Yesterday Tina Turner passed away. Somewhat coincidental that I was recently discussing with someone what I think are the greatest movie intros of all time and this was at the top of the list. Although many would disagree, “Beyond Thunderdome” will always be my personal favorite of the Mad Max films, and she really made it what it is, not only with her screen presence but the soundtrack. Interestingly someone in the UA-cam comments for this video remarked “just think of how cool it would have been to watch this intro in the theater when the film came out”. This person obviously “gets it”, and the ironic thing is the opening is just a black screen and the credits rolling with her singing. It’s hard to grasp how larger than life things were in the 80’s, and she’s one example of that.
Came here for Tina, but also for my love of the Mad Max movies. I was around 10 when Beyond Thunderdome came out and having seen and loved The Road Warrior and Mad Max, I was stoked for Thunderdome, to say the least. My father wasn't the kind of dad that did a whole lot with his children, but I did manage to get him to take me to the theater to see this one a few weekends after the opening. I don't remember his reaction to this intro, but I sure as hell remember mine and its a feeling I haven't forgotten to this day. Thanks to whoever put this up! I have watched it many times just for the intense feeling of nostalgia I get and memories of my youth. It's such a simple opening scene as far as graphics and headers go, which is very much what I like in opening credit scenes. See the Coen Brothers opening for "No Country for Old Men" or even John Carpenter's "The Thing" (after the spaceship crash opening) for similar openings. Thunderdome is different because of the epic music by Tina Turner and it wouldn't have been the same without her. Bravo, Tina! Long live Mad Max!

I saw this in theaters when I was around 15. awesome trilogy.
Yeah. I think you nailed it. This has got to be one of the best opening credits I have ever seen. Just playing the desert wind over the Warner Brothers logo was awesome. And that whoosh-bang when "MAD MAX" Shows up on the screen gave me chills in the theater as a kid. Then Tina's fading "yahoo" as the desert vista comes into view as pure awesome.
I was in the Navy and happened to hit port in Perth in '85 the week the film opened there. It was a packed house and giant screen and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" pressed me down into my seat and kept me there for two hours. Still one of my best memories and yes, one of the best opening sequences ever. Hoping one day to buy a big enough screen to try and duplicate that experience, after I warn the neighbors first.
I know the explanation why. Because when this intro started 30-40 years ago we all knew that we are going to witness something magnificent and out of ordinary, a masterpiece of a movie. Which will unfortunately never happen in the movie history especially not after the year 2000. 90 percent of the movies are pure garbage and CGI shaaaait.

That has to be one of the Greatest and most exciting opening scenes in all of movie history (I remember watching it on HBO back in late 85 and feeling FUCKING PUMPED AND PSYCHED OUT OF MY MIND, all in exhilarated anticipation for the cinematic story that was set to unfold, this story that, although it didn't quite measure up to this mesmerizing, euphoric inducing and amazing opening, didn't disappoint, as it did entertain, and thrill)! It was also this movie that was the final warm up for Mel Gibson, right before his already notable and promising career was catapulted high into the iridescent stratosphere of legendary and iconic greatness, all with his excellent and superb depiction of that unstable, on the edge YET utterly bad ass L.A.P.D. detective Martin Riggs, in that pioneering, hilarious and buddy/cop gem, ""Lethal Weapon (one of my all time favorite movies, as I found it spectacular and original, and whose comedic elements and dry wit drove the movie almost as much as the action, suspense and great acting did)."" Mel pulled that role off to perfection, as that role and movie launched him even higher (and pulled him deeper and more firmly into the Hollywood firmament, something that he capitalized upon brilliantly)! Any ways, what an opening scene, awesome and unforgettable in its exhilarating effect!

Like others here have mentioned, I was in the theater in NYC (in 1985) watching this opening on the big screen, and it was as BIG as those of you who didn't experience it then think it was. Mel and Tina were good together in this film. I wish they would/could somehow team up together again in another film.
Old Mad Max is so awesome. I did see this one in the theater, and back then this was an event. These movies stuck with you...always made you think of what is around the corner.
The best part of this credits sequence (other than the entire song) is just the quick bit of the wind blowing and then boom, the piano/drum beat and "MEL GIBSON". This intro don't fuck around and waste time.
Saw this when I was 7 in 1985. Damn the movies from this era.. there’s no matching them. I was born in 78 a kid in the 1980’s a teenager in the 1990’s. I was extremely fortunate
Utterly fantastic! The first Mad Max film I saw in the theater. Was so pumped and was not let down one bit. All the Mad Max films are great with Road Warrior of course being the best IMO. RIP to the Great Tina Turner!
im an 80s child :-) One of my all time favorite movies of the decade ! Tina Turner added the perfect pizzaz as Aunty Entity, and her opening and closing soundtrack songs are AWESOME !
