- I've been a huge fan of ATLA for the longest time and once I read the comics and found out what a tragic character Zuko and Azula's mom was, I had so many song ideas. This lullaby is set right before she's forced to flee the palace to start a new life with her memory wiped clean. She's singing this to both Zuko and Azula :^)

This show deals with so many serious topics in such a healthy way, especially for a kids show. It deals with things like loss, genocide, propaganda in fascist countries, abusive families and misogyny and how you can learn and grow from them. The visuals are beautiful and the scenery is amazing. The attention to detail is so refreshing as well and the animals are so unique and cute because they’re just cross breeds of two different species; like the turtleducks! One of my favorite things about the show is that throughout the entire show, there’s only three filler episodes and they’re actually the fan favorites. The villains are so enticing and the most scary character is a 14 year old princess which is crazy. ATLA is also famous for having one of the best character redemption arcs in animation history. Honestly I could go on and on because it’s just a masterclass in storytelling but I’ll leave you to find out the rest. Truly if you haven’t watched it, you really should.

I completely agree, along with all those, how they took inspiration from different cultures (like Inuit culture, Japan, China, and monk culture) and how they implimented them into the show is beautiful. ATLA is truly a masterpiece
@@luminethetraveler8822 yes exactly! They took four different cultures and separated them and then throughout the show they gave reasons why they are the same and should unite. It’s such a good lesson for kids
Atla is something no other cartoon show can compete with. Its one another level of perfection and deserves all the praise. The way that it takes its story so seriously, its much more than a kids show.
That mask got me thinking: maybe Ursa was wearing the Blue Spirit mask when she killed Azulon, so no one would recognise her, and Zuko happened to find it later on. That would be so symbolic if they did that in any kind of remake

I love how she’s singing to both Azula and Zuko. Some people think she’s favoriting Zuko but she loves both of her kids with all her heart. She wants them both safe. I might write more but I’m a bit distracted by great song!
For her kids to have been born from marital rape, it’s a miracle that she loves them and did her best to try to raise them. I hate how people blame and hate ursa for azulas behavior but will gloss over the fact that she was in an abusive marriage. She was forced to marry a shitty man, had his kids through marital rape, had to beg for Ozai to not kill baby Zuko just moments after he was born, not allowed to talk to her friends and family anymore, had one of their children being turned into a horrible dangerous person (like her father) and was constantly watched. And people say that she should have tried harder to love Azula despite all of this ???🙄 Edit: light yagami is literally proving my point about shaming ursa and favoring Azula. Azula may have been abused but she was also an abuser. Why don’t people get that?? As someone who suffered from sexual and emotional abuse, I have 0 tolerance for abusers, regardless of their age or how sad their backstory is. If Azula was just a smart, bratty person who had a much better conscience, then I would have much more sympathy for her. But in this case, I don’t. I’m sorry but if you want me to have so much sympathy for her, then I should also give it to Ozai since he wasn’t born evil and wasn’t raised right either.
@@k.d3983 I honestly blame Ursa for Azula's corruption (one of the many reasons though). Ozai favored Azula since she was little, and Zuko got favored by their mother. In the comics, Azula was misbehaving to get her mother's attention, but she was so focused on Zuko instead, she didn't even notice Azula's need for affection. The betrayal of her friends, father's abusive treating and lack of her mother's love caused Azula to be an early blooming sociopath. I know Ursa had so much in her head; like protecting Zuko, trying to forget her parents and Ikem... But that doesn't change the fact that she should have show Azula some more affection.
@@teamblack204 None of that is Ursas fault and to blame ursa who had no say on how to raise Azula is seriously showing how people would rather defend someone like Azula and shame someone like Ursa is disgusting to say the least. First of all, Azula knows that her mother loved her. The hallucination towards the end of the series made it clear that Azula knows her mother loved her. So, what’s the point in showing her more love when the other parent makes it very clear that love is a sign of weakness? Second of all, that’s Azulas damn fault for losing her friends. Tip number one: maybe don’t try to kill your friend and her ex-boyfriend?🤔 Third of all: Azulas behavior as a child is something that ANY parent (unless you’re like Ozai) would criticize. If one of your kids start gleefully teasing your other kid that dad is going to kill them, you will punish that kid. Azula was turning into her father and what the hell could ursa have done?

