Hello Teddies. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to ride as a passenger in a colleague's XK 120. A unique experience. The head-turning momentum among passers-by was considerable. Everyone looked at the car in which you were sitting on a platter. But that's okay, that's the way it has to be. Unfortunately, the nice man passed away a few years ago. May he rest in peace and his cars be in good hands.
I owned on of these old beauties back in '68. Driving it through the tunnel coming down from Santa Monica (CA) out into coast highway 1, in second gear was a religious experience. I did it whenever I could, and once the exhaust note even put a smile on the face of the radar cop skulking at the exit of the tunnel.
Back in 1974, I found one of these in a field west of Bozeman, MT. My E-Type ignition key even fit the lock! Unfortunately, I was just a poor college student and couldn't afford a project car at the time. I always enjoyed blasting through the Boston harbor tunnels with my'63 E-Type and hearing that sonorous exhaust note echo inside. Also, only wusses can't master a Moss box! Double-clutching is an art; and most of the fun of driving these vintage machines properly!
Man, every time you put one of these Jag XK videos out... i am just sitting here drooling on my keyboard. If someone said "pick a car", this would be it. Thank you for making these videos, they are an absolute blast. I think i want buy better headphones, just for this.
A couple years ago, I had the absolute pleasure of being offered a ride in a 1954 XK120 race car that had done the mille miglia and averaged a speed of almost 100mph. The experience was so raw, your legs flat out in front of you that you're basically lying down, the acceleration far more impressive than I was anticipating and the exhaust was intoxicatingly loud whilst the noise was still refined and beautiful. It was an unforgettable experience
I’ve seen someone drive this car before and I didn’t have the knowledge of it and now I do in my respect level for this vehicle hassignificantly increased. 👍
Wow, what a Beauty❤. I would much rather have an XK120 more than any modern Ferrari, Lambo, etc. Tedward has the best auto channel to me because of the eclectic mix of classics, moderns and oddities. 😻
Excellent drive, Tedward. I appreciate your clarification for people on what “knock off” style wheels are. I think car folks understand, but mere mortals hear “knock off” and think they’re cheap or unoriginal or somehow fakes. I appreciate that you advocate for car lovers by explaining these sort of details. Thanks man
I think one of these was the first video of yours I watched a few years ago, what struck me most was the sound (both because of how good the car sounds, and how well you capture it). Glad another Jag 6 is on the channel!
What a sound it makes! Tedward, you always manage to somehow get the feel of the car in the video so one can almost feel like a passenger. The camera angle and the excellent sound (clearly you understand how important the sound is) makes your videos extra good. On top of that the scenery is often really nice and sometimes remind me of my home area in Scandinavia. Thanks for all the brilliant videos and happy new year.
Never knew you couldn't yield right of way in the US. Super common in the UK, but I guess we need to do it because our small roads create awkard situations that require whoever has the better angle/access to move first to maintain flow. Super interesting.
You can and its totally fine and polite to do in safe situation...But this guy was making an unpredictably strange move on a road that didn't call for it. That's a good way to cause an accident
Fabulous sounding engine! That gearbox is such a win over the original 4-speed Moss transmission. It's not just synchro, it'd helical cut gears and 5th gear. What a sound. I had an XK120 FHC and later a DHC back in the early 1960s. It looked like you were shifting at about 4,000 rpm. The engine sounds very strong. You mentioned the steering and brakes. Are they original? Thanks for a wonderful drive. I like the way you drive that car, too. Wow! When you drove up the revs I nearly swooned.
Love it. It's got a similar straightpiped wail to my Alfa but with the extra burl of 2 more cylinders. Agreed on the gearbox. Driving the original is nice, but having to baby it into gear gets old quickly.
Beautiful Jag! Great vid, per usual. You look cold, Tom. I really, really want to be a legit Snowbird (via disposable wealth), but you need to move your arse to warmer pastures during the doldrums of Winter. I'm sure you can figure a way to offset.. or exceed.. the cost of such stuffs. CA & AZ looking perfect this time of year... Cheers.
