  • Hey guys! The Mazda RX7 is one of the Japanese supercar manufacturers, but with a twist. It's powered by a rotary engine which makes it unique and provides great power potential out of it's small displacement. How did the RX7 come to fruition though? This video will be on the history of the RX7.

    Nice video. My first car was a used 1984 RX-7. It had the 1.2L 12A engine (no turbo) with 5-speed manual transmission. It was a joy to drive for the 7 years I owned it.

    One thing to make clear the 13b REW didn't have two different sized turbos both were the same size and one operated at lower rpms and both kicked in at higher rpms 4500rpm just to clearafy Great Video!!!

      Actually the compressor trims are different but yes, the turbos are the same.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 6 років тому

      What Beaver said is correct. The turbo's on the 3rd gen are sequential. Meaning at low RPM you run on the primary, there is a 500 rpm transition to parallel mode where you run on both turbo's until the revs drop below 3500rpm. It been awhile since I had the twins but I think the transition started at 4500rpm and completed at 5000rpm. Boost drops by 2lbs during the trans. In spirited driving it only happens once as shifts near redline will keep revs above 5000.
      US\production ended in 95' not 93' with 13,879 made over the 3 year span. Just for some context my black touring model with a 5 speed was one of 235 in 94' for the US market and only 3403 total. One of Mazda's slogans for early 90's was "it's not an everybody car", they could have added and not everybody can have one.

      I think the 13A was the best engine 1979 I drove one before you can string the 13 name all the way to 55 before you even get to the second-gear you are already pushing 65 to 70. But it has to be tuned just right for it to go like that and that's a 79 RX7

    Great video. One thing he didn't mention though, was that with each new series, the price went up. Since one of it's original selling points was affordability, that hurt it a lot. It was a sports car that the average person could afford.

    The RX-7,8, Skyactiv and many other Mazda projects came from one freelance designer. He has worked with many companies throughout the years and has now retired.
    The 16X rotary engine only received half of the design improvements from this designer, he kept the improvements for later on.
    The final designs were later destroyed by A unknowing third party. While the designer had health issues.

    I believe audi is using or planning to use a rotary engine paired to a hybrid system to meet emission standards. If the RX7 returns, this is probably going to be the layout since the NSX and the R36 GTR is going the same route

    Loved my Savanna but always it struggled in the torque stakes. Im so glad I kept the faith and waited for the FD3S. Haven't drive a better balanced car straight out of the box.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому +1

      Yes. People complain about the torque, but the type of balance you get out of the car is amazing.

    • @raceace
      @raceace 7 років тому +1

      I was quite happy with the torque I could get out of the 13BREW in the FD. I owned that car for many years while in Japan. We had great fuel octane and mild weather. So with relatively minor mods, bumping it up was simple. Was surprisingly easy to keep R32s & R33s honest. The SA22C Savanna I owned in Australia. The 12A turbo without inter-cooling really suffered in the heat.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому

      Yes, I think torque is just a matter of preference. Sounds like you've lived in interesting places. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    idk why japan kills their great cars like the NSX, S2000, TYPE R, SUPRA, GTR, SILVIA, RX7, EVO'S, ECLIPSE, MR2'S, and to name a few. i mean, yeah GTR and NSX are back but they're not that intimidating as the 90's.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому +1

      Check out my history videos and you'll know. Japan had a bubble in the 90's which affected all Japanese car manufacturers.
      Not sure what intimidating is to you, but a 13-14second 1/4 mile 90's GTR/NSX is no match for a current day 10-11second 1/4mile GTR/NSX.

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 5 років тому

      All companies go through the same... stick around a little longer and you'll see it all come and go. None of them were intimidating though, all very civil, well engineered and very usable... you wanna experience intimidating? Try the supercars of the 70s! Big power, archaic technology, heavy controls and unforgiving handling, those things will chew you up, spit you out and leaving you bleeding out on the sidewalk. The 90s made everything easy and accessible, from EVERY angle.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому +1

      Thanks! Yeah, that's a tough one. I think the current state of Mazda right now may not allow them to continue with that project. Using the rotary may be difficult to meet current emissions standards and at the same time, making the power to be competitive. We'll have to wait and see.