I never really saw Azula’s emotions in the show or the comics to be hatred. I think the hate was a way to mask her pain while also justifying the evil she chose to lean into.
By making her mother the enemy she could avoid the truth that her own actions/beliefs were wrong, and continue to live within the lie she created.

I've heard it's something like "Azula is forced to confront her past" or something like that. Which sounds like she's gonna go through some kind of self discovery. If that's true, thank god. After all the emotional damage this girl has suffered she needs some real peace.

I can 100% see her singing this to Zuko and tucking him into bed before leaving
Yes! I imagine she would start just after telling Zuko “Never forget you are” and him not understanding, and then he falls asleep in her arms without quite comprehending it’s the last time he’ll see her for many years. But then at the lines “One more memory/One more kiss” she goes to the sleeping Azula, kisses her, and gently strokes her hair before leaving, a completely different impression than how she acted around Azula when she was being creepy and vicious earlier. (We see her kiss Azula goodbye in the Ursa-centric comic). And that’s also heartbreaking because she did love both her children equally, she just related to and bonded more with Zuko because Azula was already being groomed by Ozai. “You are loved/Remember this.” But Azula doesn’t. She grows up never feeling loved, convinced her own mother saw her as undeserving of empathy and affection. This song is tragic for Ursa, Zuko and Azula all at once. That’s why it’s so beautiful.

@Aiden Hartley She DID try to get to Azula, but the girl was too proud and brain washed by her father. In the end of the day, Azula was much more a dad's daughter just like Zuko as his mother's son
@Symbrah Completely agree. Although you can ask any pair of sibilings that "parents love every child the same" is not so true. We know it, our parents know it, but we just dont talk about it. Its okay to have favorites. At least in the fire familily it was one parent favorite for each. Not all are the same, as many middle child can tell
Man, imagine an ATLA musical where Ursa sings this in the flashback of where she leaves. "My loves" it makes me feel like she did say goodbye to Azula as well, just that the princess didn't wake up like Zuko did.
She actually does say goodbye to Azula, if you read the comics. She kisses her before she leaves the palace, but as you said, Azula just doesn't wake up. Maybe things would have been different if she had.

Holy sugar I never thought of an atla musical having Ursa's song
LITTERAL GOOSEBUMPS. This song made me realize all the sacrifices Ursa did in order to protect her children. Both of them. Even though what she did was not right, she didn't know or mean to harm anyone. Ursa was in a traumatic situation and she had to get out of it. This show talks about topics kid shows tend to avoid because they might be too "damaging" or "harsh", but I think this show talks about it perfectly. Also, Ursa did love Azula, it's just she tried to discipline her because Ursa was afraid that she might turn like her father.

I keep on thinking that she sings the first verse to Zuko, the second to Azula, the rest to both of them. She escapes the palace while she's harmonising and at the end, when she sings "we will meet again" she turns around one last time to look at the palace, tears in her eyes

Really hits you in the heart. The fact that she said 'loveS' makes you kind of feel sad that Azula did not know that her mom loved her. maybe then she would be different.

My view on Ursa’s choice is mixed. On one hand, I have the utmost sympathy for the ordeals she went through at the hands of Ozai. He was a horrendous and vile human being that I wouldn’t wish on any woman. On the other hand, I am infuriated on Zuko and Azula’s behalf. She left no way for her children to someday find her, if they so wished. She fully intended to leave that chapter of her life behind for good. Zuko may have been in a healthy enough place to accept and move on from this, but his sister certainly wasn’t. I’ve always wondered how it must have felt to Azula, knowing her mother willingly chose to forget her. It was shown that, in her own way, she also desired her mother’s love and attention. But Ozai steered her down a dark path. Children are more intuitive than we normally think about, Azula even more so than a regular child. I believe she picked up on the power dynamics in her family and recognized that Zuko’s “soft” behavior is what earned him their father’s ire. She already seemed like a daddy’s girl and thus she adjusted her behavior accordingly. I can’t imagine how confused she must have been at her mother’s rejection of her behavior. The children were unknowingly placed on different sides of their parent’s war of ideals. Azula emulated her father, but became estranged from her mother as a result. Zuko emulated his mother, to the scorn of his father. They were damned no matter what side they took. But despite her choice, I know Azula still craved the approval and care her mother seemed to lavish on Zuko. For her mother to disappear suddenly and without explanation, it meant that desire would go on unfulfilled and gradually turn into a source of resentment and self loathing. When she finally had a chance to meet her mother again, it was only to realize her mother had willingly forgotten her and replaced her with a “better” daughter. What sort of anguish must she have felt in that moment. As we saw in her breakdown before the final Agni-kai, a deep source of her insecurity was rooted in her belief that her mother never loved her. To know her mother chose to abandon her for good only cemented this in her heart. Ursa may have been the key to Azula’s redemption. Azula had no Iroh to lean upon and learn from. She had no alternate mother figure to fill that void in her heart. But now we will never know if she could have been saved.

