Ronnie your guitar work on Hackney Diamonds on songs like Bite My Head Off, Whole Wide World, Mess it Up, and Live By The Sword are proof that you can teach a young dog (by Stones standards at least) new tricks, as your playing continues to evolve and offer some fresh new piece of criminally underestimated complexity, yet without all the notoriety that is typically reserved for “shredders”, many of whom are just shredding cheese. And boring cheese at that like Colby.
You’re the secret weapon man. I saw you support Joe Walsh at Phoenix Oktoberfest in 1988. We were in the 1st row. And I got a real good look at not only the beautiful lady in black lace you were with, but more importantly I think your guitar playing. It was a revelation. You went from rhythm master who can solo a wee bit when needs be, to the guy who could shred the sharp cheddar just as well as Mick Taylor, but chooses instead to be a more significant part of the rhythm section, and just show flashes of this ability, just to blow people’s minds here and there.
Also, your engaging personality doesn’t fade when you walk on stage. Being in the front row you were like right there. And I’ve been front row at other shows before. But I was 19 in 1988 so that might’ve been my first front row not sure but in any case other artist will look at you, when you’re up real close to the stage, with the 5 mile stare. Or they might check your hot girlfriend out while completely ignoring you. But you Instead acknowledged most of us in the front row. You like made some kind of meaningful eye contact, pointed at us, smiled at us whatever like, it was really thoughtful of you to do that, and I’ve not experienced anything quite like that to this day. However I didn’t have my hot girlfriend with me for that show. So who knows maybe if I had I wouldn’t be writing this right now, or could be writing something of a much different nature!
Anyway, I was thinking you should do a solo album and just call it Ronnie Wood In Plain Sight. Because your extreme talent is hiding in plain sight. Kinda pokey maybe but I guess as long as you don’t call something like Rough Diamond or Polished Stone I’ll be OK with it.
