- The Biden administration announced its latest round of student debt relief Wednesday. More than $6 billion will be canceled for 317,000 borrowers who enrolled at any Art Institutes campus between 2004 and 2017. CBS News reporter Haley Ott has more.

I went to the Art Institutes. The Art Institutes were a scam school. Their lessons were out of date and teachers told us to watch UA-cam to learn, they even forced students to grade other students work or they would be failed. Their employment statistics were outright lies and earning potential was straight lies. Their counselors were salesmen, not people who cared. They 100% deserved to have their schools closed down and everyone's payments refunded. They were sued multiple times for years. Our government, both parties, knew this garbage was going on for a long time and never did a damn thing about it.

Exactly. I also graduated out of the Art institute in 2021. I applied in July 2017, and just made the cutoff. My friend who applied after October 2017 did not make the cut off. She did not have her loans forgiven. But just because the schools transitioned from for-profit to non-profit doesn't mean that the school was still a scam after! She got just about as much as I did from the school as she did. And for her to be left out because of the transition, I hope that she gets her loans forgiven too. Out of our friend group she's the one who needed it most. Furthermore, none of my friends from the Art institute are working any industry jobs. There were no job connections at that place. They hired graduated students as teachers with no industry experience. On the school and digital because of covid, the education was non-existent. Senior year was supposed to be for portfolio reviews and hands-on experience with the pipeline, and because covid happened, I got none of that, not even an attempt to try. They just wanted to take my money and get me out of there. Luckily, when the school went down last year, I got to swipe some free stuff, and that free stuff is the most at school ever did for me, well besides my friends I guess
And we never quit. We students kept fighting for this. You're welcome. Still more of a fight to go. Fraud Private loans need to be cancelled and the FFELP loans need to be refunded.
First off, art school isnt the scam, its universities. Charlie Kirk has been explaining this for a while. Why do you think democrats get so worked up and upset they have him on campus? The same reason they use talking points to get the students upset that Charlie goes to campuses. These schools are democrat and only teach kids to be dependent on the government. For example, yall want the government to bail you out. Yall knew the tuition and didnt have the money to pay it. You hoped one day you would have the money to repay it. That isnt how life works. Dont believe me? Look back at 2008. Broke the middle class, kept the middle class from becoming successful and sent a lot into poverty. But the banks and government weren't affected. Just like in this situation. But the Universities took the place of banks.

it was a lawsuit. Biden had nothing to do with this at all. CBS is using this schools lawsuit to try and give Biden credit and seem like "look he's forgiving our debt!" when that's not at all what happened.

Congratulations! My coworker told me that she was just notified that she got her student loan forgiven. She went to a technical college for medical coding and billing and they never told the students that the institution lost its accreditation.
Idk. I went there too, was able to pay off my dept, and move on with my life. Not sure what went wrong for so many student that they never paid off their dept 😮
Me too I'm Super excited cause I paid wayyy too much to go there. Tuition was super expensive and I still end up paying for my books and everything. I hope to get a refund on actual payments that were being garnish out my job. That email I got last night felt great

The Art Institute is one of the great museums in America, and their art school is world famous. To reduce it to "basket weaving" is flippant and ill-informed.
I was a former student myself. It was all a scam.
If we got back to taxing the top bracket again, then nobody would raise an eyebrow on any of this as we'd be so far in the black that we'd actually look like we're doing something right

We used to tax them (comfortably) so much more than we do now and we accomplished so much across the country (roads, etc) back then. Plus, without a degree, it's hard to get a good job. Min wage jobs choose between rent and food, except with a student loan. I've actually had loan collectors recommend that I sell drugs, or become a prostitute. My loans were small, but I worked two full time jobs for over a decade to pay them off, and rented a room, never could get ahead. My health suffers to this day. I'm so happy your life has been so easy, but you should not make assumptions about other people.

Who the hell is the supreme Court to decide what amount of money is too much or too little for a policy decision. THEY need to stay in their own lane.
I graduated from the school with excellent grades. They falsified information on salary and job prospects. Unfortunately, this isn't the only college that does this; from what I can tell, most colleges do this to some degree. It should be addressed, and it should be considered illegal. We need limits on how much these institutions can charge people. Colleges are taking advantage of students and their families.
Another thing to remember when they discharge all of this debt this will be stimulating the economy because the student will have money to participate in everyday things like buying a home or maybe taking a vacation.

If we are in a free country, shouldn't it be our choice how we want to give back to our neighbor and not the government to make that decision? I’m sure the majority of those students were “middle class” until they were scammed. The middle class just grew by 317,000 and you didn’t lose a dollar to pay for it considering all government spending is fake money anyway. Thats not how it worked. The govt guarenteed the loads, but no money went from taxes to students. Students could not write off loads even if they went bankrupt (LIke Trump did). More money has come from the government investeigating predatory/scam lenders and schools. Forgiving the loans mean that the banks stop bleeding people dry. Don't believe the fear mongers. Why should student loan banks not have to follow the law?

Various Ai campuses closed while classes were still in session. Some of the students weren't aware until they went to attend classes and they saw notices on the door.

I graduated from an Art School as well. Not one of the institutes mentioned but still the loan repayments is ridiculous. Biden needs to keep pushing for those of us forced to pay these absurd monthly amounts for higher education.
The problem with the Art Institutes was even if you wanted to transfer credits they were useless. I tried to finish my degree and NONE of my 3.5 yrs of credits counted so it was just a waste of time

Americans have become,, for the most part, irresponsible in their decision making, and expect the Government to bail them out for poor decisions. If a mortgage company loans me money, and I dont pay, they take my home. They take my car if I dont pay an auto loan. Nobody forced people to sign for student loans. Many people pay the loans back. The days of seeing consequences for poor decisions is long gone.

