310 - I love games in the Ys series so I thought I'd spend a little time talking about the newest one that was released not long ago. But this game is just didn't look as appealing as Ys 8. Presented in 4K 60 frames per second with HDR for the 12 people who will watch it that way.

I want my copy of Wise IV the Dawn of Wise back!
LOL I was just leaving a comment when I saw your montage - that was perfect 🤣
🤣🤣
Thank you John and Joe for entertaining me with your channel while we are still on lockdown here in UK and working from home.💩
Best ending ever. Laughed so hard. Now I'm wondering what Johnny will share today on his channel. Joe you should totally call him. Lol. Love you both. I love YS games.
Oh, a Ys guy, eh?
PSA: Doing the side quests gives you tons of Nox Points. Almost no grinding required
Yea but theres no solo adol bump gameplay so it still sucks
Ys IX - where the creators only used grey bricks for 95% of textures
and decided to build it for PS3
@@kyotheman69 Then they must've been programming wizards to get the cell processor power pc working on a PS4 and Switch.
and then port it sooooo terribly
The game looks so bland and empty. Idk why it's rated so highly?
@@ertai222 in steam its rated overwhelmlingly positive
the game gets better after...lets say 15 hours but still the story is really boring and world feels repititive and cold...
this rpg is a character-driven rpg and thats why it feels boring because the focus is on the character development and not the actual story
still ys 8 is the best for me
I'm pretty sure I've watched every single GameSack episode at least twice. Yes, I have a problem.
A problem with not enough GameSack, that is. Right now that problem is temporarily solved. Thanks Joe!
i watch this show every day lol some people drink beer to unwind after a long day, I watch an episode of gamesack
@@ic6020 ikr? GameSack is my audio-visual comfort food!
@@Jesse__H same. i was worried dave leaving would ruin it for me but joe does an amazing job. by far my favorite gaming related channel
☝ yes 😁
I've watched every episode including the long console reviews where it's a ton of them back to back in one video at least 3 times. I fail to see the problem.
8:00 “It’s quite a fresh of breath air.”
Mmm, breath air.
Half of one, 6 dozen of another...
Usually I'm very nitpicky about language usage in videos (it's why I'm blocked by Jeremy Parish on Twitter!), but somehow I didn't even notice he said that until I read the comments.
@@GameSack getting two birds stoned at once I see...
quote of 2021 lmaoo
Can you guys explain? I get it's "a breath of fresh air". But what does that inversion cause? Non-native speaker here. To me it seems playing with words. Saying something intentionally out of order. But I don't get it in case it's more than that. Can you guys explain?
Oh my gosh... Wise: The Art of Nepotism is 10/10
ROFL Nepotism = Svågerpolitik.
So damn good ending.

God , I love how this man reviews games, he points out every important detail, like going in depth on the character switching and all. You're the man, you should do more reviews on Games, there are so many games to review and so this channel with never die
Fresh of breath air caught me off guard lol.
Sounds like that show with Will Smith
Getting the phrase 'breath of fresh air' wrong caught me off guard.

Anything Joe game reviews are absolute gold. Gamesack is still the most important YT channel in retro gaming community.
...but would be much better with Dave back.
If only he could pronounce Adol's name correctly
I am proud to be from Douarnenez, Brittany, France, where the mythical city of Ys was located.
Sometimes, at night, I can hear, coming from the depth of the ocean, the church bells of the doomed city.
can you elaborate more about it?
Please tell us more
It's been 17 hours. What time is it over in France?
@@Chaos89P I now live and work in Singapore… 943am in Singapore; 343am in France..
That ending made my entire day, sir. I love these skits. Johnny is such a wise man! We can all learn a lot from him!
It's really odd that Joe missed the part that doing the side quests on a chapter takes away the need to grind the random town battles for the 100 points.
Not a huge fan of side quests. They also would take longer than grinding I think, and you wouldn't get the experience points at all.
@@GameSack wouldve been cool to mention it in the review as an aside
@@GameSack May have helped prevent the burnout, at least I would think so.
@@GameSack What didn't you like about them exactly? I thought they were pretty cool myself since most of them tended to relate back to the main story in some way with there even being some extra Adol(2) bits in them.