I puzzled over her choice myself, but after some thought I think I understand why. Ursa likely was afraid that Ozai would still come after her or have her killed, which she better than anyone knows he's capable of and more than willing to do. Losing her memories of her past life was the only way she could change her face to ensure she would never be found. I know she didn't want to forget Azula or Zuko, but her terrible fear of Ozai won. A woman desperate to escape an abusive spouse will do almost anything. I also wonder if it was because Ursa knew her children would suffer at Ozai's hands, but also that there was no way she could save them, and the pain of that knowledge was just too much for her to bear.

Me: May I direct your attention to this long list of reasons why you are wrong
-Aang deals with the genocide of all his people and directly sees his friend and master's skeleton lying on the floor in front of dead fire nation soldiers
- Zuko (No debate) has PTSD from his father and his sister for both of them abusing him verbally and (Probably) physically until he was 13
- Katara saw her mother being interrogated by a fire nation commander and being threatened and then in the next couple of minutes her mother died and her father and all the other men in the tribe left to go fight the war which put most of the responsibilities of the tribe on her 14-year-old shoulders
Need I say more, I mean I think everyone reading this has left so yeah.
But still Aang had one clear goal in mind “To defeat the fire lord”
For Korra She has no clear Goal, my assumption is that her Goal is to find out the true meaning as as the role of the avatar

When I imagine she's singing this for both Azula and Zuko I start to cry, because Ursa always loved her but Azula didn't understand it till the end. She thinks that no one loves her and it's breaking my heart. It' means weakness for Azula being loved. So sad.

What if the reason Ursa spent all her time with Zuko and not Azula was because Lord Ozai wouldn't let her see Azula? Maybe he filled Azula's head with lies of her mother calling her a monster as motivation for her to train harder and become stronger. Maybe Ursa really did love Azula as much as Zuko, but Ozai forbade her from telling Azula that because he wanted her to be strong.
Facts. I always wondered why Azula was such a horrible person; even as a child. But I never thought about it being simply because Azula was never allowed to interact with people who’d have shown her love and compassion like Iroh and Ursa did to Zuko.
So glad you specified in the description she's singing to both kids! I've seen a ton of people online saying how she neglected Azula and only really showed Zuko any real affection, but I think that's an unfair reading of the show, and theres plenty of evidence to show that Azula's belief that her mother thought her evil was all in her head

You should consider watching it, if you like cartoons! I don't think I have ever seen a cartoon more perfectly written and with better worldbuilding than ATLA. And I watched *a lot* of cartoons. The characters are great too.

I like that the line at the beginning is "My loves" plural, Azula needs love, possibly more than Zuko.
A few more lines at the end of self-deprecation from Ursa for abandoning her children; I think we all need to remember that Ursa wasn't prefect and that as much as she loved her children, she ultimately failed them.
I wouldn't go that far to say she failed them. She did everything she could, but there is only so much you can accomplish when the father is the ruler and a tyrant.
I believe she didn't “fail” them. She was going through a traumatic experience and wanted with all her soul to escape, but she always stayed because she was afraid that something would happen to her babies (Zuko and Azula). So when the Fire Lord threatened to assassinate Zuko if she did not leave and assassinate Azulon herself, she was forced to leave to protect him. She did not leave because she wanted to leave them alone, or because she did not want them, much less because she preferred Zuko over Azula, but because she had no other option

