There is another cinematic you could watch "FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn - A New Beginning" the first 5 minutes are the same as Flames of Truth, but with a different ending. Enjoyed the reaction. Greetings from Germany ^^

Lol you probably watched the Heavensward trailer, but just letting you know the trailer has major, major spoilers for the end of A Realm Reborn, so if you ever plan to play the game, I would suggest not doing it.
And oh, by the way, starting on August 11, FFXIV is free to play up to the end of Heavensward. ARR is also getting a revamp of the quests, making them much less numerous than before. It'll be the best time to try it out.

Something that I didn't see people mention in the comments. When 1.0 was announced to be shut down for relaunch of ARR, a final questline was released. In a part of it, Louisoux (the old wizard guy) sends you to pray to 12 different stones marked with the symbols of The Twelve (the gods of Eorzea) in an attempt to stop the coming doom, which you can see activating at 4:55. As others mentioned, the first part of this cinematic played when the servers went down, so at the time it seemed like the players efforts had been in vain

Okay, I notice a lot of people didn't go into details, so I'm headed in Major Spoiler territory in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....
    ...
    Everyone gone?
    Good.
So, old dude is Lousoix, an archmage. The dragon is Bahamut (kinda, more like a twisted recreation of him that's been imprisoned for thousands of years... fully aware). He's been freed by an idiot who thinks he can control him (spoiler alert: he couldn't). Now, this Bahamut is a kind of summoned deity called a Primal. They're a conceptual entity that draws on the aether (basically mana in any other fantasy setting) of the world to sustain its presence in our world. He was imprisoned, because only one can be summoned at a time, if he de-rezzed, some idiot might summon him again.
So, as to what's going on. The armies fighting are the Eorzean Alliance (the good guys), and the Garlean Empire (the bad guys). A rogue Imperial is the one who freed Bahamut, fyi. Once freed, Bahamut kills all the bitches, regardless of the flag they're flying. So Loisoix's students, pray to the gods of Eorzea in an attempt to invoke their power to re-imprison Bahamut. The trick is, if they do it too well, they may summon them in Primal Form too, and that would be disastrous (the amount of aether they'd eat would be an environmental and magical catastrophe as bad or worse than what's currently going on).
So they have to hold back, meaning the attempt fails spectacularly. With no other recourse left, Louisoix uses his power to fling the heroes in the trailer (known as the Warriors of Light, aka The PCs) 5 years into the future, after this clusterfuck is over. Then he gathers up the remainder of the failed spell, channels all the gods' summoned power into himself, going Super Saiyan on Bahamut, taking them both out in the process. Or so everyone thinks. For some reason, after the battle, no can remember the details of what happened, or the identities of the Warriors of Light.
This is all further explained and elaborated on in the first Raid series, "The Coils of Bahamut." That is where the 2nd half of this trailer comes from. It's a cinematic that reveals to the player what happened after they were flung forward in time.

Actually, Bahamut was imprisoned because the Allagans wanted to draw on his massive quantities of aether as a power source. That was the purpose of the crystal tower, BTW. He was made into a battery, basically.
And what happened with Louisoix is a bit more complex than this. You see, the process of summoning a primal entails using large quantities of aether, normally stored in crystals, along with a ritual where the people who perform the summoning wills very strongly (normally the form of prayer) for the primal to come forth to help them. Now, The Cartenau flats were BRIMMING with crystals, and the desperate cries of help and desperation from all the people dying and seeing Bahamut essentially burning down the entire continent acted as an accidental, makeshift summoning ritual of sorts. And all this energy got focused into a single point, the individual in there with the strongest desire to help and save everyone.
What happens in the video is Louisoix's transformation. He, in that occasion, became a primal (the raid cutscenes dive deeper in this, he became Phoenix, the primal related to the peoples of Eorzea). His powers amplified in several orders of magnitude because of the unmeasurable quantities of aether at his disposal, and that was what made it possible for him to defeat Bahamut.

If it hasn't been already, it should be noted that all of this occurred in real time in game.
The original Final Fantasy XIV released to a very problematic launch. While it has gained an appreciation and following for some of its elements, overall the experience was considered poor even by SE standards. As a result, control of the project was handed over to Naoki Yoshida who was given the task of "saving the game".
What resulted was an in game event spanning several weeks that saw a red light in the skies growing larger. That light was the imprisoned Bahamut, and one day the light erupted and the servers shutdown.
Months later, this trailer launched to reveal what happened. Several months after, it was given an addendum revealing as mentioned the PCs were warped five years into the future to an Eorzea rebuilding from the Calamity.
The end result was A Realm Reborn, the relaunch of FFXIV that became what we know today. When Stormblood was released, A Realm Reborn was removed from the Final Fantasy XIV title and was since just considered the first expansion- erasing 1.0 (the original FFXIV) from the rotation and just making it part of the canon story.
So now it is just Final Fantasy XIV Online and its four (soon to be five) expansions: A Realm Reborn (2.0), Heavensward (3.0), Stormblood (4.0), and Shadowbringers (5.0) with a forthcoming expansion (6.0) expected to be announced next month for release later this year.
In other words, hope you're ready for another reaction. 😁

The new expansion (6.0) has been announced and it is called Endwalker and it's going to be the culmination and conclusion of the overarching storyline that started in 2.0 (A Realm Reborn) and has been the primary story arc of all the expacs since then. Stuff is about to get real and it's got a lot of players very hyped because the 5.x series of patches has been, without doubt, the best storytelling in an MMO bar none.
It's also very interesting to notice how much *older* the Warrior of Light from the trailers (the Warrior dude with the big axe) has gotten over the years because damn, he shows his age.

