I LOVE a good feta. And yes, it must be made with sheep's milk, and in a block. Preferably in brine.
As a Greek I can confirm testing feta abroad it didn't taste the same. Best brand in Greece is one called Feta Valmas, i don't know if exports but if it does get the feta aged in in a wooden berol.
Dodoni is also good.
in Greece you expect a good price for feta around 8 to 9€/kilo ~ 5$ per pound. Considering that exporting cost you should not see cheaper than this price in a super market. if you see something is wrong.
I buy Mt Vikos barrel aged feta from Amazon Fresh. It is delicious.
Love videos like this that are short and to the point! More Jack Bishop!
In order to be called FETA it must come from specific regions of Greece, made from sheep’s milk or a ratio of 70 % sheep’s milk and 30% goat’s milk. Sadly, there are even better cheeses that vary from region to region that are lesser known and aren’t exported for other reasons .So FETA is a cheese originating from certain areas of Greece and is protected by name. Industrial feta is made for exporting and everything else is a version of this specific cheese.
Fun fact: if the ingredients says "milk", that's cow's milk. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷
Thanks Jack! Always look forward to your quick, informative videos!
I always love learning from Jack Bishop, it sure makes a difference in my meals.
Love Jack's videos; so informative and helpful.
Well, I've gotten used to the older vids that had more info, & although it's lacking in comparison, it's ok. The whole cast is fun & love their tips
I married a Greek, so yes real feta is so much better, and there is more than just green and black olives, get an education on them from a Greek and you will be happy.
Yes! Thank you and greetings from Europe.
Happy holidays to you and yours
Excellent video !!! 👍
♥️Jack and his experience
Good luck finding a block of feta cheese after that pasta recipe went viral 😂
The prices of the winning products in Cooks Illustrated taste tests spike fairly often, too.
This is a fave cheese of mine thanks for sharing it.😘😊
Excellent Video!
Dodoni feta cheese which he shows but does not name is excellent.
The best!
I have to find it now.
I bought Turkish Feta once, it was excellent and I am big fan of anything Greek.
How much do the big beautiful blocks cost.
Imagine buying Greek-made bourbon. The thought is heresy. So US-made Feta is equally a no-no. I find in my local supermarket imitation Feta is called "Greek-style salad cheese", which at least shows a sense of shame.
It's nice to see the perspective from someone from Europe on this issue.
I usually buy Bulgarian. It's a little more forward than the Greek or French.
I absolutely love salty bland domestic feta. Ha ha But I agree, get blocks instead of pre-crumbled.
typical American!
@@docholliday4546 Yup!
big fan of Valbreso feta at the market but I think it's French feta
I married a Greek and nothing is like the real stuff. You'll never get true feta in a grocery store. You have to get it at a specialty store that imports big blocks of it.
Imported Greek olive oil is same way, as well.
Hi Brett. Understood, but you do realise that the subject line had "grocery store" in it. Regards.
You can get the real deal at Costco. I can’t go back to the other stuff.
Fortunately you are dead wrong.
Not sure if you were replying to me or the main post. For Costco, they have varied brands, but Sheep milk, EU stamps, real rennet, in the brine and imported from Greece. Like many things at Costco it can come and go, but luckily has stuck for awhile here in Albuquerque.
Greek Olive Oil is noting compared to middle eastern ones. Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine produce far better olive oil
Once you eat real, proper feta, the popcorn ceiling material that other brands sell will never be in your fridge again.
What about brine or no brine? I find the brine keeps longer, but I didn't know if there was implications to that to flavor or any other considerations.
Brine!! Keeps the flavor and keeps it from changing texture.
Maybe I haven't had good *"Greek"* feta... I usually stick with the bulgarian option.
“What are we gonna do? We’re gonna respect tradition” 😂
Off to Cyprus next week to have the real thing.. 🧀
Opa
Wish I could find some.
It's pretty easy to mail order Greek feta,
- unless you live in a more isolated country? I get fresh salmon sent to the USA from the Faroe Islands, it's so fresh and amazing when it arrives - always well packed. You can pretty much get anything these days.
@@suzannes5888 I know but I am just not a fan of mail order groceries. 😅
👎
Costco has the real deal.
In Canada we have Salerno feta cheese made with goat milk. Its the best.
And NOWHERE are we told how/where to ontain this 'holy grail' of Feta? Interesting.
@@sandrah7512 Oh. I knew that. NOT lmsbo!🤣
Guess I missed that link, and thank you very much✨🤗✨.
