    As a truck driver, I've pulled all kinds of trailers. From 53 ft all the way down to 8 ft utilities. This is by far the absolute best looking and looks like it functions extremely well and looks very sturdy also. Would love to buy one of these at some point. Finally a smaller trailer that wont beat the absolute living hell out of whatever your hauling

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому +1

      so, the problem here is if a bag does blow, and we have never had one blow in four years with hard use and very adverse conditions :-) even if you lock the wheel down so that it’s on the ground in a fixed position you still have a leak out of the bag, and as a result, the entire side will drop, so the solution is to simply have taps on each of the feeders to the airbags, and that particular tap can be switched off that being the case, the wheel can simply stay in the down position and follow along where ever the trailer goes so, locking the wheel in any position, if a bag should get a hole in, it doesn’t solve the problem of the air escaping from the system, for that, we need a different solution and it simply means having a valve that can be switched off after the Airbag entry point, and we already have these on some trailers

      Thank you for your comment! Airbag suspension systems are becoming increasingly popular in a wide range of vehicles, including trailers, trucks, and passenger cars. The use of airbags in trailer suspension setups offers a number of advantages over traditional spring-based suspensions, including smoother ride quality, better load distribution, and improved stability.
      In terms of driving performance, airbag suspension trailers are known for their smooth and stable ride, even on rough or uneven roads. The use of airbags allows for greater control over the suspension, with adjustments made in response to changes in load distribution, road conditions, and driving dynamics. This results in improved handling and stability, particularly when cornering or navigating tight spaces. In other words you can't even feel the trailer following even a light towing vehicle :-)

      @@paradoxworkshop4659 The airbags themselves should not leak at all. All the leaks we have encountered occur at the connections. If we have a leak down over time and this does occur it's always a tube or connector. There are a good products available for these joints which will eliminate then.

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому +1

      Hi Christian, I really appreciate your idea about using a level sensor for this application. However, I wanted to let you know that there could be a small issue with that approach. For the suspension system to work effectively, the chassis needs to be able to move around freely. If we installed a level sensor, it would pick up all sorts of movements, making it tricky to calibrate and causing some complexity.
      Right now, we're setting the level by adjusting the ride height of the trailer when lifting stops, and it stays level until it's lowered again. This approach does keep the trailer level while it's traveling.
      Thanks so much for your input! We're always looking for ways to improve our processes, so please keep the ideas coming!

    Would be interesting also if you can do them with wider spacing and larger CAM rotation to suit "off road" so that you can get maximum clearance and ride height as well as lowering it to the ground?

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому +1

      James, we have found its very easy and light to maneuver by hand, much easier than a standard axle trailer, seems that the 4 independent wheels do not fight each other.

    @realvanman1 Рік тому

    Looks like a very nice unit. One thing I'm wondering about is how it behaves under heavy braking. It looks like braking (while moving forward) will remove weight from the front axle and add it to the rear, resulting in the brakes locking. I can see where you wouldn't put brakes on the rear axle as that would tend to flip the swing arm into the fully down position, lifting the trailer high into the air at that point.

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому +2

      The brakes are electric drums controlled by an electric variable braking power computer, which is in turn controlled from an app on a mobile device.
      Braking power can be adjust and preset for various loads and they are very effective at pulling up the trailer and the car. In fact if on a dirt or metal road you can brake the trailer only and allow it to pull the car to a stop if needed.
      When the brakes are applied the trailer will squat if anything and apply more braking to the front wheels. There is no axle rotation.

      In the EU, there are regulations that must be met when building a lightweight trailer for consumers to tow behind private cars. These regulations are designed to ensure the safety of the trailer and other road users.
      One important regulation is the maximum weight of the trailer, which cannot exceed 750 kg (including the weight of the trailer itself and its maximum load). Additionally, the trailer must be equipped with lights, brakes, and other safety features such as reflectors and rear view mirrors.
      Regarding the rear loading platform height and length, there are also regulations that apply. The height of the platform cannot exceed one meter from the ground, we are well below this and the length of the trailer cannot exceed 12 meters, we are under 6 meters. However, these regulations may vary depending on the specific country within the EU, so it's important to check with local authorities for more detailed information.
      You say this trailer will be illegal anywhere in Europe. Please send us the specific regulations that we fail to meet and we will do our best to make the necessary changes
      I think you will find that in an accident, the height of the rear loading platform on this trailer will go under any vehicle and a following car would ride up over the ramp. You are of course right to point out that a particularly small car such as the one driven by Scooby Doo or Mickey Mouse should take more care and not follow us on a public road. We will send them a letter of advise :-)

