Hey Justin. I can't believe it took me a year to notice your reaction to Horsin' Around - my favorite Prefab Sprout song and (only behind Budapest By Blimp) my second favorite song involving Thomas Dolby. Your sound system is excellent. When the trumpets kick in my eyes teared up. The beauty of the music overwhelmed me. My feet were stomping and body moving. This song is an incredible, happy piece of music. The themes are sad, but the emotion of realizing that you just screwed up the best relationship you ever had comes through lyrically and within the beat. There is an honesty that you don't find every day. Can anyone count the number of time signatures? They changed within the same stanza sometimes. Genius. Anyways, sorry it took me so long to notice. Thanks for hitting Horsin' Around. Your friend, Ken
Prefab Sprout and the genius songwriting of Paddy Mcaloon represented the absolute cream of 80's indy pop - this still sounds fantastic....the album it was from was a classic, but to my mind the one that preceded it - Swoon - their debut, was even better ...'Cruel' for me, is still the greatest song of that decade
Justin it’s so fun to listen to the Sprouts with you, I cannot wait til you get to their next official album Langley Park to Memphis. It’s way more poppy and glossy, but every song is amazing and fun
Prefab Sprout is a band I've known the name of forever, but never actually got around to listening to. My first impression is "What if Burt Bacharach did Stranglers covers?" Not my usual thing, but glad I got a chance to check them out.
"Well Wilbur". We will have to rein in that fear. Maybe if you saddle up with some mellow little sprout, that apprehension will trail away happily with cheer! "A horse is a horse, of course, of course". No need to fear such a gentle sort, they only want love and a home inside your fort. Peace and enjoy the ride.
Justin should do the whole debut album by Dead Can Dance as well as the second, Spleen and Ideal. They're the only ones from the DCD discography that I really like because they are on the border between post-punk, neoclassical and world music.
the digitalised pristine vibe to this song’s video belies it’s original gritty murky role as track 2 on track 2-aka “the slow Grower”. You’re a sophisticated Cat JP- classifying identikit genres with apparent ease. Put in context of 85, this blew away the blossoming indie guitar brigade to forge it’s own genre of Sublime Sproutist Poetic Pop with enough Northern Soul to keep it Real. *Do the last 2 tracks together after Desire As*. My reggae dub workmate says they ain’t as good as side one, kinda dubiously My word play ain’t as good as McAloon’s or Morrissey’s. Paddy’s got prettier tunes too. A Soul mining pop fest like no other!
The term "creature", whilst a bit old fashioned, upper/middle class and a perhaps bit patronising, can be a term of affection for a woman in England. As in "my darling you're such a gorgeous little creature."
Perhaps my least favourite track on an otherwise gorgeous album. As you say, a mix of styles which is slightly fey, loungey and over clever. But it's beautifully sung, played and produced. The next track is excellent though.
@@pentagrammaton6793 Sticking with the carbon reference. and to paraphrase your good self... Mining in the 80's produced some grade A coal. However this, these lot, I've always thought of as musical slag.
One of their most inventive and humorous of songs - great melodies, exceptional lyrics. Glad you appreciated it.

Album produced by Thomas Dolby. The best production job ever IMHO

The shoulders are taken 😊. The horns in the second half did it for me
Always going to listen to a Prefab Sprout reaction Justin! I'd forgotten about this track. Thanks for reminding me!
This is a masterpiece! The whole album. You gotta hurry up finishing this one to star a new one asap 😜
Great dark and witty lyrics from Paddy McAloon. His brother, Martin, also deserves a mention for the bass playing on this track.
Brilliant bassist indeed. Less is more with flourishing flashes of “This song needs this here, now”
@@HippoYnYrEira Yes, I am looking forward to the final track, " When The Angels " where he lets loose with quite a funky bassline.
Smooth.
One of the most underrated groups of the 1980s
They're pretty good!
Bosa Nova rock. I had the US pressing of this album "Two Wheels Good". Played is so often that I was picking tunes from the other side of the disk.

This is a great song but the next one is the best. Brilliant album!
Agree 100%. “Desire as” is like drowning in a sea of bitter sweet melancholy
Hello JP. Would love to see you review something by Dead Can Dance. Try the track 'Frontier' from 1984, Music's golden year.

A decent tune. I can't remember how well it fits in context to the album. Maybe I will listen to it after I run my errands.

Let's just say 10. :0)

I actually liked the Bossa Nova half of this song. The swing section… no. Overall ⭐️⭐️
Nope, does nothing for me.
This could've been a prog reaction, are you happy now, Christian? Are you?? 😅
@@Katehowe3010 not really, as it's pretty bad. My point was that, this is what we're getting now...better the devil you know...
@@Katehowe3010 unfortunately yes.
The usual yawnfest...

The 80s hides some real gems; this, by contrast, is a highly polished chipping.

Kind of a snoozer, you know I like my bossa nova but, this is a sterile imitation for me. Still don’t see the appeal. More like effn around…
