Billie Holiday is on the same level, and she was doing it while addicted to heroin, which Ella managed to avoid. That said, both were tremendous. I was fortunate to see Ella live, with the Duke Ellington band. Both the best at what they did.
The only way this could have gotten ANY dislikes are a few out of style items like "a cigarette" or "long excited cables" or "Ile de France", otherwise the sentiments like "candle light on little corner tables" and the great rhymes like "next apartment" and "heart meant" are timeless! Unfortunately, one must have experienced a loss of love whether by foolishness or death to really appreciate this truly great song. Ella's version is the greatest!
thank god for all of you who still appreciate this music. please go and listen to the jazz band playing at your local bar. they need you more than ever.
Someone said that the lyrics of These Foolish Things could have been written by the poet Louis MacNeice ... They have a entre-deux-guerre flavour ... *The winds of March that made my heart a dancer* and *The lsle de France with all the gulls around it* and *The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations*. No one sings it like Ella or Jean Sablon or Nat King Cole.
Yes, she is so good that it brings tears to my eyes. After this go and listen to her 7 minute Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered by Rogers and Hart. The melody is great but listen to the words of Hart who was gay. The words can be seen for hetero or gay. Brilliant lyrics.
Even this song is almost 8:00 long I don't care. I love this song it has more verses than Emmy Rossum's version but whatever both Ella and Emmy did an amazing job recording this song.
Daniel pepper Not true. Try Melody Gardot, Michael Buble, Amy Winehouse, Karise Eden, Caro Emerald. If you think everything today is horrendous, then you're not looking hard enough. Of course, the classic Ella, Nina Simone and others are just classics for good reason :)
There was nobody like Ella really; there are of course other greats such as Norma Winstone and although I wince at efforts by Bryan Ferry and Rod Stewart at least they bring quality tunes to an audience which otherwise would never bother to go there. By the way I struggle to recall another song which has two options for the bridge... think about it.
If there is a better singer than Ella, I haven’t heard her. And the lyrics are magnificent!

Absolute perfection - and ALL the lyrics!!!
I love the patience she has to sing, without any sign of rush...
My Mother used to sing this song. These foolish things...
The incomparable Ella Fitzgerald singing a haunting love song written by a lover of the incomparable Anna May Wong... it doesn't get any better.

It doesn't get any better than this! Such fantastic words rendered by such a smooth delivery!
Nuff said! Ella is the Queen 👑

+malik renner . "that guy" is named Dizzy Gillespie. But we all lose it in the presence of such beauty.
Yes, he's just mesmerised. Love it :)
Great comment!!!
That's the great Dizzy Gillespie.
Guy behind her is her husband bassist Ray Brown. Played with the Duke of Ellington.

Great to hear the three different choruses (plus the verse).
3 dislikes. I think it is safe to say these 3 people have failed the android test.

Блин, так жаль, что я потерял виниловую пластинку с песнями Эллы в "Савое"... Там те же песни, но как-то по-другому...