@@GameSack side quests are like a 3rd of the length of just grinding 3 points at a time and give free items and other rewards...

"It might take you a while to leave the city... but it's a fresh of breath air when you do"... huh?!? You ok der chief?
why do I have Dragonage 2 vibes
LOL "Fresh of Breath Air" sounds like a title for a Jrpg game.
Haven't played this yet... but I loved every single minute of Lacrimosa of Dana. An unforgetable experience.
I randomly picked up and absolutely loved Ys 8, so I bought Ys 9 with high expectations... and I was disappointed.
I won't say don't bother playing it, because there are some good elements, and some people really love it, but you'll probably have a better time if you aren't expecting it be another Ys VIII.
I enjoy exploring ys 8 over ys 9.
@@derrickcrowe3888 it helps if you don't expect 9 to be "another VIII," that's how you set yourself up for disappointment after a good game
This video was a real fresh of breath air…..
There are so many great homegrown video game reviewers that are so underrated - this channel being one of them. Excellent, in depth, hilarious review! 10/10 would watch and like again!

The refined PS3 era graphics are really hitting the nostalgia hard.
Tbh I think it looks more like a Wii game.
@@VisionThing nothing on the woi looked this "good"
@@jbfarley Not correct at all. Wii games did look like this. Check out for example Arc Rise Fantasia.
I really dont mind it, I have a soft spot for graphics like this
@@charizardoreo It’s a bit nostalgic for sure. But funny at the same time that it doesn’t run at 60 fps, lol.
The enemies and characters looks alright (some enemies even good), but it really is the dull environment dragging it down by a lot.
Me, after spending thousands of hours grinding in Diablo series and various action RPG's, hearing that it takes 15-20 minutes to grind up to 100 Nox,
"Oh, so we're in the kiddie leagues now? All right then" (love you, Game Sack ;) )
Yeah I realized after I said that that it's not THAT bad. LOLZ.
@@GameSack Plus, if you do like 3 side missions between Nox battles, you barely need to grind the Lemures anymore.
Also the game doesn't force you to grind per say for the nox. Doing side quests will also build up the nox metre usually 20-40 points a time.
A "wise" man once said, never enjoy your games with "ease."
Good one
This engine is the same as Ys VIII, it's called the PhyreEngine, which is a free game engine made by Sony. This was their last game using it, and starting from the new Trails game they'll use their in house engine.
Waw I didnt know that....
HDR 4K GameSack???? Count me in, this episode looks beautiful!
Thank you for getting me into Ys Joe. Its one of my favorite gaming series now, because of you.
Definitely glad to see the Ys review! I owe Game Sack many thanks for introducing me to Ys and especially Nihon Falcom. I enjoy Ys a lot, but the Trails series has become my favorite RPG series of all time.
Keep up the great work, Joe!
I've been meaning to get into the Legend of Heroes games (which Trails is a part of), but I want to play the series in order and the PSP remake of LoH3 is so bad that I can't get past it. Legend of Heroes I is excellent, though, I highly recommend trying it out if you haven't!
@@Jordan3DS You don't have to (and can't; Legend of Heroes 2 has never been translated officially or unofficially) play all the earlier Legend of Heroes games to get into the Trails series. Trails in the Sky is a complete reboot of the series. Other than a few small references you're not missing anything by skipping the first five games, and the English PSP versions of 3-5 are terrible anyway.
@@muffinboymcgee7411 Even if 3-5 aren't good, I'd still rather play through the series in order, especially since I've heard there's some lore connections between them and some of the future games.
Joe saying 'even on the freakin Stadia' makes me want to see a review of the console. Already know it sucks but I love hearing the specs and random info.
My friend says it's not bad if your internet is fast.
I think Google abandoned the "console" a while back, so there's no telling how long servers will be up for it or it'll even work after that.
Game streaming has to many issues and internet requirements for it to be good. It's better to download the game and play it than being constanly using your full internet speed and never working as good as real hardware
I’m glad we can always count on Joe for good reviews.
Love the happy console gamer cameo!
