Very nice explanations on what and how to use lock out tools.

Long reach is the best method. Period. You can see what you're doing and don't risk linkage damage or scratching glass or any other type of damage that may occur.

Hi Gordy, I haven't spoke with you for awhile. Don't forget to mention using the airbag when using the long tool to prevent the possibility of scratching the vehicle with the wedge. So people know why we are not suppose to use a slim jim on most cars is because of the electronics and safety side air bags in the doors. I never use the slim jim unless it's a old classic car without electric door locks, windows and such.

I was an LEO during the 70's, 80's and 90's in a more rural county. I was an expert with the slim jim, I call the bends a"customized" slim jim. Looks like that long reach tool would be a winner.

well i still use the slim jim on id say about 50 percent of all my lockouts but long rod is becoming more common the tools in my bag of tricks is long rod two air bags reason for that is plastic wedges can damage the doors, also the wedges are not necessary for slim jim use just push the glass in a smig just be careful not to scuff the glass with sand it helps to sand your slim jim. The wing window tools for the old school trucks with the window guard and we quit using sand paper on the sully strip a long time ago because it scuffs the locks. One thing you want to avoid with the slim jim is pushing the lock back down to hard and you can knock the linkage off and you also want to pull the slim jim out before opening the door or you can knock the linkage off that way.

What's the slimjim grab? (on my car the linkage runs along the inside of the door, but I have the "long tool" type of car, anyway) Does it generally work on any push-button type lock?
So it fits diagonally over the vertical linkage, and the angle jams it on?
And why is the passenger side first?
I know everyone says bad stuff about slimjims, but the name alone is enough to make me want to learn them.

I have a folding slim jim. I think I used it only once, and then on somebody else’s car. Told her before hand that it could pop off the linkage and she was okay with that. Opened the passenger door right up, no damage.
I went in through the passenger side of her car but had not heard that such was advised. I did it bc IF the linkage popped off then the driver side door still worked fine. What is the reason?

fewer gadgets in the passenger door to snag and break. Driver door is generally full of electronics.

toy tool, slim jim, strap and long reach with wedge and air bag this is all i need to open any car. on the strap they use straps on boxes of nails so if you have a friend in construction grab a few from them work just as good and there ruff don't need sand paper

The Sully T/6 tool works so much nicer and a lot less chance of damage. The slim jim is surely outdated. Waiting on my newest buy, the button master lightning rod to replace my trusty T/6.

This definitely helped. Bent the slim jim some used the wedge and tried on the passenger door. 10 seconds later I was in my car. Took longer to get the slim jim out than it did to open my car.

Hey Love the sand paper tip! I use 3M two sided tape on the end of my long wire as more and more new vehicles are getting very slick locks!

you knocked a small rod out of place. you have to take door panel off and stick rod back in. the long horizontal rod to the front of vehicle is attached to a small vertical rod going to the door lock handle. the slim jim knocked the small rod out of the small hole it was resting in. one reason i only use a long tool
