Very nicely done. Like the solo, the discovery flight is really memorable. Thrilling, a bit unsettling, and so many thoughts of what training will be like. The main feeling: holy moly, this is really cool. :)
Well I don't have a discovery story to share. I do have one experience in a small aircraft. Got to go up in an old Korean War era "Bubble Bell" helicopter for an aerial tour of the Washington coast near Ocean Shores. Was an interesting flight but didn't do much for me as while I know the physics of how helicopters fly in my mind they shouldn't. Wish I knew more about the whole PPL process when I was younger. Might have gotten to do a discovery flight when I would have fit into a GA aircraft more easily. Not sure how well I would do now as I'm 6'4" and way over weight. Also a lot of my height is in my torso so seat height in most cars is too high. I usually have at most 2" of head room and can usually cant see the traffic signals when first in line at a stop light. 'Bout the only vehicle that i have been truly comfortable in has been a semi-truck. Still i have a love for flight and enjoy this kind of video. Seeing people discover the joy of flight is amazing. Some of the videos I have seen the "student" is shocked that they are the one that is doing all the control inputs and start out tense but gradually relax as the instructor is just talking to them. Had a similar experience driving a semi in a strong crosswind for the first time. Kansas can be brutal.
My first Discovery flight did not go as well as you treated this young pilot. I flew out of Lake in the Hills airport in Illinois, and my teacher for that flight decided it would be great fun to see how I reacted to a 60 degree turn. I was a little ill, but stayed with the plane and did not get physically sick. (early Saturday morning, no breakfast yet). after a few months period, I decided to get another Discovery flight with a different instructor. What a difference! He was positive, assuring, and what I really liked about him as an instructor, was he would "hide" three pieces of tape on the airplane prior to inspection. If I did not find all three pieces, we did not take off, because I had not inspected the airplane properly. To this day I remember that rule. When I have been able to fly, I look at everything! Great job Second guy. I believe you Chris, are a very very good instructor, and have these future pilots feeling their aircraft as an extension of themselves, so they know to pay attention when the airplane does something unplanned. Keep up the great work on your channel and in your life. Be well.
My discovery flight was really boring and instructor did not tell me basic things for take off etc he was assuming I do know already ! I learnt from this video, I like your way of instructing sharing knowledge and practical right away.
Always awesome to see that smile when they get themselves airborne for the first time. Could never afford to get my ppl, but did take one demo flight in a katana...and flew with several friends in their aircraft and had more time at the controls. I'm 63 and hope I can still achieve my dream one day...but it's nice to watch others achieving theirs! What a beautiful place to learn how to fly...though I imagine winters must be brutal. Be richly blessed today and always in the Wonderfully Beautiful and All-Powerful name of Yeshua (Jesus in Hebrew)!!!
The smile on her face is what will make her a good student and pilot! One year ago I had my discovery flight, and about 12 months later I am a licensed private pilot. What an amazing joourney it is.
Nothing like having your first discovery flight... except, watching someone else having their first discovery flight. Perfect zoom in reaction on the takeoff. HOPE YOU PURSUE AVIATION SIENNA! Congrats on your first flight and log time in.
Great video. As a kid,I went up for many rides at our local small airport. When new owners took over there weren't any rides, but only Discovery flights. Of course a 17 year old couldn't afford lessons, however they offered me a part time job evenings and weekends-office and snack bar cleaning, washing planes, etc. For every 8 hours I worked, I got a lesson, alternating between ground school ( with books included), trainer and an occasional flight. Not bad pay in 1972. Unfortunately, my mom decided my high school diploma was more important, so it went by the way side. Over the years I be taken a flew other flights, but helicopters replaced the planes. Lots of rides all over and some stick time in R22s and R44s over the years. At 67, it's all behind me now, that's why enjoy these videos.
With a view like that on your discovery flight how could you not fall in love with flying! I have my discovery flight in a few days, my biggest concern is my fear of heights, praying that I can overcome it and fall in love with aviation
I don’t get tired of seeing that panel. And I don’t get tired of you vids! Today I did my first solo and 2 days ago my son did his! So much inspiration from all your content. Thank you!
I remember my discovery flight. I was doing some standard rate turns (though I didn't know it at the time.) I was so focused on being dumbfounded at the views that I didn't even pay attention to the instruments. I remember the instructor saying calmly, "ok we've lost about 500' on that turn." I have no idea how this girl managed to focus on a takeoff for the first time haha
I really enjoy taking friends and family up for flights around the Denver front range. Last weekend I took a family of four (2 separate flights) up and it truly sparked an interest in the entire family. Love you videos.
Chris, Great job on the video. I know I have said it many times but you fly in one of the most beautiful areas. Glad I got to enjoy it with you and that so many others do as well. Thank you to you and Mike Patey for giving back to get these young people into aviation. They are the future. Great job guys.