I just recently got into Y's after watching countless videos about them. And they're amazing! I'm playing Y's VIII right now and I love the combat, the exploration is fun. It's just a good fun game. Very Zelda like
I want my ice cream cone, I remembered that PS5 thingy.
"Quite a fresh of breath air" the review quote that should be on the box lol
If you haven't noticed yet Joe, the character movements in the cutscenes aren't stiff anymore like previous games, bcoz they were actually motion captured for the first time in a Falcom game, in 2019! Way too late if you ask me.
The cutscene presentation is considerably improved since then with it, including the elimination of their signature "camera panning".
That's neat, I didn't know they used motion capture!
Been playing Ys IX on a base PS4 and I can confirm the game runs at 30 fps. However there are some areas where it can go up to 60 because there are less elements on screen.
I put around 45 hours into it. I feel like im close to the end but havent played in about a month. I should pick it back up. Its a really good game
How do you know how much time you put in to it?

No grinding is needed, I did the side missions and it was plenty enough, oh and the PC version releases
6 Jul, 2021, I agree 100% good review of an excellent game
Yeah, I wanted to shout that to him as I was watching his video. The idea is to do a few side missions to get the Nox points needed, or damned close.
Haha wasn't expecting the HappyConsoleGamer cameo, he's really WISE on this topic! 🤣
Ys is the Murder She Wrote of video games.
About the grind; you really don't have to grind monsters - the subquests give you lots of points to unlock story-areas.
I didn't realize this came out yet so when i saw this uploaded i immediately bought it and have been playing since then. I definitely enjoy doing everything there is to do, the moment i get access to it, like going back to old dungeons and getting the treasure chest i couldn't get without the right power. I think this game is pretty great so far, I'm on chapter Six and I'm super curious as to why there are two Adol's and really want to figure that out for myself. I'm also glad your review didn't really spoil anything for me. I think the grind is definitely fine, even fighting for the Nox points, but as many others stated the side quests give you basically all you need to open the next area, but i find myself fighting them a bunch to get elixirs so i can sell them and make better gear/buy the best consumables. Getting 8500gold in the first chapter is an insane amount of money and all my characters are equipped with the lifesteal gloves, playing on the difficulty after Hard because i have a problem so i need all the help I can get. I love this series as well, I hope to see a great next gen experience on their next release. Saying this game has PS3 or worse graphics is pretty harsh, it's definitely looking and playing like a PS4 game, just a low budget art style. There are worse looking series' out there.
Nice episode! Very informative! Loved the Johnny Millennium cameo at the end!
Was anyone else hoping that Johnny was going to make another chicken sandwich in the outro?
I finally did it. I never played a Ys game and since you've been talking about it for years now I took you by your word and got the Ys I & II Chronicles+ for starters.
I'd honestly recommend just emulating Ys I & II on PC Engine instead of playing the Steam versions. The music sounds WAY better, there's full voice acting, the visuals are far superior, and the gameplay overall is better. The PC Engine version was far ahead of its time when it released in 1989 whereas the Steam version is just the really cheap 2001 remake with little money or effort put into it. By owning the Steam versions you can legally emulate the game, so there's no moral grey area there!
I am currently playing through YS Origin. It's my first ever time playing an YS. Once I've got through it I'm going back to do the games in chronological order. That will be a fresh of breath air once done.
Personally, Ys Origin was my least favorite in the series (just below Memories of Celceta). I did play it on Hard, though, which kind of ruins the game in a lot of ways, so hopefully you're having a better time with it. I highly recommend emulating the PC Engine versions of Ys I - IV, they're the definitive versions of each of those games and put the Steam versions of Ys I & II to shame. Also, Oath In Felghana and Memories of Celceta are very different from the original Ys III and IV, so I would make sure to play the originals first and then the remakes/reimaginings at a later time.
Dude you have the personality of paint drying holy hell how you built such a large subscriber base is beyond me
I hope Dave makes a cameo again soon
Dave is the best
Games like these makes me wish for something like a PS5 Lite or something less powerfull, but cheaper and AVAILABLE. Also, who needs 4K? 1080p is more than enough for me.
