Cal, thank you for these videos as they are very informative. We been to Thailand 3 times and each time we learn new things making our visits enjoyable. We spent 17 days in Bangkok on our last visit and did learn how to ride the AC blue buses.
Excellent vlog with solid advice on the different modes of transport in Bangkok and very clearly presented. A must see for every traveler to this great city!
Twenty-year traveler to BKK here, but a fairly new subscriber. Great information always. NOTE: The taxis from the airport always ask to take the elevated toll roads. It allows them to do a quicker drop off and return to the airport for another fare. But, I've found that if I opt for those toll roads, the drivers travel WAY too fast for my comfort. I usually opt for the driver to stay on the surface streets. However, when I am pressed for time and DO opt for the elevated toll roads, I buckle my seatbelt and ALWAYS sit directly behind the driver; the steering wheel and the driver's body afford me a bit more protection if he loses control.
Thanks for the kind words. Definitely true on the maniacal toll road driving. Had a Bolt the other day in central Bangkok… said yes to the toll and immediately regretted it as the guy started weaving through traffic without a care in the world.
Really comprehensive video that I would send to any friends visiting bkk! Well done, keep it up! Fun fact, MRT Pink and Yellow lines are actually operated by BTS, which is why they accept rabbit cards, but they're owned by the MRT. Also, black coloured taxis are exempt from a meter, but there aren't that many of them anyway
Correct. I didn’t cover a couple as they are less tourist oriented and I wanted to cover how to use each type of transportation. I probably should have mentioned the Gold Line with Icon Siam though. Thanks for the input!
hey cal, love your videos! I'm from edmonton AB. coming to thaiiland for the first time in Nov. your videos are super helpful. Its nice trusting another fellow canadian lol
Hi Cal, we found you a few months ago and have been following your videos ever since. Super easy and thorough to navigate thru Bkk with your videos. Thank you so much. We’re be there in two weeks and while we’ve been to Thailand many times , we always appreciate your suggestions/overview on all issues surrounding BKK.
Fellow Edmontonian. Will also be in Thai in November 2024, but have been many times over 20 years. I think you will love it. I know I do. Good luck! (Go Oilers, go!)
Hi Cal, I'm studying Bangkok and Thailand with the goal of future immigration and subscribe to most UA-camr channels, but yours is the highest quality of them all. Each video contains clear, accurate, and concise information equivalent to five videos from other UA-camrs combined. A quick question regarding your explanation of the MRT. Each line requires a separate ticket, but when purchasing a cash card, is it valid for all MRT lines?
This is the best transportation vlog I've seen for Bangkok. Thanks for making this one. I seem to recall that the BTS and MRT systems allowed you to bring a folding bike on the trains. Do you know if this is still true?
Hi Cal, I’m watching your video here in Austria as I prepare for my first trip to Thailand. I’m really enjoying it; it’s packed with great information! Could you, when sharing details on public transportation payment options, also mention if credit or debit cards are accepted, and if there’s free Wi-Fi available? Thanks a lot! Andy
Thanks for the kind words. You can use major credit and debit cards on the MRT with tap pay… but depending on your bank policies, you may pay significantly more due to exchange rates and fees. There isn’t any free Wi-Fi but it’s very easy and cheap to setup a SIM card. I’ll cover that in a video soon. Cheers
Lots of great information in the video! One quick question though. I think you can use a credit/debit card to tap in and out of an MRT/subway journey, but is that fare more or less compared to when you buy a token with cash or buy the pre-paid cash card? Which is the best value? I'll be there in a couple of weeks and I'll looking forward to trying the khlongs!
You can use a credit or debit card to tap in with the MRT but it may be subject to additional fees and exchange rate costs depending on your banks policies. If you get a particularly good rate it could be good value, but normally that will be the most expensive option. Unfortunately the cash card doesn’t have any discounts either.. just added convenience of not waiting in lines.
Hi bro! I'm not sure if you know this or not But nowadays you can buy cross-line train tickets on some lines such as Purple line with Blue Line or Yellow line, pink line, with BTS but I know it can be cumbersome for tourists because them have to remember which lines they can buy to cross which.
Landing there next week from Don Mueng airport Going to stay across from Iconsiam. What's the best way to get there and back to the airport? Great info BTW and thanks for this!
Using a ride hailing app or taxi would definitely be best as there isn't a direct train connection between Don Mueang and Icon Siam... for public transport you'd need to transfer between lines 3 to 4 times, depending on which route you take. Not ideal! Cheers
My very first visit to Bangkok I used the airport taxi to get to my hotel. The driver happily turned on his meter when I asked, but the meter was rigged, and I ended up paying about $55-$60. when it should have only cost me about $17-$18. I was pretty irritated once I figured out what was happening, but as I didn't want to cause a scene, I just bit my tongue, but that ruined taxis for me. Now I just use Grab to get to my hotel from the airport.
It depends… some drivers will add the charge if they pay it. I’ve always just paid cash directly and it was never added to the Grab charge. Sounds like it could be a sneaky scam by some drivers tho. Thanks for the tip!
Last taxi from airport did not use meter. Had to report him which was extremely difficult try it. The tourist police line did not do English. After several hours of work I finally got notice that he was suspended for a month I don't know if that's true or not.
@@thebangkokguideAye Cal, subscriber and fellow full-time travelers here. I assume it's the same for Siracha. There are buses that go directly from the airport to Siracha?
As a Thai, this is an excellent info and very well done for exploring Bangkok.

Unfortunately this has become more common… I’ve dealt with fast meters in the past as well. Very annoying. Thanks for the input!
What is the major difference between BTS and MRT? Aren’t they “duplicative”? Can you use credit cards on both?
Hi, I was wondering what if you still have a drink that you hadn't finished?
You can close it and hold it… or just hold it down. But when you enter the BTS or MRT there are normally garbages where people throw out drinks etc
Grab will add the freeway tolls to the bill, don't pay the driver otherwise you'll end up paying twice..I've noticed this scam in the last 6 mths
It depends… some drivers will add the charge if they pay it. I’ve always just paid cash directly and it was never added to the Grab charge. Sounds like it could be a sneaky scam by some drivers tho. Thanks for the tip!
Mrt takes visa which can save you time taking rail link to airport

Sorry to hear that. At this point I feel that it's better to just avoid taxis altogether. Just not worth the hassle. Thanks for the input!

The one big failure of public transportation in Bangkok is, it's not 24 hours. This is a major city of the world, why?!
24 hour public transportation would be a big plus. I remember visiting Berlin and the 24 hour trains were great.