Excellent video Chris. So glad to see you working with Mike Patey for the discovery flights. You are a excellent teacher. Keep up the great work as always. Safe skies 🤘🇺🇸🛩️
Simply a superb effort on your part making the first flight educational and entertaining. Low stress and really a marvelous way to experience the wonder of flight. Needless to say the scenery around Homer is stunning.
Great video Chris! My first discovery flight was 1976 out of Midway Airport. My late wife and I were driving by Midway, it was not busy then, she went up with one instructor in a Cessna 150 I went up with another. It was a bumpy day, she hated it, I loved it. Went on to get my commercial, instrument, and CFII within a year. Took me about another year to get her up in the air again. Eventually she would go places with me, even to Alaska. She never liked going for the hundred dollar hamburger, (which back then was about 50 bucks). Oh by the way, the cost of a discovery flight then was $10.
Great video Chris. One of the best experience flight videos I've seen. Your calm and easy to understand style is ideal for a new student who's full of adrenalin. I love when the smile appeared on her face as you took off...the joy of flight...gets me everytime. 😎
My discovery flight was paid for by my mom for my Birthday when I was 16 in 2007. Flew in a Piper Cherokee with my pregnant sister and other sister in the back seat to ride along. Was a blast
I just discovered this video and it was really good! I have my discovery flight tomorrow as a matter of fact. Your Cessna looks a bit older based on the yoke? I will be flying on a 2008 172 Skyhawk!
Very cool, my 1st flight was in 1968 so I don't remember it now. I do remember when the instructor stepped out onto the runway and said "it is all yours, go play for a while"
G,day Chris at AOA from Sydney Australia. That was a good "pickup" on the radio comms returning back to the runaway. It was unclear whether the planes were departing or had just landed and off runway. 🌏🇦🇺
I wish there would have been some comments from the student. Excellent show otherwise....You are obviously a great instructor...I had a log book in a Piper Cherokee 140 back in about 1976, but then I decided to buy a new pickup...To keep up with the Joneses...Price was 30.00 hr back then....should have kept it up.
Looks like she enjoyed it. Did a great job on handling the plane. Thank you for the video. Hope the family and you are doing well. Take care - Be safe and God Bless.
I love this and how she loved it. 38 now but wish I had taken my mother's offer to send me to flight school at 15, but still maybe do it myself someday. really enjoying playing around on MSFS 2020.
My first discovery flight i did in denver Colorado got me slight air sick due to the turbulent air of the mountains and foot hills. It was also 18kt Gusting winds also which did not help. Now im over 60HR's in to my PPL and preparing for Written FAA Test and then Check Ride.
Great video. Soloed at 16 passed check at 17 in 1968. Grandson is going on discovery flight this month. I hope he catches the aviation bug the way I did.
Yup out of YSCB in a Piper Warrior just before the coof hit. Was great fun holding short waiting for the big boys to land. PPL is way more expensive here in aus than you guys are paying :)
Gotta love Homer. Just about ready to solo here in Palmer. Already have a flight plan ready to go from PAAQ to PAHO for when I start my 150nm cross country
so beautiful always want to do a discovery flight but I get scared to think what would happen if the engine cut out suddenly when you are over that huge lake
Awesome to see that first reaction at liftoff. You just can’t explain that feeling. After completing the new avionics, is your next project the engine or are you far from tbo?
Awesome video Chris and thanks for sharing. Can you make a video only on rudder pedals. I just made flight sim. for myself and started using rudder pedals and it feels very weird to turn plane right and left. Can you explain in that video which rudder pedal is used for which direction etc..
When making a right turn in addition to pulling back the yolk, don't we have to hit the right rudder to correct the yaw as indicated in the turn-coordinator? I am going to for the Discovery Flight soon myself.
Good video but just to say that not all ‘old’ people have trouble steering with their feet - I’m ‘old’ and have paraparesis and still have no trouble steering with my feet with only 20 hours under my belt. That being said, it was weird. I love flying, the first thing I’ve managed to achieve since my injury in 2008. Hope the young lass takes it up as I’m sure she’ll love it 👍
My discovery flight was steep turns, power off and power on stalls. Just out side of barvo airspace jfk. Not as nice as this one I would love to fly in Alaska.
Hey, Ive got a question. I’ve got an interest in possibly doing one of these. Do you do these flights on clear days only or does it not matter that much?
I have one whole hour in my log from a Disco Flight, unfortunately, it was a dream that will not be realized. With inflation and gas prices, no PPL for me! I guess I will have to watch all of these videos!
I don't know what you do different from every other youtuber when you're holding your camera, but your audio ALWAYS sounds like you're in a studio. It always puzzles me how you get it to sound that good
Did you all enjoy the little training tidbits from this video? Do you remember YOUR Discovery Flight?
Very nicely done. Like the solo, the discovery flight is really memorable. Thrilling, a bit unsettling, and so many thoughts of what training will be like. The main feeling: holy moly, this is really cool. :)

