Watched this before I bought my first machine and I’ve rewatched…. A few times since. Every time I see MORE! This continues to be a timeless valuable resource. Peace & Thanks.
I'm so glad I had some helpful tips to share! You may find something helpful in my Addi playlist: Addi Playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
I received a Miaoke machine for Christmas. I didn't know which machine I wanted but I want to knit faster and use up all the yarn I have hoarded over the years. I donate all of my hats and scarves to a local shelter. This machine works perfectly with some yarns and not so well with others. I'm happy to have watched some of your videos. I believe your tips will eliminate some of my frustrations.
Oooo... thank you, Wooly! I wish those older videos were better. (I didn't know how to edit very well back then!) I should probably make some new ones for the next generation!
Hi Margaret! I just bought a Jamit machine. I wanted the ADDI King but they seem to be sold out everywhere and I needed something else to keep my hands busy. I spent most of today playing with my new machine and was getting very frustrated. I had watched many videos but something wasn't right. I found this video a nd what a game changer! Thank you so much. Your delivery is perfect and I followed your tips and started another hat. I am almost finished and so far it looks great! I am so excited. I like to do charity knitting but I cannot hand knit all day due to arthritis. I love all of your videos. I am going to make a point of going back and watching ALL of them.
Ahhh, thank you! Best video I've seen. I picked up a cheap machine for my kids (second hand) for them to play around with.. and this video helped so much
Oh my dear. You convinced me to not put my machine on the trash... I will try again! Really I prayed so many times before using it asking God for help. God bless you. Thanks, again
Thank you thank you thank you. You saved my knitting machine from the trash bin. Now i will have a lots of fun, instead of swearing and think i´m totally stupid. You are a star. Thank you again. Anna-Karin from Sweden
I'm a crocheter and loom knitter, making a jump to add circular knitting machines to my crafty repertoire. Ordering both the Addi King and Addi Pro (I also do TONS of crafting for charity!) and was looking for ways to speed up what I'm doing and boost my output (more stuff getting out to where it needs to go!) Your videos are a great resource, can't wait for my machines to arrive!
I have exactly the same cheapy machine you used in this video. Thank you! I really need to see someone else use it and find the written instructions a real challenge. I donated 54 hats this year prior to getting the machine. I can't wait to see how many I can donate next fall.
Just bought myself a knitting machine and came acrossyour video after watching someone else’s on trying to show how to cast on and off and just couldn’t get it after many many attempts with out dropping on the first two rows after watching yours I finally got it on first try . Thank you ! I Think I’m gonna enjoy this little machine after all .
Hello there! Your video is very good. I bought my knitting machine a week ago. Sentro with 48 needles from Aliexpress. It works fine. I went to youtube only to find out how to make the 1st row, because the yarn was falling of, as in 1 of your tips. All the other tips I literally discovered myself, really. All you need to do is be interested and patient. Have a great day!
When I did my first Addi videos there was nothing so I sort of took you along for the ride as I figured it all out. You certainly don't have to discover all this stuff by yourself anymore as there are TONS of informational posts and videos at your fingertips. No reason to struggle through when you can hit the ground running and begin creating and discovering NEW things!
Thanks for your tips! I have just bought a machine and am learning how to use it. This video was easy to understand and have helped me not to give up. I like the idea of the weights and will go out for some tomorrow.
Thank you so much for these tips. I was doing so good 2 yrs ago. Then the pandemic and not being able to find a lot of foods. I started doing alot of food prepping. Ready to knit again, I've forgotten how having to learn allover.
You are amazing! Thank you for doing all this researh for us. I have a Knit Quick machine like the one you threw away. I've had it for three years and it's still working fine.
I started on the large sentro machine and it worked perfectly right out if the box. But it DOES work better with certain yarn. The pink generic i got second and i got it to work but again the yarn matters. Finally, i did get the addi and of course it works better with all the yarn i had except the bulky yarn.
WONDERFUL video for people like myself who are wanting to learn how to begin using a knitting machine!! Especially for me because I have always wanted to knit/crochet/etc. by hand but can't because of an injury in 1990 that left me quadriplegic (paralyzed with no finger movement) when I was only 17 yrs old. So, thank you so very much!
Glad it was helpful, Charlene! I have a few other tips and tricks videos in my playlist if your interested: Addi Playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
Thank you I’m a beginner knitter and crochet enthusiast and you help me not to through out my knitting round machine I was loosing stitches and I believe using the wieght trick and watching carefully will really help I’m going to give it another go this evening, thank you for sharing very helpful:)
You're so welcome, Anita! Don't be shy about adding weight to the machine. It can handle more than you think. In my Addi playlist, I show how I forced some really difficult yarn to behave! Ha! Love your videos! I just received a 48 pin Sentro for a Christmas. After watching your videos, I was lucky enough to find a round table for me to set the machine on. I cut a hole in the middle of the top. There is a open basket attached to catch the knitted fabric in.
Thank you so much Ive been struggling all day and thought 'I' was the problem. Your advice will help me start again in the morning with fresh enthusiasm.
