Reminds me of when I went up to the top of the World Trade Center (late 90’s) with my Yeasu VX1R and talked to my friend back in Sayreville NJ on 6.52 using only half a watt!
That was a great contact as I had just got in town also and just set up my station here in the Bronx when Walt started calling @K8MRD RADIO STUFF de “The Other Mike” KD2SXD
Thanks! That’s my son, he’s the lead guitarist and singer for the band Court Street Company. Check them out on all the platforms. Spotify, iTunes, etc.
Baofengs have no bandpass filters, thus they are getting overloaded with powerful signals in the city. The closest (by price) to that Baofeng is Quansheng UV-R50. It has filters and works way better. Yesterday I visited Alexandra Palace viewpoint in London and "triggered the security" by making QSOs there :) And yes, I also had to hold the handheld horizontally to reduce noise. Have no idea why.
Mike KD2SXD just mentioned your UA-cam channel and his contact with you in our AlohaDMR net about a hour ago. Great activation 👍🏼😊. Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. Best 73 de Simon HB9EZW
After using a Drake TR-22 from the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center back in the early 70's, my husband and I brought a Yaesu FT-60R up to the 86th floor Observation Deck of the Empire State Building in June 2012. I worked KC2TNT in Brooklyn full quieting on 146.52 simplex. Within 30 seconds I was surrounded by excited uniformed guards who questioned me and ordered me to stop. 9/11 paranoia appeared to still be rampant back then. I am surprised that the high level of RF up there didn't overload the Baofeng receiver. Did anyone challenge your operating while up there? de KP4MD
Thanks for the video. Question: Why are you holding the HT sideways? The antenna should be vertical (up and down), not sideways. You lost signal both in transmitting and receiving.
Actually not, I couldn’t make contacts with it vertical, if you go back and watch you’ll see the signal get stronger when I tilted the radio to a near horizontal position. I think my take off angle was too high in the vertical position, who knows but it didn’t work when I held it vertical. I mentioned that near the end of the video.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES It could be because of a high noise floor, tilting it horizontal like you did would help reduce that. I have done this before in high RF environments.

Baofeng to Baofeng 😂I didn't even know that it was a thing. Great content Walt keep up the great video ideas.
Hahaha, thanks!!
I was trying different options and it sounded cool since I had my absorbent here with me. Lol
On top of the world and you work a subscriber! Too cool.
It was fun! Thanks for watching!

I’ll have to visit that observation deck on my next trip to NY.
I have climbed a lot of towers but the "step out on the glass" is out of the question. LOL
Best outro music on UA-cam. Seriously well done!

What is the name of that song?
Very cool! I’d definitely be taking an HT up there with me too! 73 and Merry Christmas! K3DMM

That’s what Ham Radio is about. Trying different things and having a good time sharing it. Thanks. Jim K4YNA

Great "activation". I wished I had been on 146.52 FM to make the QSO. I once had a QSO with a ham on the 77th floor of the Empire State.
Thank you! I actually thought about doing the Empire State but changed my mind at the last minute
I thought you was on the Empire State Building at first til I seen this video.
Like the video I wish 2 meter picks back up the last 12 years it has been dying off .
Thanks for watching!
Great video and stunning views.
Thanks for watching!!!
Glad to have came across your channel, look forward to checking out more of your work. Keep having fun Walt 👍
Thanks! I just subscribed to your channel as well and look forward to your work!
Staten Island repeater will get you from street level to down the Jersey shore

No but I got some hard looks from people around me. Thanks for watching! de K4OGO
How far do you think your signal traveled? I am not familiar with the distance in New York. You certainly make interesting videos!
Thank you! It was probably 10 to 15 miles, I’m not sure what part of the Bronx he was located in. Maybe Mike will see this and comment.
Hey 👋🏽 Walt.. it was about 10 air miles from your location to mine in the Bronx.
Awesome, thanks!

Did you just go New York to Florida?
Polarity does matter. Just throwing that out there.
