    Excellently presented review. Clear and precise for info presented. No stumbling about like on so many UA-cam reviews that I can't finish.
    As a Media Major back in college (long ago) w/video concentration, I found your presentation top notch.
    While the iD44 is a little over-the-top for my home recording needs, I'm off to look up your review on the iD22.

    Excellent review and with the candor I need to really hold my interest. I am audio guy from too far back in time. I am wanting to do voice over and maybe my own Podcast. Music play is probably not in the cards per se. However, I have been in the hunt for a USB interface with high quality ADC and DAC converters vs. my computer or more merely so so converters. I am always looking for the giant killer in value to performance ratio. Note I am not saying cheap, but value for your hard earned money. I think Audient is one of the better values out there in this crazy big world of USB interfaces. Seems like everyone has one, but is it really that special. I like that Audient's line is fairly small. Also that ID44 is expandable. Time will if this one is it, but it is looking good for this one, or one of the other Audient candidates. Thanks for you quality review.

I am also hoping that Audient will make a rack mount 8 channel interface with Thunderbolt 3 or maybe go the RME or Antelope route with 12 channels. I would purchase that in a heartbeat. Hopefully that will be their next step. Thank you again for all you do. Stay safe and may God bless.... Jon

    Hi there! brilliant review you have’ done! I’m looking for a 4 channel interface to connect to my iPad pro 2nd generation using Auria DAW. I saw that you’ve connected the id22 to your iPad for the video where you talk about drum mics... I would like to know wether I can use the I’d 44 to connect to my iPad using apple camera kit. I’ve contacted Audient and they said they haven’t tested it, but it might work if I use a Mac or pc to run the control app and use it to save the routing options SO AFTER I CAN connect to my iPad...as far as I understood the issue is because the control app doesn’t work in iOS... can you please let me know if I can make the ID 44 work with my iPad??? Kindest regards, many many thanks in advance🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

    Hi Adam. Great channel. Would you consider the mic pres in the ID44 on par with high quality professional pre amps. In other words, would you still need to use an external mic pre for recording guitars or would this do it perfectly?

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  3 роки тому +6

      This works perfectly for me. Anything more “expensive” than these pres generally has a character of some kind, whether that’s your thing or not. For clean inputs these are far better than their price point suggest

    Hi,
    Thanks a lot for your video.
    I recently bought the new Focusrite 18i20 3rd generation and eventhough not bad but there are some things I don't like about this unit. First it doesn't clock automatically to the sample rate of my Logic Pro project which I always have to set manually inside the audio midi setup.`
    -I find it has too much latency when working with 44.1 kHz, I have used a Mackie and a very cheap Behringer before and strange but with these interfaces my 12 threads Mac Pro used less cpu power. With the same settings and my older cheap interfaces would follow Logic pro's sample rate automatically.
    I called Focusrite but they say it does not do it, you'll have to set it manually inside the audio midi setup.
    I even can't mute my subwoofer inside Focusrite, it then mutes both my near fields and my sub.
    ////I wanted to buy the Audient but a friend of mine advised me to buy the Focusrite, I wish I had bought the Audient.
    -From what I read in the manual when set to internal clock it will update the sample rate accordingly to Logic's sample rate. Am I right?
    -Can you beside switching to another pair of speakers as well listen to both of them or mute one of them whenever you want say when using a subwoofer?
    Thanks in advance for your time.Hope to hear from you.
    Think I'm going to send the Focusrite back and buy this excellent piece of hardware.
    Regards,
    Haluk.

    Hello Adam and thanks very much for this informative and well-thought-out review! Just took the plunge on the iD44 as my first-ever audio interface. Looking forward to giving it a whirl and delving deeper into recording. Previously I've used interfaces by Focusrite but this Audient looks and sounds a cut above the rest. I was also delighted to hear you are a Windows and Reaper user as well, since that is the precise configuration I'll be using myself. I'll definitely be having a look round your channel for more useful info, but since our systems are already so similar on those 3 counts, could you also recommend some affordable mics for recording acoustic stringed instruments like guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, etc.? In other studios I have used KM84s and C414s, although my current budget will not allow for those. In the small diaphragm category I have been eyeing the Oktava MK-012s, sE Electronics sE8s, Lauten Audio LA120s, Rode NT5s, and even the newer Lewitt LCT140 Airs. Are there others I should be considering, and what affordable large diaphragm (if any) would you recommend for acoustic guitar? I know 'affordable' is subjective but I would say >$500. For example I once was recorded on guitar using a mid-side array and I am curious what pattern I would need for the 'side' portion - must it be a figure 8? Thanks in advance and all the best, Seán

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  3 роки тому

      Good to know you’re getting there!
      You definitely need something to be Fig 8 for a mid side pattern to work, that’s the core of that method so I’d leave that until you can get either a good multipattern mic or a ribbon.
      In the meantime, I highly suggest getting a pair of Aston Origins. They sound far above their price bracket and will get you a long way, some big names are using them. I’d be suggesting the new Aston Element but it’s not out for a few months yet, keep an eye out though. Good luck!

      Wow, I just read in a comment below that you are actually running Reaper on Linux. I was using Linux Mint for awhile there and then had some issues with an HDD unable to mount, so I switched back to Windows (!) temporarily and will be migrating back to Linux shortly. Is there a particular distro you find particularly suits audio production, and are there any tips for optimising a Linux environment for working with Reaper? Perhaps you've already covered this in other videos and I'll definitely be looking for those, so apologies for the profuse questions! Best, Seán

    So I'm really wanting to work with a hybrid setup eventually. If I were to get this and an ASP800, am I only able to use two pieces of outboard gear, since the iD44 only has those inserts on two channels? Love the videos by the way!