I’m so glad I could help, Christine! It definitely wasn’t you.... most people aren’t aware there’s a learning curve with these machines. You’ll get your rhythm soon enough and it will be a breeze!
Hi I'm new to the knitting game. I started with the looms I worked my way up to the double circular rotating loom and now I'm at your level here. the first thing I did was put a silicone mat underneath the feet cuz I was working on a wooden table and I knew that wasn't going to stay put so that's my tip silicone mat inexpensive keeps it from sliding thanks for the video and the tips.
Glad that worked for you, Marianne! These little machines are such fun little gadgets aren't they?! Here's my Addi Playlist in case you find anything interesting in there: ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
I will be honest. I just came from another video about a guy trying to make his own one of these machines and the transition to this machine made too much sense! I actually enjoyed this video even though I did not intend to try my hand at this but now I kind of want to give one of these machines a shot!
They’re interesting little machines! Before you buy anything, be sure to watch this video: Addi Express FAQs, Tips, Explanations! ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html Other machine reviews are in my Addi Playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
Just purchase a machine and looking around UA-cam for information on what to look for and Patterns this was very help full information. Thanks very much.
So happy I found you. I finally opened my Sentra 48 needle yesterday. I spent all day looking at various videos and just couldn't get it to work. It kept dropping stitches after the cast on. Your cast on directions were different and really made the difference. I finally have some knitting on my machine! Thank you so much! 🙂🤗 I have subscribed and will be following you.
Use a soft rubber mat under the machine if it's on a shiny surface - or fit a balloon over each foot which will give additional traction. Love these videos : )
That's a great idea for traction but I really need it affixed to the table. (Not everybody does.) During the cranking process, it moves up and down not just forward and backward... at least for me it does!
@@margaret.olander PS. Applause! for your comments about sex stereotyping. Nobody crochets better than a fisherman repairing nets. 40yrs ago chauvinism at School saw a number of girls barred from Wood/Metalwork & Technical Drawing classes. Shame on sexist Manufacturers. They do a lot of harm to enthusiastic & capable but suppressed/bullied-out individuals. My sister married a macho German Engineer who one day saw her machine-knitting a cableknit sweater; He jokingly guffawed, "I bet I can do that". She smiled,........at the flawless Arran sweater he produced 1 week later.
I agree! Don't tell me I can't do something! My friends still think I'm doing an "old lady thing" which is just another form of stereotyping. Whatever. 😉
Thank you, Christy! That's just what I set out to do when I started these Addi info videos. When I first got mine, there was little to NO info on them anywhere so my goal was to take you along with me as I figured these things out on my own! (So forgive those older videos, they're horrible but they have good info in there! Ha!)
Love your videos. Here's an additional tip for stubborn yarns. Like in your demonstration when you changed yarns and you had the lifting problem...I have found placing my hand gently but firmly on the knitted stitches, just before the needles begin to rise up. It helps keep the yarn down on the teeth where it belongs. I also knead the knitted stitches a little down inside the machine to keep the stitches uniform. Your weights will help as well. I've just found this also helps when changing yarns. Also when i make hats I roll up the completed work inside the machine. It gives the added weight and tension needed to keep the yarn from lifting. I don't have a table with the slot in it, so my work will always knot up and it was very frustrating.
I love mine and have so much fun making hats for children! Based on your review, I bought the Loops and Threads with a 60% off coupon, thank you very much 😄 over a year ago! Also, I actually hold/secure the machine with my left hand while cranking with my right hand and that has worked well for me. ❤️
I'm so glad your Loops and Threads machine has held up nicely! I wish they could improve the consistency of production quality because it's a perfect size. This little pink machine seems to work beautifully so keep that in mind if ever yours wears out!
I am new to circular knitting I started with Addi King and have been delighted so far. I found that winding the balls on my wool winder helps them go through easier even very course yarn. I place my yarn into ice cream box like we do on my mums long bead knitting machines then place wool winder wound ball in and cast on start knitting, works the best, I have tried straight from balls but it just seams to start dropping stitches. I live in New Zealand so yarns we get here are different. Alpaca goes through very well and knits like a dream.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Kristen! It's funny how we all develop ways that work best for us. Someone out there will surely benefit from this!
Margaret Olander I have been watching your videos on the addi for sometime now I love helpful hints you give along with your reviews on other circular knitting machines. YOU INSPIRED ME TO GETTING MY ADDI.BIG THANK YOU.
Glad I'm re-viewing some of your videos. Watching you convinced me to order both Addi machines, and now that they're here and all is not instant success, re=watching is showing me why.
Very wise, Deborrah! I can't tell you the number of people who complain about the machine only to discover that there's actually a learning curve involved! The machines are so misleading because it really DOES look so simple! In truth, after you get down the "personality" of your particular machine, it IS easy but there ARE some tricks to learn first. I hope a few of these tips can speed you along to success! Be sure to check the description box for a special page on my blog devoted to these machines where you'll see a link for the Addi King Loomers and Knits group on Facebook. It's a great resource for help!