That smile says _EVERYTHING_. Loved it.
Love this comment, especially your last sentence. God bless, and wishing you a happy, blessed, and prosperous New Year!

I'm 16 and I just had my discovery flight and it was one of the best things I've ever experienced.
Did u get ur ppl?

I feel like fear of heights has mainly to do with the lack of control.
Hi! How did it go?
She’s a natural! Great job on your discovery flight.
Love that you showed her getting her first logbook entry.
I don’t get tired of seeing that panel. And I don’t get tired of you vids! Today I did my first solo and 2 days ago my son did his! So much inspiration from all your content. Thank you!
Great instructor, she was so happy!
Yay! She even got herself a logbook! Now only 39 more hours to go! Keep going girl!😊
I remember my discovery flight. I was doing some standard rate turns (though I didn't know it at the time.) Chris, so patient, kind and curious. What a great instructor. Keep it up!
I just saw the video where she did her first solo Congrats and keep on going
I´m feeling so happy by watching this!
That smile on the takeoff, I'm sure we all experienced that moment.
Thank you for sharing!
I have my cfi check ride coming up and I'm searching UA-cam for examples of keeping it simple for a new student and this is a perfect video
I really enjoy taking friends and family up for flights around the Denver front range. Last weekend I took a family of four (2 separate flights) up and it truly sparked an interest in the entire family. Love you videos.
Incredible video. Sienna looks so relaxed, as though she is a "natural". Kudos to you and Mike Patey!
Chris, Great job on the video. I know I have said it many times but you fly in one of the most beautiful areas. Glad I got to enjoy it with you and that so many others do as well. Nice video. You make it easy, and you put your heart out in teaching/ communicating, so your student gets it. God Bless.
Simply a superb effort on your part making the first flight educational and entertaining. Low stress and really a marvelous way to experience the wonder of flight. Needless to say the scenery around Homer is stunning.
Thanks
Thanks so much for the support! *Her First Solo!* ---> ua-cam.com/video/Zhmqyx_fujE/v-deo.html
Chris, the look on her face says it all as you become airborne - the seed is sewn - congratulations Sienna and greetings from OZ
Great video Chris! My first discovery flight was 1976 out of Midway Airport. Smilemaker 3000! I’m in my 50s and can tell you that feeling never goes away.

it's cool that Patey sponsors this. he's cooler the more I learn about him.