    Regulation might be different Aust vs NZ
    Aust Govt design regulation
    For trailers up 2 tonnes GTM, an efficient braking system is considered to have brakes operating on the wheels of at least one axle. Over-run brakes may only be used on trailers that do not exceed 2 tonnes GTM.
    Every trailer over 2 tonnes GTM must have brakes operating on all wheels. The brake system must cause immediate application of the trailer brakes in the event of the trailer becoming detached from the towing vehicle. Under these circumstances, the brakes must remain applied for at least 15 minutes.

      I'll do a video of car loading and show the door issue, The trailer has a remote controls on the airbags so you can drive on ,t eh oft the trailer while sitting in the car, which allows the doors to open so long as they are taller than the strong-back tie down rail.

  • @caminoprojectUS

    pretty cool little beasty of a trailer. the axial loading of the airbags hurts my brain to look at. I assume that they are overrated to compensate for the capacity loss. 30-40%? I also assume that there is a limiter plate on the swing arm in the advent of a bag failure.

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому

      All designed to handle any over leads that a user can impose on it including large pot holes and failures. No limit device on the leverage arms otr they would limit the movement of he trailers ability to raise or lower. Unless you know how to design one?

    • @caminoprojectUS
      @caminoprojectUS Рік тому

      @@ultimatemanshed eh its probably doable with out too much issue. effectiveness would be a different matter. the point of that design as you have it is to almost lay the frame on the ground. a u shaped bump stomp on the back side of the swing arm at a location that would catch the frame in the advent of a bag failure. would add a fair amount of complexity considering they need to be different for each arm. probably only needed on a pair of the arms though to acheive the effect. to the question of the effectiveness. would only really serve to allow it to be towed unladen to be repaired.,

    The Air bag setup it great, it’s used on 99% of road transport in some way now. One thing I did see was the lack of shocks. It would travel a lot nice on the road if you added them or do you find it’s ok…. That ply looks nice but we have found it only lasts a few year and she toast, It seams to start coming apart. Great trailer though, well done.

    Those airbags are the same type used on Semi's/Lorries. They will last for a long time as long as the rubber keeps up. I personally would swap the bags with firestone/Neway/holland hitch, but that my personal spiel.

    Is there any way in locking it at a certain height? What if there is an air leak in the system, then the whole trailer rides on the ground. Am I missing something?

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому

      You are not missing anything, a leak will certainly let the trailer down. however.. we have not have many leaks. we solved those problem some time ago by redesigning and installer higher quality air tubes and fittings. Now all of our fittings are rated 1000PSI and we operate at no greater than 180PSI.
      Any air leaks are very probably a loose air fittings that can be found and tighten up with a basic tool set.

    BUT:
    What happens when there is lost air pressure during driving? For E.g. something will break on the airflow system, so it just gets lowered? This I see as a big danger. There should be some blocking mechanism when lifted or the possibility to lock the position as lifted. Just to get low unlock/remove some mechanisms for safety.
    But the really nice proof of concept. :)

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому

      The suspension goes to the ground and you have to fix it. pretty much like a normal trailer if yo get a flat tire or broken axle or spring. However nothing happens in an explosive way, its usually a very slow leak at a connection, not the bags and it might take several days to go down.

    If there is a air leak you cant move the trailer, it should have some locking device for the ride high so can drive with no air….

    • @ultimatemanshed
      @ultimatemanshed  Рік тому

      If there is an air leak yo cannot lift the trailer back up to lock it unless you use a jack. However, the only airleaks we have had over 3 years of operation are joints, not the airbags themselves and these joints can be nipped up with a spanner. No doubt we will lose an airbag one day and you will have to simply drag the trailer off the road while you get a new airbag onto it, which can be fitted in about 30 minutes. One advantage is that the trailer is complete flat underneath, nop axles or anything else protruding so if you did need to drag it , no road or trailer damage ;-)