Even though I'm a fan of the Wise games, I wasn't sure about this one. But now it's ordered, and I'm looking forward to playing Wise IX soon. Thanks Joe!
Johnny was a requirement for an Ys video! That was excellent, guys
On the grinding aspect he mentioned, the sidequest give a crapton of nox as a reward so if you do all of those it won't take you 20 minutes of mindless grinding monsters
Instead it'd take you 45 minutes of sidequests (depending on the sidequests) and little to no experience points.
PC version is not out till July, Joe. Same as Switch. The good news is that Durante's studio (the guy behind Dark Souls fix and the studio that fixed disastrous Ys 8 launch on PC) is behind the port so I think it will be fine.
Also thank you for the review Joe, you are one of the few people I trust with opinion on Ys, everyone else seems to be either fixated on 8 or Oath in Felghana and nothing else.
You get the truckload of nox points from the chapter sidequests which mitigates the grind pretty much. Great review Joe!
Lol, the Safari Hunt song on Joe's phone! I spoiled that little surprise by reading the song credits for the episode, though. But I would've instantly recognized it regardless.
Wow GameSack’s pumping 4K vids now? Step up
Oooo. Tight gameplay is TIGHT!
Love the review, love the ending part even better, Johnny's second guest appearance I think. First appearance was 7yrs ago wow
Great ! New video to wake up to
Me too bud. Notification whilst on the bog half asleep but gettin up....
I'm totally gonna get that ice cream cone tomorrow...
Oh by the way, the bosses in the Nox are NOT invincible, but they are usually something nuts like level 80 when you're 30. Basically they are meant to avoid as they can even kill your party members while you're not controlling them. They are meant to come back later.
Defeating the bosses in the Nox otherwise gives you a big amount of the 'red crystals', so in some cases it might be faster to kill the boss than finding the rest of the crystals.
4K HDR Beautiful!
A really disappointing few amount of people seem to have noticed..
Nice to see atleast someone did.
Within 5 mins - falling asleep to that show Brittania and now I'm awake!!
YS X: Fresh of Breath Air
There was a huge sale on GOG recently and after wanting to jump in, I went ahead and bought every Ys game available, besides this one. Started with Origin, I'm really enjoying it so far, can't wait to finish it up and move on.
I only played Ys Book 1 & 2 as well as Ys Origins. I need to play more of them . This one looks good
There's a few more available on Steam. And of course there's the ones for consoles.
I highly recommend emulating the English translated version of "Ys IV: Dawn of Ys" for the PC Engine, it's spectacular and easily my favorite Ys game!
I was thinking it be good to hear Joes thoughts on this game and then what do you know!😆
I watched this is 4K and HDR. I appreciate the work you did for this.
Great review, I definitely gotta make time to play this (along with all the other Ys games in my backlog).
FYI in case you were curious Joe, the PS5 actually tracks your play time for all games on the system-level, which is super nice:
Home menu > Profile Icon (upper right) > Profile > Games
NF games have a certain charm factor that many devs/pubs rarely match.
Steambot Chronicles comes close though.
I loved this game, but not quite as much as 8. I played on the base PS4, and it runs at 30 Fps in the city, and 60 everywhere else.
As for the visuals, I can forgive them because the city map is by far the largest unbroken map Falcom has ever made. Which was necessary due to the new traversal abilities. I liked exploring the city too. Overall, Falcom continues to prove they are masters of their craft, and eagerly await their next title.
4k HDR GameSack!? Yes please!
HDR 4k big screen user here! Looks super clean!
I think this is my favorite channel now your videos are so relaxing
I needed that ending. Love it so much.
I hate that I never got into your videos earlier.. I would always see you pop up and would watch a couple, but man, you put out amazing content.
Joe must be the most patient man alive to resist muting all voices after hearing one battle where multiple characters shout over one another at the same time. I couldn't stand hearing that more than twice.
