Being an “09’er” hearing all this legacy info about MVC2 and how difficult and in-depth it was, it makes you look at MVC3 in a different light, with comeback mechanics etc and how much easier it was to Marvel 2. It would be cool if you guys did a walkthrough/guide/breakdown or a podcast on how all the technology was figured out in MVC2 and who found it/how they found it. Basically a tutorial or introduction on what made MVC2 so GodLike and last for 10 years, whereas MVC3 died off and got replaced a lot quicker than that.
Fan wise Umvc3 was the shit and had the most views for a fighting game outside of maybe smash bros. It only got replaced for the simple fact that tournaments replaced it due to esports wanting the latest title. Which after a couple years MVCI was so wack a lot of tournaments dont even run as a top game. You may need to ask a better question because in the eyes of fans umvc3 was better than mvc2. Mvc2 was godlike to players who understood the small nuance in the game. It lasting for 10 years and umvc3 lasting for about 6 is completely different reasons. As far as support by fans UMVC3 was more godlike than Mvc2 technically.
MILK I don’t dispute that, I actually agree. As I don’t really know or understand MVC2 I found MVC3 and UMVC3 hype to watch. I never understood how MVC2 could last for so long when only 6 characters were viable for tournament or just in general if you ever wanted to win. Also graphics for me make a game more interesting to watch, I prefer looking at UMVC3 and SF4 than MVC2 and SF3: Third Strike. It just would be nice for them to break it down so I can learn the history I guess is what I am asking.
@@billynahar9861 Now that is a good question. I would like that answered also.
@@KrayKenshin I've played both marvel 2 and 3 competitively and have been in the scene since 2001 so i can share some knowledge. Marvel 2 lasted long because fighting games were dying and no one expected sf4 or marvel 3 to ever come out. They were forced to play it and it was the same situation as marvel 3 where it had a lot of people playing in the first 3 years but it started dropping off years after. The amount of people that played marvel 2 competitively was very small compared to marvel 3. The reason why marvel 2 is a classic is because it had so many characters and its the first game where we kept finding cool new glitches, combos and infinites. Mike Z (creator of skullgirls) was one of the pioneers of finding all these glitches and it drew in a lot of interest as well in the beginning. There were no streams and the common household had 56k internet connection so sharing tech was limited. You had to be there at major tournaments to see new tech or had to wait for some type of footage to come out. It was always hype seeing these things and there's a bunch of storylines and new players popping out of nowhere and new tech coming from all regions and even internationally (Japan). There were a lot of reasons why it was so memorable and considered a classic but it would take too long to type this all out. But all i can say is that it was just perfect for that "era". To be honest, if marvel 2 came out the way it did right now it 2019, it wouldn't last long. People would have complained that 98% of the cast is completely useless. There's no way to win at a high level if you're not using Magneto, Storm, Cable, Sentinel as the main characters with psylocke assist (there's a few other characters and assists but i cant think of them right now but you get my point). The reason why people keep talking about how good it is, is because most of us are just old dudes that hold onto these memories and loved the game and we keep telling people that its good. The top players in marvel 2 will always say its the best game ever made and the general public/casual audience will obviously listen to this and believe it since its coming from the top players. This causes a domino effect where even people who's never touched the game will say its good too just because top players said it. In my eyes, umvc3 was a funner game that had more viable characters. The only reason why the top marvel 2 players dont like umvc3 as much is due to X-factor since it makes the game "more random" and its easier to have comebacks. They are also hating on it just because it doesnt play exactly like marvel 2 lol
@@ChojinLove Yea fighting games were in a rough spot in the 2000s. I played them in the 90s but missed that entire decade due to there really not being any new popular games coming out. I got like the first dead or alive on Xbox and got one of the 3D Mortal Kombat games that came out but it was before online so I barely played them. Shooters were the big thing competitively at that point. I played counter-strike on PC but most console players were playing Halo. Then E-Sports erupted into a whole new dimension when StarCraft 2 launched. Record breaking viewership, insane 6 figure prize pools, it even took over at MLG, which was a niche console tournament before that, and was bringing in mainstream media coverage. League of Legends followed and eventually sold out Madison Square Garden. Now e-sports is so huge that fighting games have had a rebirth because they work so well competitively.
They have always felt like the perfect game to compete with someone to see who is the best in my eyes even in the 90s when I was playing the original 3 Mortal Kombats and Street Fighter 2 on SNES. Still even to this day they aren't as popular as other genres. Most fighting games have such small communities, especially on PC. I wish more people played them because it does feel like just a pure competitive experience. There is something so satisfying about getting good and outplaying someone in fighting games that I don't get from other genres.
"the socks that look like he stomped camp fires with them" LMAO
happy birthday yipes!
Am I the only one waiting for this week's episode?!?!?! I need my weekly no frillz crack!!!

