The video is perfect. I'd like to add the information that you can use your credit card (with an EMV sign-almost all are equipped nowadays) directly with the metro gate of the blue, yellow, pink, and red lines. For BTS green lines, you can bind the rabbit card (costing 100 THB) with your credit card using the app as well. Therefore, if you have a credit card, you almost haven't to worry about the metro ticket vending machines in Bangkok (except the Airport rail link).
Cal, thank you for these videos as they are very informative. We been to Thailand 3 times and each time we learn new things making our visits enjoyable. We spent 17 days in Bangkok on our last visit and did learn how to ride the AC blue buses.
Really comprehensive video that I would send to any friends visiting bkk! Well done, keep it up! Fun fact, MRT Pink and Yellow lines are actually operated by BTS, which is why they accept rabbit cards, but they're owned by the MRT. Also, black coloured taxis are exempt from a meter, but there aren't that many of them anyway
Twenty-year traveler to BKK here, but a fairly new subscriber. Great information always. NOTE: The taxis from the airport always ask to take the elevated toll roads. It allows them to do a quicker drop off and return to the airport for another fare. But, I've found that if I opt for those toll roads, the drivers travel WAY too fast for my comfort. I usually opt for the driver to stay on the surface streets. However, when I am pressed for time and DO opt for the elevated toll roads, I buckle my seatbelt and ALWAYS sit directly behind the driver; the steering wheel and the driver's body afford me a bit more protection if he loses control.
Thanks for the kind words. Definitely true on the maniacal toll road driving. Had a Bolt the other day in central Bangkok… said yes to the toll and immediately regretted it as the guy started weaving through traffic without a care in the world.

Hi Cal, we found you a few months ago and have been following your videos ever since. Super easy and thorough to navigate thru Bkk with your videos. Thank you so much. We’re be there in two weeks and while we’ve been to Thailand many times , we always appreciate your suggestions/overview on all issues surrounding BKK.
Fellow Edmontonian. Will also be in Thai in November 2024, but have been many times over 20 years. I think you will love it. I know I do. Good luck! (Go Oilers, go!)
As a Thais here. Your video are so in depth. Good work! Metro train in Thailand still lack unified payment card which is annoying. At least.. some lines actually can pay fares to tap out at different line, no need to pay separately including Blue Purple, Green(BTS) Pink Both 4 lines can be interchangeable like Siam station. Uniquely on Green and Yellow line, You can purchase to ride across both lines at once but require to tap in/out only at BTS/MRT Samrong
Thanks for the kind words and additional information! Changes in the metro system happen quickly here. I’m sure they will sort out a unified card at some point. Cheers
Your videos are awesome. Top notch, detailed info. I'm planning to visit for a couple of weeks later this year, and your videos have done a ton to prepare and familiarize me with how things work. Bravo and kudos.

