猫咪 oh my god me too. I met this anime at November and I was in trouble. I couldn’t cry for days and I’m super emotive. So at the first ep of this anime I cried seeing Kiriyama sad everytime.
This OP truly shows to the audience just how far Rei has sunk and how hard he's fighting his depression without making any progress, the people working on this anime just really 'get' depression. Especially when compared to the third OP it's beautifully haunting.
I really like how this show tackles depression, often times in anime the depressed character is never happy, never talks and its portrayed as if talking to ppl will just cure your depression while in this rei is still able to be happy and despite being with the ppl he cares about and truly loves his depression doesnt go away just like that. this anime takes on a different side of depression which I love a lot and well can slightly relate to more?
The author herself fights against her own depression. She really knows how to portray it in a relatable way that conveys to the general audience what is to deal with depression.
The Visual presentation of emotions on this show is honestly one of the most impressive works i’ve ever seen. Studio shaft has my standing ovation such a underwatched masterpiece.
I've fallen in love with this anime. It is much more than just shogi and Season 2 is even better. Likeable protagonists, good character development, beautiful art, the colours always fit the mood, perfect music and full of emotions. Dramatic but calm at the same time. It's quite underrated and I wish season 3 would exist.
I honestly felt like season 1 was better than 2. I didn't like the arc about the middle sister and there were moments that felt to me emotionally manipulative and too over-the-top sad in an unrealistic way, like they try to force from the viewer a reaction. And i say it as someone who was bullied when i was young.
@@jash3881 I see what you mean and think you're right in a way. Anyway I was also bullied for years, but for me it was actually the best arc and I could relate very well to it. I'm an extremely dramatic and emotional person and saw a lot of similarities between my real life and scenes in the anime, so I guess that's why I see no unrealistic or over-the-top emotions here 😅
I recommend this anime as something you watch right before bedtime. It's not particularly exciting or action packed. It's the entertainment equivalent of someone leaving a trail of candy on the ground. You go at a slow, steady pace, picking up the pieces and tasting little flavors on the journey. There's just enough curiosity to find out where the trail leads, but you're not being rushed. You're just soaking in the various characters, watching the relationships being formed, and it leaves you feeling strangely comfortable.
I can see exactly why you would say this. But personally, I was SOOO invested in every single scene in this series and was uncharacteristically excited to get into every subsequent episode.
And eventually all you're left with are the wrappers. And you realize how much you enjoyed each candy looking back, and you're able to savor the memory of the candies in a bittersweet way.

