- A video I'm very happy to present: The Montana Rail Link Logan Local in the snow with some switching action at Logan, running through the Jefferson Canyon, and more!
The snow in this video was unexpected but very welcome! It all fell the night before creating quite the Winter scene. On top of that being so very lucky to capture some action in the Jefferson Canyon as it only sees a handful of trains each week and the Logan Local only runs through it once a week on its way to and from Whitehall. Capturing this in the canyon was my #1 goal during this trip to the MRL.

I am always stunned on how beautiful your videos are in production, scene, and entertainment. Not only do you show the power and grace of the locomotives and their trains, but the awesome landscapes that they travel. Nicely done !!
Thank you Mike that is exactly what I aim to showcase! 70% of the fun for me is the locations themselves. I feel so fortunate to live out in the West and be within driving distance of so many spectacular places.
Thank you for another beautiful video of the Montana Rail Link, Dan! The Logan local is an interesting to train to see in action. The switching at Logan was fascinating to watch. The drone footage of the trip through Jefferson Canyon was beautiful. The light snow added to the beauty of the scenery.
Thank you Thomas! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Real respect to the Brakeman on the last tank car heading back to Logan (at around 14:00) even on a mild day in a Montana Winter that guy is something!
Wonderful video as always and good to still be seeing MRL as an operation!
I chatted with that guy briefly before beginning to film this and he was a nice guy. Helpful too in letting me know for sure they would be running to Whitehall. Thanks a lot!
Beautiful landscape and video. Love it😊
Thank you!
There's nothing nicer than a snowy landscape. I'm sure the crews really like this route. Jefferson Canyon is breathtakingly beautiful in both directions. Montana is indeed a very peaceful and gorgeous state, where nature rules everything. And we can enjoy these natural formations from the air perfectly. Great video as always Dan, I'm not surprised you like this part of the state.
Thank you Z! Soem of the best MRL action left in my opinion. Helper operations are neat but I enjoy getting the locals that use older power just like this.
Always a thrill when I see a new railfan dan video posted. This one does not disappoint. My wife and I were coming home on the Empire Builder, on May 1st. At one point, somewhere in Eastern Montana, I saw a drone hovering about us. I thought, "maybe it's railfan dan"! Probably not -- but I bet some day I'll run into you, somewhere!
Thanks Michael! Yeah maybe someday!
Thanks!
Loved this video, Dan. The coolest footage was from the drone gently sweeping counter-clockwise as you drove off below in a clockwise direction whilst chasing the local. That was some excellent piloting!😲First time I've seen that area - certainly worthy of #1 goal status. 🚂Lawrence
I think that was another vehicle. I wasn't ever moving in my car while flying but it's fun when I have a driver and can do that! Thanks so much!
Excellent! Our trip to Montana got radically altered at the last second, and instead of driving to Kalispell, we had to fly. Missed the MRL. The one day we spent on Maria’s Pass was during a maintenance window. Railfanning wise it was a disappointment.
Thanks and sorry that's too bad to hear!
Finally got a moment to watch your local video. Great job Guy! Appreciate all your work 🙂That canyon looks incredible! I see why it’s #1 on your list for MRL. Looks especially pretty with the snow dusted everywhere. We get back up there I definitely want to check it out.
Thank you Timothy! Yeah that canyon is spectacular and I've got one more video coming up with another train through there. I'll post that in a couple weeks I think.
💯%.
Never did get the upside-down "M" (W) on the red circle logo -......W Rail Link?
15:00 What a passtime! (work?Nah!)😊
How'd that engineer get that SD40-2XR # 265 to "wave" like that at you? Land Ships on the Montana High mountain pass Sea's.
White on white, on - screen comments?
As always, Dan, Happy Trails!
Thank You.
Addendum:
MRL is owned by The Washington Companies:
When the logo had just the two parallel bars on the left it was known as the "Flying W". With the addition of the lion profile on the upper right the name was changed to either "Lion Head" or "Roaring Lion" logo. It's an alpha-male thing I guess...
You figured it out! Yes W for Washington. Thank you Ron!
Very nice. Thank you for sharing. It does seem to me that Mavic 3 contrast is a little more whitewashed than the Inspire 2, but still a very nice and enjoyable video. Well worth the wait to get my internet fixed so I can watch in full screen mode on my laptop.
Thank you Chaostrain! I actually like the color profile of the Mavic 3 more than the I2. It seems more accurate to me. What you're seeing also could be my color editing as I did try to make this an overall "cooler" feel with a little of a blue tint to keep it accurate with the snowy landscape.
Another goodie! FYI - the BNSF eastbound manifest symbol was H PASKCK. Great drone pilotage through the canyon. Was that the ex-Milwaukee ROW on the other side of the river, also the paved trail under I-90?
Thanks and good to know! Yes that was the Milwaukee in both locations.
Another fun video...Thank you! You know in my area in my state (GA.) we did not get a single snowflake this year...first time I ever remember that!!
Thank you! Wow that would be a record huh? Not a great on at that... I live in Eugene in Oregon which is the South end of the Willamette Valley so snow is also rare but usually at least see it once a year. We did not see any here this year. Plenty in the mountains surrounding us but no the valley floor.
Dan, Any chance that you have footage of the Spokane, Spangle and Palouse Rwy. GP39-2's high vision cab units, in your neck of the woods?
Their ex-Kennecott Copper units.
I haven't but I would like to someday. I am not sure if they have specific days of operation or not but I love that landscape out there. Someday I hope.
I wonder what BNSF has in mind for the spur. I bet they'll close it, but it would be really cool if instead they decide to continue operations on it... How long is that line, n ould it be economical and fiscally reasonable to keep it maintained? How many railroad-operated businesses are in the town?
They will keep it for sure because BNSF loads ballast trains at Pipestone just West of Whitehall. They load several a week it seems. As for other industries no one knows.