Your greatest tip was don’t give up. Keep knitting for about 15 turns was great. After about 14 rounds I was ready to quit. But I kept going and BINGO there it went, just like a Breeze.
Isn't that strange?! For some reason, certain yarns just need some time to get in the groove! Ha! (Like me when I first wake up in the morning!) Glad I had something helpful to share!
Hey Margaret! I got my new addi Pro to replace the addyi that does not count. Had a lot of trouble with it and ended up taking it all apart. Thank you for giving me the confidence to take it apart! LOL it bound up very tightly, and I was looking for needles that were bent or didn't work so I had it all apart. In the long run since I didn't want to send it back to Germany as they wanted me to I looked even closer with a little flashlight and found out it's the new row counter! Anybody that tells Addie that they really need a counter on their Addi, will probably get this new one back in the mail. They should just expect it to get a bit tight around the black needles and when it's past counting it snaps kind of loud and then it goes again. You just have to put up with the noise. Just keeping you up on my latest shenanigans! I figured that you would want to know about that because people will think there's something wrong with the machine and it's just the spring inside that makes noise when it counts the row for you. I hope this wasn't too disorganized, but I have ADD and it's the best I can do! LOL!
That is exactly what I thought with my Addi, that there was something wrogwith it and if I continued that i would damage it.. Now I know what the snapping sound is as you pass the black needle and now I am using it confidently. Its going brilliant, and I used Stylecraft Special Effects DK Yarn (I'm in UK). Knitted scarf and hat sets and Ive watched all Margarets videos and learned a lot from her. Thank-You Margaret, couldnt have done it without these fantastic informative videos. And Thank-You Cookie for pointing that out about the counter on the Addi.
Oh my goodness, Margaret, please can I move to the states and come live with you? I have been knitting and crocheting for 12-13 years and I absolutely love it, I've just purchased my very first knitting machine and I made a hat yesterday, I managed okay with other tutorials but you are amazing! You go into so much detail and you make sure you show us everything you do very clearly! I'm going to have a look through your page when I've watched this video all the way through so I don't know yet if you've done a video on colour changing when using a machine but if you haven't, would you be able to do one please? You are officially my favourite UA-cam knitter ❤️❤️❤️
What a lovely compliment to wake up to this morning! Thank you, Courtney! I do have other tutorials as I was one of the very first to put up videos on the subject BUT that means the earlier ones were done before I had a better camera and some editing skills! Ha! Be patient with those older ones! ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
I bought suction cups for my loops and threads 40 needle machine and found that galvanized steel diy signs found in most craft departments or craft stores allow a good suction to take place with the suction cups and using a set of clamps makes a temporary platform for the machines.
Love your performance style. I’ve been on Bond, Silver Reed, Brother Punchcard, (with ribbing bed) Brother Chunky knit and Knitmaster machines since early 1980s. BUT I’m really excited as have TWO Addi circular knit machines on order. (1 each size) in the 1980s we used to put Mohair yarn in the REFRIGERATOR for a day or so BEFORE knitting on machines, it really helps. Try it with other yarns? I also agree , watch UA-cam, I learnt REVERSIBLE Fairisle knitting, both sides are the RIGHT (knit side). with the Fair Isle pattern appearing on opposite sides with colours reversed😎 It’s like commercially knitted Double Jacquard. Soooooo looking forward to new machine technique. I may post a video revealing my results with the Addi working with my own hand spun yarns. Big LoveLight Stephen ❤️
I've heard of the refrigerator tip but have never tried it! Glad to know it works. I have a flat bed that broke shortly after i purchased it second hand and haven't bothered to find a repair shop. Now, lack of time is an issue so it will have to wait some more. Good for you for learning to double knit! It looks way above my skill set!
My husband put1 my machine on a board then little blocks with hole in middle just big enough to have suction cups to fit in glued suction cups into place works great and easy to move around
You have THE BEST tutorials. I just bought the smaller Singer machine from Amazon and knew you could tell me exactly how to use it. Also your fork.... Oneida Marquette right? I have the same set(since 1991). I have the larger Sentro machine on the way. Thanks for making this so easy.
Yes! Oneida Marquette and we've had it since 1988 and it's still available because we had some forks "disappear" and I had to replace them a few years ago! (And thanks for the kind words about my videos!)
@@margaret.olander Same here. My spoons kept walking out of the house ;) I dared my 2 sons and husband to take anymore of them out after I spent major $$ for replacements. You are welcome. I found you when i first started crocheting (the double thick potholder) back in 2015.
Margaret, you are soooo right!! this red heart super saver was a horrible experience, but when I tried just using Caron 1lb purple, was a beast to use! BUT I did get through it. I am doing your version of Kate Spade's color block scarf and hat. I did get through it with your help and using my left hand to tension it. Thank you so much for your information, teaching and sharing everything with us newbies!