Matrix was wrong Vegeta’s first kill on Namek was named Cui. Pui Pui was the guy Vegeta killed on Babidi’s ship.
I love starting the work week watching this podcast, thanks for Monday uploads!!!
I'm loving the trip down memory lane. You're all documenting moments in the FGC that could be lost to time.

Straight addicted to no frillz, need my fix each week
+1 X3
one of my favorite episodes from the podcast, playing to win but playing what you love first and foremost, execution testing at a high standard level to ones self, innovation and finding enjoyment and changing peoples perspective of the character you are playing. Truly inspiring, shoutouts to J360 one of my new favorite fighting game players
Grew up in the 90s and while I love hearing OG FGC stories, I love that you also talk about old school TV shows and how sick they were.
Shoutouts from the Philippines.
Happy Birthday Yipes! So glad your commentary brought me into the FGC!!!

Lol Thanks for the video Matrix. I was mad lost about the whole tranformers thing.
I came into the MvC2 scene really late (around 2010). I met Josh, Amir, Arthur, Nelson, and a few others at Syn's place. Game has so much history and I still haven't experienced anything else like it.
YOOOO The Transformer lore! Man I loved that shit! (My favorite was comic book Shockwave. Man was OD)
This is my fav ep. Not only did 360 drop BARS on some of his gaming philosophies, the questions and stories were legit.

happy born Yipes!! and get MarlinPie on this bro!
Notification gang, great way to start the morning
Being 18 and from the south bruh
I just imagine walking into an arcade in the 90s and just having hella competition and just fun times
Sounded like the time I should have been born lmao
Yeah man that time was god like im 17 and i wish i grew up in arcades also
Arcades used to be everywhere. It ended when Dreamcast died. Soulcalibur was out. PlayStation 2 and Xbox killed Arcades.
I'm also from the south but closer to their age and I remember going to the arcades every now and then but I still feel like I missed out listening to them. I would play around on the fighting games every now and then but I was never going to dedicate the time to get good at them. I remember seeing MvC but don't even remember if I played it or not. I always stuck with the more casual stuff at the arcades like shooting and racing games. Got into PC games(Counter-Strike, Star Craft, WoW) at a very young age and was never involved in the FGC. Now DBFZ got me back into this genre for the first time in damn near 15 years and seeing what a special community the FGC is makes me wish I would have payed more attention to it.
Then again the arcades here weren't as popping as they describe it anyway. There weren't lines as long as they describe at the top fighting games with that much competition. It seems like their experience was unique to New York City.
@@novacounciloutsdrs4770 I'm pretty sure New Orleans (I'm right on the outskirts of NO) had a scene
I don't know anyone around that played during that time and it sucks
From the south born around that time....people would travel to each others houses to play each other on console...before the internet connected us in fighting games...in the age of third strike........MVC was truth....the arcades were a brother hood...its crazy...if you got beat in the arcades lmaoo your immediate was see me on console lmao. It was different and its what you imagine it arcade musty etc.
Right on time boyz
Wholy shit this was hilarious as fark. It took me a few days to finish this podcast but damn ive never laughed so much in a long time by watching and listening to these stories. Thank you Yipes and Matrix
Best one yet!
Yo Mr. Matrix LMFAO I didn't expect that AoA conversation at the end HOWEVER.....I will never forget back when I was in the military and this exact conversation came up.
Late LATE night in the barracks all the homes sittin around in our bunks and for whatever reason this came up when one dude was talking about his girl back home. I PROMISE you I was maybe 1 of 2 guys who said no they didn't. It was hilarious and they gave you a million reasons on why you should do it.
I still haven't, but....who knows, right? I am getting married soon haha.
Matrix saves the legacy
