I've played it on pc for over a 100h. Mostly because my gf and her friend at the time really loved it. But I don't think it should be compared to games like the very janky, but fun Ark or the incredibly made Valheim. The games presentation is great, it has a very solid and unique style, fun characters, good insect/mob designs and pretty ok music. But the a.i., pathfinding, progression, grind and even the story somewhat are lackluster at best and broken at worst. I don't need a story to enjoy such a game as Valheim, which has one of the best progression arcs IMHO has entertained me a lot more. But this game needs a story to be fun and it's just serviceable. This might be personal, but I've played so many survival games and Grounded has felt like the one with the biggest gap between everything feeling like a chore and gratification. It often feels either too easy or unfair, instead of providing a balanced and fun challenge. This has mostly to do with the progression and the insects a.i.

They should create a lock 1440p Resolution mode with FSR3 to scale the image to 4K,locking the game at 40FPS, with VRR support and 120hz that would play and render much better the objects in Ps5 and Series X, and maintain a good 1440p resolution most of the time, creating a 40FPS mode on series S and using FSR3 can indeed increase the resolution from 1080p to a 1440p upscale image that would be so much better, so it be a win win for this game to have a 40FPS mode in all consoles.
Im confused as to why they chose a game like Grounded for a Switch port. The realistic visuals and graphics would be harder to replicate than some of the other Xbox exclusives, like Hi-Fi Rush or something. Still, I do find it impressive how they managed to downscale the game and make it run properly.
Rejoice Grounded fans. With today's patch the Playstation 5 version no longer has the stutter it has had since release. I can't speak to frame rate drops or other issues but my old eyes doesn't see a stutter on camera movement anymore after the patch. There is still a stutter when the game Auto-Saves but I believe that exists on all versions because it does it on Steam PC version as well.
More than likely just didn’t care. Keep in mind they left the 120 FPS mode bug in Pentiment for a year and only fixed it when it was released multiplat, so they likely just didn’t care.

But the frame rate being so unstable and frame pacing being all over the place is just...strange. A few wobbles during big moments would be understandable but this is falling from just basic traversal.
Great tech review, Tom! It's awesome that everyone gets to try out this amazing game now, but what an absolutely bizarre mix of performance issues. The fact that they could get it running on Switch is nothing short of incredible, but that is by far the largest performance gap between a Sony/MS version that I've seen since the 360 generation. What on Earth happened during their development for PS5?? Everyone should try this game out, though! The sense of discovery while exploring that backyard is second to none. I've been playing survival games as long as they've been a thing, and this one had me saying "whooooaaaaaa" more than a few times.
It's funny to see ps5 and XSX trading blows game to game. I know they're "roughly the same power" with a slight edge to XSX for TFLOPs, memory bandwidth, CPU speed, etc., but apparently ps5 has a higher pixel fill rate. So, they trade blows depending on the game and what's on screen. Interesting indeed. Also, for the money, I ❤ XSS. It's a great low $ option to play the latest games. Good stuff and options all around imo
This game was one of biggest surprises when I first played it, it hooks you in especially if you enjoy the nineties style throughout. Also, going all out on the souls like combat adds a lot to sense of scale near the bottom of the food chain.
It’s crazy to think that this game runs on a PS5/SeriesX and on a Switch. Have to give props to the switch for holding its own cause the technological gap is massive!
It looks fine on PS5. Most people aren’t looking for these small details that you really can only identify with a side by side comparison. Looks like a fun game
Nah, it isn't fine on Ps5. As soon as you start building a base the frames drop even more to the point I have to take a break for the sake of my eyes.. They should have tested this as well as it is a major part of the game.
Yes. It says for every tested game on the Steam store. Including specific issues. Though this game seem to have none, apart from the mandatory MS registration.