Yes indeed, each yarn will perform differently, and I also finally got my innovations machine running. I had given up all hope for that machine, but it works with your advice you have given me, and I so appreciate it! Tension sure does help and learning how to control it. thank you again! @@margaret.olander
Glad it was helpful! I have a few other tips and tricks in my playlist if you're interested and I recommend this video first: Addi Express FAQs, Tips, Explanations! ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html then Addi Playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
I realized that this was an older video when you said that the Addi machines are in the $200 range. Now in Canada they are in the $400 range! That’s why I bought the Sentro for S100!
I have the Sentro machine 48 needles, I've made 3 hats so far, and I'm about to attempt my 1st blanket with idk how many tubes, depends on how wide each tube is, I am gonna make a queen sized blanket
You are such a wonderful teacher, thank you for the videos, I started off with the same piece of junk that you showed us all, and I thought that's it I'm just not destined to be able to do this! So the piece of junk sat there for a while, then I thought well, it's not working anyway, so I pulled it apart, and discovered that it was just never going to work the way it was made it was a bodgy item from the start!! I have since bought an innovations one and providing I use lighter yarn and weight as well as giving it a tug from time to time, I'm pretty happy with it, although, it does seem to be shredding itself as there is white plastic dust on the surface, but I still like it. Recently though I have gotten an addi and it's really nice, but it did cost nearly $400 Australian dollars. Cheers!
What a lovely compliment! Thank you! Yes, the Addi machines are pricey but are so much better. But I have to say this little pink generic machine I'm using in this video is a champ! I've given it quite the workout and it's holding up beautifully and works like a charm. I like that it makes mid-size products, too!
Margaret Olander thank you for your reply, especially since you are very busy, all those beanies (hats)! I'm going to see if I can get one of those pink ones, l'm not sure how long my innovations one will last. I like the two sizes also, and I would like to get the smaller addi as well but I was looking at the video again and you had small ones there, which one was the best one out of the cheapies in your opinion and can make babies beanies for the hospital. In my little village here in Tasmania, we have a lovely little yarn shop, and the lady has a chalk board with sayings on it, this is the saying for the week, "knitting takes balls!" Oops! Hopefully no one takes offence it's meant to be fun. Thank for your videos, and your happy face. Cheers!
I just bought a less expensive 20 pin machine. Made in China of course. Got it today, about 4 hours ago. Been watching YT videos for over a week, so thought I was ready. Wrong! My first problem was figuring out tension. Combined with how to keep this legless thing from moving around. Figured out how to keep it stable while keeping appropriate tension. #1: Pull new yarn out of the skein (a few yards at a time as needed) until it will flow freely. Found a way to hold down the machine (hand through the base with thumb on front upper face) while running yarn between my thumb and hand. I'm also working up plans to build a dedicated circular knitting table. Waiting for the second, larger machine to arrive before cutting any lumber. One thing for sure: there will be a hole in the middle for the project to drop through. Rearranging a 3 foot piece of fabric every few rows is, to me, unacceptable. Then noticed the yarn was not always sliding down the back of the separation bumps. The yarn was snagging on poorly molded bits. Wound up using an Emery board to gently file the sides and inside points smooth. It took some time, but it was worth it! After several false starts and messes, I have now completed a full 3 foot long tube. It still looks a bit wonky, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with my tension and forgetting to pull more yarn out of the skein. Thank you for your tips. I have been watching the wrong spot, and didn't catch quite a few stitches that didn't drop properly. Off to start another tube! 😆
Lol I’m a hit the ground running type...but after watching videos like this I am so glad I went with Addi in the first instance to have the best chance of initial success ..which makes you WANT to keep going!
I bought the Weaver Epoch the one you just demonstrated. It worked beautifully for me right out of the box. My first hat came out great even with 3 diffrent color yarns.
OK I was on Amazon and I saw this machine. It is one of those knitting machines but it’s a circular knitting machine but it’s got a square but it’s got square body to it and it is 99% just like the Addy it comes with clamps to hold it down, screwdriver to tapestry noodles and a crochet hook baby and two yarn. Two skeins of yarn.
Everything you have said here is true in my experience. I have found that for me, different yarn works better in different machines, for example, i could not get my red heart supersaver yarn to work on anything but my addi. However the caron simply soft worked great with all my machines . I have not yet tried the vannas choice. What i have found recently is that i have to start over 2 or 3 times before the machine decides to cooperate and work. Same yarn, just takes re starting, so dont give up. Btw i have the large, pink sentro (that was my first one), the smaller pink generic (the one Margaret uses here) and the large and small addis.
great comment!! have you ever tried cashmere yarn? (if it even exists, or maybe merino yarn). that is the only reason i want to buy a knitting machine. but since you have tried so many yarns with different machines you would probably know immediately if they work or not. I hate to spend $300 on a large adi (or whatever they cost) only to find out i'm stuck with acrylic D: lol I am severely sensitive and can't wear any artificial fibers.