Wish I was an 80s child. Instead, I'm 21 now and grew up sheltered. I finally saw it the other day, and Blade Runner a little before that. Love those two franchises. That decade offered so much to the television industry
I have been looking for this version of this song for over 26 years. I was very disapointed when it wasn't on the soundtrack in this version. I always thought that someone, somewhere, someday would release this "up-tempo version of "One of the Living" because it really rocks! Alas, this I guess will always be my wish
The mix on this credit sequence is way more EPIC than any other which tend to be "Poppy" I was also disappointed at the other mixes which sound weak compared to this.
@@Paul_1971 This was recorded specifically for the intro and was edited from the demo. A full version was made for soundtrack release but was done differently to avoid licensing issues since the soundtrack version is a different license than the movie one. I saw this in the theatre when I was 18 and we were all excited to see it after loving the Road Warrior - it was a rush when the opening credits started on the big screen with this awesome song, a whoosh, and the words shot out at you - thanks for posting!
Thanks for putting this up. I was gonna myself had I not found it. I may still clean up the 'song' by fading out the end of the track I have. It's a totally bad-ass tune. That it's so short is shameful. Actually, that this version has never been released is the shameful fact. I guess I'm glad to have heard any of it at all ever. The album version doesn't hold a candle. I have to listen to this repeatedly in order to quench the thirst I feel when it's overtaken by the blowing desert winds.
Thank you thank you for posting this. I was walking with my 21 year old son in Historic Folsom, CA. on a rare visit due to the stinking pandemic and well, he's got stuff to do. In front of one of the shops there on Sutter Street stood an upright piano. Note, I already know he's a gifted musician despite no formal training. So we stop in front of the piano and I say, "Play something Ton Ton, something tragic." He goes, "Hmm, ok." And busts out the BAM BAM... BOM BOM chords of this tune like he'd been practicing or even expected it. And it's not one of the more prevalent tunes from the movie. Ghah, he kills me and inspires me all at once.
My dear Tina, a.k.a. "The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" and "Simply the Best ", I'll always cherish the memories of listening to all of music and you will be very much missed by everyone. 😂😢❤❤❤❤❤.
I remember that the movie scenes in the sand dunes were filmed at Kurnell Sandhills ( when there was still some sand). I lived at Cronulla and we would ride out to where the mock-up of the crashed 747 was while they were doing the filming. It was quite an eerie scene. All the cars, Mack truck and the models of a destroyed Sydney were put on display at the Sydney motorshow the next year. I still have old photos of it all that l should probably scan and post somewhere for fans. I remember the opening credits vividly and this takes me straight back to the days of my teens. Years later l had a short personal ferry trip across Sydney Harbour from the film set of 'Water Rats' Steve Bisley was on board also. What an honour sitting opposite the legendary 'Jimmy the Goose' in the flesh. He said hello and chatted quite freely, genuine nice guy. I think of him everytime l see a Kawasaki Z900. Great youth, great times, great raw talented movies.

One of the best openings in cinema!
Saw this when I was 7 in 1985. Damn the movies from this era.. there’s no matching them. I was born in 78 a kid in the 1980’s a teenager in the 1990’s. I was extremely fortunate
I saw this and the others at the movies growing up. LOVED this LOUD. I bought the program and a button in the lobby with my popcorn. Never forget it.
Utterly fantastic! The first Mad Max film I saw in the theater. Was so pumped and was not let down one bit. All the Mad Max films are great with Road Warrior of course being the best IMO. RIP to the Great Tina Turner!
Man what a great movie..and song.
We miss you Tina. This song is a soundtrack to my life. 🌟💯🔥
I still hope in one day this song version are include for complete in a ultimate CD Soundtrack Collection.
ahh memories of 1980s optimism...comes back every time l listen...
l am still one of the "living"
R.I.P. Tina man it sucks to get old.
im an 80s child :-) One of my all time favorite movies of the decade ! Tina Turner added the perfect pizzaz as Aunty Entity, and her opening and closing soundtrack songs are AWESOME !
Tina was outstanding as Aunty. Very impressive performance from a rock star turned actor. She brought it.