My goodness ... You are great .... Cal ... So many informations, details which many Thais did not know 👍 Thank You for all info with excellent video ...!!!!
Excellent vlog with solid advice on the different modes of transport in Bangkok and very clearly presented. A must see for every traveler to this great city!
Correct. I didn’t cover a couple as they are less tourist oriented and I wanted to cover how to use each type of transportation. I probably should have mentioned the Gold Line with Icon Siam though. Thanks for the input!
This is the best transportation vlog I've seen for Bangkok. Thanks for making this one. I seem to recall that the BTS and MRT systems allowed you to bring a folding bike on the trains. Do you know if this is still true?
Pink and Yellow Line are BTS same to Green Line so you can buy one ticket from pink and connect to green or yellow line. Blue and Purple are MRT can use one ticket. Dark and Bright Red can connect with one ticket too.
Hi Cal, I'm studying Bangkok and Thailand with the goal of future immigration and subscribe to most UA-camr channels, but yours is the highest quality of them all. Each video contains clear, accurate, and concise information equivalent to five videos from other UA-camrs combined. A quick question regarding your explanation of the MRT. Each line requires a separate ticket, but when purchasing a cash card, is it valid for all MRT lines?
Hi bro! I'm not sure if you know this or not But nowadays you can buy cross-line train tickets on some lines such as Purple line with Blue Line or Yellow line, pink line, with BTS but I know it can be cumbersome for tourists because them have to remember which lines they can buy to cross which.
Hi Cal, I’m watching your video here in Austria as I prepare for my first trip to Thailand. I’m really enjoying it; it’s packed with great information! Could you, when sharing details on public transportation payment options, also mention if credit or debit cards are accepted, and if there’s free Wi-Fi available? Thanks a lot! Andy
Thanks for the kind words. You can use major credit and debit cards on the MRT with tap pay… but depending on your bank policies, you may pay significantly more due to exchange rates and fees. There isn’t any free Wi-Fi but it’s very easy and cheap to setup a SIM card. I’ll cover that in a video soon. Cheers
Great info and very well structured. So, is there no way to leave the airport without cash? Is there no way to get sky train tickets with card or pay a taxi/grab only by card (fees included)? Also, i see a card option at the metro directly at the gate, does that not work with foreign cards?
(almost) unify ticket there = credit card (*except only for green lines, gold line, and Airport rail link*) You can use your foreign/local VISA or Mastercard credit card to tap on the ticket gates. (debit cards are not accepted) MRT cash card can be used seamlessly between blue line and purple line BTS's "Rabbit" cash card can be used at green lines, gold line, pink line, yellow line
No mention of buses from Don Mueang airport to the BTS MoChit. Thanks, that's what I use. Keep it quiet. You don't need to change systems from the BTS to the Pink line. Do not offer your seat to young children. A child can stand on the floor, there is no need for them to stand on the seats. A few of my own observations. But a very good round up of Bangkoks systems.
You don't need to buy a new ticket if you transfer between the MRT Blue and Purple Line. Also you don't need to buy a new ticket if you travel between BTS and MRT Pink/Yellow Line as both new MRT lines operate by BTS's sister companies. You can use Rabbit Card and EMV credit cards on both Pink and Yellow Line as well.
Lots of great information in the video! One quick question though. I think you can use a credit/debit card to tap in and out of an MRT/subway journey, but is that fare more or less compared to when you buy a token with cash or buy the pre-paid cash card? Which is the best value? I'll be there in a couple of weeks and I'll looking forward to trying the khlongs!
You can use a credit or debit card to tap in with the MRT but it may be subject to additional fees and exchange rate costs depending on your banks policies. If you get a particularly good rate it could be good value, but normally that will be the most expensive option. Unfortunately the cash card doesn’t have any discounts either.. just added convenience of not waiting in lines.
Landing there next week from Don Mueng airport Going to stay across from Iconsiam. What's the best way to get there and back to the airport? Great info BTW and thanks for this!
Using a ride hailing app or taxi would definitely be best as there isn't a direct train connection between Don Mueang and Icon Siam... for public transport you'd need to transfer between lines 3 to 4 times, depending on which route you take. Not ideal! Cheers
First visit to Bangkok next year. Only two days to explore. We want to use the train. Is there a document or link that shows which highlights must see places and which stations to jump off at
I'm not sure of any specific resource. Perhaps that is a video I will work on as it would be helpful. But with two days you would probably want to take a look at what interests you the most as Bangkok is quite big to cover in such a short time!
Hi Cal, can you explain me if it's worth to use credit card to pay MRT traveling ? Why you haven't talk about this solution for MRT payment ? Do you recommend this kind of payment instead of rabbit card ? And the last one, do you know if the ARL airport rail link accept crdit card payment ?

Last taxi from airport did not use meter. Had to report him which was extremely difficult try it. The tourist police line did not do English. After several hours of work I finally got notice that he was suspended for a month I don't know if that's true or not.

You can use a credit card on the MRT for the tap pay. Overall they are similar but operated by different companies.
Hi, I was wondering what if you still have a drink that you hadn't finished?
You can close it and hold it… or just hold it down. But when you enter the BTS or MRT there are normally garbages where people throw out drinks etc
Mrt takes visa which can save you time taking rail link to airport

If you have a visa with no foreign transaction fees, is there any downside to just tapping your visa in the MRT?
No, this should work without any other fees. Those cards are great.

Only on the MRT. You tap it on the upper turnstile as I mentioned.
