Maybe sometime you could have your Mom on your channel. ❤😊 That would be fun!

I also have a first born son who really struggled learning to read and we changed curriculums a few times and worked on character building but thanks to the Lord he is reading on his own at the end of the second grade 🙌💕

I was homeschooled in the US in the 90s and it was much like you described, Abeka and Saxon. We had a homeschool shop that we'd go to once a year and buy all our books and that was it. We photocopied a lot to be able to reuse books.
There was no real co-op but we did do 4H mostly on our own but sometimes with other homeschool families. We entered gardening and animal exhibits at the county fair and had an annual camp that was heaps of fun. And there was a monthly forestry class that we went to for a few years. Certainly there was not all the options there are now! It was simpler which had its benefits and drawbacks. The comparison trap of social media is a new and difficult dynamic, but all the ideas and book recommendations are great so it's a double edged sword for sure. I'm so glad to live in the age of pdf downloads and educational UA-cam channels! I don't know how my mom managed without that. I do remember being bored a lot! But not bored enough to want to go to school 😆

Great video! I really appreciate your perspective on the then and now. I think it is spot on and refreshing to hear it's not just me.
I also love not getting a bunch of curriculum just because it's available. It still is not always affordable, so I love that! Your mom sounds incredible!

Would love a video with your mom and how and why they decided to homeschool. 😊.

I love this! Thank you for sharing! I wasn’t homeschooled so it’s fun to hear from this perspective! Plus, your Mom sounds great 😁❤️

Also I used A Beka and Saxon as a kid and I'm currently homeschooling my kids much differently! I live in FL. When I was homeschooled I did a co-op where parents swapped which subjects they taught. I wasn't a part of a co-op very much. I am part of a group where we just meet which is what I prefer.

It's so wonderful how many different ways there are to homeschool :)

I was in one co op in high school that completely changed the way I viewed education. I loved it! It was in a neighborhood with three homes on the same street. One mom at the end taught LA, another had a library in her home and taught history (Charlotte Mason style) , and the last one was math. We would just walk to the next house when we were done with one and go to the Library on Fridays. It was very fun.

Homeschooled from the states here. Yes, we had co-ops! I remember having a bug class when I was in second grade! We had maybe 20-30 students in that one class!

I was homeschooled k-12 and graduated in 2003 and we had an American Girl homeschool group and two mom's would lead each month and teach focused study around the period of history. We also had homeschool bowling, ice skating and skiing. We also had a couple homeschool science classes taught at the college. We used 100 lessons, Saxon and abeka for science and history. Very "traditional" style.

I was homeschooled as well and now homeschool my three, officially homeschooling two. I do hate the judgement I feel parents have towards each other.

I don't think there was so much judgement about different homeschool methods or curriculums back then, either... with us also being overseas homeschoolers, PDF curriculums have very much changed international homeschool and increased access to resources!

      @ThisHomeschoolHouse  Рік тому

Yes, I actually asked my mum about the judgement thing and she agreed that it didn't exist.

I was homeschooled in the early 2000s. We had a lot of people making comments back then. We often got stopped in the supermarket asking why we weren’t in school by tons of people. I used Saxon math for years. There was not as many companies back then, for sure. The only people who where homeschooled back then was the ones wearing jeans skirts and the family wearing matching colored polo shirts.

I’ve seen a difference in homeschooling now and when I was a kid but I’m not sure as I didn’t fully homeschool but my kids are fully homeschooled!!! I remember a traditional homeschool but my brother tried to change things up and made his own style which I probably follow today. It was a mix of styles that we have now!!! I remember ACE pace’s and math u see!!! I love the resources we now have!!! Having a brother 13 years older than me it ment we still had stuff from when he was younger and he was my main teacher!!! I didn’t see the homeschool judgment but my mum remembers ppl judging her for her oldest homeschooling us!!! Our internet as a teenager was very basic, we where one of the 1st to have boardband but was basic!!! I’ve had to teach my kids how to use a basic dictionary!!! We had a homeschool group where we could do a class if we wanted!!! As a Teenager we Organised our sports activities ourselves!!! Most of the parents just chatted unless they where teaching!!! We had to change curriculum as a teenager when we where In Hawaii!!! We where doing it for health reasons and faith!!! I got a opportunity to do a science mission with family and I’m looking into this for my kids!!! I’ve had reading issues with my older kids and it’s cause Patience issues for all of us!!! My kids have lost patience!!!!

I don’t think we have conventions here in Australia either. How I’d LOVE to go to an American homeschool convention!!!

I wasn't homeschooled growing up, but my cousins were. They lived in Michigan (US) and were part of a co-op where they took classes and even had prom! I *think* it was affiliated with the Catholic Church in the area. But I don't think most homeschoolers in the US had access to something like that, just pockets here and there. That was mid - late 90s and early 00s.

Hubby and I both were homeschooled. I'm from nz and he is from USA.
He had a co op at times that were weekly and had lessons and they even had a high school graduation. I don't think co op was a thing they always did as a family but definitely did several years.
I grew up in a small town and had basically nothing homeschool related. We had a yearly camp. That was it. Yes I'm jealous even though im a massive introvert 🤣

I think there were a lot more homeschool-related activities in my town after I graduated but my siblings were still being schooled.

I feel like back then you had to have a “reason” to homeschool or you would get a lot more push back from any and everyone back years ago