My mother is 70 years old and she has it in her head that she doesn't like feta because "it tastes like vomit". I haven't been able to convince her try a decent feta.
could always sneak a piece of cheese if she likes cheese and crackers
If Jack says buy in blocks...I'm gonna buy in blocks from now on. Nuff said🤓
The cheese referred to in the Odyssey may not have been similar to feta as Homer made no mention of brining the cheese, in fact the cyclops ages the cheese on a rack. Perhaps a similar product did exist at the time but for all we know the cheese in the Odyssey was a hard aged cheese (no brine) made from sheep's milk.
Kasseri, perhaps?
Every thing about clotted cream
Please
😊💫

I always get French Feta from my local import store, I heard it's saltier
So what’s the best feta in the supermarket!?!
Thanks, @@sandrah7512! It’s a brand called Real Greek Feta.
Usually you can’t access their articles without a membership, but you can this time. Still think they should’ve answered the question in the video if they made it the title.
True
I found some Feta in the dumpster along while back and it was delicious!
Which feta is NOT sharp? I want the mild and creamy kind. TIA. 🙂
The best feta is Bulgarian feta Jack. Thankyouverymuch. America’s Test Kitchen’s got some homework to do. Bulgarian feta gets exported to Greece, repackaged and shipped around the world, branded as Greek feta. Ask anybody.
Where I am in FL, only reasonably priced & good!! is Vigo which only comes in brine & block. The rest is 😝😝
I bought mine from Costco, imported from Greece and it is our favorite! Btw I live in Fl as well 😊
@@user-no2bp4mn5i yes. Vigo is also imported from Greece 👍🎄💖
Not in Greece they do in country Turkey just surcharge and find out
I’ve tried to like feta cheese. Just couldn’t stomach the taste or smell.
The domestic stuff is good and salty; not funky at all. I prefer it. Much to Mr. Bishop's chagrin. lol
Good fresh feta is not supposed to smell or have weird taste. It’s a fresh type of cheese that is eaten at its freshest, in salads or it is being cooked with and put in pastries. It has a clean milky taste that is salty. It is not supposed to stay in the fridge for too long, whether covered or vacuumed or in brine. You must have been eating the bad stuff.
And get some mortadella to go with it.
sheep's milk in a block!!!
This was a very brief introduction to the feta cheese on the market of some other country - I'm guessing the US. For the few things that were said about the cheese this man was correct. For some reason unknown to me feta cheese and greek yogurt have not been successfully copied outside Greece. 🤨
I prefer Bulgarian "feta"
The Greeks really take take their feta cheese making making seriously! Do you remember the old saying?? Do you know how they separate the men from the boys in Greece?? With a crowbar
Yes, buy the real deal. It’s Bulgarian… (yes, you heard me, you Greeks are just southern Bulgarian 🤣)
Usually Jack shows several brands of the same product & shows us the brand winner. This presentation lacked information. At least show us the brand of the winner & tell us where in America to find it... Be specific! 🙄
Guessing that anything you can find that is imported from Greece is good. You'd probably have to go to a higher-end grocery store to find the imports.
Mediterranean specialty foods stores usually import Bulgarian feta. Shouldn’t be a problem to find it there. There is also Bulgarian feta made from cow’s milk, as well as sheep’s, but yes, sheep’s milk is the authentic taste stuff. There is also one type named Dunavya cheese - it’s a bit different. The French fetas are softer, generally creamier cheeses. (Obviously, the French are known for liking buttery textures.)
Dodoni feta cheese which he shows but does not name is excellent.
@@AirrowRocket My hero, thx 🦸♂️. Yeah I miss Jack's full panel tests & naming the winner. About the only thing better than that would be for him to name at least 2 top brands & where purchased 🙏
@@mariawinter2535 I purchase a tub of Dodoni at the cheese section of Shop Rite but it is available at other supermarkets. Be careful when you open it. It is filled to the top with brine so don't hold it against you or you'll be wearing it. It is an excellent cheese. It's the red, white and blue tub in the video.
The only feta I buy is hand made from the milk of pygmy albino sheep raised in Tunisia by nomadic Romani. I fly there 2-3x a year to stock up. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive than the premium brand ATK likes, but who in their right mind would ever buy supermarket feta to feed to their family???
Hopefully you use your vacuum-sealed refrigerated chamber that maintains a precise 3.2 degrees celsius to transport it back home. lol
@@aaron74 Of course, but it's actually nitrogen-filled. I mean, doesn't everyone have one? Maybe we can get ATK to do a review someday.
These cheese brands are very average. Buy Bulgarian cheese.

Opinions/preferences
Are like
Limburger cheese.
They all stink
I am scared of things... Cheeses, meats, wines, vinegar, oils, fruits, veggies... If they smell or taste funky or off, I will not eat them. If I had some training from ATK/CC/CI, I might be apt to try things... Hint, hint.
Teeth too white. Yikes 😬
