Fil , I came across a list of albums turning 50 this year but looked further and found even more. You were the first person I thought of with your seemingly endless knowledge of music you already know about them but Holy Cow I was brought back to 1970 and the quality and quantity is astounding. I would list them but I have 52 on my list and I haven't started the Country genre yet. Do you have any thoughts about that years prolific output, the quality, the diversity ?

"Only in Canada could somebody with a voice like mine win 'Vocalist of the Year'.
    "
    - "First words of his speech accepting the Juno Award for Best Male Vocalist in Canada (1992)" He humbly admitted that he was not a singer. However, he was an amazing songwriter, poet and kind / wise / thoughtful person.

I was so amazingly fortunate around 2008 to have sat and have a coffee with Mr. Cohen. We were in Vancouver BC and were meeting for an interview. My producer knew him very well and so he was easy with his time and very happy to relax and chat before we did the interview. He had been a hero of mine since the mid 60s. I was practically speechless. To this day, one of the highlights of my career. Thanks again 🤘

Leonard's farewell note to his former lover, Marianne Ihlen: "Well Marianne, it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine. And you know that I’ve always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t have to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road."

Please look into more of his music. I find his voice so beautiful, sometimes relaxing. It's interesting to hear his voice change from early in his career to later when it's low and raspier. The words are poetry. I was lucky enough to see him in concert twice.

I was fortunate to see Cohen live several times over the years. One of the most 'emotional' performers of all time. It was like he was laying and exposing everything out and singing his life for everyone to see. A timeless songwriter. Long, long ago I got one of his albums and thought, this guy can't sing at all! Each listen later I realized this guy was really a great vocalist and poet. Early on he had several songs 'stolen' by his manager, namely Suzanne and others. Such a shame it all happened again later on.

Fil, I saw Leonard on his final tour across Canada in 2008 at The Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. He had his full band. Yes, he did Hallelujah, but also, he belted out Closing Time.
His live version of Closing Time was raunchy and almost evil. Of course, balanced by Hallelujah.
He knew the game was over soon. He gave whatever he had left. Leonard was booked for 2 nights. He did 5!

As a Canadian, I very much like some of Leonard Cohen's songs, for sure. This song for sure, but like Glenn Gould, great Canadian classical pianist, he is an acquired taste. Both him and Gould were mystery and mastery at same time. They went by there own rules for sure.

This era of Cohen's band really was superb.
Veterans of the industry, no one trying to make a name for themselves, everyone just in it for the cause of the performance.
Great to hear a version with all the verses, rather than some of the covers which like to drop some of the 'questionable' lines. Hallelujah!

Leonard Cohen had put a moratorium on playing the song in his home. The song became ubiquitous. When I heard Susan Boyle sing it, I decided I couldn't stand to hear any more versions. kd lange, Jeff Buckley, John Cage, Rufus Wainwright and, of course, Leonard. I need no further versions. Don't really want to hear expressionless hackneyed versions from anyone else.
    He's my guy.
I was lucky enough to have seen him perform a couple times and followed his career for nearly 50 years. Even his missteps are wonderfully interesting.
"I was born like this. I had no choice. I was born with the gift of a golden voice." L. Cohen.
This man, this poet, this musician, this seeker and teacher was also a lusty lover of beautiful women, a seeker who went down several dead-end paths, including drugs, and a funny, self-deprecating guy.

If anyone has a problem with lc's singing ability, he clarifies it in "tower of song" - I was born like this, I had no choice, I was born with the gift of a golden voice. He had such a wry sense of humor.
Regardless of who you prefer to cover hallelujah, it goes back to the brilliant song writing. The sound his band brought to the performances was beautiful especially javier mas.

Thanks, Fil! What a great wgirlwind tour of his recording history. I'm so glad I purchased "Live on London" CD and DVD, as I foolishly never saw him live in concert. He was 1/2 away in Wallingford, CT at the Oakdale Theatre. I was an early fan in the First two album',s time. I really loved his gravity. Not until my 60s did I also lighten up and see his gracious humor. As a Catholic college girl of 19, he was quite the dangerous mystery man to me then. Since I've caught up, I love the effects religion had on him young different from mine, later very relatable to myself. Jeff Healy's cover used in "HomicIde: Life on the Streets" brought me back. Jeff's voice sweet, but it lead me back to Leonard. "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" from the beginning jumps out as the real consistent Leonard Cohen in grace. Thanks for pointing out his band and the mesmerizing shows they plaayed.

Leonard Cohen is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Of course, the version you analyze is later in his years. It was written and performed way before then and with a younger Cohen voice. He is the ultimate poet singing his songs. And yes, there are more melodic versions of the song but I'd still hark back to the original sung by Leonard for the emotion. I am often amazed to hear people refer to the song as religious -- I think they totally miss the point of the song because it is anything but.
I'd love to hear an analysis of his song Joan of Arc, another favorite of mine -- honestly, there are many, but I'd settle for your analysis of that song done in his younger years. Thank you for your honest analyses. I am glad to have found your channel. I lose hours here.

What an amazing emotional performance! Thanks Fil for featuring Leonard. I have been a fan for over 40 years. You didn’t mention that he wrote two novels, ‘Beautiful Losers’ and ‘The Favourite Game’. I read them both way back in the early 1970s before I was aware of his songs. Then I met a girlfriend, I was telling her about this writer and low and behold she took out his record and played it. I was mesmerised by the poetry and the wonderful harmonies in Suzanne and Goodbye Marianne. I saw him perform in Sydney in about 1976 and met him backstage after the show. When We shook hands he looked deep into my eyes and I have been hypnotised to his poetry and music ever since.