I got a question 🙋♂️ who is paying for all this? Student loans are the #1 asset for the US government. My guess: low to middle income taxpayers will take the hit through inflation and taxes. How about we cut spending or cut tax loopholes BEFORE increasing government liabilities even more. In my personal life I’d never consider taking on more debt before either cutting spending or increasing my income.

Seems there might be a happy medium somehow. I had humungous loans offered to me on a silver platter at Boise State when I was there, but my gut instinct was not to borrow any more than what I absolutely needed. That strategy proved sound in the long run. I don't owe anybody anything. That being said, there were probably millions of students not so experienced or lucky that they took out giant loans. Those loans were predatory. It is those kinds of loans for which people could use a break. Should they be completely absolved? I'm not so sure. Who pays? Whose backs does this land on? The schools are complicit, the students after all borrowed to go to school, the taxpayers are just trying to survive.

Any decision that benefits Americans, costs the government money and is made by the sitting president who happens to also be soon up for re-election, is in essence the president paying for votes. Most presidents if not all as obvious have done this or at least tried to.
One of the most obvious to do it(as you could've probably guessed) was Pres. Trump. Who specifically wanted his name printed on the stimulus checks that were sent out in the time before the election. Literally sending 150 million Americans checks with his name on it, as if he had suggested the stimulus check idea himself. When it worked and he jumped up in the polls he took it even further and tried to raise the second stimulus check from 600 to 2000, but that was blocked by the GOP.
It begs the question if Pres. Trump would've pushed for more than tripling the amount of the stimulus check if it had been deemed necessary during a time when the election wasn't coming up. We'll never know the answer to that question, but if even his own party isn't on board, that should tell you a thing or two.

@@chillwill5080 That and public funding of education has been steadily reduced over the past few decades, resulting in the need for students to take out loans as previous generations earnings aren't enough to keep up with inflation since real wage growth is *maybe* 3% to 5% per year. But the cost of education has increased by just over 20 times since 1963.
Basically, everyone in America cries, "Education is the future, it's for our children! Save our children!" Then you get Qanons spouting, "Teachers need guns! We don't want gun control. We're good with OK Corral in the classroom" and "Higher education?? Study the Jesus book! Everything you need to know is in the Jesus book!" or "They don't teach the jesus book at colleges, which is why young people don't like the jesus rituals and beliefs like Q-Anon, so we'll reduce their budgets since they don't do anything for us with the jesus book!"
Education here is way second class compared to what it was historically. If my child wants to go to university and not learn a trade or something else when he's older, I'm definitely prodding him to study in Europe rather than here. It just doesn't make financial sense to do so since the loans are driven to for-profit servicers, and how is it good for any economy to have your citizens/residents start out their career and adult life with so much debt they can't take risks with entrepreneurship loans that don't involve striving to be YT/TikTok or MTG/Matt Gaetz (sans the politically connected father in Florida) famous. I guess they could start their own church and not be taxed for anything involving the revenue they generate from that.

Taxpayers, which I am, should not have to pay back student loan debt. Students show a lack of intelligence by getting degrees that will make no money or lead to no jobs. Schools should be held accountable for offering fields of study that won’t lead to making money. I blame student and schools for failing. I am about finished paying off my student loan debt which I have been paying for the last 26 years. No, no, no this is neither fair or right. You take a loan you pay it back. Period

I graduated from this school and I am also debt free. Not because I waiting on the government to bail me out, but because I took responsibility for my actions. It's great that people can now move on with their lives, but it does feel like a spit in the face for those who grinded away their student debt just to have to pay more in taxes for those who chose not too. 😢

@luket3452 is it a standard metric? I went to the art institute and found work right away. On the flip side, I've hired people who didn't go to college at all and just got out of high school. I think the problem with art school is people expect to get a degree and automatically get a job. That's not how it works in any creative field.

School is a choice, not mandatory. They knew the price of tuition before they enrolled. Its on the students to pay the loans, not the government. Dont blame the Universities. Doctors have hundreds of thousands of debt from school and it takes them years to pay it off even though they make good money. I know doctors who took 15-20 years to pay off their loans.
This wasn’t about the price of tuition. This was about the predatory loans and lies they were selling to student like myself. I got my 60k debt wiped away, you can cry about it all you want.
@@001Khy exactly my point. You chose to go into 60k in debt without being able to pay for it. That's on you and poor financial decision making. Then you rely on the government to clear your debt, which makes people dependable on the government. Two things here. First, the more people who depend on the government, the bigger government grows which is bad. Second, when the government clears student loans, thats tax payers money. Its arrogant and entitled people who rely on others to foot their bills.
I got a bachelors of business at a community college. 12k. Spent another 5k on IT certificates. I know make $80k a year and ive only been employed for 8 months. Wbu?

I do not make 80k, but I have a combined household that is more than that. You can complain about this, but I rather have the government help out its citizens over funding a war between Ukraine and Russia.

That's the thing. For the most part we knew they were useless. You get into art colleges more for the Networking rather than the degree. Since more often than not the teachers are people who already have a foot in the industry. So you can get picked up. Or if one of your classmates gets a job at [Insert animation studio here] you could probably ask them to put a good word for you in case they need someone with your skillset. Let's say Audio Design.
But the school lied to the students about the employment rates and the salary of graduates. That is really the issue here.