Glad it was helpful, Sara! Since you're trying to learn more about these machines, you may like this one: Addi Express FAQs, Tips, Explanations! ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html
Hi Thanks for the insight I am looking for a productive hobby and thought I would give one of these Machines go. I hope the one that broke wasn't the knitting circle one as I have just brought it (starting cheap to see if I can do it)
I have the Sentro 48 pin machine and what i've found is that my solid colours work better than variegated because they are softer. I've found some use out of adding some baby powder to the centre of the skein to soften the yarn, and increased the tension and I stopped dropping stitches on the variegated stuff.
Oh! now there's a tip I've never heard! Thanks, Craig! Here's another way: Make that Yarn Work on Your Machine: ua-cam.com/video/wQ6yguaaHAE/v-deo.html
so my mum got me a Sentro Knitting Machine and we were trying to figure out what we were doing wrong, I ended up googling how to use the machine, and your video showed up. TY, we would of returned it, if we hadn't of seen your viceo.
Hello again, Margaret,My question has to do with "reversible hats". These are the ones that are made of a double layer of material and as they come off the Addi King-size, they are twice the length of a single layer hat. Once they are knit, the bottom is shoved inside ... up towards the top of the hat. As I understand it, the two layers of material are NOT knit together at the top as seems to be the case when one adds a pom-pom to such a hat.Once the hat is knit and turned inside out, the strands of yarn are clipped off about a half inch long - where yarn has been joined or where color changes were made. My question has to do with how can this hat be "reversible" if all of those approx. 1/2 inch long strands of yarn will still be visible?Blessings to youDavid
My method is close up one end and trim the tail so that it doesn't show at all. Then, I close up the other end BUT I don't trim the yarn yet because I use it to sew the 2 ends together after stuffing one end inside the other. Once the ends are attached to each other securely, I guide the needle between the 2 layers of the hat, poke it out through one layer about 4 inches down, and snip the yarn. That 4 inches of yarn is neatly sandwiched btw the 2 layers of hat.
Could you please demonstrate the ADDI machine ? I'm a newbie and I liked your demonstration of this video. I'm kind of confused my first encounter with this equipment🙄
The worst machine I ever used was the Bond Ultimate Sweater Machine. My joke with my family is that it was a pox upon my house. I am a very specific person, and can usually get anything to work the first time. The issue with the bond knitter, is the catching of the cartridge on the needles- and general poor design. I'm still looking for a good flat panel machine and considering getting a vintage Singer. Right now I have a Sentro, and even though it's great at knitting in the round, it takes some work to do panels as it loves to drop the end stitches.
I have ordered the 2 addis and the 46 pin one and your little pink one there. I am waiting anxiously for them to be delivered . Wont be here for another 4 weeks but once i receive them, i am looking forward to making nice things with them.
You can also screw the feet to a separate board and then clamp that board to the table with much smaller clamps. Makes it more easily stored because you'll probably never take the feet off again anyway.
Thank you so much I had watched other tutorials on how to use it through UA-cam and just couldn’t get it. But your hints and tips have worked a charm I’m gonna be able to knit so many more hats for charities now 😍 in a fraction of the time !!
I'm really enjoying all your very informative videos and am happy I subscribed to your channel. I will hopefully be getting my first knitting machine on or before Christmas and until then I'm going to try some manual loom knitting. I'm a crocheter and these knitting machines and even loom knitting is all new to me, but I love yarn, so time to learn a new craft and keep evolving! Thanks for all your help! It's much appreciated!
I started with loom knitting, Beverly! Then I moved to crochet, couldn't get the hang of knitting; found these machines; later learned to knit and I still love these machines! Ha!
Your timing is impeccable! I have been wanting to try a circular knitting machine as I own several flatbed machines (the sweater machine). I didn't want to drop a lot of money to find I didn't like it so I bought a machine in the toy section and paid $18 for it. There are some hitches along the way but I love it. This video has been so helpful. I am hoping someday to be able to invest in a sock machine I am so fascinated by them but terrified at the same time! I love the time saving feature of it though, I can make so many more gifts in a shorter amount of time. Thank you again for this video I look forward to seeing your face on my subscription list.
Oooo.... a sock machine! Those are so cool, aren't they?? Glad you're having fun with your new little machine! I would like to meet the person that figured out how to make them. They fascinate me!
Love your videos I have the small addi express. Love it. Im going for the King Size soon. Have you tried the little cheap one that looks like a penguin. I ordered it for my niece, but I'm gonna try it first. Lol.
Greetings, Margaret,I am wondering if anything can be done about my Addi King-size being very hard to crank at times. It does run freely when no yarn is on the machine. I am guessing that the particular yarn being used may be a factor, but, then again, I am not really sure. I only use #4 worsted weight, 100% acrylic yarns like "I Love This Yarn" by Hobby Lobby and "Simply Soft" by Caron. As you have pointed out before, yarns can vary in actual thickness - even amongst the same yarn "family". Different colors within that same family can also vary in thickness.Of course all of these machines do seem to "drag" somewhat when they reach the counter & that is expected. Thicker yarns do seem to be harder to crank in my experience. When the machine is really "laboring" during the cranking, I find it can "wear out the operator" much more quickly. Do you have any suggestions concerning this? Thank you so very much, fellow charity knitter!David
I really don't have anything to add, David, as you seem to understand everything I know! In a nutshell, merely adding the yarn element puts tension on the machine. Thicker yarn naturally adds more tension thus making it harder to crank. If the #4 worsteds are giving you a problem, try letting them flow freely into the machine (applying no tension or guidance with the left hand)
Great idea, Ms. Margaret. Thanks so much for your responses to my two comments. You obviously spend endless hours of your day helping knitters such as myself for zero compensation. So few would even contemplate such generous service to folks you have never even met. I believe that you are indeed a rarity in this world.
