    Its so cool that the drowning woman that Mia first let in is the one pretending to be her mother the whole time thats why you can hear under water noises everytime shes around. Also if you slow it down at the end it shows that jade actually pushed mia into the traffic to save her brother.

      @@shesscaredyup in one of the scenes joss says that the spirit becomes weaker the longer theyre around as the body fights back which is why riley was okay by the end.. all they needed to do was nothing. But because Mia kept using the hand the drowned woman was able to keep appearing as her mother (although kept getting worse) to convince her to kill riley so they could have him

    Fun fact! Riley is shown to be fine in the end because after a few days, the spirits leave the host (this is said by the brother from the beginning of the film). If the host dies while still possessed they get trapped in the other world, like Riley temporarily was, and how Mia ends up! Her “mother” was manipulating Mia into killing Riley so he really would be trapped.
    So if she had just waited it out, without using the hand, the possession would’ve weakened on its own! (something something getting clean/drug metaphor)

    It's definitely the best horror film of the year. Definitely a metaphor on drug use and addiction. When horror uses real life themes it makes for a much deeper experience. Talk To Me uses the themes of drug use, addiction, peer pressure, the pain of loss, despair, suicide, unresolved trauma, moments when we're at our most vulnerable and mixes in the supernatural horror elements, making it an absolute masterpiece and one hell of a horror movie making debut! It's not a feel good movie by any stretch but it does what it sets out to do and it's done so brilliantly.

    A few notes:
    -That’s not actually her mother, it’s a spirit trying to manipulate her into thinking it’s her mother.
    -So Mia actually broke one of the rules the first time she got possessed and stayed for longer that ninety seconds, that’s why she was encountering a lot of things during the movie, which also leads us to the ending, when she threw herself and died, she got trapped in the spirit world of the hand.
    - Her father and Riley healed and are now okay.
    - The spirit manipulating Mia is the drowned woman she first saw, that’s why whenever we see her mother, she seems to be more drenched and bloated, the spirit starts gradually to lose form of her mother as time passes and appear as her true form, which is the drenched woman she first saw, also you could hear water noises during the film.

    • @stolasleong
      @stolasleong Рік тому +14

      i actually think the father being at the hospital isn't because he survived, the Philippou bros. have stated that most answers to the questions people have are in clues all throughout the movie, while Mia is incapable of going through with ending a life (example: the kangaroo, Riley and her own father) she doesn't attempt to save a life either or rather fails to do so in Riley's case. The elevator the father hops on in the ending is heading up, i believe this implies he has passed and is moving on, whilst Mia stays in the floor between ground (earth or hell if you want to include it as its below earth) and the upper floors/sky (heaven) therefore in Limbo amongst the other souls the hand has trapped.

    The movie has such a great allegory to drugs, it works in every way, from the way teens mess with it in a stupid and dangerous manner, to the real consequences when a kid gets involved, to the fact that all Mia had to do through out the movie was just stop, but since she'd "done" more than she should have, she couldn't stop and every time she used the hand again things got worse, she got more isolated or more tricked into doing the evil entity's plan. Such a great movie. Also always enjoy your reactions 👏

  • @snailflowers
    @snailflowers Рік тому +35

    Once you die, whoever "they" are get to keep you forever. That's why her "mother" and the other spirits were trying to convince her that Riley needed to die, because from the very first time she let the first spirit in he said that they liked Riley (this is also why Riley was trying to kill himself every time he was conscious, the spirit wanted him to die while it was still inside him so they could keep him). They wanted her to think that killing him and then probably killing herself was what needed to happen, since Riley and Mia were the only two who went for longer than 90 seconds so they were the only ones that still had a spirit inside them. But as the guy whose brother died said, if you spend enough time away from them, they start to lose their influence on you. If we go with the metaphor for substance use, this is my interpretation of the metaphor of that. This voice in your head convincing you that it's never going to get better unless you die is the way that depression basically tricks you into thinking death is the only way to make the pain stop, when actually the further away from those substances or self-destructive behaviors you get, the more you start to see that dying isn't the only way out. It feels inescapable when you're in the thick of it, but if you can just hold on, you'll realize that it gets better. Luckily for Riley and unluckily for the spirits, Mia couldn't kill an innocent creature even if she did truly believe that would put it out of its misery, so in the end, the spirits just got to keep Mia, not Riley.

    The hand is definitely a substitute for hard drugs. The way it gets passed around among teens at a party, the peer pressure to "do it", using it to escape the grief and loss of her mother that she couldn't accept, the teens doing embarrassing/humiliating things while under it's influence and those things being filmed by the other teens in the room. Also, their refusal to delete the footage once Daniel was no longer under the influence and told them to delete it. Carrying the hand in a backpack and passing it around. Spiraling more and more out of control the longer it's used. The inability to stop using it. The lies and deceptions with her friends. I think that's why the film hits so hard, because you can see what's coming but it's also clear that the only way to avoid it is to stop using the hand and she can't bring herself to do that. Very tragic film and even more tragic because it reflects reality for so many people.

