Why certain naturally occurring wildfires are necessary - Jim Schulz

Our early ancestors relied on lightning to cause forest fires, from which they could collect coals and burning sticks to help them cook food and clear land. Yet, it wasn’t just humans who benefited from these natural phenomena. Even as they destroyed trees, fires also helped the forests themselves. Jim Schulz outlines the benefits of wildfire.

Many, many more small fires needed to help prevent the catastrophic million acre+ ones. There is a huge backlog of wildfire fuel due to decades of fire suppression with overharvesting (logging) and heavy replanting, then very limited logging and continued fire suppression. In the summer, most forests are like giant piles of tinder these days, so great care must be taken with reintroducing fire.
Animation is just too good and the way they ended the video by comparing it to phoenix was superb one
My tree drops so many of those Serotinous Cones, I always thought they were Pine cones that dropped early.
I have seen controlled forest fire in India .... Believe me it becomes really hot in the surroundings .... I felt the change in the temperature while driving with AC on
مقطع جميل، شكرًا للمترجمة فاطمة والمدقّقة غالية تركي❤️
California and Amazonians needs to watch this video
Those forests are dominated by a different species of trees
A rainforest isn't always going to be wet, people. Droughts do occur. Rain forest have burned before. Sometimes fire is good for new plant growth.
The issue is people setting them intentionally without a prescribed burn plan to control it. They just set it and cause a wildfire which is uncontained... no firebreaks to stop the burn. People do the same thing here in the US at times.
Australian Aboriginals were well known to be great caretakers of "their" local land, deliberately lighting fires to promote new growth and clear up "fire-fodder", and also to flush out the odd meal. Do you know what went wrong last year in Aus? Someone in Western Aus. dictated to officials in Victoria to produce a controlled burn, even when those officials stated the conditions were too dry, hot and windy. Major bush-fire resulted in loss of life, animals, livelihood, homes, etc. because of ONE man on the OTHER side of the country. He didn't personally know the area, or care about it either, or listen to those who did. Aboriginals did it better.
That is why,I like ancient Indian philosophy "अंतः अस्ति प्रारंभः।"
How bless the humans and animals that lost their lives in the 2020 Australian Wildfires
The light tone of voice and the wonderful animation made me much more interested :)
Just so people aren’t confused, the “good” fires they’re talking about are much different from the ones caused by the lack of them, the ones that are destroying people’s lives.

It means everything have something positive 😊
I learned this a while back from a movie called The Future is Wild.
That show was awesome. We need a reboot.
the animation is everything
3 years old and it pops up on my feed when the Amazon is burning
Nature is such a legend
that being said, dont think it would be impossible to change the ecosystem to make wildfire unnecessary. it just wont happen until we understand how to control it better. much in the same way that eventually we will be able to control the weather. non of which should be rushed.
Here watching the video while amazon is burning now

what about tropical forest can you explain that
In this video, they should specify this occurs in conifers forests, and only when the wildfire occurs naturally (not provoked by humans) and the ecosystem is not fragmented by human activity or damaged by introduced or invasive species
I don't think the trees in Australia are anywhere's near related to conifers. We also have historical records pointing to fires in the tropics for as long as the earth has been alive. Although not as large nor as frequently.
Yes, But it's not a great idea in Australia where poor Koalas have become on verge of extinction due to uncontrolled bushfires!!..😔😔😔😔
watching this again because of the wildfire in Alberta
Those trees evolved that ability.
Problem with YT algorithm is this: people think old news as latest news and talk over it
Just remember this not apply to rain forests
I Love You Ted-ed....
what kind of app do they did this video? It's so amazing!! I want to know what app because I maybe can use it to do my school project.. Ted ed really helps me a lot!
*amazon rain forest has entered the chat*
it also gets rid of any invasive species of plants that haven't adapted to this type of ecosystem
Gavin J not always, in California it's actually invasive grasses that are resulting in more fires. Chapparals aren't fire dependent but they're being replaced by non-native grass that are
Now governments of various countries have to pay enough attention and invest resources for effective management of forest fires. Governments of middle East countries need to spend lots of money for growing forests.
3 years later and the Amazon is burning down...
This is how we clean forests, not by sweeping the ground
*The Amazon rain forest has lest the chat*
Yeah, like what most commenters have said, pine tree forest depend on these forest fire, therefore they can easily get back, while rain forests are more resistant to forest fires but once on fire, they can have a hard time to return to normal or sometimes never at all.
I don't think its the right time to show this in my recommendations
The amazon rainforest fire:
Am I a joke to you?
Funny how this is suddenly recommended during the amazon fire, which is an artificial forest fire.
Can you make a video about 'back fires' in relation to the Bundy family and the decision to consider this an act of terrorism? Thanks
In this example under the mentioned conditions this is probably true. In case there are large animals grazing the canopy (dinosaurs, giraffe, elephant, mammoet) it would probably be a lot less necessary. Also its only the case where the plants have a defense against fires like the pines in this video.
For other systems it is probably more damaging then good. Look at the forest fires in indonesia to create palmtree plantations which leave a grassy desert (see TedX Willie Smits). Or fires in arid grasslands or tropical forest that can trigger or fasten desertification. Germination of most seeds does not need to be triggered by fire but can be triggered by passing through the digestive tract of animals. In some cases increasing grazing in a certain way can battle desertification (see TedX Allan Savory). Also very important is a healthy ecosystem within the ground as the availability of the right bacteria and fungee can either give a huge boost or even be essential (see the mentioned TedX talks and the TedX Teen talk of Ciara Judge).