I don't think I've ever been able to relste to a character more than Rei. Watching a show about someone going through the exact same mental problems i am going through now, and watching how he overcomes it. He showed me a way out, and that little thing alone motivates me to even get out of bed in the afternoon. He showed me that all hope is not lost.
It's a shame that this show didn't get the popularity it deserves. It's like rakugou shinju before it became popular- great drama and yet nobody seems to be talking about it.
Bump of chicken is amazing, they made their band when they were 14 or so, they thought “bump” meant counter attack and chicken meant “weaklings” so they thought they were calling themselves counter attack of the weak Anyways, you should check out the opening for blood blockade battlefront and pokemon gotcha since they worked on both of those
Amazing series and opening, wish more people knew about this series, its so sad that a lot of ppls drop this series when they hear its shogi, but this show is more then just shogi. EDIT: oh dang, this was 2 years ago and almost 1k thumbs up, that's crazy. EDIT:oh dang, 1k like
GrimDaddy Shogi is Japan's equivalent of chess with a few differences. There are a few pieces that don't have a chess equivalent and the starting positions are different.
This show has the best depiction of bullying in all of media. It really hits home for anyone who has been shunned or bullied or manipulated. We need more! Come on Shaft!
I love how in this first Opening we cannot see Rei's eyes through the glasses, and it's only at the beginning of the second one that they are observed. It's a good way to show Rei's closed heart (and its subsequent evolution).
I love this show in more ways than I can express. The water symbolism and use of shogi to convey everyday life for Rei is amazing. The deep characterization of people you would have otherwise never cared about in the slightest, and our protagonist’s journey to reach some minute element of happiness, even if he doesn’t believe he deserves it. This show has taught me a lot and I’ve never seen a character more “real” than Rei Kiriyama. Seriously, what this show is able to do with such a simple premise and plot is mind blowing.
I love how at 1:01, the melody picks up, becoming a bit more happier, subverting the same call and response line we just heard previously. It really does establish that despite Kiriyama’s depression and hardships, things are getting better because of the people around him. Also, the visuals showcase lights everywhere adding onto that theme. People are shown for the first time and the hand that extends to Kiriyama is seen which is further established in season 2. This anime is fantastic and needs more people to see it.
After I saw like 220 or something Anime this has become my favorite instantly. I really didn't think an Anime other than evangelion could impact me emotionally this much but March comes like a lion perfectly filled the emptiness evangelion left me. This Anime truly is a masterpiece of our times and an instant classic that will be remembered for the rest of times
I hate the visuals in this op...i mean if it isnt just about shogi and more about depression..then at 0:43 they should have played a montage of his depressing life and then at 1:13 then should have done a montage of the characters in the show and how they bring a bit of life into his own....thats the vibe i get from this song....but hey thats just me
I have to say that I feel just as Rei, and this anime helped me understand the complexity of human emotions with all the beautiful anologies and ost that it has. This anime is perfection and makes me feel in peace with myself, crying out of a mist of sadness and hapiness
Here it is, my favorite anime, took me a long time (4 years) to decide on one but I've never been so certain that this really is, for me, the Best Anime. a text won't suffice if I had the time I would make a Good video on it, but what struck me when I was early into the series is how it makes you relate so much to it without feeling dumb, still feeling it has a lot more going on for it than when you first lay your eyes on it, a lot more layers. really good anime.a lot of likeable characters, even his shogi opponents that you'd expect to be traditionally antagonistic are a bunch of amusing eccentrics
I remember watching the first episode, it was like nothing to me. Like he didn’t even talk until like 6 minutes in. I didn’t even know what shoji was. Refused to watch this anime for years because I only really enjoy action, mystery, psychological, horror, crime and adventure type of anime but i've always suffered really bad depression and one day I was just sitting at home feeling so bad and lonely I decided to watch this then realized I am the main character in this anime I related to it a lot and while it's not the type of anime i'd ever enjoy or like, somehow I found myself liking the anime only because I related to it and could understand the depression. With that said I only ever watched this anime on my most depressed nights I think I wouldn't enjoy the anime any other day if I wasn't in that specific mindset while watching it
The amount of trauma Rei was forced to deal with. First losing his family and being brought to another where you are immediately hated for being praised
One day I was scrolling through Netflix for a new show after I finished Ouran High School Host Club and I came across this and it is one of, if not the best, anime’s I’ve ever watched. It deserves way more attention than it gets.
To who is thinking about watching...just watch , it is a amazing anime , with a lot of life lessons(dunno if is like this that spells) it is really emotional and makes me cry a lot
I love the contrast with this particular op compared to the third one. With this one, he's drowning in water, struggling to get out of it and his depression, being so devoid of color. The third one those, coloring is stunningly beautiful as he climbs over obstacles, walks on top of the water, chasing something rather than being helped up to his feet. The second and fourth op's are alright and do share a similar theme with the other two, but I feel the first and third op are just really good

That’s when my entire world was stained in color, in a single instant.

The fact my heart is beating… the fact my breaths continue flowing in and out…
the fact my heart remains ever so warm… There’s a definite reason for them all:

I really loved season 1
My OP/ED rankings for Sangatsu no Lion:
OP1 = ED3 > ED1 = OP2 > OP4 > ED4 = ED2 > OP3
Ravus 9 I see you appreciate a good bump of chicken song as well
Ravus 9 if your list was in reverse thats mine
Except sayonara bystander is higher up
Fodase?
Op3 > Op2 > Op1 > Op4
Amazing anime, and I would totally rewatch it and recommend it to everyone I know
Thanks
