Thanks this really helped as my MTB had that rocking problem when i was adjusting the headset earlier. We couldn't work out what it was but i watched this video and it answered our problem we didn't have the bolts for the handle bars lose. So thanks very much for putting this on youtube.
I'm attempting to service the headset on a department-store bike, and it won't snug down, no matter what I've tried, and I've triple-checked just about every possibility. I've had the headset completely apart at least three times, and after thoroughly cleaning everything and even smoothing out any irregularities on the surface of the steerer, the upper bearings don't seem to seat. There's ample stack height above the steerer (a quarter-inch), all the parts seem undamaged, the ball bearings themselves are in like-new condition, and there's no foreign objects or dirt in the bearings. The cups are well-seated in the head tube. The only anomaly I've turned up, is that the upper race is made of the same plastic as the seals. The one you show in the video looks like brass. I've done this same service job to dozens of other headsets, and I've never seen anything like it. I'm semi-retired and doing this for a friend, and we're both growing impatient, and sometimes I wonder if I'm going batty. It's as if the stem & spacers are bearing down on something else instead of the bearings & race. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
There are a couple schools, but really, at the end of the day you're going to need to get a job at a bike shop. That's how I started. I'm not knocking the schools, but you can learn the same things starting as a bike builder and working your way up! Bike shops are ALWAYS hiring in the spring and early summer. Probably won't be able to get in anytime after early summer though... Good luck, keep me posted
... and remember to re-tighten your stem bolts before riding off! He's doing this at the end, but not mentioning it. I guess most people watching this will need every step. Thanks.
Sorry about the delay, I had a crazy year! Thanks for the comment, you can be sure that I will keep the videos coming on a regular basis now. You're right, I'm not getting rich, but I make these videos because I truly love it. Stay posted!!
Absolutely love the vids. Very informative and to the point. I'm thinking about a career as a bike mechanic. Do I need a certification and if so what is a good school? Thanks.
I have a problem with a clicking noise coming from the headset area on my carbon norco sight. There is no play in the bearings and there are no cracks anywhere. The clicking noise comes under heavy braking or rarely when the front wheel has an impact. Mechanics couldn't figure out why it clicks. It seems to be a problem which solves itself over time (long periods) but comes back upon servicing the headset again. Any ideas as to what may be causing it?
I have good mountain bike.Tried to adjust height of habdlebars.Thought I was clever with the alloy key.Made a balls of it😡I was NOT trained for the task.No cyclying for a week😞But taking bike to repair shop Monday😃The only maintenance I will do on my bike from now on is pumping the tyres!Good video above. But bike maintenance not my cup of tea.
Yea man, people suggest a special tool or a cheap plastic pipe but I just used a hamer + flathead and it worked perfectly. Its a cheap build so I didnt care.
No. You must have all your steerer space occupied with spacers and the stem sitting flush when adjusting the headset bolt to make sure it's all running true.
I love how your videos are short and to the point. You get down to business and in a manner anyone can understand.
👌
Many other videos keep talking about bearings and proper compression of the bearings. I had no idea what they were talking about. Now I do. Thanks!
Great that you show the breakdown of components, cool useful vid!
Thank you! This saved me from having to go to the bike shop, again, for this issue.
The best video I've seen to solve this problem

To lower after removing spacer do I need to cut the steering foundation ? Road bike...
Thanks

headset wont tighten or losen .allen key just spins .so i cant get the forks off to put a spare spacer in and can tighten them ,now what ?
So my handlebars are not spinning well enough, but i still have play in the headset, what to do?
Crown race help on with a “special tool” called a hammer😊🤣🤣
Yea man, people suggest a special tool or a cheap plastic pipe but I just used a hamer + flathead and it worked perfectly. Its a cheap build so I didnt care.
Can i put the top cap and bolt on if im missing a 10mm spacer...?
No. You must have all your steerer space occupied with spacers and the stem sitting flush when adjusting the headset bolt to make sure it's all running true.
My compression ring won’t go in what do I do
my problem is that when im riding i can keep my bars still but my tires turns another way
What can I say other than thank you
and on triple clamp forks.....
poor sound
Thanks Dude
