    Thank God you exist I can’t tell you what it meant to me to come across your films or whatever they call it, coming to you from a tiny little house and studio in the woods of the northeast kingdom of Vermont. Keep these coming because I would go out of my mind if I didn’t know there was another kindred spirit out there. I have a guest house named the Dylan Thomas Guesthouse but I also have a Solarium and soon building a chapel of sorts which I may name after you’re wonderful idea of the temple of peace

    I like this temple of peas. Nice. Will pod casts be done there? .... Merlin knelt in rapture by Dozmary pool on bodmin Moor, a huge green dragonfly hovered nearby on the lake, Morgan le fay hid by a nearby oak, the sultry afternoon wore on, the dragonfly convulsed, and turned into a shimmering sword, merlin cast his eyes to heaven in gratitude and rapture, against such a miracle Morgan le fay's powers were rendered redundant.....

    I’m wondering Malcom: should we write to address contemporary issues or should we write to point beyond contemporary troubles?
    This is at least a 3 pipe problem for me...

    • @JohnRutherford205
      @JohnRutherford205 3 роки тому +2

      That depends a lot on personal philosophy. I know that Tolkien in "On Fairy Stories" wrote about escapism, particularly where fairy stories were concerned. Arthuriana is, at least partially, a fairy story. So, on the one hand, writing to a point beyond contemporary problems is a worthy pursuit. That said, there is a larger question on the poet's purpose in contemporary society. Often sidelined with the rest of the humanities as "useless subjects" not worthy of study and respect, but increasingly relied upon to seek sense and meaning in the horror and suffering of our age. Are poets society's conscience? Yes and no. If we follow Malcolm's example, he has done both.
      I started following his channel back at the beginning of his pandemic. His spells in the library brought me great comfort through lockdowns, loss, and indeed having COVID myself. His book, Quarantine Quatrains, was one I ordered as soon as it became available and indeed bought two copies. In it he delves into the struggles many experienced during quarantine, the loss and pain suffered by both COVID-patients/victims and their carers. I sincerely hope there is another edition of this work. It's become a point of pride in my own library.
      He is also writing escapism in his retelling of the Quest. The production of this work proves that one need not write either or, but can do both(with plenty of tobacco, study, patience, and revision). His writing provides both a much needed and necessary escape from suffering(both personal and generally), but also fearlessly confronts the world's issues. So do both. It's what I'm trying to do, anyway.

      a funny and true story for you---
      i had the blessing of baptising two little boys, brothers, on my birthday some few years back. now, my birthday is 24 April and so falls between St George and St Mark.
      the boys' legal names are River and Tristan, so River became Mark and Tristan was christened George.
      and i alone inly laughed at the thought of the cruel or ignorant priest who would have reversed my better choice.

    I confess to not having yet got this far into Malory, but I prefer your version to the French Queste del Sant Graal, which I recently reread in the Penguin translation of Pauline Matarasso (because of your Arthurian poems, in fact!). Making the Knight who wounds Sir Melias fey instead of somehow angelic keeps the mystery and the same moral lesson but without the lack of grace in the French version. I feel that often they learn moral lessons in that book but not always grace! (Sometimes, though, the apparent lack of grace is in fact the manifestation of grace to raise someone to something higher, as with Lancelot) Anyway, I love these and will buy the book when you publish it!