Hella??? Really Joe🤣 Well, you said it right! Sounds like you definitely remember the 90's brother...😎
This game really grew on me, during the first half or so of the game I kept worrying if this game was going to match the excellence of Ys VIII, as I continued playing I stopped caring about that comparison, the games narrative and environment are so unique it stands on its own. I was sad to say goodbye to the characters at the end. I didn't think there was any chance I'd like this game as much as YsVIII, I'd still give it an edge but a very slight one. It's a brilliant game but I hope some new gameplay changes occur in the next Ys game because I can see combat getting stagnant If they continue with the current system.
“fresh of breath air” :)
Shocking how much better Ys VIII looks.
Great review, thank you!
I got to say I love, I love when all you youtubers do sketch together🙌🤞truly are amazing to watch, and then to do it with one of my favorite youtubers besides you guys as well, keep up the amazing fantastic work we love all y'all💖

Awesome review. I have not played any Y's games in almost 20 years. I have a PC engine mini on the way for Ys! I sold my collection in 1999. I had Sega Master System Ys Vanished Omens, Ys I&II, YS III , Y'S IV ( PC Engine only) , and Y's 5 Expert for Super Famicom. Funny how you said you never finished 5, I never did either due to translation. Lots of great memories with this series. I wish Suikoden would get some love from Konami
You should really check out both Ys VIII and IX, they're excellent!
How can I claim that ice cream cone?... Can't wait to play this.
loool you even misspelled NEPISHTIM at the very end just like Johnny does, that's so cooool!! :D
Misspelled?
Wat?
I was in the same boat as you going in, the Monstrum designs looked very overly "anime" and edgy and I had heard from people who played the Japanese version that the game was mediocre. Upon playing it myself, though, I absolutely loved it, it's probably my 2nd favorite Ys game now after Dawn of Ys!
In terms of having to "grind" for Nox points, what you're expected to do is accept side quests and do them as you explore the city. Completing a side quest gives you a boat-load of Nox points, and you'll have more than enough if you do them and fight battles regularly. Also, you actually can see how many hours you've played in one of the menus on the pause screen, it personally took me around 52 hours to do everything except for 3 of the sidequests (which are permanently missible for some reason) and a couple of the trophies.
Speaking of the visuals, I personally thought that the game looked really nice, although there were some points that the FPS would dip a bit. I'm the kind of person that puts art style over graphical horsepower, though, so I'd much rather prefer a game with a nice style and "lower quality" textures like Ys IX over something with bland, soulless hyperrealistic visuals with no sense of style like most of the triple A games we get these days.
Overall, the game probably has my favorite cast of party members of the games that feature the team mechanic, a very well designed set of areas and main city, some great music, and a surprisingly interesting story that doesn't involve the apocalypse for the first time in a while. The fact that you can really just stick to one character in combat this time around was much appreciated, too, I've never been a fan of having to swap characters every two seconds against your will. I also adored the means of exploration like gliding, grappling, and climbing, it gave me huge Breath of the Wild vibes and made every second of exploration a blast!
I know you said not to expect more videos in HDR, but this video looked especially incredible because of it.
The graphics did not bother me overall, and I played on a PS4 non-pro. The 30 FPS was solid, so it wasn't wildly annoying. That said, it WAS far less colorful than Ys 8, but I attributed it to the tone and style of the game. The Ys 8 was a wild island after all, the gray tone of the city is kinda on purpose in contrast. Ys 9 traded lots of the exploration for the verticality compared to Ys, which was more flat, with just minimum jumping.
I believe Ys 9 is less good than Ys 8 overall, but only because Ys 8 exists and there needs to be a winner. If Ys 8 didn't exist, I might consider Ys 9 to be the best game in the series. What I did note is that it recycled may gameplay elements form Ys 8 with a new coat of paint, like instead of the bird you give food to, it's the church. The tower defense you touched upon was also in Ys 8, and just as required, but take a more important role in the story early on. The only time it felt that the defense made 'pressure' on the story of Ys 8 was near the end. Here it's a constant reminder.
Ys4 would be the best in the series. Tsk tsk tsk
Great review Joe! I love Ys games too and agree that VIII was a masterpiece, but I'm really loving IX! Hope Johnny gets his game back 🤣
Your the one who turned me on to Ys and I think 8 was my favorite so far, just started this one though so we will see.
I don't even care about the Y's series, and this review is gold.
