet. . . I see the DC Designs version finally got a nice sound update though. Still planning to wait and see what IFE come up with? : )
Cheers!
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Problem is while the carribou is certainly STOL capable unfortunately it's not quite capable enough to get into the spots I'm flying in.
Even with the Turbo Porter it is quite sketchy.
Well regarding the Typhoon I really wanted to wait but with that video series I recently watched I don't think my will is strong enough...
So if your offer still stands I'd certainly like to take it
The offer certainly still stands! Do you have a Just Flight account? Typically, I send people a Just Flight voucher for these sorts of things (though I’m sure we can come to another arrangement otherwise : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations I'll dm you on discord.
But thank you so much again!
Thanks for the vid. Btw...its Tek- a - poe 😉
Cheers Andy, my pleasure, as always!
Haha yes, a few of your fellow countrymen have pointed that out also. In fairness, I did actually watch a short travel vlog, to try and get a feel for how the name was pronounced, but clearly my host led me astray! XD
It’s not the first time I’ve butchered an NZ place name and I doubt it will be the last, but I’m afraid you’ll probably have to put up with it, as I throughly enjoy flying in the region! ; )
Thanks once again! All the best : )
Very nice video. Informative and in-depth as always. Great to watch from beginning to end. I watched this to determine if the DHC-4 was for me or not, and I've decided that it is not. While it is nicely detailed and rich with realistic procedures, I'm more of a simple Skyhawk kind of guy. I do like realism, but MAN, it takes twice as long to get this thing check listed and started than the actual flight. I know I could probably just hit "Ctrl + E" and fly it like I stole it, but what's the point, right? Still, I think the plane is certainly a great value for the money, but for me it would probably end up like the Boeing 247D (which is not as nice as this one IMO) sitting around collecting dust. Again, very nice video! I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
Thanks very much for the kind words NuVersion! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and that it helped you in your purchasing decision : )
To be fair, the Caribou can be started up fairly simply / quickly, a lot of the checks I ran through in the video are somewhat “extraneous” haha. It’s just a “big twin” at the end of the day. Nevertheless, certainly no point in purchasing something, if you don’t think you’ll fly it all that much ; )
Cheers and all the best!
GREAT flight and W U 12 comments. I like the plane, just look at that bulbus nose, the canopy looks like it came off a B52 and don't forget the upswept tail. Just looking old enough to be called "vintage". If I can get it started, I just might give it a go. After all, I like propellers! !! !!!
Haha, if you like props, I'm sure you enjoy the Caribou Mark - it has 2 of them! : P
I was never a fan of the Caribou's aesthetic, but I have to say that the aircraft has really grown on me! Tail section aside, I actually now think the DHC-4 looks pretty cool haha.
If you did pick up this big ol' vintage bird, I do hope you're enjoying it! Cheers : )
Mount Mary is now just a DME facility, the VOR was removed a few years ago.
Ahhh, the mystery is solved then! Skyvector has been wrong on that one for quite some time. . .
Thanks very much for the info, much appreciated! All the best : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Yeah, Skyvector is very much "not for operational use" lol. Reference is NZAIP GEN 3.7-13 (putting on my work hat)...
Haha, indeed ZKCG. I only use SkyVector for simming of course (and it’s generally a brilliant resource for that), but I didn’t appreciated that the website was quite *that* dated in some regards.
Cheers again! : )
I really loved the review, looks like a great plane to do a Africa trip.
But could you maybe add chapters? That'll make it easier if you wanna rewatch something later
Hi Yannick,
Thanks very much, I’m really glad you enjoyed the review! Funnily enough, it was a toss up between Africa and NZ for this video, I’m sure we’ll visit the former at a later date (although some flying in Afghanistan etc could be fun also!).
Ideally, I would love to add chapters, but unfortunately the UA-cam algorithm tends to “punish” me somewhat if I do so. I’ve found when I add chapters, people tend to inherently watch less of the video overall (understandably). A lower average view time on a video, negatively impacts that video being recommended to other viewers and of course ideally I would like my videos to be recommended as widely as possible. It’s a frustrating system and far from ideal, but as helpful as I know chapters would often be, I wouldn’t wish to do something that can negatively impact a video’s success.
