@@TheAmericanAmerican Same. I don't blame some leftists for not being able to think past life basics, because when you don't have it it's all you can think about. But we don't have to sell ourselves short. And we won't get the support we need because a lot of people, even globally, live in the now and want technology that makes our lives easier (and sometimes more fun). The desire is there even if the means are not.

The right's talking points are everywhere in mainstream society. It's lefty stuff that is basically like "see that? That's bad"
An example would be the patriarchy. It doesn't take any effort to adapt to a patriarchal society but it does take some to recognise problematic behaviour and it takes even MORE effort to recognise why they're problematic properly.
The left has issues because it's that second step that people don't take, and because of that they just misunderstand what they're fighting for or against.

When the conversation swivelled to money and economic understanding and the left, a commenter in chat said "Michael Brooks and David Graeber's deaths really hurt the Left"
Mannnn, those deaths really did hurt the Left. 2020 was a year full of tragedies, but when those two died it felt like a tragedy of lost promise, of missed opportunities. Those were the two leftist voices who impressed me the most. The voices that best combined leftism, humour, wit, intelligence, learning and compassion. Since those two died I haven't been able to find a voice like that on the left - someone who has a believable vision of the future and a strong understanding of the past and present, someone who's able to communicate those two things in a way that's just fucking electric. I'd love to find voices like that again.

If you in any way have a method to control for people like this, I would love to see more, so much more from people like this guy. It was just a simple, straightforward, informed, and sincere conversation. I probably got more enjoyment out of this than I have from most political stuff for a while now. I think that the Trump years have really burned me out on the hyper-partisan, arguing over basic facts. I think that I am pretty done on that for now. I love talking to people that I disagree with, but people where we acknowledge and work off of the same facts but simply come from different perspectives. So much of the space out there now has been infected with a general disregard for facts, and an actual desire to produce something through the conversation rather than just driving home talking points. I understand that when you go into certain platforms, your hands are tied and you gotta play the game as it exists, not as you want it to, but for here on your platform, it definitely would be more productive and at least personally more interesting, but I am willing to bet more people are down for chill politics these days than we realize.

@@CandyOMBodydouble To be fair, I don't think modern communism is the same as eastern bloc austerity. But a lot of people in online leftist communities are very young and/or been screwed over economically by our current system. People who aren't getting their basic life needs met no matter how much they work don't really want care to talk about luxury goods. But I know most of the broader world will _not_ be on board with de-commodifying life essentials if it means they cannot have a desirable quality of life with some nice things. Plus, things that were considered luxuries have room to become commonplace, like washing machines and toasters.
Even though I'm gainfully employed and well-housed now, I remember what it was like when I wasn't and can appreciate how easily I can get back there with the onset of one debilitating health emergency. Give the people who do the unpopular jobs lots of cash, have them get the most luxury out of life because they suffer the most from society.

Even though it is well understood that when you have too many dollars chasing too few goods you have inflation however for some odd reason people will mistakenly think that just printing dollars will cause inflation even though after the 2007 crash trillions of dollars were printed and we had deflation. This is because that money went to banks and people who lost their jobs stopped buying so much that you had too much goods and too little demand which resulted in further layoffs to deal with over capacity. Currently because of the supply shock we have too few goods in the market right now which is resulting in inflation combined with a labor shortage which is driving wage inflation.