I know this video is 4 years old, but I'm just beginning on my machine. How do you change colors mid- project? I LOVE variegated yarns, but there's no control over where different colors will stop in your projects, so I'd like to use different solid colors throughout. THANK YOU!
Old videos are still current as long as the info is still relevant! In my Addi playlist there are a bunch of skill tutorials (very old video warning) and you’ll see one about how to cast on and off and how to change colors. I really enjoy your videos. You’ve inspired me to get a knitting machine. I do charity crochet too. I dabble in knitting but am very slow. I would like to hear more about using waste yarn. When and why use it, how to work around it and the best ways to remove it. Again thanks for the great videos.
Hi, Eloise! Before you buy a machine, make sure you watch this video: Addi Express FAQs, Tips, Explanations!ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html Re: waste yarn, you use that in knitting with a plan to remove it later after adding something in it's place. It preserves the tension on the stitches you'll be working in. Great for adding edging/ribbing/finishing techniques with a crochet hook or knitting needles. In my Addi playlist, you'll see me demonstrating some of these techniques. (Sorry for those old videos before I had a good camera and learned how to edit!) ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html
Great video! Craft Smart does not work for me at all, but Red Heart works beautifully. I love using my machines. I have the one from Micheals and the revised little singer. I use them to make the bodies for stuffed animals then I loom knit the arms and legs. I love watching your videos.
Isn't that so strange that some yarns behave beautifully and others cause a ruckus?? I'm so glad you got a good Michael's machine! I loved that thing and was so sad when it broke. I'm holding out hope for this new little pink "generic" since it's the same size as the Loops and Threads. And thank you for the kind words about my videos... I'm just happy to have people like you to share my interests with!
7:05....But...every single time I've got onto the first row after correct method cast-on (alternate hooks) - well that first row will NOT knit. The only way I can get that row knitted is to manually place and slowly knit each and every stitch. I'm ultra careful on row 2 as well. After that, it knits just fine. So obviously I'm doing something not quite right...I'd like to blame the machine, but it must be something I'm doing or not doing right. After that cast on row, it's pretty straightforward (I'm not trying any fancy stitches yet), and I've successfully changed yarns mid-knitting without leaving a hole or causing dropped stitches. First yarn I used was just like you recommended to begin with. Dropped stitches on first knit row. Second yarn was a smooth 8 ply. Dropped stitches on first knit row. Tried a slightly fluffier yarn. Worst mess ever. Tried each of these yarns three or four times per attempt at first knit row, and the stitches drop; and I triple checked that I'd cast on properly. Got me beat. I'll go watch your cast-on video for the third time. Or however many it takes. Seriously, I've put a warp on a four shaft floor loom all by myself, so I can do this. P.S. You can tell I only got to 7 minutes into your video and had to vent! Okay, I'll try weights. I was wondering about that from the get-go. I've got a knitting bed machine which requires weights. I'll also keep trying different yarns. Many thanks for all your tips.
Oh my goodness! You must be so frustrated with this machine! I wish I could run over and help but this video is the best I can offer! Hope you found something in it that can solve the problem!
I wish you could run over too!! Lol. Seriously, though, your video has helped me calm down without the need for alcohol. (Not that I drink, but lately I was wondering WHY I don't drink!) It'll be fine. Known for my persistence but not necessarily my patience. I've knitted two beanies; even if I have to manually knit first knitting row, as long as everything works after that, I will persist and use all your suggestions until the operator (me) figures it all out. Thank you very much. Most useful video on UA-cam relating to the subject.
Yesterday, after several attempts (changing yarns, modifying tension at cast-on row) I identified that it's my cast on tension that is the issue. Had no success yesterday, and traumatized my sleeping dogs when I screamed in frustration. (I won't share with a gently bred southern woman such as yourself what I said). Just as well everyone across the road in the retirement village is deaf. Today, success. Cast-on row I put yarn anticlockwise around every hook, and took it really slowly for first knit row. It worked for this attempt. Thank you for your moral support. My New Year's resolution (early) is to refrain from bad words. The dogs were very obedient all day.
I can't thank you enough for your on-going time and generosity. My only concern, before putting my money down, is that the resulting fabric will be too open. I used to do more hand knitting before my hands stopped cooperating and am accustomed to a firm fabric for mittens. I understand it's difficult to be specific, but on average, what gauge do these machines achieve? Thanks in advance for any reply.