If they don’t have the time and resources to properly port the PS5 version, they they should at least put the current settings as on optional, VRR mode, and adjust the default option to whatever results a stable FPS. But I would welcome the same, loosely optimized version of Helldivers 2, as long as the frame rate will stable. Resolution and visuals are second to stabil framerate and crossplay multiplayer.
the online aspect is broken cant even play or host to invite my xbox friends to join me.And NO my connection is fine im on a wired connection for my ps5
I've been looking at getting Grounded either for my Series X, or my PS5. Thank you for the video, you've pushed my purchase over to the Xbox. Though i still like the PS5 controller better. 😉
I'm sure the framerate issues will get cleaned up. It's great that the catered audience will have more chances of finding others to play with online. This environment looks perfect for VR, too bad the framerate might be a hindrance to that happening on the PS5 version/no patch of the native version. Curious if Microsoft gets this released on the Meta Quest though. And from there, who knows.
@@XZ-III Don’t remember them being that low. I’ve watched most of the DF videos recent years, though. If there are many more, then somehow I’ve missed them. But I’m not playing third party AAA games on my Switch either.
Grounded is a fantastic game, I have it on Steam and PS5/PS4 now. It's a real shame Microsoft & Obsidian released such a shoddy port on the PS5. I even made a post on Obsidian's forums about it after purchasing it last week. I'm happy to see DF actually covering it because a user complaining about the frame rate/stutter isn't usually taken as seriously as something like DF. Hopefully this gets the ball rolling on performance/bug fixes, if they haven't already started before this DF video. Not putting your best foot forward on a new platform is a bad look for both MS & Obsidian and it only hurts your IPs and this one, again, is fantastic. Definitely skip it on the PS5 for now if frame rate/stutter bothers you. Again fantastic game, Obsidian's best imo, and I've only played it solo (200hrs PC) so I'm sure it's even better playing with friends.

No mention of the ratio between cpu vs gpu implementation and usage among all consoles. Obviously the Xbox one and Xbox X should have better gpu optimization?? Using more cpu is more taxing.
Strange.. For such few graphical advantages on ps5 compared to x, the disparity is just too much in performance considering the max resolution achievable on each (12.. Something p on ps5, compared to 4k on series x)..
I would like Stem Deck to be added to these comparisons. Switch becomes the "handheld" analogue. But I think you can have better handheld experiences. Why Steam Deck and not another hand held pc? Because it's basically the only one that is a "console". A OS and set HW level that creates a whole.
I agree, however, Switch is actually the most popular console, selling almost double the Xbox Series and PS5 combined. So, naturally they're going to use it as a comparison. I'd much rather see them review more powerful handhelds though like Steam Deck and ROG Ally.
yeah but its not a "console" its a hand held PC where you can change the settings you cant do that with consoles so this becomes null. steam deck is it's own with better comparisons with other pc hardware. But it's whatever
This will probably be the last major port to Switch that I'll be impressed by. I've been enjoying it on my Switch in handheld and my PS5 on the big screen but the Switch is really showing its' age on this one. Isn't the Tegra X2 from like 2012 or 2013 or something? I'm amazed at some of these ports but it's starting to get hard to excuse the resolution drops. It gets pretty silly when we are throttling back the resolution to 360p on a 720p OLED. I can handle like 600p or even 540 or something in that range but it's a struggle even in handheld. I'm still very impressed by the Grounded port for switch, don't get me wrong. Hope to see the Switch 2/Super Switch/Switch Pro or whatever Nintendo calls it next year. It's more than time for it.
I wish devs would iron out preformance THEN push it to the best resolution they can. I feel like resolution is always king over performance and I don’t get it, I would take 1080 with a mostly locked frame rate any day, I use a 1440p monitor for series x so I guess it’s a bit different than Playing on a 60 inch tv or whatever, then again what do I know.
I'm pretty surprised by the Ps5 version. I think it should be able to run in complete parity with the series X. As for the switch version, yeah, it loses a lot in the translation, BUT, you can take it on the go which this kind of game is made for.
Given the context of what’s available in the game though, nothing screams pushing to the hardwares limits though. The really bad fps struggles definitely shouldn’t be a thing.
It’s a lazy port just like those pc ports that shouldn’t have bad performance but they do, it the same thing there nothing visually impressive with this game

Everyone should try this game out, though! The sense of discovery while exploring that backyard is second to none. I've been playing survival games as long as they've been a thing, and this one had me saying "whooooaaaaaa" more than a few times.