Aces Fil- love the Batman shirt.
I live in Sonoma Valley. Leonard lived at Zen Center on Sonoma Mountain.
Every now and then you might see him downtown, rarely. He would acknowledge you with an upward motion of his head. I would have really enjoyed meeting him. The emotions in Leonard's vocal are the sum of his life's experience. Lyrics come from life, the emotion comes from the experience of having lived it. The man is sharing his heart. This is a spiritual. Maybe you have to hang out with monks for five years to get there. Maybe it was easier to earn it a second time then it was to collect it. Leonard recognized his power and he shared it with us. People will steal your art and they will take it home and put their name on it. The most they will ever be is custodians. You may own a Picasso but it will always be Picasso's art.
This is not an act,, this is who he is.
    Thank you Leonard.

A very good analysis and a fine shot at condensing Leonard’s career. I don’t have any good reason to talk about the song itself, its content being so intrinsically personal that (to put it somewhat metaphorically) there are as many “Hallelujah’s” as there are people to hear it. For people who are interested in the details of the song, and in Leonard’s method of writing, look here:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallelujah_(Leonard_Cohen_song)?wprov=sfti1
In your presentation one detail got lost, and here I am referring to the fact that, in addition to being first a poet, he was also a novelist before the music became serious. His first novel was “The Favourite Game,” a semi-autobiographical work. His second and last novel was the highly controversial “Beautiful Losers,” a book that I highly recommend. It’s a powerful, intimate and quite unusual read, one that was at its initial publication the object of a “ban the book” campaign by some who considered the book to be obscene.
Thank you again for presenting a performance of an exquisite song by the all-round artist who wrote it, even though you could have chosen one of over 300 versions that currently exist, some of them Leonard’s own. Pax vobiscum. 😎🎶🎶

I have long loved the music of Leonard Cohen - even his early work were his voice was, shall we say, rather rough. He always had an amazing ability with lyrics and his voice always matched the words.

Prefer the recorded version over this live one, but it's high up on the list of all time greats either way. Good call, Fil. Then again, good calls seem to be status quo on this channel...hats off.

He and Judy Collins sang together sometimes. She sang his “Suzanne” and made it a hit, and may have sung other songs he wrote.

Hi Fil I've gone quite a long way through the comments section here - sorry if someone has already mentioned this but Leonard co-wrote Ten New Songs with Sharon Robinson. It's a wonderful album and she does deserve the co writing credit. I'm a huge Leonard fan, have been since around 1969 (yes I'm that old) and am privileged to have seen him in concert 4 times, the first time in the early 1980s. Maybe one day you might cover her gorgeous version of Alexandra Leaving pretty please

WOW. I was looking up his album last night to learn this song from him...the one who wrote it. BTW it's not a religious song any more than my ex wife screaming "Oh God, oh God..." at special times in our lives together.

Some of the motivation for doing this late in his career was Leonard was broke. Whatever the motivation it is brilliant.

Fun fact, Leonard actually never spoke poorly really of the woman who stole all that money and always cared for her and kept contact with her. He figured he had done enough shitty things to people in his life that he wasn’t one to judge.

I heard there is a freaky song
    Impossible to sing along
And you don't really like the lyrics, do ya?
It goes like this, it starts out high
You raise your voice and hope it will fly
Because you like to sing the hallelujah
The chorus is sweet but the rhythm is stinky
The premise is vague and the words are kinky
But everyone likes to sing the hallelujah

This is still the best live version I've seen. Of all the covers I've heard and seen, the original by John Cale remains the best, in my opinion.

There's one other thing I'd like to point out. When you listen to Leonard Cohen you're listening to the man's life's work. The same can be said when you're listening to Jimmy Page. Stairway to Heaven is Mr. Page's life's work. When you do somebody else's song and they're still alive its an impersonation. If you do an artist's work who is deceased it's a tribute. If you do a song that has become a standard or a cover on your album in a way that's filler.
I think it's very important to write and perform your own material. I'm not putting anybody down who does a quality cover of somebody else's tune- you still have to have the skill set and the talent. I think one of the things that makes great artists great is that they chose their own mountain and they chose their own path. Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, two guys who are very much individuals and trendsetters. When you listen to them you're listening to their life's work. They just didn't hear it and decided to do it. This is the love of creativity that I find astonishing and I admire. They thought about it and worked on it, long and hard, and they shared it. Everyday I walk by a piece of art and it does something for me. It does it for free. Never needs batteries. There is so.much perpetual motion and kinetic energy in the piece that it evokes an emotional response in others.
Deeply moving to the extent that other artists, imitate it, emulate it, and offer their interpretation of it. Impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery.
    But you know what?
    You're looking at someone's life's work..

The reason this song ended up being covered a million times by everyone and their mother is really due to Jeff Buckley. He transformed this brilliantly written song into something on another level.

Makes me sad to watch this, because I miss Leonard so much. Having been a fan all my life, I bought Various Positions in '85 when it came out, at about the lowest point of his career. I thought Hallelujah was about the 4th best song on the album!
How about analysing something from earlier on, Fil? Maybe this?