Oh, Cate... gauge varies greatly depending on yarn choice and the tension of the person doing the knitting just as with regular needles. In truth, learning to control gauge is one of the unique skill sets you'll gain as you embark on circular machine knitting. (thicker yarn gives you a tighter fabric) For ME, I feel like the machine is the equivalent of having only 6 or 7 mm needles to work with but if you ask someone else, you'll get a different answer. I think the illustrations in this video will help you get a better idea: ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html

Glad I had something helpful to share, Kelly!
I have an Addi King and I couldn't have learned to use it without your videos. Thanks, Margaret.
Oooo... thank you, Wooly! I wish those older videos were better. (I didn't know how to edit very well back then!) I should probably make some new ones for the next generation!
Me too!!! I'm having such a great time now since I found Margaret and Sheepishly Sharing!
Thank you. One of the BEST videos I've come across yet.
What kind words to wake up to this morning! Thank you, deelynn! Glad I had something helpful to share!
I hit the ground running, messed up, slowed down and now I have much better results. Thanks for being a good teacher.
What a lovely compliment! Thank you, Paula! Glad to know I had a helpful tip or two to share!
There's definitely a learning curve. And remember that each yarn type may require different techniques! You can do it!
Thank you thank you thank you. You saved my knitting machine from the trash bin. Now i will have a lots of fun, instead of swearing and think i´m totally stupid. You are a star. Thank you again. Anna-Karin from Sweden
So glad I had a tip or two to save your machine! Ha!
l hear ya and me too but l had my hammer ready
I'm a crocheter and loom knitter, making a jump to add circular knitting machines to my crafty repertoire. Ordering both the Addi King and Addi Pro (I also do TONS of crafting for charity!) and was looking for ways to speed up what I'm doing and boost my output (more stuff getting out to where it needs to go!) Your videos are a great resource, can't wait for my machines to arrive!
So glad to know I had a tip or two to share! Have fun, Lori!
I make chemo hats. I was crocheting them, but just switched to my new addi King. A learning curve for sure. Thanks for your help.
I have exactly the same cheapy machine you used in this video. Thank you! I really need to see someone else use it and find the written instructions a real challenge. I donated 54 hats this year prior to getting the machine. I can't wait to see how many I can donate next fall.
Do you need a copy of the directions? Sentro48
Just bought myself a knitting machine and came acrossyour video after watching someone else’s on trying to show how to cast on and off and just couldn’t get it after many many attempts with out dropping on the first two rows after watching yours I finally got it on first try . Thank you ! I
Think I’m gonna enjoy this little machine after all .
Glad I had some helpful tips to share!
Maggie here from Australia , i just want to say what a terrific teacher
What a nice compliment! Thank you, Maggie!
I just started watching your videos and you are just adorable! And your videos are edited wonderfully. Great job Margaret!!
What sweet compliments to wake up to this morning! Thank you, LR! My editing has improved over the years but I'm still learning!
Thanks for your tips! I have just bought a machine and am learning how to use it. This video was easy to understand and have helped me not to give up. I like the idea of the weights and will go out for some tomorrow.
I loved the video. Great tips. I noticed when it was humid some yarns would stick. Once we put the air conditioning on, it worked great!
Thank you so much for these tips. I was doing so good 2 yrs ago. Then the pandemic and not being able to find a lot of foods. I started doing alot of food prepping. Ready to knit again, I've forgotten how having to learn allover.
Most informative video I have seen yet. I have watched over 50 videos.
You are amazing! Thank you for doing all this researh for us. I have a Knit Quick machine like the one you threw away. I've had it for three years and it's still working fine.
Thank you, Sonia! That "research" you mentioned is just all the trial and error I've done through the years!
I started on the large sentro machine and it worked perfectly right out if the box. But it DOES work better with certain yarn. The pink generic i got second and i got it to work but again the yarn matters. Finally, i did get the addi and of course it works better with all the yarn i had except the bulky yarn.
I will use your tips, I just bought one of the knitting machines just to try and make hats for children, thank you for your help.
So glad I could help! If you have any tips to share for those with challenges, let me know!
Watched several other introductory videos that were not great. I am so glad I found yours! THANK YOU!
Clever solution!

Just purchase a machine and looking around UA-cam for information on what to look for and Patterns this was very help full information. Thanks very much.
Great to hear! Have fun with your new machine!
You are so welcome!
Tell me please, which yarn do you use for sentro? Which one is the best?
Thanks for this video. I am considering buying a knitting machine in the future & enjoyed learnig some of your tips & tricks. ❤️
Whenever I am going to use my cheapy machine I use clear wide tape and can practically use it on any surface. Then I just remove tape when I am done.
Whatever. 😉
My first 2 machines should arrive today. Thank you for your videos. I feel like you’ve helped me already and I don’t even have them yet!
Good tips, Cami! Thanks!
I am the second type. I have a Sentro and I like it. Next year I will get an Addi.
Bless you! I was ready to throw my Sentro out of the window! Seriously, thank you for showing me the correct way to cast on.