  • @hermeticallysealed1

This video is actually two separate ones. the first half ends when the screen goes white. That part is the ending to 1.0, and when the servers went down it was played. When players start 2.0 it's actually 5 years later, and no one knows what happened in the rest of the fight. They just knew that the continent was pretty much leveled. The second half is a reward cutscene from one of the 2.0 raids, showing what actually stopped Bahamut (the dragon).
There's a lot that happened in 1.0 that led up to the fight, but short(est) story is, the Garlean Empire realized the second moon was actually an ancient artifact. One of the generals decided to use it as a weapon, and brought it closer to the world, but gets defeated by the player. However, moon is still coming in, so the "good guys" try to stop. Ends up the artifact was actually a prison for a Primal (kind of a god), who breaks out and is pissed at being locked up for several thousand years. Out of game, this was how the developers were justifying changing the zones for 2.0.

A good synopsis, although Bahamut's reasoning wasn't because he was merely held captive, there were some other factors that came into play, but that might be too difficult to grasp for someone who hasn't played the game.

It doesn't matter if you don't understand much of what's going on. That's the thing about going in blind, just like you do with any other game! One of my favorite things with you is that you usually speculate a lot with what you're given, even if you've got no context. Would've loved a 2nd watch of this video like you often do with your other cinematic reactions, because that's when you really start digging and talking about details as well as theorizing. That's one of the things that really makes you unique and stand out from most other reaction/review channels. Feels like that was a bit missing here, in my humble opinion.
Apart from all that, great first take! Like you said the music fits so well in this video. It always gives me goosebumps right when the dragon hatches and spreads its wings along with the drum-roll!

still as epic as I remember it.
So yeah, the idea is that, the Flames of Truth (originally known as "The End of the Era" Trailer) is the end of the Original Final Fantasy 14 . The game was a Financial Bomb they decided, as by the trailer, to literally burn it down, and remade it from the ground up. The new version of the game had the added title "A Realm Reborn" to signify a new start..
Like I said about in your Original 14 trailer reaction I would say watch "A New Beginning" or atleast the edited version by Maximillion Dood that takes out The End of Era trailer, as it is the official A Realm Reborn trailer but not something too manditory. Can't wait for Heavensward.

@@TheReelSym also, as a quick rundown:
dragon is a god fed power by his dragon followers, who are crying for his help
big red moon that breaks is essentially the imperial guys in the airship's attempt at harnessing this power as a battery
the protagonists we're cheering for are the assorted guys who are just trying to defend their nations from the imperial military people (garleans), with the 5 we see a close-up of fighting being the representatives of player characters at this point
the wizard is the most powerful wizard we've seen in-game, who ONLY gains this much power because of how primal (the equivalent of a god) summoning works, which involves everyone's hopes and prayers turning him into this god and burning up his body in the process as he's turned into the Phoenix, which narrowly averts the end of the world
you don't see anything after the white flash until you've beaten what was once considered the harder content back in the day, following a questline that makes sense of all this, but i hope this helps break down who's doing what and why

  • @RealmRabbit
    @RealmRabbit 3 роки тому +1

Really like those fantasy stories where you have a wizard and like somehow this wizard has become basically far more powerful beyond all the other wizards at least currently in existence and there always comes a time when this sort of character meets one of two fates: Either they sacrifice themselves to save others if not the entire world OR alternatively they go absolutely insane with their magic... Whether it's LoTR with Gandalf or WoW with the guardians like Aegwynn and Medivh, it's just always a very interesting character... Malygos could be another example from WoW... And like, they have to die eventually or else they just become a Superman mary sue type, but the stories around their deaths are always really cool... I think in Mercedes Lackey's fiction Vanyel also kind of becomes that extremely powerful wizard character too though I haven't read it too much (but Mercedes Lackey has a lot of filk music (folk music about fiction) and I've listened to a lot of that...
I also felt this way about this one character from the anime "Claymore" named Teresa even though she's definitely not a wizard, but she's basically the most powerful swordswoman such that absolutely no one can really compete with her while she puts very little effort into fighting them...
And yeah, these characters are amazing, but a big part of what makes them amazing I think is how their power ends up not mattering because something just comes along and makes them have to decide to sacrifice themselves or something just kills them out of nowhere which is shocking or they just go crazy with power until some new heroes (insert video game players here often) come along to resolve their insanity often by killing them... At which point ideally the author will maybe just have that characters' spirit transcend death and play a role kinda like I think was the case of Medivh, but nonetheless it's important that they reach a point where they're no longer able to solve the problems they once did (and this can open the fiction up more for weaker antagonists who are still an issue)... Again, don't want a Superman situation where it's like they never really die or maybe they do but it doesn't mean much because they'll be back alive later the same person not phased at all... Like at this point if Superman dies, are you really going to believe it? Probably not... Probably he will be back 100% corporeal with all his powers the next time they want to write him into a story...
