You are correct. He and Johnny worked so well off each other. Even when Johnny was doing a bit and Ed was sitting on the sofa, just his laugh was hilarious. Especially when a joke bombed and there were crickets from the audience, you could hear Ed laugh.
I wonder why Ed didn’t do the usual shtick that he does with this bit by grabbing the book and saying that “EVERYTHING you want to know about first pictures is in that book.” And then Johnny would come up with some insult, such as “you are wrong El Segundo oil refinery breath.”
After the show went to 60 minutes it changed in a few ways. Some of the regular sketches either disappeared altogether or became very infrequent. I suspect that some of the minor bits such as you mention were also dropped simply for time. However Ed did that bit a few months later for the Manuel For Ladies.
Ed's laugh! ❤️
God I miss these guys
Thank you. I remember this and was curious why they deviated from their “you are wrong ---breath” schtick.
Ed was so underrated with his comedic timing.

I'm so grateful I grew up with these two.
❤️❤️❤️
Maybe Ed McMahon should’ve taken over the Tonight Show
