I worked along side and trained with Steve Carolyn as a stone mason back in 88. We mostly repaired the damaged caused by the ships as they entered the the lock at Eastham queen Elizabeth II dock entrance. Froze to the granite a couple of times in the winter on the Quay side. Ļock keepers had some of the most fascinating stories to tell. I year, a sunken car had found its way down to the sea gate side to the lock and got wedged between the lock gates. I'd never of seen the size of such things as one gate had to be flouted out and replaced and the chains, one man would struggle to lift half a link, nevermind a full one. Hello to the slopes gang if you read this. Not forgetting Mr Bradley aka "Bradders" the man in charge of Q.E.II Dock Eastham and Frank his P.A. who would ask if we would do some surveys on the Mersey with Captn Durv and Sunter sintay his number two. Also Mike the painter and Mr Peter Walthew the pump house fitter. Not seen any one of em in 32 years.

Lost count of the amount times I’ve been up the canal mostly to Runcorn while I was a lad sailing on deck for J&A Gardners on the Saint Colman and Saint Oran in the 70s and early 80s then later on Arklow Shipping’s vessels.
I was lucky enough to get as for as Manchester docks when they where still running and had the Manchester Liner ships in their red livery running there. I remember a bar we used it had a old Dakota Airplane at the side of it I forget the name of the bar.

Excellant series of DVD's from Snowbow Productions. Ships to New Zealand my own favorites. I think you can still go on the Manchester Ship Canal trip boat, Liverpool Ferries, go one way they bus you back. Good day out.

I love to see the marvels of ships and engineering of days gone by. The Manchester Ship Canal has always fascinated me for some reason.

Day trips available, full cruise one way and bus you back. They use the Liverpool 'Mersey' Ferry boats. Enjoyable day.

Did the first trip to Caddis Head on the Stolt Kestrel. She had a Hydraulic cylinder to hinge back the funnel. Then we used mop handles to make sure we passed under the test wires.

I was offices steward on the Manchester Merchant, the trip she collided in Montreal, with the Lionel, perhaps wrongly spelt, in 62/63.
