Sure - spin doctors have always existed. However, New labour was the turning point where British politics became nothing but a media / image carnival and this man was instrumental in that change. Do you really think that the way politics is communicated is entirely down to a cabal of people like Campbell? They don't operate in a vacuum, the environmental conditions of the modern world has necessited this media obsessed, image conscious form of political management because absolutely everything is recorded and noted by the general public and parties can lose an election over their leader eating a bacon sandwich. We call them incompetent if they can't media manage and we call them image obessessed when they're good at it; maybe we as a country need to take a long hard look at our values and start picking our politicians on things that matter. Until then whether you like it or not people like Alistair Campbell will need to exist.

A large pert of the change can be seen in the shift in the way products are advertised - a shift from plain communication to image / lifestyle /fantasy communication.
