  • Matt Allen of www.tacticalbas... explains how to catch more bass by walking a frog instead of popping or hopping it.
Many bass fisherman simply pull a hollow body frog across slop or pads. This method of frog fishing can be effective but if you want to get explosive topwater bites, those vicious slow motion topwater strikes that will replay in your mind over and over again, you need to learn to walk a frog in open water.
This is a "how to bass fishing video" but if you stick around to the end you're going to see some awesome topwater catches on the California Delta and Clear Lake with the frog.
Matt and Tim have both seen amazing results open water frogging and hope that you'll put these tips and tricks to work for you so you can experience some of the best bass fishing on earth!

I've watched so many walking frog videos that don't even describe how to do it. Many just glide it on the surface or vaguely describe twitching but you actually show the frogs action and I thank you for that.

Finally a guy who knows how to explain walking the frog. You would make a fine teacher! Slow down with very small rod tip movements is definitely the key!

I've definitely been working the frog too hard. Can't wait to try mellowing out the technique and seeing if that improves the action of the bait. Solid informative video from the archives, thanks, Matt.

Just as a follow-up, My technique definitely improved and I had a lot easier time consistently walking the frog, so to speak. About half a dozen big blow-ups this morning, but no hook-ups. The fish were just not committing to it. I'll get'em next time :)

You make that look so easy lol, great tempo, excellent technique.
I’ve noticed not all pros use that method with the frog, if you watch Mr. Roland Martin he jerks and let’s it sit idle for a sec; which method lands more strikes?
I’m definitely going to practice this technique, looks awesome!

So on those hook sets at the end I noticed you guys are setting the hook almost immediately after the blow up. I have been told before to wait a couple seconds after the blow up to set the hook. What is your take on this?

Well done and very helpful. Making a typical hollow frog walk is somewhat different than doing so with a typical hard bait (spook, sammy, etc.). Good job demonstrating the differences. Also noticed you were making long casts vs. working tight to the cover. Great stuff as always, keep up the good work!

Demetrius Edwards Matt and I are glad this helped you out! The Bully Wa and Spittin Wa are both great frogs. I don't have a favorite because I use both frogs for different applications. The Spittin Wa has a cupped mouth like a popper so it works great in open water. I use the Bully Wa when I'm going to fish mats or cover like vegetation. Hope this helps! -Tim

Victor Esquivel I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Try lefty, you never know. If it won't walk, you're almost always pulling too hard. Also, the rod twitch and the partial turn of the handle happen at the same time, not one then the other.