Wish I was an 80s child. Instead, I'm 21 now and grew up sheltered. I finally saw it the other day, and Blade Runner a little before that. Love those two franchises. That decade offered so much to the television industry
This version is actually better than the other 'cover' version
yes it truely is
I know... i would love to have had a full length of this version... the studio version is weak
@@moonscar119 agreed
So powerful!
Better than original even
Most badass intro ever..
Was there when it opened at age 29. The theater erupted in applause when the music took off after the opening wind sounds
I saw this in the movies ,I was almost 10yrs old.awsome
One of the greatest movies ever, great songs, great scenarios, amazing!!!!
Am sure ive got the vinyl single somewhere...
@@Paul_1971 This was recorded specifically for the intro and was edited from the demo. A full version was made for soundtrack release but was done differently to avoid licensing issues since the soundtrack version is a different license than the movie one. This enabled her to release it on an album later.
Really sets the mood for the film used to own the VHS then then the Laserdisc then the DVD but there is no blu ray only for the 1st two movies i have just ordered the limited edition soundtrack by maurice jarre i already have a 12" version of this song and the album one of the best openings from an 80s movie
Electrifying intro! This always revved me up for what was to come in this third installment!
I do remember seeing this film in the 80's several times in my local cinema in the UK, love all the mad Max films, and Tina turner.💖💖😁
R.I.P. Tina Turner. My favorite song from T.T.!!
One of the most coolest intro music to a movie!
I was there- 29 years old and it was very, very cool.
I love the way it starts off with the wind blowing, awesome intro to a really under-rated film.
This song definitely gets me amped up. It was my warm up song to get ready for last Fall’s IBJJF Jiu Jitsu. Competition. I’m 48 and this song is still magic.
This film helped me prepare for 2020.
great intro to a great movie
The whoosh bang of the title is so awesome
Such a great opening
I was born in 85. 😀👍 Tina turner,s voice is so powerful love herr♥️♥️♥️ best openning of mad max movie...one of the living great i grew up with mad max movies i miss the interceptor 😥
Who's here to hear Tina Turner's AMAZING voice after the Heartbreaking news?
YES! That's the spirit! 1985 was the GREATEST YEAR EVER: Commando, Rambo 2, Mad Max 3, Rocky 4, Back to the Future...
No doubt: GREATEST INTRO SONG EVER !
Man, I always flip in ethusiasm every time I listen to this MASTERPIECE.
Ah Tina Turner... you made the 80's better...
...even better than the Official record version in the Soundtrack Album.
COOLEST MOVIE MUSICAL THEME EVER.
Umas das melhores abertura de filme que já vi perfeito
Definitely - very impactful!
After the death of all my loved ones, I can definitely feel the tune of this song.
I'm sorry for your loss ..
My childhood, thanks for uploading.
RIP Tina Turner, another legend gone to see captain walker
Always liked this song better than the overplayed Another Hero. This one's more fitting for the Max series.
This opening still gets me every time I watch this movie, basically I'm 10 years old again without a care in the world..
Best Max opening ever!
Probably considered by many as the most kick-ass opening credits in film history.
They don't make 'em like this anymore. So, sad.
Rest in peace Queen Tina!!
Just heard this on a flight. Listened to it over and over with noise reducing headphones. Insane how good it is
R.I.P. to the Queen of Rock & Roll, Tina Turner
I did see it in the theaters in the 80's. AWESOME, the ultimate MAD MAX, and bless Auntie Entity.
Best intro to any movie that could of ever been made :D
It DID feel amazing seeing this in the theater for the first time. the song still gives me chills.
Tina Turner passed away recently at 83, God bless her soul, and RIP.
Love the "WOOoosh" sound when the title appears 0:23
Best Intro with Top Gun!
Agreed. Those two. Have always said so.
Copy that, Mav-
Sounds MUCH BETTER with these instrument samples than the original released single and the one on Soundtrack LP
This shit hits hard!
This is awesome!! I'd love to find the full song of this version. Thank you so much for posting this!
No, best intro music to any movie ever made!
Clicked the studio released version and thought.. hold on a minute this isn't right!? Came here.. anxiety gone.. ears happy 👍👍
This version should really have been released by now.
I became a Tina Turner fan right as I seen the opening credits for this movie!
My dear Tina, a.k.a. "The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" and "Simply the Best ", I'll always cherish the memories of listening to all of music and you will be very much missed by everyone. 😂😢❤❤❤❤❤.
Finally, the original version!!! Thank you so much!!!
The Collector, Pig Killer, Blackfinger, Dr. Dealgood, Mr. Sky fish, Scrooloose. Mad Max movies have the best nicknames.