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Beau. Depends on your routing method, if you really want outboard then splash out on an ASP880- those have an insert point on every channel after the preamp. A lot of modern setups just don’t use any outboard so I think the 800 is designed around that principle

    There is a competition: Arturia Audiofuse. Mic pres have 75dB gain or so the spec says. Discrete mic pres and good converters too just like the Audient. iD44 has 60dB gain but it looks like it's enough to use with a SM7B without a stupid Cloudlifter.

    How does Id 44 compares to the Focusrite clarett 4Pre usb.??? I never had the chance to personally test it and hear it, but I’ve been told that the pre-amps on the I’d 44 are sonically more on the brighter side, almost hiFi-like sounding, very defined; whereas the clarett is darker vintage like sounding pre-amps with less definition, muddier... anyone had experience with both interfaces and have some sort of comment about this?.any comment in the sense of clarifying this would be much appreciated! Insane work, much appreciated - you narrowed my search from 20 interfaces down to just these two. I watched both videos for audient 22 and 44 and I still don't know which one to get. I get an impression the mic signal is louder and clearer for id44 but I don't know if it's a better interface or if you were just recording a bit louder this time. I checked the specs and they seem to contradict in favour of id22... Could you clarify?

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  5 років тому

      I think you’re right that the iD44 has a very slightly hotter input, but it’s a matter of a couple of dB if it is. I don’t think it’s an issue either way, they’re both great interfaces- the 44 has more features and more channels if you need them, the 22 has less but the price reflects it. Just pick the one that suits your needs the best

      @@adamsteelproducer "Unfortunately" I do vocals, guitar, violin, bass and serious multitrack VST orchestration, so the "minimum I need" is everything I can get - preamps, converters, low latency and stable driver. Audient seem to be the only series of sub-RME class which has all of those handled, everything else I found is either too expensive or has that one single inferior element which would backfire in the long run... We're moving up from Scarlett 18i20 1st Gen so I guess even an iD4 would be an improvement (tell me if I'm wrong), but I want to be sure nothing is missing so I'll probably get iD22. Thank you a lot for the insight :)

      @djfull4442 5 років тому

      Oh yep. I got HDSPe recommended as well and I considered it a lot. But that's maybe a plan for the future. First we need a session recorder headroom to repair that 1st Gen mistake... The point is we DELIBERATELY bought a flagship Scarlett to avoid issues, we expected the most support for that... guess what happened - all 1st Gen Scarletts now work with 2nd Gen drivers but 18i20 didn't get any :FACEPALM: Gotta be us to have such luck, usually it is like this with anything we buy, ESPECIALLY tech equipment, so we really need to be wiser this time...

Coaxial S/PDIF of Clarett is a less struggle since my Kemper is using coaxial cables and for Audient I would need converter from optical to coaxial and thats another 50 euros.
    What would you recommend me?

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  5 років тому +1

      The Audient preamps in my opinion are more clean/neutral, where the Clarett has more character and forced brightness. Don’t worry about the spdif, just run the kemper into the 44’s analog inputs- it sounds great that way and is easy to route. You can also have clocking issues trying to run off external digital units, remove the headache by removing the digital connection

    People really praise Audient for their superb preamp and converter quality. But since i will be using a lot of guitar VST plugins, i really need a good DI and very low latency of course. I've heard some people saying Audient are not the best when it comes to latency and drivers, so this got me worried. Otherwise this particular interface got everything i need and i am strongly considering buying it. I will be switching from Focusrite Saffire Pro, that served me quite well over the years.

    • @adamsteelproducer
      @adamsteelproducer  5 років тому

      Hey! There are a few ways of doing this- does the Ensemble have ADAT output? You could run those pres directly out of the ADAT into the iD44 and have a full setup there, or if you’re on a Mac you could set up an Aggregate device combining the two. Personally I don’t recommend aggregate devices since there can be lots of potential bugs and flaws because it’s an untested solution, but it could work for yoy

      Yeah you should be able to do that- if the Ensemble has a mix routing software, try sending the preamps straight out of the optical channels. I did this for a while using a Focusrite LS56 as my extra Preamp channels. Good luck!

    It’s an amazing interface. Much better quality than the audient iD14. However, the only things I don’t like are the audio dropouts and the weak gain. There’s a workaround in Logic to print compression and gain into vocals which does the trick though. That saves you from buying a pre amp. Most of them are super expensive.

      Audient is great if the feature set works for you. Sound is brilliant, likely a little warmer/bigger than RME's sound. That said, RME is stellar in terms of drivers, TotalMix (if you like that), includes the best clocking in the industry, has no Windows Sound issues (just works transparently as with macs; not so with Audient, Apollo, etc.), and has LOOPBACK! So, worth the extra money if you have it. EXCEPT: you're limited with Babyface models to only 2 preamps. That's why I'm back to Audient. (And do miss RME for the reasons mentioned.)

      The iD44 has a DAC inside of it, (digital to audio converter) but it does a lot more as well. It converts microphone and line level signals to digital using the ADC chips, and is a full audio recording interface.
      We use the term “audio interface” to encompass everything that a recording device does - in the hifi world they use the phrase “DAC” because that is most often all they need their equipment to do as a separate unit.
