I remember going on this route back in June or July 1992, final destinaton being India. I was young and we left the house just when NBC was beginning coverage of the championship game (on a Sunday afternoon) of the Americas basketball preliminary tournament in Portland, a precursor to get entry into the Olympics. It featured the Dream Team of course and I was upset that I had to miss it. I also missed some of the Dream Team's games in Barcelona. To this day, I find it incredible that the 747 came to Charlotte and I was on one of the flights.
I love the vid. Brings back memories. As my first widebody flight, I flew on a Lufthansa 747-200 Combi in June 1998 from Atlanta to Frankfurt (and return) when they had the Frankfurt-Atlanta-Houston-Atlanta-Frankfurt route.
Wow I was born around this time I never knew that spot was there that early! Its still there today! I saw a 777 the other day! Hopefully a 4 engine aircraft one day
Thanks for the comments. Yes, I plan to post video from recent plane spotting as soon as possible. For the moment however I am trying to go through all my older videos and find unique and interesting footage that people will enjoy.
In 1988, I flew an LH 747-200 (combi) from ATL to FRA on 30/Jun and the return (FRA to ATL) on 14/Jul. (It was part of the Frankfurt-Atlanta-Houston-Atlanta-Frankfurt route. I think the flight numbers were LH 438 and LH 439 at the time.) Lovely to see that plane again (my first international flight).
Cool video. I remember reading in Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine in 1989 or 1990 about a USDOT program encouraging foreign carriers' interest in secondary US cities, and recall Lufthansa expressed interest in Charlotte, Portland (OR) or a third city (can't remember). I guess CLT got the nod. Service started August 1, 1990 and lasted about four years, IIRC.

Great video! Normally I don't go for the musical background but this was very nicely done.

Love the video! Did they ever fly their 747-400's to CLT?
it just touched me to see that PAN AM 727
Anyone know why they terminated the route? What was the timetable for these flights?
Flight number?
20 years later Lufthansa a333 and 343 come into town
@BNSFFREAK747 Not to my knowledge. I wish they would some day.
Great video. Lufthansa is a great airline. Do they still fly a 747 into Charlotte-Douglas?
Scott Higham Lee 4 years late but the last I saw a few months ago, they were flying an A330 into CLT
It got ended shortly after :(
