- More than 5 years after making an image titled, 'The Dysfunctional Family', I can now fully appreciate its significance. I recently intended to share the image on social media as a distraction from other work, but as soon as I started to type, words spilled out effortlessly. I'd inadvertently written the content for a video, so here it is. I often look back to see a way forward or to simply reminisce and rediscover my woodland photography. I hope this video inspires you to do the same or at least offers some insights and inspiration for your own photography.

Hey Simon, preserving nature is super important. My wife, and I have been watching your videos for a few years now, and always enjoyed your vision of the woodlands. We donated to Meg's Grove some time ago, and I've just ordered your new book. It's literally the only landscape photography book that my wife has suggested I get. Anyway, always sad when trees disappear, especially those that we come to know. Please keep making videos and doing what you do. We don't need more videos from people travelling all over the world to duplicate each other. We do need to learn to appreciate what we already have. Cheers.

I did not realize that there was a snowy dysfunctional family , that's beautiful. Winter shots are always peaceful and everything is resting waiting for spring to regenerate, at least that is my attitude. Thanks Simon for a great and informative video.

I always struggled with woodland photography in winter, specially where I live we got no fog no snow just cold dead woods, you can find compositions of course but it's just not easy nor was I ever satisfied with any of the pics really. A couple of days ago, by some miracle we got a snow storm and I knew that was my time to get what I always wanted from the woods. I was alone there with my camera like a lunatic (that's what the workers probably thought at least haha) finding compos left and right. Needless to say, I got the best series of images Ive ever taken in one day, as a matter of fact, I was so proud of the photos that I decided to print and frame some haha...this was a pretty lengthy comment, just wanted to share my experience🙏🏻
That has happened to me also. Luckily I made some exposures before the tree was cut down. The company that bought the apt. complex dug up the whole courtyard and put up a paring lot. I do have dozens of photos though.
Your video has landed at a perfect time, I lost my fojo of late and haven’t been out in the woods with my camera for several months. Your video has given me that urge to get back out into my local woods and simply meander amongst the trees. Thanks Simon ☺️

I absolutely love your woodland photography, such gorgeous images. I personally keep going for dare I say it the easier composition with pathways etc. Maybe I need to look more closely and take my time to find a story within the scene. Easier said than done. Lol

A welcome reflection ..... it's been a particularly unproductive and glum winter so a look at what is possible from reviewing past images is really helpful in future motivation and enthusiasm. It would have been nice to have some good foggy, frosty or snowy days when I could have got out in the woods but it was not to be. Hope Scotland goes well. Say hello to the Caledonian Pines for me. I miss them !

Great video with great content. I covered this topic in 2020 on my blog, the images we take echo landscapes that over time cannot escape the constant changes. Our images keep their memory alive. I always agree with what you say, and I respect you very much. Greetings from Italy.

Great words Simon....can I ask...where in woodland photography should I focus......
My local woods are small but interesting elements I am trying to capture. Finding, composing, setting and taking the shot I find I forget about my bad lungs altogether. Totally in tune with your views and collections addition book inspires me! (hobgoblin print blows me away every look and is what I dream of capturing on pixels one day!)

Try chocolate to overcome writer's block. I'm convinced that all the different permutations of chocolate comprise the fourth major food group. You never outgrow your need for chocolate!
Many times over the years whether it was buildings or nature. I've thought, I'll get back to that. Next thing I know it's gone..

Getting ready for the arrival of spring. My old " film" days, would be buying kodak 64, fuji 100, agfa 100. Each film for different subjects. Today , no bustling buying film, new batteries. Just check equipement. Look at maps. Find possible sites to visit. Scout those sitex....Watch for the red glow on trees in the distance, a sign that spring is about to burst. I really love when the leaves are small, not fully developed. They expand like butterfly wings that just exited the cacoon.
Hi Simon.. I think I've been a follower of your channel from very early on, but I'm not a woodland or even a landscape photographer, street is my bag, but this vid applies to my genre as well - at least imo - all the headings in your video rang bells with me and what I try to achieve with my photography especially for the long term, and I'm gonna try and include some words - which I wasn't before - in an upcoming publication I'm putting together.. perhaps I could send you a copy?
