Culturally we value gold the most. Like any other country India does have a wealth polarization, but middle class is in much better shape compared to western economies currently because inflation is not as bad. India’s past governance policies were aligned with socialism, but due to high level of corruption the people remained poor for a long time. The new government focused on a lot of social issues and promoted industrialization and capitalism a lot more compared their predecessors. India still has a lot of challenges to get through but the west looks at India as supply chain diversification.
Going back to gold, the government does not benefit from the gold that Indian general public holds. Gold has anti inflation value and held in higher standards since Indian currency is impacted by the economic output. The history behind US gold is back in the day US made it illegal for general public to buy gold over certain amount and the central government bought all the gold to put into the reserves. With that gold they were able to borrow money to boost the economy and today US government had the highest amount of gold reserves. To put into context if Indian government bought all the gold from Indian public and temple, they would have close to 3 trillion or more in the reserves putting them above US. All in all gold is king over cash.
All Indians have gold and not 14 k or 18 k but we only use 22 or 24 k gold and still take good care of it.

You can visit any place in India and they’ll treat you respectfully but this modernization and greed for money turned people into scammers. Although nowadays due to IT revolution, the information available on your phone helps you to find your way. You can start with big cities like Mumbai and Delhi to be familiar with the culture and all, but it’s truly different in every part of India. I’m sure you’ll love India.