We have ppl on Twitter arguing over slight shadow differences.
I'm not surprised. People are crazy on twitter.
Ye it’s funny lol, the fanboys are so incredibly sad.
Twitter is literally a cesspool of adults acting like children at the kindergarten playground.
Did Obsidian ever fix this through Updates?
Would love to see what an unlocked Switch with all clocks at max for CPU, GPU and memory them run this game and test it.
I'm still fascinated by those switch ports and like to play them...weird :D
Right?? I know it's the worst version, but there's something about that, idk what. Playing them is kinda charming
This game was one of biggest surprises when I first played it, it hooks you in especially if you enjoy the nineties style throughout. Also, going all out on the souls like combat adds a lot to sense of scale near the bottom of the food chain.
Don't sleep on this game once fixed if you have anyone to play this. It's beautiful!
I had to double check my resolution set for this video. My god does switch look so blurry.
Bit unfair to compare the poor switch to running on next-gen consoles. They should have compared to the XOne version.
All Switch games are blurry
Switch 2 will double that 360p.
@@summus314yeah UE4 games were quite the mixed bag on xbox one running at 720p or 900p
Well yeah it's the switch🤨
It’s crazy to think that this game runs on a PS5/SeriesX and on a Switch. Have to give props to the switch for holding its own cause the technological gap is massive!
It looks fine on PS5. Most people aren’t looking for these small details that you really can only identify with a side by side comparison. Looks like a fun game
Nah, it isn't fine on Ps5. As soon as you start building a base the frames drop even more to the point I have to take a break for the sake of my eyes.. They should have tested this as well as it is a major part of the game.
Lowering shadow in Ps5 might do better.
Can this be played on the steam deck?
Yes. It says for every tested game on the Steam store. Including specific issues. Though this game seem to have none, apart from the mandatory MS registration.
really love the shrunken premise, we need it in more games that arent about base building and survival
I'm glad this came to switch. Saw someone stream it and it looked good, although I can play it on PS5 I think I'd rather have it portable.
And how does it look and run on a PS4 or PS4 pro ?
Don't think I've heard 360p mentioned since the 90s retro games. :P
So you've slept on like most switch ports that render at that res?
@@XZ-III Don’t remember them being that low. I’ve watched most of the DF videos recent years, though. If there are many more, then somehow I’ve missed them. But I’m not playing third party AAA games on my Switch either.
@@Str0b0 well even exclusives can reach that low. Xenoblade 2 alone I remember reaching like 378p-540p.
They need to polish up that performance but even then some weird pros and cons with the PS5 port 🤔 no idea why the res is *that* low.
Let’s be clear, this is basically a Honey I shrunk the Kids game.
Wow that switch port…yikes Nintendo desperately needs that switch 2 😅
seriously lol
It's also out for ps4 I think
It's also been over a decade since PS4 came out and over 3 years since ps5 released
@@jjnet123uhhhh... ok?
@@StarmenRock im saying why would they look at PS4 when not many will be playing on that
@@jjnet123 still has a huge userbase since ps5 is notoriously expensive in most of the world. wouldnt doubt that there are more people with active ps4s than ps5s especially if you count brazil, india and china
@@StarmenRock it's not expensive, halfway through the console generation at this point are we expecting these people to just wait for ps6?
Building a base on Ps5 will bring the framerate down considerably more. Which is messing my eyes up sadly. I hope they will come with some optimization fixes but until then I will have to take a break :(
No mention of the ratio between cpu vs gpu implementation and usage among all consoles. Obviously the Xbox one and Xbox X should have better gpu optimization?? Using more cpu is more taxing.
Beautiful OST.
8:30 SSR on PS5 looks a lot better, no word on that?
The ps5 version needs work to fix the frames, but apart from that I'm loving it!
This is such a great game, glad everyone gets to play it now.
Strange.. For such few graphical advantages on ps5 compared to x, the disparity is just too much in performance considering the max resolution achievable on each (12.. Something p on ps5, compared to 4k on series x)..
Still looks pretty good on Switch.
Grounded is a fantastic game. If you haven't played it and only own a PS5 or Switch, definitely grab it!