    There are so many things that I noticed when I watched it twice. I didn't catch that the spirit was plotting to get Riley during Mia's first possession along with the drowned woman pretending to be her mother. I'm also SO curious at how the spirit that Riley saw looked since he was so shocked that he didn't even turn away. I wonder if it was the old one. They have already green lit the second one so I can't wait to see how they expand on everything. It would be awesome to see it all unfold from the other perspective.

The Philippou brothers bring a lot of creativity to the table and discuss important themes such as grief, depression, addiction, and technology. I do think waiting it out is the solution. The first spirit made it clear that they liked Riley and they just waited for an opportunity. When they possessed him they wanted to kill him so they'd keep him (the little girl in the hospital was probably telling and showing the truth) but just knocked the body unconscious. This would be why when he wakes up he immediately tries to kill the body, because with time Riley would regain power over it. And also why they'd manipulate the girl into killing him for them once he started to gain some control.

    Synopsis: a story about teens dabbling in possession as an allegory for drug use. The concept sounds like it would be cliche and preachy. But how they use that concept as a foundation, fleshing the movie out with compelling scenes and characters, that's what makes all the difference.
    Anything can be a good movie if you know how to captivate your audience. You don't have to do anything truly unique. You just have to have engaging characters and tell a good story.

    so here's a little of what I think that happens in the movie: Mia is possessed since the first time she used the hand (they say she went over the 90 seconds, so we can assume that the spirit that was with her was already trying to stay) and thats why she started heaving alcinations. Because the spirits were in her mind, they knew her traumas, so they used an image of her mother to make her more sugestable to the things they wanted to do (kill riley for exemple because they liked him and wanted to kill him while he was possessed). So in fact her "mother" talking to her while riley was playing, was actualy just a way that the spirits used to make her convince the others to let riley use the hand for more time, so he could go over the 90 seconds and then get possessed, since the spirits already knew Mia's mind. In the end she's totaly overwelmed and instead of killing riley she ends up killing herself maybe to get away of all that pressure and chaos. The only problem is that she didn't realized she was possessed since the beginning, and by killing herself the spirits now have her in the hand. I think maybe the hospital scene after her death was real but she saw that from the "dead" perspective, so riley would have been cured, her father would be alive (elevator scene) and probably a long time has passed since she died, because we see a total diferent group in probably a total diferent country using the hand and making contact with Mia...

    as fucked up as it seems, i want a replica of the hand with all the writing on it because that's such a cool horror icon to me.

    The water sound effects tells you who the spirit really is. It's not her mother its the spirit whom she let in for the first time. I think the spirit can gain your memories as you let them inside your body. Its just so happen that the spirit was really interested with Riley, then began the trippy manipulation.

    This was one of the most traumatizing mainstream movies I’ve seen in a WHILE!! It was literally insane and I can’t stop thinking about it. Such an interesting take on possession/contact with the dead. Also kinda crazy, I watched this 2 days ago and now you’ve posted your reaction! I feel like I have telepathy 😅💕

    This is definitely my fave horror of the year. Seeing it in the theatre was WILD😅 some other A24 horror/thrillers you should check out if you haven’t: X and Pearl (X is a great slasher and Pearl being a prequel about the old lady in X and more drama/thriller and a character study type), Saint Maud (slow burn psychological thriller), Tusk (dark comedy/horror and not for everyone😅 but it’s iconic), Men (slow burn thriller and the end is 👀), The Witch (slow burn psychological horror but also historically accurate), and Beau Is Afraid (by the one and only Ari Aster😅)

    What pissed me off about this movie is the fact that all of this is easily proven to anyone, and the fact they don't tell an official so they aren't charged with serious crimes is beyond me. Also, they didn't even have to let the spirit into themselves! Like, not one person had to risk getting possessed in the entire film, and they could have still had a conversation with a dead person!

    The movie also illustrates the importance of family when healing from trauma (or drug abuse). If Mia's father had been there for her - being honest with her mothers passing - she probably would have survived because their bond would have been much stronger, and Mia wouldn't feel so lost.

    Riley didn’t have to die
    Someone comment in the movie that the effects of the possession will eventually fades… and that’s what happens
    The spirits were playing with her, cause as soon as she kills Riley, his soul is theirs - and they liked him 🫠😗

    The ending is so great but that better mean they make a second one where Mia tries to help from the otherside get people away from doing this because she knows all the way through what it can do to you and how bad it can really be.

    So my best guess is: remember how they say "we've never had anyone go over 90 seconds before u" or something like that? And in the beginning they said if u go over 90 secs they'll wanna stay. And if u die while they're in you, they'll have you forever. Well this is the play out of that

    It’s a detail that is easily missed but important: in the end, Mia throws herself onto the road instead of the teenager because her « mother's ghost » tells her, 'He will stay with us forever,' or something like that. For Mia, it sounds like the solution to finally be reunited with her mother and so she kills herself!
    Love your reactions ❤

    Duckett's brother, the guy who was stabbed in the beginning of the movie and survived says to Mia that the spirits hold gets weaker the less they use the hand. So the water logged spirit that she contacted first was tricking Mia because she kept using it. They wanted Riley too but since he wasn't using the hand they were losing their hold.

    It's awesome how this movie's a metaphor on drug addiction. Like, we think "How could someone try something like this that OBVIOUSLY it's dangerous?" Well, apparently this already happens and there's no need for a evil spirit's manipulation.