You're not alone, Brianne! Every issue in this video is very common. Glad I could help!
@@margaret.olander Thanks! Will do.
Суперский ролик! Вы вдохновили меня попробовать снова после неудачи ❤️
LOL!
Glad you've got it all figured out!
Great tip, Mallori! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful in learning how to use my knitting mill
That's a great idea!
Glad I had a useful tip to share, Willow! Remember though, Addi advice can be strange... yarns preform differently for everyone!
Yes indeed, each yarn will perform differently, and I also finally got my innovations machine running. I had given up all hope for that machine, but it works with your advice you have given me, and I so appreciate it! Tension sure does help and learning how to control it. thank you again!

I realized that this was an older video when you said that the Addi machines are in the $200 range. Now in Canada they are in the $400 range! That’s why I bought the Sentro for S100!
I myself own 4 knitting machines. The Addi is THE best. Thank for this video. Love it.... couldn't say it better myself.😁

This was soooo useful. Thanks from Tasmania, Australia
Glad it was helpful!
Lol I’m a hit the ground running type...but after watching videos like this I am so glad I went with Addi in the first instance to have the best chance of initial success ..which makes you WANT to keep going!
Have FUN!!
I bought the Weaver Epoch the one you just demonstrated. It worked beautifully for me right out of the box. My first hat came out great even with 3 diffrent color yarns.
Hmmm... that's another name for the same machine! (I can't keep up!) Glad you're having fun with it!
Was just looking for a how does it work video and came across this! So informative! Thank you!
I hope the one that broke wasn't the knitting circle one as I have just brought it (starting cheap to see if I can do it)
Hi, Nigel! Make sure you watch this video before making a purchase: Addi Express FAQs, Tips, Explanations! ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html
So glad I could help! Don't be afraid to experiment... it's only yarn and can just be reused!
I had a used Brother machine but it broke before I had a chance to learn many skills. I kept meaning to get it fixed but finally gave up!
Very well explained. I'm a beginner and will be coming back to check now and then. Thanks
Glad I could be of help, Heather!
True!
Such a good video to come back to!
Thank you so much I had watched other tutorials on how to use it through UA-cam and just couldn’t get it. But your hints and tips have worked a charm I’m gonna be able to knit so many more hats for charities now 😍 in a fraction of the time !!
Glad to help, Jasmine!
Everyone needs a knitting machine. They can save a lot of time when making projects. Good luck.
Love your videos
I have the small addi express. Love it. Im going for the King Size soon. Have you tried the little cheap one that looks like a penguin. I ordered it for my niece, but I'm gonna try it first. Lol.
❤ want too say many thx I just purchased a the exact same one you did a tutorial on Awesome sauce 😎
Thank you so much I was ready to give up
THANKS this really helped. I was about to take mine back that I bought from Michael's craft store. It's the hooks and threads brand.
You are so welcome! Glad I had something helpful to share!
You had me LOL with the first sentence. I’m the third one. LOL. Thanks for this great video.
Ha! So glad I had a tip or two to help! (And that you got a smile out of it, too!)
Thank you cause I was getting frustrated. I cant wait to try your ideas.
Iv learned that for mine it liked a softer yarn
I know this video is 4 years old, but I'm just beginning on my machine. How do you change colors mid- project? I LOVE variegated yarns, but there's no control over where different colors will stop in your projects, so I'd like to use different solid colors throughout. THANK YOU!
Old videos are still current as long as the info is still relevant! In my Addi playlist there are a bunch of skill tutorials (very old video warning) and you’ll see one about how to cast on and off and how to change colors.
Addi Playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html If you’re new to the machine in general, this is a good one for the basic facts: Addi Express FAQs, Tips, Explanations! ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for making this video! It was very helpful and I’m eager to try it again.
You’re so welcome! There IS a small learning curve but once you get some experience, you’ll be great!!
I have an express when you cast on it does not run smoothlty.. Do the needles need to be changedc. Real noisy
Hi Margaret been watching your videos on UA-cam and i want one to i find knitting machine interning how they are used thanks julie.
Hahaha! You're cracking me up! With that attitude, you'll have that thing tamed in no time!
:-) Maybe it'd work better for me if I did drink. At least I wouldn't care how it turns out.
Thanks for sharing these wonderful tips 😀
You are so welcome, Ramona! Have fun!
I have just watcheed your video. Where did you get the generic machine that you liked and do you still feel it a good machine? Thanks, Sharon
Thank you for the video, very helpful tips I’ll be able to use when I get my Sentro.
So glad to know it was helpful! Have fun with it, Maryann!
Do you have to go all round the hole loom can you use half of it or go back and forth and can purl with it to
Sounds like you’re new to circular machine knitting so here’s the best place to start: ua-cam.com/video/Tq-67wstWoQ/v-deo.html
Great tips and well-done video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! And thanks for the kind words, Randi!
Im a knitter. I got an addi express king. Tried it out last night. The tension is so loose. Hence hunt for videos. Thanks for info