Lover her smile when she lifted off
I love the CLEAR! Do that in every video!
G,day Chris at AOA from Sydney Australia.
That was a good "pickup" on the radio comms returning back to the runaway. It was unclear whether the planes were departing or had just landed and off runway.
🌏🇦🇺
Aw mate, where you flying out of, Bankstown? Camden?
I wish there would have been some comments from the student. Excellent show otherwise....You are obviously a great instructor...I had a log book in a Piper Cherokee 140 back in about 1976, but then I decided to buy a new pickup...To keep up with the Joneses...Price was 30.00 hr back then....should have kept it up.
I remember about that same time I paid $5 for a discovery flight in a Cessna 150 and lessons were $25 an hour.
My discovery flight in Manassas Regional near Dulles Airport in 1996 was $35.00...lessons were then $55.00 per hour.
I took my discover flight in June. I 100% recommend it to anyone who’s even a little bit interested in flying.
Looks like she enjoyed it. Did a great job on handling the plane. Thank you for the video. Hope the family and you are doing well. Take care - Be safe and God Bless.
Great to see someone using Mike Patey's offer for Discovery flights....
She's a natural flyer.
I’m 13, and am planning a discovery flight in only one week! I’m very exited and can’t wait to see it.
Excellent discovery flight. I especially liked that you made an entry in her new log book. Well done.
Billy - N99601
8:00 that is a fantastic AOA indicator. I hadn't noticed it 'til this video.
We've only recently started doing this videos AFTER the panel install, and I didn't have that AOA working until this year.
I love this and how she loved it. 38 now but wish I had taken my mother's offer to send me to flight school at 15, but still maybe do it myself someday. really enjoying playing around on MSFS 2020.

Yes I was 18 and was in Ruston LA
Louisiana Tech :)
Awe first flight crazy it was only a year ago
I smiled before she did 😊😊😊😂 she did amazing
First logbook entry after a TIF is always a good one....
Yup out of YSCB in a Piper Warrior just before the coof hit. Was great fun holding short waiting for the big boys to land.

Just plan awesome,I hope she keeps air under her wings!
Nice scenic flight looking forward to see if she got the flying bug.
She’s much more brave than me on my discovery flight!! I was nervous so maneuver!
Awesome to see that first reaction at liftoff. You just can’t explain that feeling. After completing the new avionics, is your next project the engine or are you far from tbo?
she’s cute lol and i’m impressed that she’s impressed
Tommy boy "did I hear a 9er in there " 😂
Awesome video Chris and thanks for sharing. Can you make a video only on rudder pedals. I just made flight sim. for myself and started using rudder pedals and it feels very weird to turn plane right and left. Can you explain in that video which rudder pedal is used for which direction etc..
Yes I can. I'm actually doing a series of videos coming up soon, and Ill have a camera on the pedals a lot of the time.
@@angleofattack Thank you
@@angleofattack wow, awesome 👍
When making a right turn in addition to pulling back the yolk, don't we have to hit the right rudder to correct the yaw as indicated in the turn-coordinator? I am going to for the Discovery Flight soon myself.
Reminds me of the old days, 1960ish.
Remember my discovery flight , the view looked so beautiful, the reason I’m working on my ppl is because I enjoy scenery

Discovery flights are amazing! I'm hoping to go on one in a year or two, and start flight training soon... really exciting!
You are a good man
My discovery flight was steep turns, power off and power on stalls. Just out side of barvo airspace jfk. Not as nice as this one I would love to fly in Alaska.
Nice! But I'm wondering - how can you tell the headwind from the attitude gauge at 11:08?
I am 64. My discovery flight was a year ago.
"Weather is better than 5000 and 5". Is that the cloud ceiling height and visibility?
Yes.
Hey, Ive got a question. I’ve got an interest in possibly doing one of these. Do you do these flights on clear days only or does it not matter that much?
I wish it would be so easy Im terrified. Havent gotten past sim. < sigh >
new electronics sure did help
I have one whole hour in my log from a Disco Flight, unfortunately, it was a dream that will not be realized. With inflation and gas prices, no PPL for me! I guess I will have to watch all of these videos!
Try gliders. Once you get a bit of skill and a good weather day you can stay up as long as you want without burning fuel other than for the tow.
I have a pilots cert from 1997, leaned on a C172. What airport are you flying out of? I wanna try it in MSFS 2020. Thanks.
Just curious, how old is Sienna? Is she high school or college age or slightly older?
Hey Chris, what do you charge for a Discovery flight?
Is there a max. age requirement to fly
One hand on the throttle miss
this is how you get them addicted ;-)
👍🇬🇧
I don't know what you do different from every other youtuber when you're holding your camera, but your audio ALWAYS sounds like you're in a studio. It always puzzles me how you get it to sound that good
Whos here after she got her ppl
I did a discovery flight when I lived in Alaska. Most epic place to fly. Now I fly in the most uninteresting airspace there is...Florida.
South east Florida is interesting and busy
True, but I'm in Tally so not mush to look at.
I did most of my flight training in Florida . It’s absolutely beautiful next to the ocean !! Now I fly in Charlotte NC…talk about BORING.
