Fun Fact: the James Bond movie "For Your Eyes Only" was shot there and they had to get a special permit for the movie shoot. They also wanted to shoot scenes for GoT,more specific the scenes that take place at The Vale (the domain of House Arryn), but there were some logistical and buraeucratic issues. In the end the producers send a team to film some footage at Meteora and enchanced it with CGI for the show. The mountains of the Vale in the show are actually the Meteora mountains, with some CGI sprinkled over. Also, the album "Meteora" by Linkin Park was named after this, after Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington read about it in a travel magazine and became fascinated.
Same goes for the battle with the Mountain where the other protagonist dies, don't remember his name. They wanted to "rent" a place in one island of ours but the local government rejected the request simply because the area was open for the public/tourists and they didn't want to close it down just for the movie. They could make a quick buck easily, but the authorities acted pretty solidly.
Awesome video! Those hermit caves are insane, I wouldn't even make it halfway up. It's incredible how they built the monasteries on the stone pillars. Such a fascinating place!
Totally captivating to think how they survived, built all this magnificent place with ropes and bare hands and whatever tools they used plus plus their love for God. How small we are. Loved this video thanks for sharing
It was the determination of the Greeks trying to avoid the Turks, literally. Monasteries on the top of the Rocks, all over the Greek area. For 400 years Turks kept us into obscurantism, darkness but we survived almost "unscathed". However, we lost 400 years of progress. When our City fell in 1453, Constantinople, it was the richest in the world with Rome being second. For the next 400 years we were simply trying to avoid them and that's why we remained Christians and Greeks, while other nearby Ethnicities, simply converted to Islam and even joined the Turks, altogether trying to eradicate us. Our short story after Classical Greece which for 400 years includes nothing important, unfortunately. One of our last inventions, the "Greek Fire" was a powerful weapon sadly, in the tries to repel the Turks. We kept the secret so well hidden, guarded, we even ourselves lost the recipe.🙂
Meteora is high on our list of places to visit when we travel to Greece! Impressive churches and monasteries! It also reminds me a bit of the Cappadocia as well, with churches and living quarters dug into the rocks.
Thank you for producing such an informative and educational video! We love to see and *especially* learn about places around the world. Meteora is on our bucket list for sure. What a beautiful place!
Love videos like this because they give me a great list to start at if I want to visit a place. The sites were beautiful. We are happy subscribers! Keep the good stuff coming
Great job! We had heard of Meteora, but now that we have seen it through your lens ... WOW!!! Added it to our "must visit" list. And a hike is definitely the thing for us. Thank you.
Keep in mind all these rocks can be climbed. Greek climbers have created many routes and the ascent is pretty magical. While you agonize to climb, on the next Rock at the top of a Monastery, people staring at you and smile... Surreal situation. Of course, hikers can be served as well. 🙂
She says "The church is over 25 century's old" But the actual Christianity itself is just over 20 centuries old, (I'm wondering what sort of church is that)? However the place and the building it's great achievement, considering the time it was built
I'll tell you how. :) The church was originally a temple dedicated to the God Apollo. The church site and what it was made of is 25 centuries old but Christianity is obviously not.
2500 years ago it was then a pagan temple and not a church. The monks also went to live in those hills to hide from the persecutions of the Turks. This church was bombed by the Germans. Nazi party members did not have an airforce. Germany had. Political correctness is unbareble. A part from that your video is nice thanks.
You callin' me a liar? You'd also be calling the tour guides liars too then :P The church was made using the stones from an apollo temple - that's what makes it 2K years old...
@@CastawaywithCrystal 2000 years ago there was hardly any Christianity. Pagan temples were not churches. They were temples. Their ruins were used in later centuries to build churches. But not 2000 ago.
@@CastawaywithCrystal I wish I had more than a day there :( rock climbing sounds fun. What would you say would be proper attire for man? not trying to disrespect anything or one while I'm there
Meteora inhibited by people at lest 130.000 years ago. Also there is a wall constructed by inhabitants 23.000 years ago and considered one of the oldest human constructions.

So much great trivia in here! I knew about the Bond movie but didn't know the others! Wow!

I read that the steps and rope ladders are built by hand. Bare hands of the resident monks

Because Cappadocia was for 3000 years Greek 🤩
my grandpa was born and brought up here 🥺 i wish to visit this place someday when i am an adult

wow those caves are so cool. thanks for the video so informative. this is a greek island we must visit next time we are in the area.
Jesus Christ, not everything in Greece is an island... Check the beginning of the video again...
This one is on the mainland! So super easy to hire a car and drive to from Athens. We highly recommend doing it that way :) :)

Can you say meta? Ok. Now mete with the last e like pronouncing egg.
Good. Now ora.
Nice.

james bond filmed there long time ago :)
also they used the landscapes for a scene at game of thrones

There is no 2000 year old church.

lol
If you use materials from a 2000 old archaeological site to build your house, that doesn't make your house 2000 old 😂😂

Hey... I didn't lie did I? LOL. The first one is the Hermit Caves, and there's also hiking and rock climbing. But thanks for the engagement ;)

Giagantic fossilized silica trees from the past. It is evident the Tartarian architecture style, nothing to do with monks,,,it was already built.
I'm not sure what you are talking about here... Could you clarify? TYVM
Learn how to pronounce it correctly, Jeeze making us Greeks cringe 🥴