It’s a shame, I want to play it on switch but the best thing about Grounded for me on Series X is the visuals.
Survival games feel like work.
It's more than time for it.
man the ps 5 frame rate is messed up .
yeah weird
Due to the lack of interesting games for analysis, could you do a new analysis of The Lord of the Fallen, the performance has improved considerably
Switch graphics being a ps3 pro, it's doing fairly well 🤔
Remembers old times when each version was visible different.
360p - 600p at 30FPS....... how do Switch players do it?
A very strange one here. The performance on ps5 doesn't make sense. Hopefully they can patch the game to be smoother.
The Switch 2 should have came out this year.
this was such a fun game on pc
I wish devs would iron out preformance THEN push it to the best resolution they can. I feel like resolution is always king over performance and I don’t get it, I would take 1080 with a mostly locked frame rate any day,
I use a 1440p monitor for series x so I guess it’s a bit different than Playing on a 60 inch tv or whatever, then again what do I know.
So... halfway in and I still don't know what this guy is saying as in should I buy
Wrong channel for that... Those are more traditional reviews this is tech review. Not a lot of people split those
@@XZ-III ah...appreciate that info
"Texture resolution is lowered around the garden" 💀😂😂
Differing shadows in hi-fi rush, likenits a big issue 😂
There is a ps4 version right?
Meanwhile fanboi developer be like, we can't make games for series S, it's too limiting. But releases game on switch and ps4
Did you turn off depth of field blur when playing on PS5?
Its honestly pretty bad either the xbox and or the ps5 dont run this at 4k60. Its visually appealing, but not technically that impressive.
Rofl microsoft said. Fuck it up on the ps5 or you are all fired. 😂😂😂
We need weather effects like rain n so on
I'm pretty surprised by the Ps5 version. I think it should be able to run in complete parity with the series X. As for the switch version, yeah, it loses a lot in the translation, BUT, you can take it on the go which this kind of game is made for.
Well actually the series x should always have a higher res-bigger GPU
Given the context of what’s available in the game though, nothing screams pushing to the hardwares limits though. The really bad fps struggles definitely shouldn’t be a thing.
It’s a lazy port just like those pc ports that shouldn’t have bad performance but they do, it the same thing there nothing visually impressive with this game
Wasn’t there a game similar to this on the Mac? The character is like a caveman or something
When df will review ark survival ascended?
looks like switch port is decent
Obsidian removed the HDR-Support of this game.
Bad fps and res? Bad port
I didn't know people played games for shadows lol
They do when you're the kind of person to battle over your favorite plastic box.
Lets not get this twisted. Shadows are important. They can straight up ruin your game if none are there. Especially without good ambient occlusion.
Finally a bad port from Microsoft 🙂
LOL. I bet the PS5 performance issues will be "sorted out" soon enough. Lets give microsoft a break, the Hifi-Rush being worse on xbox was was kinda embarrassing.
@@TheGrizz485 any Game ever being worse on your plattform than on the competitor is embarrassing. The tag line "strongest console in the world" didn't hold on.
The lead is platform does better. Shocking.
Steam Deck verified ✅
I wonder how a modded switch with overclock could help this game.
SteamDeck?
@@ThinkTinkh Idk why but on the steam deck the performance is terrible.
@@unlimitedslash it all depends on expectations I think 🤔
@@ThinkTinkh nah, low settings 720p with fsr on performance, gpu setup at max clocks and no W limiter, was getting a crappy 25ish fps, maybe indoors in some dungeons i would see maybe 40fps tops, but it was unstable, terrible experience, maybe it's due to proton incompatibilities or something, should try it no with the newer versions.
@@unlimitedslash which game?
Damn, so not properly prepared for PS5. That sucks.
No PS4 comparison?
People say specs don't matter & gameplay > visuals, but the Switch has proven specs & visuals can HEAVILY hurt gameplay.
Nintendo needs new hardware yesterday! It's hard to enjoy anything on my Switch anymore.
It's good to see PS users enjoying Xbox games so much. This is a great game.
It is funny. This and Pikmin 4 are fresh in my mind and yeah… Pikmin 4 looks a lot better to me.