I hope that makes sense and apologies for the situation. Cheers and all the best! : )
this is the perfexct plane surplus cargo like this olay passenger complte overhaul refurbishing flexible interiior and probably the only handicap accessable with minor access mods phenominal potential
Excellent review as always ITBS, I've just bought it 👌My type of plane as having watched videos of the Caribou it can take hard landings in it's stride! 😂 Please do a video flying it into Lukla! I hope you do a review of the AN-225 Mriya recently released 👍
Thanks very much Scotty! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and I do hope you’re enjoying the Caribou also (hard landings or otherwise haha). I had thought about a Himalayan flight with the DHC-4, but I’m not really sure she would cope with the altitude; I’m thinking either a run around Africa, or somewhere like Afghanistan could be good fun though.
I do plan on covering the Mriya at some point. I was working at the time the aircraft released and I’ve been very busy of late; I want to wait until I have a decent chunk of time to do the AN-225 justice, before I sit down with that one.
Cheers and all the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Looking forward to it mate 👌
Great review as always. Totally agree about the sounds. There's not much of a sense this a huge powerful noisy aircraft, particularly during engine start up. I've noticed the audio does tend to be the weakest link in so many otherwise great aircraft in the sim. Why go to all the bother of beautiful 3D modelling if the aircraft doesn't sound alive and producing a lot of power? Otherwise though the Caribou is a great addition to the sim and you really can't go wrong at that price.
Thanks very much once again Mobias!
Yes, sounds generally seem to be a weakness of MSFS and I too have often wondered why devs tend to fall down at this hurdle. Of course, it isn’t always easy to record from the real aircraft, but that shouldn’t prevent a dev from creating a “convincing” soundset (that still conveys the sense of power etc). Sounds are definitely a little chink in the DHC-4’s armour, but the aircraft sounds alright in the cruise and is otherwise a joy to fly. As you say, hard to go too far wrong for $15!
Cheers and all the best : )
I'm quite happy with the choice of airports in WU12. NZ isn't about tubeliners, once you get up in the flight levels it doesn't matter what the scenery is like. NZ is about GA and bush flying, and regional turboprop / RJ flights. As you say there are various payware (and freeware) options for the major cities that tubeliners use, in this update Asobo have given us a selection of regional and bush airports that are generally unlikely to get payware love (generally - pretty sure at least Whangarei and Vegas are available somewhere).
What does confuse me is the Caribou - nice as it is, it has zero relevance to New Zealand. I think the only ones that have even been here have been RAAF ones that came over for airshows then went home again. We're a bit limited for iconic aircraft - the CT4 won't cut it because the sim is full of 2 seat trainers, the military ones won't cut it because military, the FU24 would work but is there much demand for topdressers? I think a better choice would have been one of the big Short flying boats that TEAL (Air New Zealand's great grandad) used to fly here from the UK, or maybe a C130 Hercules.
Haha, well I shall defer to your better judgement sir! ; )
I very much agree with your sentiment, I was just quite surprised not to see any of the major airports given some love - I was sure we’d see Ardmore thrown in there as well. . . I’m very happy with the selection though and I’m more than satisfied with the update in general!
The DHC-4 was indeed a bizarre choice, but I just took its inclusion to mean that Asobo is no longer looking to tie the Local Legend aircraft in with their “host” country. The Caribou is *a* local legend, but obviously not relevant to NZ. On the plus side, if that is the case, perhaps we’ll see an NZ “local legend” at a later date (debatable choice, but if MILVIZ want to cough up their 737-200 for free, I wouldn’t complain - I’ve seen a few brilliant Air New Zealand vids with the old 200. An A4 would be good fun as well!
Happy flying and all the best! : )
Nice video! One question?:) how do you get this smooth and very nice camera movements in the cockpit?:)
Hello Adam,
Cheers, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
For the camera movements, I use a head tracking device called “TrackIR”. It’s a great device, although a little pricey. There are some cheaper / “freeware” alternatives out there though, should you wish to try the tech for yourself (and assuming you’re on PC : )
I hope that helps. All the best!
@@IntotheBlueSimulations ok thank you very much!:)
You’re most welcome! : )
The actual name of this aircraft is "de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou" it was designed and built in Canada.