Oh my Matt, I just can't take it, Reinaery is able to have a perception, an interpretation of the characters that she expresses so magnificently that I almost feel like these songs are original from these same universes, because it is not possible, it seems that her plunge is so deep and extensive under these personalities and emotions that it is almost as if she takes form of them and feels in skin everything they have ever felt and feel!! The lyrics are all so intense and well produced, I honestly can't stop identifying some of my OC's (characters I created) with some of the most varied lyrics composed by Reinaeiry, and I'm sure the justification behind this is how human they are. the words it composes, how real feelings are expressed and shouted, it is impossible that there is no identification, because it is human, everything that is sentimental is not felt by just one, and this is the incredible, the art of creating, especially the composing, at my discretion is one of the most important skills for the world, they say that composers, singers, artists in general are trivial jobs and that they do nothing to shape the world, but I say that this is a shallow thought, when you you become a content creator you express yourself there, and this can help with expressiveness, in the complex of several other people, usually viewers, but other artists are also helped, and this is AMAZING, because these people are influencers, sometimes someone who didn’t have much chance in the course of it and is at his limit cannot say how he feels, a song, a letter, a poetry, a drawing, all of this can help to say more than if could in words out of the genuine mouth, that's what I'm talking about, this work is one of the most important, you present your ideas and feelings, sharing them we can share in a broken heart what we both feel, we can be comfort and affection, this is to shape the world!! I love how she's singing not just to Zuko, but to Azula as well. There are people who say that she prefers Zuko over Azula, but that is not true. Maybe because of the Fire Lord she couldn't be with Azula, but she loves her too
The "You are loved, remember this" part is probably dedicated to Azula tho. Remember she had 2 kids. Azul thought her mum didn't love her, so their relationship is much more complicated

it makes me so mad when people are jerks about ursa.
"she abandoned her kids" she was forced into exile by the ruler of her country (who was also her abusive husband) for saving one of her kids lives. she tried to take them with her, but ozai said hed hunt them down and kill them all. she knew ozai and therefor had every reason to believe that threat.
"she thought azula was a monster" no, she didnt. ozai told azula that her "own mother thought she was a monster" as a way to distance azula from ursa so he could have more control over her (azula). thats how abusers w o r k.
"ursa played favourites" she didnt?? she was trying to protect both her kids but theres only one of her. plus, imagine youre ursa; you have one kid who seems happy, healthy, prodigious, and *fine*. whos praised; and one kid who your abusive, narcissistic husband uses as a scapegoat, who has all the hatred and violence (psychological, physical, etc) turned to them. which one would you think needed more positive reinforcement? which one would you think needed more help?
choosing to forget? yeah, that was a sucky move. im not condoning or saying that was the right choice (the right choice wouldve been therapy but that wasnt an option at the time), but i get the feeling that a lot of the people that use that as evidence that shes 'just as bad as ozai' or smth dont understand *what trauma does to you.* what *abuse* does to you, especially in the immediate aftermath when you just want all of it to be *done*
and neither of her kids thought shed abandoned them. they thought she was dead.
OZAI was the one at fault. not ursa. you cant blame someone for being unable to constantly protect two other people from an *abuser*. what happened was not her fault.

I love this song its gorgeous and perfectly reperesents the love she has for Zuko and Azula. Honestly until I read the comics I hated that she abandoned her son and even though in the few scenes she had before leaving showed she didnt want to leave her kids the show never let us know why. Then I read the comics and to find out that it was all a big plan she was forced into by her demonic , pompos, selfish b..... Of a husband that resulted into her having to leave the kids for her own protection still sickens me! But Im glad they were reunited in the end and to this day I just pity Azula and people in real life like her who never really had a loving mentor to guide her.

Ursa lost nearly everything because of her marriage to Ozai:
-Noren/Ikem
-her face
-Zuko (who she finds out later is scarred)
-Azula (who she finds out later has gone insane)
-pretty much her life in general
She became a murderer (not on purpose) by poisoning Azulon...
Also I think Azula only strived to be a firebending prodigy so she could win at least one parent's love, her father's. She believed her mom hated her for how she acted and believed Ursa thought she was a monster. So if Azula had been raised differently, with equal love, perhaps she wouldn't need to become a crazy psychotic tool to destroy the world.
This is also shown in the song where it is sang "But I leave with love, though you may think I'm wrong"
When you think about it Zuko still had her mask to remember her by, meanwhile Azula had nothing

I've been playing with the idea of writing a redemption story for Azula, and listening to this I suddenly had a very clear image in my head of a scene. I imagine Azula is found incapacitated in some way, by injury or illness, and brought back home to be treated. Ursa goes to see her and thinks back on her past decisions, regretting that she didn't do more and blaming herself. Then she starts singing this song, and unknown to her, Azula is awake and listening, and hearing this is the first thing that starts getting through to her.
Wasn't expecting to cry....but that won't stop me from replaying this. Great job.
