But the story was written in 1970 by a guy who didn't like the little kid books becuase he believed they weren't interesting and were mind numbing(or something like that), so of course it's going to be dark.
Even original cartoon shows was much darker than this show. These people just hating on the show cuz it's not like the original animation. And they all saying kitchen watch I don't see any problem with kids watching the show there's nothing wrong with the show that a kid can't see
Literally just that quick clip of Hazel talking to the Black Rabbit was enough to tear me up, there will never be an adaptation of watership down where that scene doesnt get to me
Watership Down didn't traumatize me as a child. I was born and raised in rural areas and witnessed wildlife doing what they do, fighting to survive and losing at it sometimes. Some of the most vicious animals I saw were the cute ones, like sparrows and rabbits. When I watched the movie as a little child I was like meh, this looks pretty accurate.
3:27 no they can't just be cute and sweet because nature is it cute and sweet humans make things that appear "cute" how to be adorable creatures when really they're not. And even though the story is about rabbits. rabbits themselves or not inherently cute and completely docile animals, they can be very aggressive and very very violent. and if you hadn't skipped out on the original film then you would know that the original Watership Down makes the 2018 version look like GI Joe in comparison.
I loved watership down. I fell in love with the characters. Re-watching it gave me more input into their ambitions and such. It was like watching a war movie it was crazy. I do recommend it. It just takes a certain type of person to like it I guess.
Ps. Hyzenthlay was the one who was gonna get killed by big bun. Not clover. When the other bunnies sang out for her, was one of the safest, yet beautiful, scenes in the whole series.

I watched the original of this film (the 70's animated version) when I was about six or so. Didn't ruin me at all. It is also not as watered down as this new version. It simply deals with a lot of adult themes (death, government etc). I found the original film to be thought provoking and refreshingly real. And the whole love story in the new one? It's a weird, out of place part they added in.

I'm sorry Nerdwire, but research Watership Down before deciding to watch this movie. It sounded like you were expecting a cute, feel good series, but you got a story of a complex societies and the fight for freedom. It really is a great series, once you as the audience stop putting this great series in a troph.

Zackary Rall Hazel is the only one who ever sees the Black Rabbit of Inle, so it could be theorized its a hallucination that rabbits see when they know they're on the brink of death due to the myth in their culture
Oh if THIS 2018 series gives you this reaction, have I got news for you. This is the most PG version of watership down I've ever laid my eyes on and honestly it's disappointing. No, I'm not a sociopath who likes to watch bunnies die. But I do like to see the life of a rabbit portrayed so realistically and crudely and also artistically interpreted so beautifully, including the rabbits' mythology and religion like it was done in the 1978 movie. This series brings it down in every possible way and keeps reinforcing the stereotype that animation = suitable for all, especially children, other than the fact that it looks pretty.
I personally like watershipe down and it’s supposed to be realistic in the life of the wild rabbits. As Branch ones said “life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows”.
I've watched both Watership Down movies, and honestly the new one isn't too bad. The book that it's based on is ment for a older audience, it's dark, and I was only a toddler when I first watched it, and i learnt alot from that movie. The way I see it, if you mollycoddle your kids and shield them from things like death and super natural, then you'll get idiots like her. Lord of the Rings, The Black Cauldron, and Watership Down, The Secret of NIMH and many Tim Burton movies is what made me appreciate the dark genre of kids movies and shaped me to be less horrified of everything remotely different, and be more opened minded. This disappointment of a fucking woman has had a very sheltered life and it shows.
I thought this was reasonably well done. I've read the book and it is pretty dark in spots but there are also lighter moments which seemed to be skipped here. You know they are aiming for the darker side when the Black Rabbit of Islay is one of the friendlier, more positive, and upbeat characters. I definitely wouldn't show this to younger children, but I wouldn't show the animated version to them either.
Nice review. Yeah, I was familiar with the old cartoon, but only saw bits of it. But why on earth show it on Easter?!?!?!?! Just curious, how is the video going about the Barney and Friends get stuck under the parachute moments? Need any help? PLEASE message me back
In the story it's usually because he's old - actually my biggest issue with this version is that he doesn't look old. It only seems like a year or less have passed whereas in the movie you can feel that years have passed and he's gotten old and fragile
In the original book and 70s movie he dies of old age but for some reason in this adaptation he dies only a year later it's kinda odd I guess it was illness or infection I dunno.

Watership Down is a story about a group of rabbits leaving the safety of their warren to find a new home while facing the danger of the world so naturally it’s not going to be cute, the Netflix series did toned down on the gore, violence and nightmare fuel from the 1970 movie but in both this and the original movie the narrator said “all the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies. And whenever they catch you, they will kill you” subtlety telling the audience “hey this will get violence, it’s not a cutesy bunny series” The review was so hard to sit through because it felt like the host didn’t get a single point of the series
Be warned BBC/Netflix jacked with everything. It's instantly noticeable if you have watched the old 78 movie. The voice cast is the redeeming quality of the update though, so not all bad news.
I agree the movie is dark. It is partly the eerie music they use. I read the book and it isn't horrific at all. Yah there is scary parts but it doesn't come across super creepy and gory. It's one of those books that shouldn't be made into a movie. The book has just enough scary to make it real... it is is FAR from being disturbing and too creepy. The only creepy part in the book is Cowslips warren... but again it wasn't horrible. The movies just make it so life like and add too much blood (old version). But this saying it is still (the book) too much for kids and I'd say 13+ to read. More of a teen/adult storyline and style plus it is a bit violent. Anyone read the book and agree with me?!