Mazda actually made 1 lhd 2002 spirit r at the request of the Mazda north America president to be used for display over here. motor tend actually has a video here on UA-cam of them taking it out for a review a few years back. • @GTContent

      Not at this time. Any "RX7" will only be allowed to have a rotary by purists. A piston engine would stain it's lineage. The problem is that rotary's are too difficult to meet the stricter emission standards. I wouldn't count on a rotary powered 4th generation RX7 anytime soon.

    Damn buddy I like your video of RX-7 my favorite sports car from Japan! Could you help me if I buy a Spirit R Type A is it possible to convert it to Left hand drive?

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 6 років тому

      That would be the hard way. Just get a left hand drive model and covert the body. You need need the 99' spec bumper cover, wing 17" wheels and taillights. Mechanically the main difference are the 99' spec twins which spool slightly faster, 4 way abs vs the 3 way in the US cars and upgraded ECU.
      The 4 way abs is nice but a unit from a corvette is vastly superior as they modulate twice as fast. The twins aren't worth it they can't handle as much boost and can't be rebuilt. Switch an aftermarket ECU unless you plan on keeping it stock. The 17" wheels are stupid expensive but look nice. The Mazda body parts aren't cheep either but it's the only bumper cover that fits properly. The adjustable wing is nice but it's fairly heavy.
      I only used the wing, the front bumper is an after market plateless clone, I do have a OEM in garage though. Went aftermarket with the wheels despite being 18's they are lighter and wider for 255's in the front and 285's rear with no rubbing on a slightly lowered car, the fenders were all rolled. I could run up to 295's all the way around without flares which isn't bad for a car designed for 225's.

    You would think Nissan and Mitsubishi would be doing some sort of partnership to make their sports cars, say Mitsubishi's model being awd exclusive while the Nissan being rwd exclusive.

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому

      Yeah, it would be nice, but from a cost perspective, it may not be profitable. I think the direction of Mitsubishi will be on SUV's and not AWD.

    Great car. But it absolutely needs a turbocharger. I had an n/a 1986 gxl in white with red iluxury interior and 2+2 seets and sunroof. and it was fun but completely lacks the tourque and horsepower.

    There are also forged aluminium suspension parts in the 2. gen ( FC ) , have one . Even the car jack is made from this . According to the German understanding of the Wankel working principle it has no displacement here, we pay tax according to its weight ( 196€ / a )

      Mazda Australia ceased selling the Rx7 after the series 7. All series 8 Rx7s in Australia are "grey imports" and where sold as second hand cars only.

    Such a pretty looking car. But I sat in one on a used car lot. I think I also test drove it. From what I remember, it felt like you were lying down in the car, couldn't really see well, and I am five foot nine inches tall. Second, it was weird and hard to shift. Not pleasant. Pass.

    12A is 1.1L not 1.2L just throwing that out there

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому

      Nate Rist Yes, technically it's 1,146cc/1.15l. They've rounded up to 1.2l, hence it's name.

    • @NateRist
      @NateRist 7 років тому

      they rounded it up for it's name, but is still classified as a 1.1L officially

    • @GTContent
      @GTContent  7 років тому

      Nate Rist Not disagreeing with you. I can see Mazda marketing wanting to round up since the "larger" 1.2L displacement may be more attractive in the USA or just sounds better. For us technical folks, it's not.

    Rotary engines are junk! I’ve owned two FD’s and maintained the cars meticulously. Still had major issues with both. Leaky turbos at 21000 miles on one and failed Apex seals on the other at around 30000 miles. I should’ve bought Supras but loved the looks of the FD.

      Every 5-6 months, keep an eye on oil levels because it INJECTS oil for lubrication, and pre mix your gas for further lubrication. Not too hard at all, just gotta know what to do and why you're doing it.