i dont know, why all theories pointed to lightning as the main source of how fire was discovered, when forest-fire is most close to human to discover... No one in the past have thought, "oh it's raining, there must be some fire i cud gather".. 😅
It takes a long time to grow a tree especially a Rain Forest. Pak Hed. Include the animals who lives there. Pak Hed.
Ah yes, and this phenomenon that is the forest fire-tree relationship came about randomly.
Me before the video: Calm about wildfires
Me after: BURN BURN BURN
What causes the “productive” wildfires to naturally die out and not continue to spread?
VERY interesting
Would it be somewhat of a good idea to cut the large trees down, (leaving the pine cones of course) and then burning it down? The trees will be burned anyways, why not get some lumber out of it?

Guys, for christ's sake, the Amazon is a tropical forest, different from the one in this video. There aren't coniferas in the amazon, for example, and the weather is too humid for it to catch fire naturally.
It's a man made fire to illegally create space for the agribusiness' corn and soy culture.
False. Here in the Southeast...it can be very humid and we have several big wildfires. Why? Because of the vegetation we have is very oily.

Fun fact. The ash created by these fires is also used as a natural super fertiliser for the next generation.
This video was three years ago and youtube recommend this now while the Amazon forest was on fire.
Nice.
Came here because of the devastating news regarding the 16-day forest fire in our dear Amazon forest. And the media didn't notify the public for almost 3 weeks. Sad news.
But the amazon doesn't naturally burn like californian forests. The trees are different, the weather more humid and the soil isn't as fertile, due to heavy rains. It's a man-made fire, in ecological and indigenous preservation parks, by the agrobusiness men to illegally create space for the soy and corn culture.
@@mulungu6478 I'm not sure and I can't trace back where I saw it, but I think I came across a post stating/warning people that a portion of the Amazon was going to be cleared out for exactly those agricultural purposes. It didn't happen yet during that time so it didn't reach a large audience (or no one really made a move and took the warning seriously). And I think it was partly because most of us were skeptical if it was really true and "they" were really going to go through with it because it was _the Amazon! They can't be serious!_ But I guess soy and corn truly are in large demand today that burning the Amazon was "necessary".
The cherry on top of it is that our president says environmental NGOs started the fire because of the cut in budgets to protect de Amazon rainforest..
@@mulungu6478 agree. And the president itself personally admitted that he wanted to burn Amazon forest.
Glicia Peclat wow thanks for spreading lies and misinformation on every comment
No, this doesn't apply to the Amazon fires. Note how at 3:50 they clearly reference BOREAL forests. A rainforest like the Amazon is a completely diferent ecosystem, not to mention the danger posed to the indigenous tribes.
why is it alive today if it's been burning since time long before humans even existed? by your logic there shouldn't be amazon rainforest today, it simply wouldn't exist
Also one thing you didn't mention:
In Australia lives a plant called the Banksia, named after Joseph Banks, one of Captain Cook's men. Their seeds are unable to burst open unless exposed to heat of wildfires, and cannot bloom for the same reason.
We didn't start the fire!
It was always burning, since the world been turning!

How are the seeds not oven-roasted in those temperatures?
Harry Wu
-seeds have spread out before hot temperature sets in
-Seeds have seed coat which protects them
-Some do get burnt up
-Some seeds come from outside part of forest
In a crown fire, that is true. They would be totally consumed. The cones and seeds do not survive a stand-replacing, crown fires the seeds are not lofted into the air. This is an error in this presentation.
Serotinous cones need a ground fire to pop the seeds open. A ground fire burns the undergrowth and debris on the forest floor. The temperature at the crown/cone level reaches that magical temperature which pops the cones. After the relatively low intensity fire clears the undergrowth and the old debris, a new mineral rich soil is available for seeds. The heat from a ground fire also kills some of the upper needles allowing more sunlight through.
Overall a good presentation, but it has some errors in it.
