But one of my best friends speaks vietnamese and we would go get our nails together all the time, people would assume that she didn't speak vietnamese. One remark was about how fat we were and how fat Americans are (mind you im a size 6-8) i forget what the other occasion was about. But she called them out on it in vietnamese lol. i'm an American born Vietnamese and I can attest that it really is like this. My parents have run a nail salon all my life and growing up I worked with them and that language barrier really does exist, more so than many may think. There were countless times where I felt like my co workers were treated poorly because they attempted to understand their customer but the customer wanted to be rude instead. I appreciate that you took the time and got to understand Lisa. It's a perspective that I believe many should be aware of.

Facts. I worked at nail salon for many years. I worked with Asians, Latinos also, and I hated when customers would talk down on my coworkers. They talk down on people who are bilingual and think they are not smart. In reality, they are extremely smart. The language barrier is definitely a thing. I remember I'd always defend my coworkers no matter what. I worked at some great places.

Fun fact: Vietnamese is what’s called an inflection language, meaning that words that sound the same can get a different meaning from a changed inflection. English uses inflection not to change meaning, but for things like adding emotion and emphasis. A lot of people native in non-inflection languages only, perceive languages like Vietnamese as rude by default for that reason.

Owner and manicurist split the cost of a service 70/30 + tips with guarantee of daily minimum wage $15/hr. Maximum hours in a day: 8 hours. Lost time for: Removing old nail polish, clients showing up late, no shows, time it takes for customers to pick a color.. people are trippin if they want a service with a full hand massage and 1 hour time for $20. Honestly…. This might sound rude… but I don’t understand some of those reviews. I don’t want my mani/pedi tech to make small talk with me. I prefer to say hello how are you and ask what I want and then sit there and relax. I like to literally lay back and enjoy having my mind go blank for a little bit. I have no problem with them speaking in another language to the nail tech next to them. I don’t feel awkward about that. And I don’t feel awkward if they’re silent. To me it’s more enjoyable. I have met some really nice nail techs who I have had great conversations with, but I think I prefer to just relax and veg/zone out during the process. My brain needs that.

Lisa makes a good point. Most Americans aren’t well-versed with the many Asian languages and dialects. They do tend to put emphasis on and stress inflection differently than American dialects. Just because a culture is different than yours, does not make it any less deserving of respect. Perhaps the customers here get what they put out, as seen with Taj and his quite lovely experience.

Anja Cullen You’d know by virtue of the fact that the average person will exploit every advantage you allow them.
In any event, Lisa actually explains what much of that perception is about. The issue to her wasn’t really the different language. Vietnamese, like many other East Asian languages, varies its tone to change the meaning. English speakers use the same to express emotions. This means that they can sound angry, sarcastic, taunting or whatever while actually talking about something boring. If you spoke like that in English you’d make some enemies.
That said, many of those reviewers likely earned the gossip that likely did occur. From what some technicians tell me, certain Salon clientele are very entitled and come with hostility, unrealistic demands, and a willingness to scam employees for free services.

That she was entirely honest and upfront is a real credit to her. Achieving success in any kind of a business in Beverly Hills is notoriously difficult and the fact that her nail salon has managed to remain in business for so many years is astounding, particularly with a staff with such language barriers. I definitely hope you took the time to leave your own review and hopefully this video can also result in a few more customers giving them an opportunity to prove their quality and value.

I feel like with a camera crew in the salon the experience is obviously going to be a bit different (no crap talking, patience, effort levels, niceness and politeness of staff etc) so I don’t feel like this is a fair representation of what they’re like or how they operate on a normal business as usual day, but hey, in this video everyone did seem nice and put in effort etc

I do feel like if you go to a salon run and worked by Vietnamese ladies that them talking to eachother in Vietnamese is 100% fine and acceptable. If people don’t understand the language and feel uncomfortable they don’t have to go there. These ladies don’t have to speak in their second language to one another just to make you feel less insecure, they’re just communicating with eachother in their native language and that’s more efficient for them. If you want to go to a salon where everyone speaks English that’s totally cool! But I think shaming someone for communicating with their peers, who all speak the same language as them, for efficiency sake is kinda mean :/ and tbh if you didn’t understand the language how would you know they’re talking rude about you? You can’t just assume, and I think a lot of the time it’s a projection of someone’s own insecurities because they don’t understand and human beings naturally have a fear of things they can’t understand and usually assume the worst. Just my two cents 🥺

I come from a family of Vietnamese refugees and almost all of my mom and her siblings had their own nail salons. My mom faced not only the same challenges that this nail salon did, but a few others, like working all alone in the salon while the liquor store next store was constantly robbed, fearing she could be next. But she did not have the luxury at the time to just quit. She had a family to support. When my family worked our way to be able to let her sell her shop, it was a relief. Even though her shop was closed, we've had some of our closest friends come from that shop. To this day, they remain close friends of our family. I'm first generation Vietnamese-American and I am so proud of our family's humble background. This video definitely is a reminder of the hard work of not only my mom, but the rest of our family who owned nail salons. It was a vehicle to get our seeds planted here in America and to create a better life for ourselves.

Okay, but at no point should it be painful or damage your natural nail. The nail techs were going over the nail with an electric drill which caused a burning sensation, that's extremely bad. Even if the place is cheap it should not harm it's customers like that at any point

As a licensed nail tech I can tell you that the electric file should NEVER burn! The second you feel any kind of heat the nerves under your nail plate have already been damaged past the point of return. And really e files shouldn't be used on natural nails....it kills me.

The drills not being used on natural nails, in my opinion, should be true! After removing my gel polish, if I don't go back in to get it redone right away, my natural nails are scratchy, thin and break easily due to the over sanding they do prior to gel polish. I'm now trying to grow out the damage from my recent gel polish experience at the beginning of September.

awww! ☺️ they’re so sweet! once in a while i go the nail salon with my mother and while she gets her nails FULLY done, i usually just get a very simple bare bones manicure (no polish) and sometimes a 30min massage as well because most salons where i live do massages as well, and the petite Asian nail techs have some insane strength, i have no idea how they do it haha! regardless of what specific nationality of Asians work in each nail salon, they’re ALWAYS so nice and warm and welcoming no matter which salon i go to. i wish everyone like them! 😆

he was always "cool".. you cant pull of what he does unless you know yourself and exactly what you're doing. someone can be weird and cool at the same time. i think you're just becoming more tolerant of people you dont understand. so good for you, but maybe try to stop judging people for their looks and surface personality quirks. start judging them by how they treat people and what they contribute to the world. :)
