“Up” is a masterpiece. The leitmotif throughout is incredible. And it is one of the greatest openings to a movie ever. The thematic material in those first 10 minutes carries the whole film.
I feel like people over praise Up for it’s opening, overall it’s really nothing special, but those first 10 minutes are great, just people praise the film too much because of the opening, but I always respect an Up enjoyer, it’s just nothing spectacular for me
I love Charles' ability to make everything about music sound so important and amazing. It really makes you appreciate all the little things us composers and musicians do.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but in the motif at the beginning of the theme when Remy begins to fix the soup - when he begins the process of creating - the three dominant repeating tones of the melody are the same as the three dominant repeating tones in the motif at the beginning of Le Festin (the theme that occurs when a creation is complete). However, in the cooking scene, the tones are in a minor key (if it is in the key of G, the third tone will be a b-flat) and ascend upward from g to b-flat, whereas Le Festin puts it in a major key and the tones descend from b to g. They are mirror images of each other. One is simply the beginning of the 'creative process' while the other is the end.
Ratatouille Is Easily By FAR My Favorite Movie EVER, And The Songs Are Absolutely WONDERFUL, Absolute MASTERPIECES, EXTREMELY Well Written, The Songs Literally Tells You The Story, Absolutely PHENOMENAL.
As a visual artist I can visualize the Rat-Like scurrying throughout the music and the difference of Chef Skinner's threatening and paranoid scurry sound compared to Remy's inquisitive and determined scurry AND it switches sometimes when Remy acts more Rat-Like and strays from his dream. Ratatouille is truly a Magnum Opus for all the Arts.
Excellent point about the voicing of string instruments. The way I learned to be sure I was in tune on my violin (I don’t have perfect pitch) was to listen for it to ring. The whole instrument will ring if you are in tune while you play.
Incredible soundtrack. Disney/Pixar always has great music even when the lyrics aren’t great nowadays. I kinda wanna see you react to a KyotoAnimation show. KyoAni has a few shows about music.

I absolutely love the soundtrack for Ratatouille! I had the PS2 and DS game and I spent many hours listening to the beautiful score while playing those games.
Thank you so much for this! The emotional storytelling in this soundtrack is so amazing and does so much in the film, especially in establishing a setting. You rock!

7:00 it kind of reminds me of the finale of the Firebird (Stravinsky), but at the same time i know that they only thing they vaguely share is the concept of ascending strings + lower wind+brass
Ratatouille is (imo) the best Disney movie. When you realize all of the imagery and symbolism surrounding each character just and situation they’re in just makes it amazing.
I feel like Giacchino's work in LOST often gets passed over. It is another example of fantastic use of lietmotif and how a single melodic line can be used in diverse and unexpected ways. I wish the show lived up to his work. The ending of that show was not the greatest.
And yet I feel Giacchino is still under appreciated compared to other top composers, but I absolutely love his scores and they are so recognisable as his music despite the thematic material between certain films being so different.

Costa del Sol with Tito Puente's Oye Como Va, New Wave Bossa Nova with Girl From Ipanema or perhaps something like DDR's Kind Lady which might have been inspired by Western pop (Edwyn Collins A Grul Like You) or how The Consouls and Pat Bartley have turned Rosalina's Comet Observatory into a beautiful jazz standard.