Fantastic video! My Dad had a 120 back when they were new....had an opportunity to get a 120 project in RI for 25k back in 2009...It was the steel wheel with skirts version....now wish we had bought...It needed everything but watching your video shows it would have been worth every bit of the time and money...
Really like this one (and your driving videos are sweet). I didn't think chrome wires were available back then, but love the look. I have the TKX in one of my cars and it is incredible. One thing I have noticed is these look tiny online, and then quite larger than expected when you see one in person. Thanks for posting this!
Great drive Bud...roadster in 0 degree weather ! re the heating issues with those cars; I remember seeing a photo of an XK 120 that Von Dutch of all people had customized with additional cooling vents; it looked well done and effective, but the aluminium rad upgrade is a much better solution. Liked the "back seat" camera angle
Hey Tedward, loving the new camera angles, as my only recommendation; the point of POV is the immersion, so I would suggest keeping the POV as full one-takes and using the alternate angles more like chapter divisions.
This is very cool and why I follow this channel. I doubt I’ll have the opportunity to drive a Jaguar XK120 in my lifetime, this is about as close as I’ll get.
Hi Tedward enjoying your channel and I like the new camera angles. Jags are a favourite and this one has the sound and great gear stick set up.. greetings from a very hot Perth Western Australia
Every time it's something truely special (at least to me), it's bond group. I also along with probably many others appreciate how much of this video you just let the car do the talking, that exhaust note is incredible.
Lovely car. It amuses me that you mention the stake aimed straight at you in the form of the steering column - just be glad that the steering wheel boss (the centre part) is not the original - that was a large bulging hard plastic and metal cone with a sharp end, which looked like it was actually designed to inflict maximum damage in an accident. But we didn't care, when I was young these were old and cheap and fast.
You can talk about V8's (there are a few whose sound I love), or V12's (I'm not so keen on how they sound), or even a V10, but *nothing* will ever beat the snarl of a straight 6. Nothing.
I live in Mass. How dare somebody pull over and let you pass. That person is ruining our reputation of rude, nasty, frown on the face miserable people when we're on the road. (they must have moved here from somewhere else). But after hearing that inline 6, life is still grand!
TED, have you ever seen the 1971 Clint Eastwood scary drama “Play Misty For Me”? He drives a dark blue one these around stunning Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula. It’s one of his best movies, although it’s worth watching seeing it just listen to the Jaguar rev.
"You can't just yield right of way like that" FUCKIN THANK YOU, I swear that crap drives me up a tree! Modern cars are so capable and yet modern people are so completely inept its actually scary...
What modern cars lack is style and emotion. This car oozes both. The reality is that SUV bring in the cash. But if Jag built something like this...and a stylish SUV that would be something. Or maybe the parent company could let Jag be a boutique brand and focus on a few niche models.
My grandpa basically has this exactly spec but its an xk150. Beautifully restored before my grandpa passed away. Wish I could drive it but sadly I am too tall and the steering wheel hits my knees.
Looks and sounds gorgeous, I think the Australian Chrysler Charger E49 slant 6 inline engine would have it covered for sound, but that’s all opinion based.
This car & drivetrain exist because of pre-War Mille Miglia-winning BMW 328. Jag produced this engine for decades, eventually doubling it up to create V12, even before BMW did same with their I6. Produced for sedan, success of XK120 show car led to years of production before being succeeded by legendary E-Type.
@@TedwardDrivesthe owner who had all the restoration work done had a set of very practical updates made to make this XK safer and more enjoyable to drive. These are fairly common, but expensive, upgrades appreciated people who use these cars regularly.
My uncle Eduardo had one a at time when imported cars (not assembled in México) had to pay a 100% tax to be imported. My father had a Mercedes but it was a sedan, not a sports car. My father enjoyed taking the Mercedes to a speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km/hr)

What a beauty.
There’s something just so right about how these sound. Glorious.

Terrific Video. Your narration is as good as your driving, which is, to say, top notch.
Good show, old boy!
Thank you!!
An EV will never sound like a Jaguar inline 6.
Never
Edit: An ev will never sound.
