This is one of those things that I love about the Muppets. It takes all of about 2 seconds for this woman to forget that there is a 50 year old guy kneeling down in front of her controlling Elmo.
Kevin Clash was the king of that. I got to observe a few days on the Dinosaurs set, and one time there was a break but they couldn't let Kevin out of the baby's stroller (it would be too time consuming). So he was folded up unseen inside the stroller, working the baby dinosaur throughout the break. There were two female staffers there the whole time and Baby was talking to them and making them laugh and one gal was even patting its head. You just get totally drawn in
I remember there was a story Alice Cooper told about his time on the Muppet show. He would get an idea to do something, and then he would talk to Kermit as if he were real and then remember that he should be talking to Jim Henson.
Once on the tonight show they accidentally put the microphone on the puppet instead of the puppeteer:) did you watch him in the Elmo documentary on Netflix? It was really good
Agreed, the most lovable muppet with the least annoying chipmunk voice. I just thought of something... What is Elmo anyway or the cookie monster?? R they aliens from outer space?
I tried to keep my eyes on Kevin Clash, but I had a hard time trying. He's so brilliant on being Elmo, that despite the fact that he's sitting there, not even trying to hide, he draws the attention towards Elmo. Wow... He's just fantastic.
Yes! We can clearly see the performers but once they start performing their characters, it's like they're not even there! That's the craft Jim Henson perfected.
I once watched a play with one puppeteer and several puppets. The puppeteer played a role himself as well. At one point his and one of the puppet characters were in a huge fight. Everyone was looking back and forth between them. It was amazing
You see the man walk around the podium with a piece of fuzzy cloth in his hands. You see the man sit down. You stop seeing the human the ABSOLUTE MOMENT Elmo pats the woman's belly. And the human guiding Elmo ceases to be. THIS is why I love the Muppets. Old school Jim Henson or new-aged muppet handlers ... they carry some beautiful magic with them.
I have that every time I see puppeteers, and I'm only now seeing shows with puppeteers, and that's not just for His Dark Materials style shows where they may well control their own puppet/Daemon 'doing their own thing' WHILE THEY'RE TALKING. That's practice. We had a show of Goodnight Mr Tom and the pupeteer for Sammy the sheepdog was fantastic. So much movement. I hope those lasses (mum and daughter) are doing well~
@@MrParkerman6 Slight issue, the case was dismissed and no one else came forward with any other allegations. We may never be sure if he was or wasn't a predator, but we do know he did retire in order not cause any issues with the Jim Henson company, so.
I was a mascot at the mall for a few years. my character was an 8-year old Sea Lion named Shelly. I had to act very childish, endearing, and girly (swinging my dress, skipping in a giant mascot outfit, pretending to be bashful, stopping outside store windows and pointing at beautiful things etc) anyway I had my friends come pick me up one day and they wanted me to put on the costume for them so I did, and I did a little act for them. when I took off the costume they were just blown away "Like, I knew you were in there, but I just couldn't see it once you started moving and I totally forgot it was you!"
I cosplay and once you get into character, you really put on a (fun) mask. Sometimes you can even do it without make up, just by facial expressions. I sometimes amuse people I know, by imitating..well, other people that I (or we) know. There's a woman that pouts a bit, whenever she speaks. There's a girl with a sad voice that always sounds sad, even when she's happy. And there's a guy with a scream-ey voice that has a very confused face. With a bit of effort, you don't need a costume or movement, you can only use the facial expressions and that's enough. It reminds me a bit of the SNL skit, where Kirsten Wiig tries to imitate Drew Barrymore and barely needs more than a wig on her head, to create a (slightly exaggerated) impression of Drew. The title of the video is Bein' Quirky With Zooey Deschanel (Featuring Sofia Vergara) - Saturday Night Live
I was a part time exhibition guide for a transformers exhibition. One of the higher ups saw that I was tall and kind built so he asked me if was ok with putting on a bumblebee suit and walk around the exhibit for an hour or so every day in the afternoon when school is out. I thought fuck it, why not. Best decision. Bumblebee can also act lik a kid and get away with it. So I'll just sneak up on kids looking up at the giant autobot statues and wait, pretending to also be interested in the statue. And they'll turn around and usually shout in excitement. And then I'll act all shocked. It's entertaining af for everyone, the parents, too. Even if the kid gets scared I can just act all meek and dejected and slink back behind the curtains. I swear, that was the most wholesome, fun gig I had. I didn't even have to talk since lorewise (at least in the Bayverse), Bumblebee doesn't talk. Just put the suit, walk around all cool. Interact with the kids, give them high fives or play paddy cakes with them. 10/10.
@@superrswalkthrougn absolutely THIS! the amount of kids I got to interact with and see their happy faces as they hugged me omg. I would always take a knee when dealing with shy kids, to get on their level and would wave at them from afar and then pretend to be all bashful and hiding my eyes (on top my head) and I remember this one little girl I did that a few times but she wasn't going for it yet kept following me and then finally she just ran into my arms and gave me the biggest hug. it was so cute!! the worst part is definitely how hot it gets, every minute in the suit we had to be out of it. best job ever tho, being able to run around, be silly and take photos and hug people all day

It’s so strange how powerful this can be. Like as an adult, I know it’s just a puppet being controlled by a man. But the pure joy on peoples faces when Elmo starts to talk. It was like watching him come to life. Like a whole new person walked in the room. It’s amazing really.

The history of the character holds so much of the weight but his performance is the key, and his amazing soul to do this. Kevin Clash
I thought maybe seeing the puppet put on would ruin the magic. It didn't. My first word was Elmo, and I'll always have a special place in my heart for him. ❤
I love that the puppeteers can actually make others see puppets more like sentient beings than just crafted dolls. That is a sign that its truly a good character and that your a good puppeteer since puppets are made to seem alive than lifeless.