While I agree that this score was fantasically written, I also want to point out that this was a fantastic performance. A composer can write a seamless transition of the melody from one instrument to another, but not all orchestras can accurately or seamlessly do it as heard here. Huge props to the musicians.
The fact that you can break music down, but not take away from it at all, is fascinating. It never feels like it's over-analyzed to the point it's no longer fascinating. I don't think that the scores for Jurassic world 2 and 3 do anything particularly interesting but the score for Jurassic world is beautiful. Brilliant composition
Not the video or topic I was expecting! Love nearly everything Giacchino's done, that soundtrack to The Lost World PS1 has to be one of my earliest memories of full orchestral music - especially for a game 👌
I love watching you experience the music the first time through. It's very simular to how I listen to sound tracks either during a movie or listening after the first time.
I have had the ratatouille soundtrack in my head for the last few weeks. I found myself gaping in awe actually delving in and singularly listening to it. I knew it was only a matter of time until Charles talked about it!
UP" is amazing OST, i consider it the masterpiece. Have a listen to the original Medal of Honor games for PlayStation 1. They maybe game OST but jeez is every single one of the tracks amazing.
Ratatouille might be my favorite Pixar film. It inspired my love of French history, culture, and language. And having been around the country of France, I love it. This soundtrack is one of the most inspiring in the matter of love. It is a ballad of love. I absolutely love your videos breaking down soundtracks.
I wouldn't have thought to give this OST a listen had you not covered it, so thanks for doing so! On another note, my favorite work from Giacchino is his score of Spider-Man: No Way Home, specifically the use of (SPOILERS) his theme for Aunt May's death and how he later turns it into a heroic version to represent Peter's sacrifice in response. (He also references "The Real Hero" by Alan Silvestri from Avengers: Endgame, which makes for a really nice touch as Peter is about to make his sacrifice.) If you wanna check this one out, I recommend "Exit Through the Lobby" and "Forget Me Knots" (this one also uses "The Real Hero" in a powerful way) primarily. They're the two tracks that most heavily represent what I'm talking about. If you want a piece that further exemplifies the transformation of the theme, listen to the suite "Arachnoventure" and pay attention to the way the theme is overlaid on the Spider-Man theme Giacchino wrote for Homecoming. If you feel up to it, I'd also love to hear you go over the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack or anything from The Legend of Zelda series. Thanks for doing this! I love your content!
you’re one of the people i respect the most. like fr your knowledge and wisdom regarding music is incredible and we need more people with your passion using their talents cause you’re a musical genius (mind you i don’t know much music theory at all but been playing piano for 4 years. self taught)
Hey Charles, I just realized how amazing some of the Cyberpunk 2077 Score is!!! Even though you would never expect such beautiful and melancholic harmonies with this type of music. Defenitely check out the “Outsider No More“ by P.T. Adamczyk. Love your videos ;)
I never thought that there would be anything better than Open Studio, but Charles is ahead. Long-term studying and practising, OK, but the ability to perform like him is a gift, I‘m quite shure. Maybe it is also so good and entertaining because he talks about so many genres, and not the easiest music. There is a lot of overall knowledge shining through. And - man - that hearing without perfect pitch is phenomenal.
One artist I'd love to see you react to is Cody Fry, I particularly love his rendition of Eleanor Rigby and his original compositions- Caves/Underground. Many thanks from the UK.
Charles’ enthusiasm in every video never fails to cheer me up. It’s so wholesome. I may not always know what he’s talking about, but you bet I’m engaged in it nonetheless.

Giacchino's use of leitmotif throughout the entire score is simply magnificent.
he does that a lot in his scores. Lost is another nice example.
One of the few who still does. Most others try to be Hans Zimmer. For some reason.

I don't think that the scores for Jurassic world 2 and 3 do anything particularly interesting but the score for Jurassic world is beautiful. Brilliant composition
Love how in The Paper Chase there's a call to the Incredibles at 9:51 in the low brass
I am here to request The Prince of Egypt, Hans Zimmer’s finest work in my humble opinion.

You should do Medal OF Honor: Vangaured by Michael Giacchino. It is one of my favorite compasitions by Michael and is worth checking out!!
Ooh, I played arrangements of 4 tracks of MoH with a wind orchestra, and it's sooo much fun!
Whoever can’t tell that this guy doesn’t love music is blind in every way. Cheers to this man😂🍻
Finally this masterpiece is getting some recognition :)
(He also references "The Real Hero" by Alan Silvestri from Avengers: Endgame, which makes for a really nice touch as Peter is about to make his sacrifice.)
If you wanna check this one out, I recommend "Exit Through the Lobby" and "Forget Me Knots" (this one also uses "The Real Hero" in a powerful way) primarily.

Hey Charles,
I just realized how amazing some of the Cyberpunk 2077 Score is!!!
Many thanks from the UK.
aw yes!!!
Not only do you get to hear an absolutely perfect score, but with the best musical play-by play broadcaster ever recorded on video!
Charles’ enthusiasm in every video never fails to cheer me up. It’s so wholesome. I may not always know what he’s talking about, but you bet I’m engaged in it nonetheless.

These songs are good, but my personal favorite is a new deal. The amazing pizzicato on the basses and you can hear Remy slowly warming up and the progression of their relationship through the music.
